Aimed at Windows Web developers of all levels, ASP.NET Unleashed provides a truly example-packed tutorial on beginning through advanced topics in ASP.NET programming. This mammoth text is never dense, and its clear sample code and ordering of topics will make it a strong choice for learning ASP.NET inside and out.
Dedicated to the principle that more is more, and weighing in at over 1,400 pages, this title covers all the bases in the new ASP.NET. Though it's comprehensive, the author takes care to present the basics of programming first. Early sections cover the basics of building Web pages with built-in ASP.NET Web controls. Only later on does the text range farther afield. Standout sections on mobile devices will let you work with today's wireless devices using both WAP and specialized HTML on the Pocket PC platform. Coverage on the extensive support for databases in ADO.NET and bound controls marks this book's practical focus on the basics. Material on tapping the powers of Microsoft SQL Server and the Indexing Service for providing full-text searches in Web sites is a notable standout here.
Later chapters look at basics of the much-advertised Web services, but also discuss ways to extend security and data sharing. Advanced bells and whistles are illustrated with a Web service to export pattern matching across Web sites--a worthwhile example. More advanced topics round out this book, including a tutorial on .NET APIs for common functions like the file system, strings, and regular expressions. A later section on combining ASP.NET with Microsoft Message Queue Server to provide asynchronous messaging will extend the range of your applications.
Final sections illustrate key concepts using a job site and an online store. And the last few pages in this 1,400-page tome are devoted to a handy reference for ASP.NET server-side controls, which is sure to be a useful feature.
Few titles combine so many useful examples, and the choice and ordering of material here makes this a book that will benefit two distinct audiences: those brand-new to ASP.NET and those who want to extend the basics with new capabilities using Web services and other high-end whistles and bells. There's a pleasing amount of white space in the text, which is dominated by dozens and dozens of clear examples rather than long-winded explanations, making this title ideal for those who like to learn new programming techniques through examples. --Richard Dragan

This is "IT" the book to learn ASP.NET web apps........2006-03-02
Over 1400 pages of pure web ASP.NET code, I say my friend, "this is the book that changed me." ASP.NET Unleashed teaches you how to implement the entire .NET v1.x Framework. This book contains the code in VB, but the CD has both C# and VB. I am a C# coder and I did not mind the VB examples one bit.
I came to this book barely able to write one line of C# code, but know I mastered DataGrid's, DataList's, Arrays (sorting and iterating), formatting (strings and dates), System.Text.RegularExpressions class (pattern matching and replace) and Client-Side Validation (Custom, Required Field, ), DataSets (GetXml, GetXmlSchema, WriteXml, ReadXml, ...), DataViews (sorting Asc and Desc), DataTables (insert, delete, Avg, Count, Max, StDev, Sum, define columns, add DataSets data, Var...), DataRelations, DataAdapter, DataReaders, XmlReaders, Creating Text and Binary Files, OleDbConnection, SqlConnection, Uploading Files, Session Variables, Caching objects, Xml Web Services, Compiling VB and C# into dll's, Symmetric Encryption and Asymmetric Encryption (SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, RC2, Rijndael, DES,...), Windows Authentication, Forms Authentication, Web.config (Roles, Authorization, deny users, Authentication, SQL Server connection string, ... ), Mobile Services, Performance Counters, Application Log, GDI+ Generating pictures on the fly (Brushes, Ellipses, Rectangles, Gradients, Save Jpeg or Gif, Drawing over saved pictures, Pies, Draw Lines, Round or SquareBorders, ...), Custom Postbacks with HtmlControls, AdRotators (binding with XML), ... There is plenty more objects and code, I didn't list. The book is no hype or not all talk and all the code is complete baby. Also all the code is on CD, so you do not have to type the code. The book's only flaw is that it does not show you how to bind data to objects (e.g DropDownList, Calendar, ...) inside of DataGrid's and DataList's using TemplateColumn(s), use custom JavaScript to validate, but the book only shows Microsoft's Control Validaters and the examples do not separate the VB and C# source file from the ASPX file, but by far this is "IT" the book to learn ASP.NET web apps. The book also does not show you how write Crystal Reports.
//The book does not show how to populate data into a DataGrid's object or use JavaScript triggers for validation, but here is my code snip
function Validate(name, num, tname){
var regInt=/^-[0-9]+$|^[0-9]+$/; //no decimals

