Customer Reviews:
Worth the price.......2007-10-19
Third photoshop book (slow learner) I have purchased and is as good or better than others. Easy to follow if you follow the precise directions. Video on disc that comes with it really helps as it previews the lessons in the book.
Decent book for beginners, but buggy with Vista.......2007-10-19
Because I could not get the DVD lessons to work on my computer, I have only read the first lesson, so please keep that in mind while assessing my review.
Despite a major effort, I could not get the primary function of the DVD -- the lessons -- to perform using MS Windows Vista (Home Premium). So, for Vista users, I would give this book 2 stars rather than 3. Because I could not use the entire panoply of teaching media, I can only speculate that I might give it 3 or even 4 stars for an XP (or other OS) user.
The video lectures on the DVD are not very good. They don't hurt anything but they were a waste of time for me. The writer/lecturer spends a lot of time hemming and hawing, and the presentation is generally quite slow and lacking good interactivity or "now do this" interactivity. (Again, there is a chance some of the later videos might be better, but these faults are basic and so I doubt it.)
As a comparison, Adobe has free online videos that move like lightning. (I have only used the CS3 version.) You have to stop the Adobe online videos frequently and watch them a number of times -- they move way faster than I can absorb information -- but at least you don't have to sit through an amateurish talking head rambling on about himself, the video, etc.
In summary, for me, the DVD was a total waste of time and money. In fact, it was a major pain in the neck. You are forced to spend time and brain power just learning how to use the book, installing the software, setting up your computer, etc., just to use it well enough to see if you like it. "How to use this book" is 14 pages long.
The book standing alone is competent and useful, but not great. Because there are so many pictures, large margins, large print, heavy paper, etc., the amount of content is limited. Still, as far as I could tell, it gets a beginner through a lot of the basics. Unlike some other reviewers, I found it satisfactory as a beginner. However, I was already competent in PaintShop Pro, so I may have had a head start.
The only mistakes I found were infrequent and very minor, dealing with changing notation for Windows OS. I suspect the author's primary computer (like many graphic artists) is an Apple Mac, and the commands are translated for Windows. This isn't really a drawback for a Windows user, but it leads me to suspect that the DVD may work more seamlessly on a Mac. (And if you are or want to be a graphic artist, you really might consider using an Apple computer.)
To me, the book is not comprehensive enough within the individual segments, even for a beginner. However, all the basic bases needed to use Photoshop are covered.
Edit: I have watched more lesson videos in the CS3 edition of this book. The later videos are very different from the first one; they get to the point without wasting time. At worst, they don't feel like a waste of time, and at best, they are helpful. (The CS3 edition also abandons auto-installation, which is a big help.)
The lesson files are very helpful to using the book. Especially for the beginner, they allow the reader to follow verbatim instructions to get a specific result, which would be a godsend to someone who was totally confused. So I feel that I would give this book "four stars" for someone who uses Windows XP (assuming that it installs correctly on XP!).
Photoshop follow directions and try it........2007-09-14
This book I am using with a class I am taking. The instructions take a few chapters to get used to the writers style. The author covers a lot of good things that are very useful in photography as well as graphics. The only thing is the guy just can't take very good photos, but you can fix that, learn the basics from this book and take your'e own photo's! There is a lot to learn in this book to adapt to your own style! Go for it!!!
The why of Photoshop.......2007-05-04
As a web designer whose strength is in coding and scripting, Photoshop has always seemed to be a cauldron of black magic to me. The knowledgible knew how to coax results from the tempermental pot, but we newbies were most likely to get burned. While Photoshop's unfriendly, counter-intuitive environment is partly to blame, a host of "follow this list of steps to make a button/background/fancy text/whatever without learning why these steps are necessary" tutorials - both on the web and in books - also share some of the responsibility.
Thankfully, McClelland's book more than makes up for the lax presentations of scores of wannabe Photoshop authors.
