Superb!.......2007-03-09

Stinespring does an excellent job of communicating typical microeconomic analysis techniques using Mathematica. He also provides a good reminder of the reasoning behind performing such calculations. A concern I had was that I had purchased Mathematica 5.2, and the book was written for version 4. So far however, I have had no problems applying the syntax straight from the book and adjusting it for my particular situation. Economics is heavily math-based, and Mathematica makes the computations much simpler. The challenge I had was to getting up to speed quickly in Mathematica in order to perform economic analysis. Stinespring's book lowers the Mathematica learning curve a great deal allowing you to get on with performing analysis without having to go through the nearly 1,500 page Mathematica user guide.

The first chapter provides a good overview of Mathematica. If you are already familiar with Mathematica, you could skip this chapter. Stinespring then gets on with the economics, sufficiently covering consumer theory, producer theory and economic dynamics. The book is layed out in such a way that you could read it straight through or use it as a reference.

I doubt this book will gather any dust on my bookshelf, but will instead look duly worn in a short period.

Alan Auerbach and James Poterba examine the striking decline in corporate tax revenues as a share of GNP John Shoven describes new developments in corporate finance and tax avoidance, concluding that these devices have helped and will continue to help corporate shareholders escape the double taxation of dividends.

Herman Leonard and Richard Zeckhauser review the experience of several states with tax amnesty programs and consider the likely effects of a Federal tax amnesty program. Jeffrey Harris explores the economic effects of tobacco taxation, particularly the effect the recent hike in the Federal excise tax on cigarettes had on prices and on the number of smokers. Douglas Bernheim suggests that the Federal estate tax could conceivably reduce Federal tax revenues. And in a concluding chapter, Michael Boskin and Douglas Puffert show that the redistributions between married workers and single workers in the Social Security system far outweigh the much discussed "marriage tax" effects of the individual income tax.

I enjoy historical fiction and found this novella set hard to put down. Both were very romantic stories, and I thoroughly enjoyed them. I have to say this is one of my favorite novellas because of the strong romance element. The reader can't help but want the couples to get together. Great tension and evidence of attraction without going overboard. Heartwarming themes. Both had likeable couples. Very well done.

Although written by different authors, the second story is a follow-up to the first one. Set in post-Civil War times, these heartwarming tales of wounded souls and frozen hearts that find healing and thawing through love and friendship have a Little House on the Prairie or Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman feel to them. It's refreshing to read romances involving mature, older characters. This book is Christian fiction, which isn't noted on the cover or in the product description. At times, the stories become quite preachy, but for the most part, they are simply about faithful people on a spiritual journey, without being too intrusive or overwhelmingly religious.

Tracey Takes On, adapted from her HBO series of the same name, showcases the protean and prolific actress and comic chameleon. Surely 20 characters and alter egos is some kind of a record. There's Trevor Aylii, gay airline steward; Hope Finch, 19-year-old student at Sweetbriar College ("She is not currently a lesbian, but she's young and impressionable."); Fern Rosenthal, a Long Island homemaker and a member of the Royal Family known only as H.R.H. (Her Royal Highness). Sparing neither Great Britain nor its former colony, Ullman lampoons or impersonates types with aninimitable style that sometimes seems too tackily real to produce an innocent giggle--more like an "Oh, no" groan.

First come the character's biographies, followed by commentaries; each character opines on such pressing subjects as royalty, mothers, crime, family, sex, fame, movies, and politics. There's some new material, but most of the book consists of schtick from the first two seasons of the TV series; new is a patently absurd screenplay by Hope Finch and an encounter between H.R.H. and President Clinton. For those who insist on living dangerously, paper dolls of each persona may be cut out and let loose in one's home. What will Tracey Ullman take on next?

Tracey Ullman can't be pigeon-holed. Call her a comedienne whose Fox television show launched "The Simpsons," and you short-change her work as a pop singer, able to attract Paul McCartney to appear in her first music video, and as an actress who has appeared in movies directed by Lawrence Kasden, Robert Altman and Woody Allen. She's a comic chameleon in more ways than one, successfully working in any area she takes a mind to.

Her biggest strength is her ability to slip into a variety of characters, and in her HBO series "Tracey Takes On," from which this book is based, Ullman has created 15 women and men, each immediately recognizable and all daffy in their own way.

There's Linda Granger, the sexpot star of the 70s TV series "VIP Lounge," making a living from her residues, her autobiography ("I'm Still Here") and her line of Recovery dolls ("each one of them marks a milestone of survival in my life"); Sydney Kross, demon lawyer (motto: "You name it, we'll sue it"); Rayleen Gibson, "stuntwoman to the stars," who was raised by dingos in the Australian outback and is married to a dwarf; and gay airline steward Trevor Ayliss ("his favorite destinations remain Amsterdam, San Francisco and the Greek island of Mykonos").

