2 out of 5 stars basic info... so much of it the baby goes out with bathwater.......2007-07-26

i agree entirely with the previous reviewer, in that book tries casts a scope so wide that it becomes nearly useless as a resorce for a beginning teacher. this book would be excellent for a person who has not taken a teachers training course (B. Ed., or teachers college), but for those who have, the info is so basic as to become useless. there is simply so much info here that is redundant to any decent training you might have already had, and any gems that may be buried within are lost amongst the mass.

i give this book two stars, because for a person who has not been trained to teach this book really does cover *all* of the basics (mostly theory that guides your practice). however, going into this book i know what i needed, which is: 1) straightforward, practical pointers on what i need to do to prepare, 2) suggestions for activites to use in the first week.

going in to a teaching career, you will hopefully have so much support from fellow teachers that you will be getting first hand info and guidance (probably even lesson plans) that you will not need to worry, but that first week is what things will hinge on, and it is probably the week that you are most on your own. this book should be 1/3 the size, include sample rubrics and other tools, and condensed all of it's info.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2007-03-09

For the first year or beginning teacher, this book is "a must have".
It provides concrete advice about what a beginning teacher should and
should not do. It is extremely "readable", with no fancy jargon, and a real
resource to help a new teacher get started. On top of that it is actually
entertaining to read, not boring. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Review of College Preparation.......2006-07-31

I have been searching for teaching job for 4 years now and have finally been offered one. After being out of college for that long period, I was worried about my classroom managment practices. This book was a great review of everything learned in college plus some! I also have Wong's First Days of School. I think that this text far surpasses Wong's.

5 out of 5 stars Your First Year As a High School Teacher : Making the Transition from Total Novice to Successful Professional.......2006-07-17

This book should be required reading for every new high school teacher! I am giving a copy to my student teacher, and to my daughter, a future teacher. It is well-written, and brings up topics that a new teacher might not have thought about. Well-reasoned answers to questions are provided. As a veteran teacher, I found myself marking pages as I read through it.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-10-15

This book seemed like a lot of common sense to someone who already knows even a little bit about what it's like to be a teacher. Book might be helpful to a student who isn't quite sure yet.

      Book Description

This book consists of three long papers, accompanied by a series of short comments (by Klaus Nesser, Erling Steigum, Danny Quah, Michael Bergman, and Seppo Honkapohja) and an introduction by the editors covering the main themes of the book. It combines a systematic empirical investigation into the characteristics of business cycles with a review of general theories of the patterns and dynamics of cycles. The first paper, by John Hassler, Torsten Persson, and Paul Soderlind, investigates the patterns over time of business cycles, using data from the remarkable Swedish series dating from 1860 to the present day, and will become a standard reference in the literature on empirical investigations of business cycles. The authors find that there are strong similarities between the patterns of the business cycles of many countries. The second paper, by Peter Englund, Anders Vredin, and Anders Warne, analyses the dynamics of business cycles, and uses applied econometric analysis to identify different types of exogenous macroeconomic shocks, again using the Swedish data. The authors conclude that both permanent and transitory real shocks have lasting effects on patterns of economic growth. The third paper, by Jean-Michel Grandmont, has a different emphasis and reviews the theory of endogenous shocks. In this complex and distinguished paper he argues that agents may have self-fulfilling expectations of fluctuations in business activity.

      Book Description

In 1980, Max Vidrine, a college freshman living on the LSU campus, becomes overwhelmed with the adversity that seems to jump in his path. Sleepless nights and improbable events make each episode an anecdote all its own. These events, that seemingly knock Max off the road to success, are mostly frustrating. Yet, Max and his roommate are able to find humor in nearly all that happens. The lessons learned are subtle, yet entirely necessary for Max to become a well-rounded adult. These lessons are not taught by the professors in the hallowed halls, but by the experiences of feeling alone, living without means, and struggling to find a purpose to the chaos that sometimes engulfs a college student.