To get right to the point, One-on-One is an exercise in describing the why of Photoshop. While the book is filled with tutorials (a few per chapter), they all fit into a shared context. McClelland doesn't just tell the reader to slavishly follow his steps, but WHY they're necessary and WHY they work. He teaches the reader how to read a color historgram, why relying on Photoshop's auto image adjustment tools are only the first step in editing an image, even rudimentary color theory. I honestly learned more by reading the first chapter in this book then by struggling through a host of inane tutorials.
In short, One-on-One does it right. It's a must-have for any potential Photoshop user.
Brilliantly useful.......2007-03-31
After a few unsatisfactory experiences, I was quite ready to admit the art of photography mending is beyond my capacities, and Deke McClelland's "Adobe Photoshop CS2" was in a way some "ultimate try" at the subject. After reading this book, I am aware of the fact I still have a lot to learn, but I am now confident I can reach some satisfactory level in using the powerful software Photoshop is.
In its step-by-step manner, this book is a masterpiece of pedagogy. The teaching, precise as well as relevant, is lavishly accompanied by superior illustrations. Without ever being overwhelmingly patronizing, it goes when necessary into precious details, all the time making sure the reader is able not only of acting the right way, but also of understanding why it is the right way.
If you are in need of learning how to use Photoshop CS2, this is the book for you.

Book Description
This volume comprises fifteen papers exploring the consequences of applying modern time-series methods, particularly co-integrated time-series methods, for the analysis of forest economics problems. The methods represent the forefront of econometrics in this area, and the volume is the first of its kind.
An introductory paper explains the econometrics of unit-root processes. Much of what follows in the other papers depends upon only a few of the ideas presented in the introduction. The volume includes tests of, e.g., the Law of One Price, land valuation models, demand and supply models, Granger-causality, and forecast models.
The reader will learn a great deal about forest economies, particularly in Northern Europe, and about the practical use of modern time-series methods. The methods presented are applicable to other fields of economics.
The volume is aimed at researchers in applied economics and as a supplement to (advanced) theoretical textbooks, mainly in Natural Resource Economics.

The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings

Book Description
What's an urban legend? It's a story that gets passed around so frequently that no one really knows how it began. All we know is that the tale is so amusing, dark, coincidental or ironic that, whether it's true or not, we are dying to believe it--and pass it on.
In the successful tradition of Alligators in the Sewer and The Baby on the Car Roof, this all-new collection of over 200 urban legends offers the latest and greatest tales so weird and funny that they just have to be true. Includin the firemen who rescued a stranded cat and then ran over it; the baby born in flight who was given free air travel for life; the drug-test cheater who was caught when his urine sample revealed him to be pregnant.
Organized by genre, each story in The Cat in the Dryer runs one or two pages, and features possible variations and embellishments. Subjects range from famous people to disturbing pranks, from holiday nightmares to creepy stories, and from military misadventures to pet disasters.

223 Urban Legends.......2004-04-29
This is my first Urban Legend book and now I'm hooked on them. The first one I read was 500 Best Urban Legends and it was great. This book however was much better. From Skinned Tom to the Haunted Shower this was a great book. Most of this book was political but still a good book. If you like Urban Legends this is a must have.
Great UL series takes hard-right turn.......2003-02-05
I have read the first two books in this series, and was very pleased with them. However, this last one has lots and lots of Democrat- and liberal-bashing. Conspicuously, many of the urban legends/myths about the right wing taking over the world, etc. were absent, even though many of them are extremely entertaining, and would have provided a good contrast with the other political ULs in this book.
Astounding.......2002-09-25
Thomas Craughwell is the brilliant maestro conducting his symphony of tales of a friend's friend. Mr Craughwell has outdone himself with another installment in the increasingly popular series of books on urban legends. He has the passion and heart that many authors of today lack. He plungs into the deep caverns of the darkness of the human psycke with the tales "Back From The Dead" and "Royal African Millionaires Neep Your Help!" His other works provided meaningful and thought comments on socio-economic problems as well as his own quaint philosophies. "Saints For Every Occasion," the "50 States Fandex," and the "Book Lover's Page-a-Day Calender" all give the reader an incredible insight into the mind that is Thomas J Craughwell.