With them, Ullman creates stories and incidents whose humor are rooted in character. But she doesn't stop there. "Tracey Takes On" combines series footage, scripts, essays and material created especially for the book to give the characters as much realism as they appear on the show. A lot of effort went into this book, and the result is a lovely comic gem of a book.

A quantum leap beyond Dean's earlier book.......2004-01-31

If you're familiar with the first incarnation of a book called *Jambands* by Dean Budnick, this is the very same guy but a completely different book. I was troubled by the first version's compilation of press photos with prose that read like official bios, with few details about actual album releases, and with an unswerving politeness throughout about all of the acts included.

Here, instead, are a nice seletion of live photos, with studied attention to select releases, and even a ratings system which comparatively evaluates those releases, combined with fair and balanced reflections in Dean's inimitable writing style.

You still won't find the level of forthrightness you might want from a music critic. (No one included "sucks" if you accept Dean's spin. Perhaps this is because he's weeded out the carp, but even many of those included wallow in mediocrity.) But the break from a glossy fluff package towards an in-depth and reflective study is a quantum leap above and beyond the earlier book. And the presentation, layout, and overall delivery is a far more engaging and enticing package.

Besides, Dean's not a music critic. He's an historian and a scholar of American culture, and that's what you'll get here: a thorough slice of jambands currency, an historic epoch in American culture.

Where it once seemed that the ideal of American citizenship was found in the promise of integration and in the hope that none of us would be singled out for, let alone judged by, our race or ethnicity, today integration, often taken to mean a denial of identity and history for subordinated racial, gender, sexual or ethnic groups, is often rejected, and new terms of inclusion are sought. The essays in Cultural Pluralism, Identity Politics, and the Law ask us to examine carefully the relation of cultural struggle and material transformation and law's role in both. An excellent biography of Lucy, the author put much time, effort, and research into it including conducting interviews with people who knew and had contact with Lucy. It is particularly excellent in covering Lucy's early years, Her trip to Europe and Australia and experiences there, and Her early acting career days to the early days of Xena. There is ample information not found elsewhere easily about Lucy from Her high school years to the time She began the Xena series. Marc stresses how everybody knew Lucy was so incredibly beautiful and gorgeous, that She was very determined, capable, and courageous, and that She and Garth were tempting the fates by having incredible Hot Sexxx in Australia (if not earlier). Great descriptions of Lucy especially Her younger years before Xena. Most of the pictures in the book werent colored and the colored one were the worst pics of Lucy Lawless I've ever seen. The picture on the cover isn't clear and isn't a picture worth putting on the cover. He should use better pictures. The writing style was a little boring, but it contained good info, except it doesnt explore the friendship between Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor even though in the back it said it does.

This book showed me the real person behind, Xena, the warrior princess. I love the way, it started telling about her from the begining of her life to the present, and the way it capture, the experiences and advantures of her life. I especially love the way she,never gave up on her dreams to become a actress. Also the way she never let the new found fame go over her head. I admire that, she stays down to earth. This is a book well worth reading.

If you are like me (always wanting to know not just the DO but the HOW of classes in MFC) this book is a must, and even used it was in great shape. It fits perfectly with my library of programmer's references.

Bring your MFC mastery to a new level!.......2006-11-03

The difference between this book and Programming Windows with MFC is that while the latter provides a complete reference on how to use MFC, it does not cover much what is going inside MFC. You might ask why should care about how MFC works? If you remember the first time you used MFC, you might remember your astonishment about how quick you could have a working decent application in five minutes just by using the MFC wizard but after that joyful moment, you spent frustrating weeks to figure out how to do add this special feature to your program. Lets face it, the documentation coming with MFC does not tell everything you have to know to fully unleash the power of MFC. The only way to truly understand MFC is to dig in the code (For Star Wars fans, Obi-Wan would say "Use the source, Luke") and this is precisely why Microsoft is providing the MFC source code. MFC source code is huge and might be intimidating at first. This is why having a book to help you in the first steps of your exploration is an excellent idea. Consider having this book as a companion for Programming Windows for MFC. However, this book is not for novices. Only buy it, if you consider yourself good with programming MFC.

Not suitable for MFC begginers, but very good and informative book for professionals. It is writen in very good manner - it is easy to read and understand even complex topics
MFC Internals are described in attractive way, so is not boring to read a book.

This book is the best book for MFC and what it does inside. This is not an introductory book and if you are new to MFC you'd be better served by reading Kruglinki's Programming Visual C++.

Are you still amazed what's going on behind the scenes? If yes, buy this! It's a great book to enjoy exploration of MFC. Navigate with it and then try yourself. You'll probably find America... I would say, authors have taken a great pain to construct such a good material.
