We were aware of the content prior to ordering, so we knew what we were getting. However, two of the four covers were torn. Since all were for gifts, we were disappointed that they were damaged.

Many with old candid long forgotten pictures.
These were given to family members from Coast to Coast. Even though

100 pictures say a million words..........2005-07-04

This is an amazing book. It captures America at its finest and also not-so finest, but thats America for you. "They" say a picture says 1,000 words but there are so many pictures in this book that capture life at its fullest and these pictures say a million words. I rented the book from the library for the longest time and kept renewing it because I enjoyed looking at it so often, and finally I bought my own- and several others like Missouri 24/7, California 24/7, florida 24/7... etc. This is something that should be sitting on your coffee table, or at least something you look through once.

Great Gift Idea, Great Custom Cover.......2004-08-06

I bought this book as a gift after hearing about it on NPR. The custom cover looked fantastic. I'm not sure what happened with those customers who gave this a 1 star. My experience with the custom cover process and the service was extremely smooth. They told me it would take 3 weeks but I received it in 5 days. THERE'S NO BETTER GIFT FOR A SOMEONE INTERESTED IN PHOTOGRAPHY. GET READY FOR BIG HUGS AT THE UNWRAPPING!

wonderful book and custom cover!.......2004-06-23

The book has beautiful photographs and wonderful captions full of miniature stories. I ordered a cover, and when I had trouble with uploading (I'm not very computer literate) their customer service team got back to me in a day and they helped me through it -- even resizing my picture for me. My custom cover order came in three weeks. I have to say it was really worth the effort seeing the final cover in my hands. I'm surprised they don't charge us more for the whole thing. I've ordered many more as gifts. Their new site is easier to use and I was even able to track my order using the USPS tracking number they gave me. I would expect any company trying out a whole new idea to take a few months to get such a large operation together, but now its June and the site seems so be working great! I would give it another chance if you had problems in the past. I'm a satisfied customer and I hope they get more positive reviews because I know they're really trying their best.

The role of deterministic variables and the connection with the concept of cointegration is discussed at length. The book also provides criteria to select among alternative structures. In addition, the asymptotic distributions of the structural estimates of impulse response functions and forecast error variance decomposition coefficients are obtained and used to construct asymptotically based confidence intervals around the maximum likelihood estimates. Moreover, the book contains a critical evaluation of the problem of non-fundamental representations and of their relevance on the interpretability of the results of structural VAR analysis. Papadimitriou's introduction places the thesis in a modern context, and explains its relevance today. If there was a 6 star choice, it would be mine. I am a theatre freak and this is definately on the top 3 list of my favorite musicals. The music is astounding and is incredibly beautiful. I love it. It was in my best interest to buy this book, it's amazing. It's great for kids, too.

A work in the publisher's series Sport and Popular Culture, "Retro Ball Parks" looks at the urban phenomenon of the building of new, state-of-the-art, baseball stadiums to try to bring back this sport as it is viewed nostalgically. These are the stadiums built in cities around the country usually with some public funds and big tax breaks and other economic favors to the team owners. They are characterized by costly suites for corporate and well-to-do fans, rising ticket prices for all levels of regular seats from boxes to bleachers, moveable roofs and other features to provide comfort for the fans, and corporate logos lining the walls of the playing fields. Rosensweig is interested not only in how these stadiums promising revivals of urban centers come to be out of aspects of contemporary culture and political and economic interests; and also in the peculiar, particularly postmodern, notion of authenticity regarding baseball such stadiums are supposed to revive. In many cases, new businesses have sprung up around the new stadiums attempting to replicate neighborhoods that have been torn down to make way for them. Rosenweig's feelings on this phenomenon he covers are seen in the title of his introduction--"Cheap Grace." The author did most of his research in Cleveland, where the Cleveland Indian's Jacobs Field was built as the anchor of the Gateway Developmental District. "The Gateway serves as a fascinating case study of the cultural shifts enacted by the transformation of a city's economic base from local commerce and manufacturing to recreational tourism." Stadiums in other cities are brought in as well, notably the Baltimore Orioles' Camden Yards, the major urban stadium project giving rise to the others. Rosenweig is a professor of Inter-Disciplinary Studies at the U. of Virginia.

Estrella provides a quick introduction to JavaScript. Enough details to understand the basic coding ideas. The illustrations and examples are also well chosen to reinforce this learning.

He demonstrates that JavaScript can greatly enhance the interactivity of your web pages. It complements the static features of HTML, by letting you write dynamic pages, that have behaviour as well as a single visual representation.

The book does not try to give a comprehensive overview of the language. But it should encourage you to seek out more information.

Not for novice programmers.......2003-08-05

I love the web wizard's series, and had high hopes for using this book in an intro-level course. But the programming concepts come too fast for someone who hasn't done any programming. Chapter 1 throws out a zillion concepts without giving enough concrete examples of how they are used, so they will remain abstract to novices.

An example: comparison operators are introduced on page 10, when one has no conceivable use for them. And then on page 20, we get to loops, and on page 21, conditional statements. You just can't pick up javascript this way unless you already know how to program.

This is probably a fine book for folks who already know how to program, but want to pick up javascript. But OTOH, if you already know how to program, aren't you ready for the O'Reilly Javascript books?

I'm not sure what this book's niche is. I thought the web wizard's series was for novices.

Solid Introduction To JavaScript.......2002-02-06

This book does the job. It teaches concepts not just code. You can get lots of code examples for free on the internet. The only reason to buy a book is to learn how things work not just how to make things happen. One nice feature of the book is that it doesn't delve into every possible method or property. instead the author selected the most practical aspects of the language to teach. It is not the last book on JavaScript you will ever need but it makes a good first book on the topic.

Amazon may have copies, but the publisher tells our bookstore its now out of print. I liked the book, and decided to adopt it for our Perl/CGI course because the book we had been using went out of print (CGI/Perl by Diane Zak). The campus bookstore informed me that the book was out of print. oh well.

Great Introduction To Using Perl And CGI.......2002-10-24

I really liked this Introductory Perl book. It covers a lot of
ground without assuming that the reader is a genius. This full
color book has many features I liked such as call outs (kind of
like arrow diagrams) on code sections, short code pieces
with a line-by-line descriptions and things like tip and warning boxes. It covers things from starting your first CGI script to trickier things like regular expressions and using files on the web Server. An excellent starting book for people wanting to
learn Perl or Perl scripting.

Just right for a beginner..........2002-03-15

If you have absolutely no experience with perl and cgi, you'll probably appreciate this book. Assumes no prior knowledge and presents information in manageable, non-intimidating fashion.