Book Description
Forced by a hand injury to abandon a career as a pianist, Robert Schumann went on to become one of the world's great composers. Among many works, his Spring Symphony (1841), Piano Concerto in A Minor (1841/1845), and the Third, or Rhenish, Symphony (1850) exemplify his infusion of classical forms with intense, personal emotion. His musical influence continues today and has inspired many other famous composers in the century since his death. Indeed Brahms, in a letter of January 1873, wrote: "The remembrance of Schumann is sacred to me. I will always take this noble pure artist as my model." Now, in Robert Schumann: Herald of a "New Poetic Age," John Daverio presents the first comprehensive study of the composer's life and works to appear in nearly a century. Long regarded as a quintessentially romantic figure, Schumann also has been portrayed as a profoundly tragic one: a composer who began his career as a genius and ended it as a mere talent. Daverio takes issue with this Schumann myth, arguing instead that the composer's entire creative life was guided by the desire to imbue music with the intellectual substance of literature. A close analysis of the interdependence among Schumann's activities as reader, diarist, critic, and musician reveals the depth of his literary sensibility. Drawing on documents only recently brought to light, the author also provides a fresh outlook on the relationship between Schumann's mental illness--which brought on an extended sanitarium stay and eventual death in 1856--and his musical creativity. Schumann's character as man and artist thus emerges in all its complexity. The book concludes with an analysis of the late works and a postlude on Schumann's influence on successors from Brahms to Berg. This well-researched study of Schumann interprets the composer's creative legacy in the context of his life and times, combining nineteenth-century cultural and intellectual history with a fascinating analysis of the works themselves.

A Dignified and Knowledgeable Treatment.......2005-12-22
As other reviewers have said, this is not the biography to read if you want to be titillated by the real or imagined sexual peccadillos of a great master. Instead, this is a critical biography in the best sense. John Daverio's book unfolds Schumann's life with warmth and deep respect for its subject and without undo speculation. Then it goes on to an appreciation of the music whose only failing might be a too-positive appraisal of some works that critics have formerly been cool or even hostile toward. In certain cases, though, Daverio is clearly right. Obviously a well-trained musician, perhaps he can imagine beauties that others have not found through a study of the scores, for many of the works he praises are not available in recorded form--some haven't been heard for ages, I'm sure. This includes, for example, the choral ballads from Schumann's last years. Daverio praises Das Gluck von Edenhall as the finest among them and even argues for its rehabilitation to the repertoire. Knowing Die Sangers Fluch and other examples of Schumann's late choral music, I'm somewhat skeptical. The music in these works is generally four-square and lacking in the orchestral and vocal color the master brought to earlier pieces such as Paradise und die Peri or Requiem fur Mignon. But who can say? Perhaps Das Gluck is an unknown gem that should be taken up again by choral-music groups.
The point is that Daverio listens afresh to (or imagines skillfully from the printed score) music that others have dismissed as the work of a genius in decline, and he makes an undeniable point: though Schumann's last works are uneven, they don't represent a thorough collapse of musical powers but in some cases a wholly new approach to musical problems. This is true, say, of the works for violin from the last years, the sonatas and Fantasia. They are unusual even in the context of Schumann's other chamber and concerted works but in no way suggest a diminution of compositional strength.
In his appreciation of Schumann's growth as a composer, Daverio reminds me of Joan Chissell, the eminent British Schumann scholar, whose music reviews appeared for years in the Gramophone. I recall that she was constantly revising her estimate upwards for Schumann works each time she actually heard them in recording for the first time, explaining that it was impossible to imagine from the score alone how effective they actually were. Daverio goes even farther out on a critical limb, arguing for the importance of works that haven't been played by anybody for years. And his enthusiasm is infectious, partly because his writing is so good--clean, clear, unaffected, but engaging. Besides, Daverio was clearly right about one work. His book praises Das Paradise und die Peri as a neglected classic of Romanticism. Small wonder, then, that he was chosen to write the notes for John Eliot Gardiner's marvellous recording of the same that appeared on DG a few years ago. And if you haven't heard this recording, do. It proves Daverio right beyond the slightest doubt.