"The tone of this novella is sincere, the pace quick, but this story should be digested in small amounts as opposed to completing it in one afternoon. The syntax is straightforward, and a quick read might rob the audience of the gems Matthew Fontenot has to offer."

      4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-05-20

Like every other thing that's around us the music industry has a history, and the music industry has a dark and hidden history filled with events that are better left unsaid. Not in this book, it presents the history of music from the first recorded piece up to the MP3 digital era of this century. Good structure and revealing information will not let you drop this book out of your hands, it's captivating content and insightful advice about the industry are things that you just cannot miss when searching for information about this area

4 out of 5 stars great retrospective look........2006-05-16

If you're interested in the past of the largest entertainment industry, this is the book for you. I think that by reading this and learning from the past, I am more prepared to become a successful leader in the music industry of the future. I recommend "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen in addition to this book. It's like they were meant for each other.

5 out of 5 stars An Awesome Work of Scholarship.......2001-02-25

Okay, by no stretch of the imagination is this light reading. But there is nothing else like this book out there; nothing else gives you such a thorough picture of how the business of music in the 20th century has affected what we hear and buy and listen to.

The whole century is here: how the ASCAP/BMI battle raged for years and influenced everything from swing recordings to attitudes about rock and roll; how records and juke boxes and radio and movies changed the way writers made money; how recording artists "became" composers. And yes, here's one more way in which the Beatles changed the face of popular music.

In some ways the book can be disheartening for those who always figured that the world of popular music was a true capitalist meritocracy. But as the battle over napster and the net rages, it's interesting to see how the gulf between writers, performers, and the public has ALWAYS been a horrible morass of money, power, laws, unwritten rules, and manipulation.

This is a work of thorough and inpeccable scholarship. It's as if he knew that no one else was going to try to tell this story, so he'd better include every last tidbit. Fascinating in its detail, amazing in its scope, this is a must-read work for any student of American popular music.

        Book Description

Technology has always been inseparable from the development of music. But in the twentieth century a rapid acceleration took place: a new "machine music" came into existence, electronic musical instruments appeared, and composers sometimes seemed more like sound technicians than musicians. In this book Hans-Joachim Braun and his co-authors offer a wide-ranging and fascinating look at the relationship of technology and modern music. Topics range from the role of Yamaha in Japan's musical development to the social construction of the synthesizer; from the player piano as precursor of computer music to the musical role of airplanes and locomotives; from the growth of one independent recording studio (from "Polka to Punk") to the origins of the 45--RPM record. Other chapters consider violin vibrato and the phonograph, Jimi Hendrix, and the aesthetic challenge of soundsampling. The book concludes with a look at the current situation, and perspectives for its future in electronic music.

Kraft, Alexander B. Magoun, Rebecca McSwain, Andre Millard, Helga de la Motte-Haber, Trevor Pinch, Susan Schmidt-Horning, and Frank Trocco.

          Book Description

Ranging from broad inquiries into the roles of economics and sociology in the explanation of technological change to an argument for the possibility of "uninventing" nuclear weapons, this selection of Donald MacKenzie's essays provides a solid introduction to the style and substance of the sociology of technology.

Two conceptual essays are followed by seven empirical essays focusing on the laser gyroscopes that are central to modern aircraft navigation technology, supercomputers (with a particular emphasis on their use in the design of nuclear weapons), the application of mathematical proof in the design of computer systems, computer-related accidental deaths, and the nature of the knowledge that is needed to design a nuclear bomb. Two of the articles won major prizes on their original journal publication. A substantial new introduction outlines the common themes underlying this body of work and places them in the context of recent debates in technology studies.

            Book Description

Written with the cooperation of Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr., who both consented to rare interviews, The Lucy Book is an amazing retrospective of the five-decade television career of America's favorite redhead. Containing hundreds of original interviews with cast members, guest stars, production people, contemporaries, family, and friends, this book will tell you for the first time what it was really like to work with Lucy.

