Book Description
These twenty-one collected readings describe the origins and growth of the revolutionary approach to macroeconomic analysis known as rational expectations. The readings trace the development of this approach from the late 1970s, when it was viewed by many as radical, to the present, when it has attained a central position in macroeconomic theory and policymaking.
In the 1970s the rational expectations school challenged the traditonal Keynesian view of the world. Economic models built on the ideas of John Maynard Keynes treat the economy more or less as a system of controllable inanimate objects blindly following rules. Models built on the new ideas attempt to acknowledge the ability of humans to change behavior when they expect economic policies to change. The repercussions of this dramatic shift in thought are still being felt among practicing macroeconomic theorists and policymakers.
Much of the research on the rational expectations approach has been done by scholars affiliated with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. The readings in this book were all originally published by the Fed, primarily as articles written to be understood by college-level economics students and noneconomist policymakers. Some of the articles are modern classics that are otherwise out of print. Scholars represented here include such prominent economists as Robert E. Lucas, Jr., Edward C. Prescott, Thomas J. Sargent, Michael R. Darby, Finn E. Kydland, Lawrence H. Summers, and Neil Wallace.
The book also includes introductory essays by Preston J. Miller, an economist and Vice President at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. Miller explains the context in which the articles were originally published and guides readers through the basic disputes between the old and new macroeconomic approaches.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best Bette Biography.......2003-06-13
This book which was first released in the 1980s by author Mark Bego gets updated and reworked here. It is impressive to see such a comprehensive scaling of the Divine's long career. Want to hear about some current projects like Bathhouse Betty and her films such as DROWNING MONA and the like, this is the book. I am someone who enjoys reading about others' perspectives on some of my favorite artists. I especially like to read and hear about recent endeavors. Because there has not been a Bette biography since 1997's spectacular BETTE MIDLER SCRAPBOOK and 1995's BETTE by George Mair, that was a long period of no coverage of some of Midler's material. Well, here goes. Even if one is not a Bette fan, one could still enjoy this biography which provides various aspects of the entertainer in a unique form.
Best that's out there, but...........2003-04-11
For years, I have searched for the ultimate Bette Midler biography - one that is chock full of never before heard or told anecdotes, a fresh perspective and insights into oft told situations or tales.
Mark Bego's book is the closest thing we've got right now to a definitive, somewhat linear bio, but it still leaves much to be desired.
I do appreciate that Bego (clearly a fan in his own right) takes the time to go in depth with Midler's albums, making sure every track is commented upon and giving us loads of quality info about the recording process. I love hearing about why certain songs were chosen, discarded, arranged the way they were, et cetera.
The most in depth album commentary in this book is in regards to Bette's *Songs From the New Depression.* The more I read about this lost possibility, the more curious I am to hear the material. It genuinely sounds like it could have led Midler's career in a completely different, more upward musical direction. I do hope Atlantic Records gives Klingman the master tapes back.
No other book has given me a clear picture of what Bette's days at the Continental Baths were like, and I am grateful for that. Such a vivid description of the place and the time. It must have been a ball.
This is also the first telling of Bette's life that gives an indication that Aaron Russo (Bette's manager in the 70's) and Bette were never romantically involved at all. However, the narrative seems fuzzy on whether or not that is entirely accurate.
The aspect of Bette's career that seems to get shortest shrift is her movies. Each one is given a full plot synopsis, which in my opinion, isn't a good idea, for it ruins the movies for newer fans or people who have not seen them. These plot synopses seem to be masking some glaringly obvious missing information. No 'tales from the set' are told. No comments from co-stars or directors (except in the Jinxed section) on what it was like to work with Bette beyond your standard "press-kit" comments.
Even so, there are still some interesting tidbits spread out here and there. One of them is that Anne Archer and Donna Mills where considered for the role of Hillary Whitney in Beaches!
One rather odd thing is the use of numbers in parenthesis after every single quote. I've never seen a device like that in a book, and it made me feel like I was reading a college term paper. Although, on the flip side, I appreciate the quotes are there -- it ensures a degree of accuracy and if I ever want to look up these articles, it's a good resource.
Also, there is serious need for a fact-checker / proof-reader here. Too many noticeable spelling errors, character or actor names misprinted or mis-spelled, etc. I don't want to blame the writer entirely, because this stuff should be checked before going to press.
All in all, I recommend this book, but more for the fact that there really isn't a quality Midler bio out there to compare it to. Perhaps there never will be, unless Bette decides to tell her own story.
15 years later ,the revised book is still under researched.......2003-02-07
After all this time you'd have thought someone would have informed Mr Bego that Billy Cunningham was a musical director more so than a piano player and that when he stopped playing for Ms Midler at the Baths he didn't exactly exit . Even after writing Cher If You Believe, he still doesn't know who Kenny (Claude )Sasha was and why the off Broadway run of French Dressing at the Village Gate (Top of the Gate) and Cher's Act had a lot more to do with the drag bar scene in "The Rose" than Bette' s wanting to be a legendary movie star. The sad part is by the time he revises the book again even more of sources he should have interviewed the first time around won't be with us.

Book Description
Marc Swartz takes us for the first time into the homes and neighborhoods of the Swahili in the East African port of Mombasa. At the same time he develops a new model for the operation and transmission of culture.
In asking how cultural elements influence the social behavior of those who do not share them as well as of those who do, Swartz points to the mediation of status. The many types of status available to individuals provide guidelines that help explain, for example, why the broadly shared elements of Swahili culture (Islamic religion or the nuclear family) do not alone translate into behavior. The Way the World Is demonstrates in a highly original way how culture "works."