If you are a Schumann lover, this carefully considered, tastefully appreciative biography should be on your bookshelf.
Superb scholarship, daring musical analysis.......2004-06-18
Daverio's biography of Robert Schuman eschews the hackneyed themes familiar to what he terms "psychobiography"--dwelling on the supposed interrelationship between Schumann's idiosyncratic style and his mental collapse following the composition of the marvelous "Gesange der Fruhe." Instead, he offers insight after insight into the originality of Schumann's musical (and literary) genius, especially as they inform what he terms Schumann's uniquely "literary" musical enterprise. A must read for any Schumann devotee.
Top-notch Biography and Analysis.......2001-07-17
This biography is a superb survey of Schumann's life and works. Those of us who adore Schumann's music have found a great musicologist and champion in John Daverio. His insight into German Romantic music was already made stunningly clear in his previous book on 19th Century music and German Romantic Ideology. Now this book concentrates on the arch-Romantic composer who synthesized the old and the new to create a "New Way" for music. While being deeply analytical when necessary, particularly in regard to the musical works themselves, Daverio writes in a very accessible style which brings his subject quite vividly to life. And Daverio's concluding remarks are timely, beautiful and extremely touching. Just a wonderful book in every respect.

not very useful.......2007-05-08
can find most of the info on the internet only for those wanting to open up the tivo
Not very enlightening.......2006-04-05
This book by the cover appears to be a very in-depth book when in fact it is meant to be a sort of text book. I have taught for over 4 years and this company was a primary source of text books. Over all their text books are of good quality, but leave a bit more to be desired. I found this book to be in-line with my history with this publisher. In fact if I had known that the book was by them I would not have purchased it for myself. That was my mistake for not paying closer attention.
The book offers the typical level of information that I would expect from this publisher. It will provide enough information to dazzle those of you that are not so technically inclined, and may even impress you. For those that have a bit of technical knowledge. You will find the book basic and leaving you at a point where you will either want to know more, or are not sure if this book offered you any more information than you already knew.
Anyone that is serious about finding out information about the Tivo box, the actual software, or remote hacking is pretty basic and offers no real interesting information that will really improve your Tivo experience. It offers information about changing the text and displaying information on the screen that really has no realavence, or benefit.
As for the hardware hacking, this information may be interesting to someone that may be timid about opening the box. If you have any real computer experience, you could have figured most of this information on your own.
In my best oppinion I would pass on this book. In fact if any other Tivo books are of similar quality I would save the money and find a good library to check it out for free. Even if it is late you will have still spent less than the shipping.
Excellent Book, Pathetic Editing.......2005-09-11
As usual for the past 15 years, the editors were asleep at the wheel and completely hosed the vital (to brain-damaged Linux) command line arguments -- at least on page 39 (Chapter 2: Adding a Larger Hard Disk to Your TiVo).
If you're transferring everything over to a larger hard drive using the "mfstool" commands the correct arguments are as follows (I've used "[space]" to indicate a single space between commands):
mfstool[space]backup[space]-o-[space]-a[space]/dev/hdb[space]|[space]mfstool[space]restore[space]-i-[space]-C[space]/dev/hdd
Idiot copyeditors and typesetters. Idiot editors in general.
System information.......2005-08-10
The current, non-DirecTV system, updated by satellite, is actually 7.1 (as of 9 August 2005). I haven't found that any of the hacking books are especialy useful for Series 2 boxes, especially as the software upgrades.
DirecTV Tivo System-2 software Updates - now 6.1.......2005-08-02
While this book contains some useful information for older Tivo boxes, the Series-2 has been Upgraded automatically by the Satellite to an even higher version. While the other reviewer, recently written, says it's now 5.3 and nobody has figured it out without actually tweaking hardware and reinstalling the chip (definately NOT recommended), the Software has already been upgraded again. As of now, 8/1/05, it is Version 6.1.
