5 out of 5 stars Must have book for Beginning/New Teachers.......2006-07-30

I don't understand why some buyers gave such low reviews for this book. I think the book is FANTASTIC!!! I graduated in 2003 with a Masters In Education but never completed my Student Teaching so I decided not to pursue a career in Teaching. Recently I've decided to rethink my career choices and I'm in the process of obtaining a Provisional License (once I've taught for one academic year, I can apply for a state license. The Provisional License is used in lieu of Student Teaching). This book was a very detailed refresher for me. It explains everything you need to know. The information is so helpful, easy to understand and useful, a definite 'must have' for first year teachers. It is the best Teachers 'handbook' I've read so far. I can't wait to implement the many practical ideas/suggestions outlined in the book. If you are a new teacher, this book is well worth the investment.

5 out of 5 stars very useful!!.......2006-05-17

I have read and re-read this book. It helped me tremendously to go through it before my interview.

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but not great.......2003-04-30

I ordered this along with Harry Wong's First Days of School as something to give my student teacher. I was not impressed with this book. For $7, get Harry Wong's.
This book does contain some useful information, but it's an easy read, with really very little substance. Much of the information is common sense (like what supplies to keep at your desk, or how to make friends with the office staff). In most cases, this information is given out during student-teaching, college courses, or the district induction program. It contains very little in terms of setting expectations, dealing with crises, organization, etc.

If you do choose to get this book, I hope it would be one of many you'd read.

5 out of 5 stars Your First Year As an Elementary School Teacher : Making the.......2001-07-03

This is a fantastic book! I am a business professional looking to switching careers and go into elementary education, and this book was exactly what I needed to give me a heads up on what my first year as an elementary school teacher would be like. It's well-written, easy to read, and contains lots of tid bits of information that I never would have thought of! If you're considering elementary school teaching as a career, you have to read this book! I'm reading it now before I start my teaching licensure classes, and I'll read it again right before I start my first year of teaching. This book helped me to realize that I really do want to become a teacher.

3 out of 5 stars how-to vs. reference book.......2001-06-07

This is very similar to "Your First Year as a High School Teacher." I think that the authors were trying too hard to make this a how-to book, when it should be regarded instead as a reference book.

What I mean is, the book spells out everything a new teacher has to think about, from discipline, to lesson plans, to staff relations, to supplies, etc. etc. etc. I don't think it really succeeds as a how-to book, though. If you want something like that, start with Harry Wong's "First Days of School" instead. This book might be handy next to your dictionary and thesaurus as a reference guide, though.

The numerous sidebars are what set apart this book from some others. "From the desk of..." provides nice anecdotes and stories. Sometimes it's nice to know that other teachers have also laughed and cried their way through their first years. "Making the grade" points to numerous excellent online resources. Let me stress how good their resources are - this is truly where you could the best use from this book. The "Teaching terms" are a bit condescending (What first-year teacher doesn't know what a 'school assembly' or a 'grade book' is? If there are a lot, we are all in big trouble!).

On the whole, I think first-year teachers will be able to use snippets of this book. But unless you are a subsitute looking for a "crash course" approach to the profession, I think you will be a bit disappointed if you read this book cover to cover.

    Book Description

Using theoretical and statistical models, along with several new sets of empirical results, this book examines the impact of legislative television on the political process in the United States. It examines the relationship between political-economic variables and the tendency to adopt/support live television in the U.S. Congress, the impact of television on the length of U.S. House and Senate sessions, the use of parliamentary procedures in the presence (absence) of television cameras, and the role that legislative television has played in improving incumbents' success rates in primary/general federal elections. Where possible, the economic costs to taxpayers of legislators' use of television cameras, in order to enhance their re-election prospects, are also considered.

A study which discusses the structural problems in Zambia and the policies of adjustment that have been tried. It also analyses the impact of various strategies with regard to external resource transfers. The results show that the scope for growth is highly dependent on the tightness of the external resource constraint, and that debt service tends to dominate the policy-making.