Don't Buy the Book!!!!!!! I Give It 0 Stars!!!!!!!.......2006-04-12
Personally, I haven't bought the book. But I wouldn't buy it because it is an UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY. Usually, the information from these books comes from TV shows, magazines, tabloids, etc. I'm a fan of Patrick Stewart and even if I wasn't, I wouldn't buy the book because most of it is probably not true or allegedly true. When Mr. Stewart rights his own biography or gives someone permission to write it for him, then I'll believe it.
What garbage!.......1999-12-30
In deference to my longstanding crush on Patrick Stewart, my husband gave this to me as a joke, and a joke it is! If I were to gather up a pile of fanzines, tabloids and talk show video clips, I could have written this book (although I hope I would have proofread it a little better. The typos are legion.) The "authors" did nothing except cut and paste previously published material -- no additional research or interviews went into producing it. Faithfully repeating what Mr. Stewart said to Jay Leno is about as insightful as it gets. All my Amazon pals who gave this 5 stars might want to try reading a real biography some time!
outstanding behind-the-scenes look at STTNG.......1998-10-09
I found the biographical information on Stewart very interesting and well done. Plus, the book gives a great look at the happenings behind the scenes during the making of the Next Generation television series. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and had a hard time putting it down.
Solid research marred by tabloid-style narrative.......1998-08-08
Authors Hatfield and Burt sifted through mountains of press clippings and hours of interviews to give their readers a solid foundation of facts about the life of actor Patrick Stewart. These facts, however, are often couched in an "En-quiring minds want to know" writing style that does a great disservice, at times, to their subject as well as their own hard work. Tales of Stewart's violent childhood are harrowing enough without the Dickensian embellishments by Hatfield/Burt. The star's private life (an oxymoron?) as "documented" in tabloid headlines gets an extra dash of spice by the smirking account supplied by the authors. Stories of conflict with Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry show Stewart as a canny operator not unlike some of the Shakepearean villians he has portrayed. Hatfield and Burt didn't need to resort to tabloidization; the truth is colorful and fascinating enough. Stewart fans hungry for information will find facts and documentatio! n in plenty here, and overlook the dramatizations.
juicy but respectful personal view of Patrick Stewart.......1998-06-30
More than just the Star Trek years, this book really goes into Stewart's youth. It is very focused on his personal life. The photos are nice and the tone of the book is respectful, but it does pry very deeply into Stewart's personal life.
Customer Reviews:
For me it was a waste of money.......2007-04-23
This book is very dense, both in layout and writing style. It is long on verbose discussion and short on practical examples and advice. For example there 24 pages on release version numbering but only 8 pages on revision branching and merging.
The layout would have benefited from lists and more diagrams. It would also have been useful to have more example templates and processes.
What also annoyed were the basic mistakes e.g. How to correctly number a branch revision (it should normally be parentRev.BranchNumber.RevisionOnBranch, not parentRev.RevisionOnBranch).
I think the editors must take a significant portion of the blame for failing to help the author deliver a more readable book
Definitely not worth the money.......2006-04-28
If you are working for a company that makes software, chances are you have a guy who is assigned the task of release management. Do yourself a favor and go talk to this guy -- you'll probably get better insights than this book has to offer after draining $50 bucks out of your pocket. I only gave it 2 stars since the author touches on the right topics but fails to deliver useful content.
He delves into one specific style of release management and engineering (probably what the author's company does) and does not talk too much about alternate styles at all -- and the release methodology suggested by the book is less elegant than some of the release processes I've seen.
And as a bonus, a few blank pages serves as the index for the book. I was expecting better quality of content and presentation from Prentice Hall.
Good Information, Poor Quality.......2005-10-21
Just received this book after waiting 2 months for it. I purchased it because it is often referenced in other CM books.
After just scanning through the book, I can tell that it contains some valuable information. One big minus is the index consists of blank pages, which is really bad for a technical book.
The physical quality of the book is very poor. Cheap binding, cheap paper, cheap type. Except for the nice cover, it looks like it was thrown together at Kinkos.
What really irks me is that I paid almost $50 for this book. This is something I would pay $10 for a PDF download.
Software Release explained in detail.......2005-06-14
Excellent details for SCM/CM strategies. Starts off with a couple of chapters for beginner's to SCM. Then covers every aspect of Release Process. The chapter on integration process was detailed like no other SCM book that I've seen. The book explains concepts of software development from the perspective of a Release Engineer -- from source control branching/merging strategies, to build control, aspects of development cycle, then to product release. One of the better CM SCM books out there. None of the others SCM books look at it from a Release Engineer's perspective like this one. If you are already passed the basics of SCM then this book will complete your training.
I have only skimmed through this book, but.......2004-08-13
Have you noticed that in a book about release methodology, they have forgotten to release a part of the book? There is a title, it's in the TOC, and a few pages even serve as a placeholder, but the Index is simply missing. At least in my copy of the book... oops.

Customer Reviews:
SPSS.......2004-03-23
An excellent book, especially for those who are now learning to use SPSS and the applications of statistical tests. The book however is lacking details for the advanced statistics - Loginlear analysis etc.More could have been said with regards to the data assumptions necessary to meet statistical analysis. Nevertheless it provides the reader with sufficient knowledge with regards to the use of SPSS, and is recommended for those who don't need to go indepth into multivariate analysis.
the best intro for dummies.......2003-07-31
this book is great, i can recommend it to all who are autodidact and want to learn what spss can do with your data. it is easy to read and simple to follow and it has no formula, what is crucial to non-statisticians but seldomly thought about by those who write books on stats for users only. great stuff you have done here, authors!