Year by year, episode by episode, television appearance by television appearance, you can follow the meteoric careers of this comedy legend. Her five series--I love Lucy
(1951-57), The Lucille Ball-Dezi Arnaz Show (1957-1960), The Lucy Show (1962-68), Here's Lucy (1968-74), and Life with Lucy (1986)--are thoroughly covered, as are her myriad guest appearances on other situation comedies, dramas, games shows, talks hows, variety shows, commercials, and specials. All told, more than 1,000 television appearances are extensively chronicles in this book. The Lucy Book contains:

--cast and crew information, along with background anecdotes and current interview quotes for each entry.
--particulars about several Lucy TV scripts that were never produced.
--a critical analysis of Lucy's enormous effect on the television industry.

4 out of 5 stars A must for Lucille Ball fans!.......2007-01-10

This is an excellent book for Lucille Ball fans & fans of "I Love Lucy". Excellent information on all her starring roles and appearances on TV.

5 out of 5 stars Treasure trove for the serious Lucy fan.......2006-06-02

This is one of the best books available on the "Lucy" phenomenon. The author exhaustively details her television appearances from the late 1940s until her death in 1989. Many original interviews were conducted with supporting actors, writers, directors, etc.

Not necessarily the *first* book for someone who doesn't know much about Lucy, but a prize for those who enjoy delving into the details.

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustively detailed, opinionated...THE "Lucy" book!.......2005-11-27

Better, perhaps, than any biography ever written about the one and only Lucille Ball, this work details - and I mean DETAILS - every known possible TV moment America spent with the woman called "The First Lady of Comedy". Its author, Geoffery Mark Fidelman, has done a TREMENDOUS service to all of Lucy's fans, capturing every TV appearance in printed remembrance, and the exhaustive research he's done is apparent immediately. At times, it seems downright impossible to believe one man did it all! Unlike OTHER "Lucy" books, however, this is not a 'puff piece'; no no no...Mr Fidelman, and many of those quoted generously throughout the book, freely offer their opinions about Ball, her husbands, co-workers, shows, etc, and while this will no doubt offend those looking for a 'fluffier' or lighter read, it actually makes for a refreshingly well-rounded character profile of its subject and all those who worked with her through the many years. If Fidelman occasionally goes a bit overboard with comments regarding her appearance, let us not forget that Lucille Ball WAS a glamorous, beautiful, and, yes, even sexy and sexual woman, something which apparently bothered another user on this site, which makes this book even MORE essential as a character study: Lucille Ball comes across as a HUMAN BEING, a woman, mother, wife, movie and TV star, head of a company. For that alone, the book can be viewed as essential to Ball fans and fanatics, or those simply interested in classic TV or Hollywood celebrities of yore. Photographs are relatively limited so if you're seeking a more "coffee table" style book, there are certainly others out there, and they're fine enough. But for something that you - and even the casual fan - will actually READ, and come to find INDISPENSIBLE, look no further: you've found THE "Lucy" book!

5 out of 5 stars The Most Complete Book on Lucy's TV Career Ever Written.......2005-10-05

I've enjoyed reading and re-reading Geoffrey's comments on every "I Love Lucy" episode each time I watch one of the reruns. He has certainly written the most complete book on Ms. Ball's TV career. I was fascinated by the remarks made by Lucy's co-stars, both living and deceased. Geoffrey's dedication to providing a wealth of information which is available here for the very first time is phenomenal. This book is a must read for anyone who loves and admires Lucille Ball and her multi-talents. I can't wait to read Geoffrey's next book about the life and career of the fabulous Ethel Merman, which is due out in November 2005.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Lucy TV Handbook.......2005-05-04