      Book Description

Million Dollar QuestionsT is a book with the purpose of finding out exactly what the average person would be willing to do for a million dollars. In witty and sometimes plain ridiculous situations, author John R. Peak poses questions that would make even the most money hungry of us think twice about how much we really care about money. You will be tested to think about the importance of your religion, family, self respect, personal safety, and your health, just to name a few. This book will reveal to each of us that there are many things in our lives that are worth much more than a measly million dollars. In an increasingly materialistic society, it is long overdue that you ask yourself: "What Would You Do For A Million Dollars?T". Every time you turn on the television, you see someone doing something to try to win big money. Whether it's answering trivia questions on a game show, trying to be discovered as an entertainer or eating gross things that you would never normally eat, everyone is after the almighty dollar. This book is for the rest of us: we are the ones that watch the reality shows but will likely never be picked to be on one. They can have their shows and their easy money. Reality TV is a walk in the park when compared to the challenges presented here. As long as we are all sitting on the sidelines, we may as well be able to ask each other Million Dollar QuestionsT.

I ordered the book and have had some great laughs reading this to my friends. The ultimate book for a party!

3 out of 5 stars a good bio but with errors.......2007-08-07

This was a pretty good bio but there were a lot of errors in it and it's a bit surprising that the publisher didn't proof it better as some were obvious like having Lars and James living in two cities at the same time (one that doesn't even exist. The author wrote in one paragraph it was La Brea but got it right in the next with Brea). Lars must have been really rich back in the balony sandwich days to afford to live in both Newport Beach and Huntington Beach! And those cities are in Orange County (as is Anaheim) not Los Angeles despite what the owner of a certain baseball team wants you to believe. The author's passion for the band came through and this is well worth reading but beware the errors (there are far more than the simple geographic ones I pointed out above).

4 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, but Pretty Good.......2004-12-07

This is very nicely put together book. It's filled with great pictures - a lot from the early stages of the band, pictures with other well-known musicians and awesome Pushead artwork. It's not the standard promo pix that one usually sees. The history is written in a personal, almost conversational tone, instead of being more 'scholarly', which adds to the appeal. Doughton can pull this off easily since he was friends with Metallica and other people involved with the band back around that time.

The book only starts to show its weaknesses when it gets to around the ...And Justice For All period, as it becomes obvious that Metallica were becoming huge stars and he was having less contact with them from that point going forward. Still, for the early days, this book can't be beat and is more factually accurate than other unauthorized biographies written around the same time. Fans will love the book.

5 out of 5 stars This is how to do a band bio.......2003-09-10

Spanning Metallica's entire history up until 1993; this slickly put together unofficial biography is an absolute must have for Metallica fans young and old. Full of facts (both widely known and others not known at all) and unpublished pictures of the band from their garage days to their glory days, the only thing that K.J. Doughton's book lacks is in terms of depth about Cliff Burton's untimely death and more of what Jason Newsted went through in joining the band. All that aside however, out of all the "unauthorized" and "unofficial" biographies of Metallica that have been out there for years, this is undoubtadly the most well put together one, and is surely the best.

5 out of 5 stars Best Metallica bio I've found.......2003-06-20

"Metallica Unbound" has the best and most complete (minus the ten years between when it was made and now) biography of Metallica I have yet to find. It has everything from Lars' coming to America to 1993 Metallica. Not only is it complete, but it's hard to put down. If you're a Metallica fan who wants a bio, look no further than this.

      5 out of 5 stars Battle scars.......2001-10-06

This book gives plenty of info and loads of cool pictures a must for dedicated Metali-fans!

Slipback is a BBC radio play made during the 1986 Dr. Who hiatus. I was glad to see it had been released on CD because I have been wondering what this story was like on the radio ever since I bought the novelisation 10 years ago. It was particularily delightful to hear Valentine Dyall's (The Black Guardians) voice as the repugnant disease ridden starship captain. I thought he had already passed away at the time Slipback was made so it was a great surprise to see he made one last contribution to Dr. Who before the end of his life. Beyond that... the story seems to try to emulate a lot of the qualities of Douglas Adams Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy. The 'dumb blond' voice of the computer reminds me of Trillian when she was making announcements over the Heart of Gold's comm system. There's even a brief appearance of a depressed robot. Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant are their usual selves. Baker his typical loud self. At the end of one of the episodes he is told that everybody including himself will die and he exclaims 'NOOOOOOOO!!!' right as the Dr. Who theme music rolls. This CD is cute, but I suggest it only for die hard Dr. Who fans like myself.