This is a great book that is sure to be worn out by the time you're done reading it. It is great for the Lucy fans (like me) who were not alive during Lucille Ball's active TV career and may have not caught every episode of Here's Lucy or the Lucy Show or even Life With Lucy. It sets straight the rumors or stories that have been mis-told throughout the years. With valuable interviews from Desi, Jr., Lucie Arnaz, plus people who have worked with her over the years like Herbert Kennwith, Maury Thompson, Mary Jane (Croft) Lewis, Doris Singleton, Milton Birle, Madelyn Davis, Bob Carroll, Jr....the list goes on and on.
I like the way the author gives a synopsis of each episode or show Ball was in and then gives a commentary about it, whether it was good or bad, or little known facts about the episode itself. After reading plenty of other Lucy books, I still found this one very informative and quite interesting to read. It is laid out by season (years), and the episodes of her regular series are listed in the order they were aired, not the order they were produced. There is even a Lucy Trivia quiz in the end.
For those who have thought they had read every Lucy book they need to, this one is a must-read!

            5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-16

Great book that will give any home recorder a good idea on what microphones they can afford and should get for different types of recording. But don't get ripped off by any seller trying to sell this book for more than $20.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book covers complicated and subjective topic..........2002-01-04

I have been around music as a musician for years and knew a thing or two about the recording process...but, I knew very little about mics, mic placement, etc.

This book really opened up a world for me that I was always fascinated with...how did those guys get such great sound on their album??? The most important thing is the mics and where and how you use them. This book gives you the basics and then some.

With this book I was able to record my first band with near professional studio quality sound...

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in recording or for bands going into the studio to give you input as to what you want...

5 out of 5 stars Solid, easily accessible information.......2001-11-06

A terrific book that we rely on here at Mercy College.

Basically the book is broken up into three sections: In the first, Alldrin talks about microphone operational principles. You'll find lots of useful information about microphone design, how directional mics work, how to understand micropone specifications, an so forth.

In the second section, he covers issues regarding Microphone Apllications, such as placement techniques and stereo miking. There are several short 2-4 page "chapters" that focus on miking particular instruments in various ways. As with all of the sections of the book, these chapters are well-illustrated and easy to follow.

The final section discusses the characteristics of specific common microphones. A "buyer's guide" groups mics into price categories such as Mics under $500, Mics from $500 to $1000, etc.. Each mic is featured with a photo and specifications, making this section a great way for a beginner to become acquainted with what's out there.

My students have responded positively to this book as a text. It's also a good model of HOW a music technology book should be written. If you are interested in learning about microphones, you won't regret picking this book up.

            4 out of 5 stars Understanding sound.......2001-02-13

Everything you need to know about sound is in this book. Understand sound, then you can manipulate it, according to your ear's preference. And it shows you how important it is to develop several styles of recording for different music. The recurring theme is "there's no right way". Instead, every technique is analysed, and explained, in plain enough English (with some SPF's, and dB's which are also explained anyway), and it shows that what determines the mic positioning, is what YOU want from the sound. Vague, I know, but you'll understand once you get this book.

The night before a major recording, this is the book I read through to recap on a few mic positioning techniques for the different instruments. It shows you the kind of techniques from the harmonica and accordion, through to the modern rock drum-kit.

There is also a list of microphones with some of its data, though a small comment on each would be appreciated. Still, it's a good start for the engineer who is starting from scratch.

Nothing has been exaggerated above, it truly is a great book, well worth its price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to microphones.......1999-03-18

Before I read this book, all I knew was which end was the business end of a microphone. The author (thankfully) wrote this book with beginners in mind. It was very well written and it didn't put me to sleep. Considering the subject matter, I consider that quite an accomplishment. He starts with the basic theory of how a microphone works and builds from there. He never left me in the dust with technical jargon. He doesn't preach or insist on his way as THE way to use microphones. Instead, he explains ways to possibly use microphones to achieve the sounds you (the recordist) are trying for. Great beginning book for a curiculum in recording engineering or as a reference when building a home studio. 2 thumbs way, way up!!