During the 1985 hiatus of Doctor Who, there was one small spark of hope: a six part radio play featuring the Doctor and Peri. A spark of hope, that is, until you get to read this awful book.

The radio serial was never broadcast here in Australia, so this book is the first time I got to experience it (I have later on heard it). Written for both radio and this book by the contemporary Doctor Who script Editor, Eric Saward, I am yet again struck by the man's complete failure to grasp the fundamentals of what Doctor Who is about.

The story starts with the Doctor waking up with a hangover, a decidedly unDoctorish thing to do, and continues with very poor understanding of the show. The notional villain, Slarn, never actually meets either the Doctor or Peri and seems to be the kind of character that would feature in some low-grade British comedy.

In fact the whole thing is just plain silly and not a terribly good use of s well-loved fictional character. Don't rush out to find this one.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent material for newbies or refresher's.......2005-10-09

Bought the entire series for acad '06 PartI,II and 3d Acad
I studied Acad over 10 years ago but never really used it. when I decided to use it I had forgotten so much. (Although the memory of reading "Inside Acad" R12 by NRP Isbn:1562050559 left ALOT to be desired!) In fact I like the Part I book so much I went out and Purchased a 2nd monitor so I could read and draw at full screen.then came PartII and ... best 30.00 bucks I ever spent. Although I guess I could have spent 3 semesters in a Cad class at a local college. RIGHT!.... If you are a Self-taught kind of person? then these are the books for you.

                5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Approach.......2005-09-02

I gave this text five stars because of its excellent approach to teaching difficult material. The text makes me feel as though the author is right at me side while I go through the lessons. The lessons are quite thorough and broken into bite-sized chunks so I can follow them. What's more, I had a problem with the files (I entered the wrong address to download them) and when I contacted the publisher, I received a helpful response within 30 minutes!
If all textbooks were this easy to use, we'd have a much better educated workforce today.
Thanks Forager Publications, and good job.

                5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2005-08-17

Good book. Easy to follow instructions (really step-by-step as opposed to many books that claim to be). Saved me the money it would've cost for a class. Wish it had come in one volume, but no real problem. Author even helped me when I had a problem.
                Good job.

5 out of 5 stars Well Deserved Five Stars.......2005-08-04

I used Parts I and II of the One Step at a Time eBooks to learn AutoCAD and was impressed with the books. Each topic begins with a brief explanation and is followed by easy to follow step by step demonstrations/instructions. Some more difficult topics (like the apparently new "block" tools) I doubt I could have mastered without the step by step approach, but this text made even the difficult manageable (it made the easy downright fun!).
I'm not an easy student, but the author made me feel like one.
A five star recommendation is well deserved and gladly given!

5 out of 5 stars One Outstanding Book in Two Parts.......2005-07-25

I've used Sykes' AutoCAD texts in my classes since 2000. Each year, I review at least half a dozen other titles, but haven't found anyone who covers the material as thoroughly and, frankly, makes it as easy for novice students.
The 2006 release of AutoCAD presents some new challenges - dynamic input (which Sykes covers in Part I) and especially dynamic blocks (which he covers remarkably well in Part II). Other material, both old and new, is covered in a simple, friendly manner in both Parts - "one step at a time."
I'd like to see both parts together, but I understand the new POD style (Sykes publishes through a POD publisher) has size limitations.
All in all, I was quite impressed with the One Step at a Time series in 2000 and am still impressed today.

The author of this text should be congratulated. He tackles a difficult (and scary) subject and makes it seem easy. And he does it with a sense of humor.
Five stars and my thanks for helping me master what I'd always been afraid to try!