The Oracle Data Provider for .NET driver (free) at "www . otn . oracle . com" can be used in the examples of the ASP.NET Unleashed book by replacing the SQL Server namespace "System.Data.SqlClient" with Oracle namespace "Oracle.DataAccess.Client" and replacing the Sql syntax with Oracle (e.g. SqlConnection becomes OracleConnection("User Id=schema_name;Password=schema_password;Data Source=oracle_sid_name"); ) The Oracle 10g Release 2 Database can be downloaded for free too "www . otn . oracle .com"
I also recommend learning Oracle PL/SQL Programming by Scott Urman ISBN 0-07-2191147-3. Also do not bother learning JSP, PHP, or Java Applets. Microsoft ASP.NET Framework is lighter, quicker, less code (for more action), more responsive, and is generations ahead of the pack.
One of my most valuable books.......2005-11-09
I'll keep this short and simple. This is what I call the "Bible" of ASP.NET books. I reference this quite a bit along with Internet articles on syntax and approaches.
PROS
- Code available for all examples in both VB and C#
- Author is very easy to understand, examples are great and to the point
- The book covers a ton and does it well
- The author provides explanations throughout explaining the transition from Classic ASP to ASP.NET
CONS
- Outdated, waiting for Third Edition for ASP 2.0 but still very useful if you're still coding in ASP.NET 1.1
- Author should have shown many examples referencing Stored Procedures which is what most people use...if you know what you're doing in application design
- No code behind? I'm sorry but this is just wrong...even if he's trying to show simple examples, it should all be done in code behind
- Lack of coverage on security...Check MSDN for that good stuff
Great ASP.NET Book.......2005-11-07
After reading some ASP.NET lists, here on Amazon, I decided to buy "ASP.NET Unleashed" to build up my web programming skills although I have access to some Microsoft Press books, especially the MCAD/MCSD training kits.
By far, this was the best book I have read about ASP.NET: it covers every topic I can think of, from simple web pages to security and building controls. ADO.NET, one of the most difficult topics for a beginner, is covered in great detail in more than 300 pages.
True, there are some problems for C# developers with the VB.NET-only code examples, but this book is really worth the 5 stars.

Engrossing and Sometimes Just Plain Gross!.......2002-03-15
This is a very interesting book. You'll be so entertained when reading this thing that you won't realize what else you're doing... learning history! Yep.. a lot of this book is about scandalous things of the past.
I would suggest this book to any and everyone (as long as they're over a certain age. Some of it might not be appropriate for younger kids, but I doubt they'd even WANT to read this book.)
Read about people who met their deaths while sitting on the toilet or having sex! Learn about how much fly feces is in your candy bar! Most of all, have FUN with this book. It's really thick, so it should keep you entertained for quite awhile.
Truth is stranger than fiction........1998-11-20
I love this book. I entertained myself and my sister-in-law by reading some of the lists aloud, especially the ones that pertain to death. This book is twisted humor at its very best.

Product Description
In the summer of 1927, nineteen bands gathered for a recording session in Bristol, on the Tennessee-Virginia border, including some of the most influential names in American musicthe Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers, Ernest Stoneman and more. Organized by Ralph Peer for Victor records to capitalize on the popularity of hillbilly music, the Bristol sessions were a key moment in country musics evolution. The musicians played a variety of styles largely endemic to the Appalachian region. Rather than attempting to record purely traditional sounds, however, Peer sought a combination of musical elements, an amalgam that would form the backbone of modern country music. The reverberations of the Bristol sessions are still felt today, yet their influence is widely misunderstood, and popular accounts of the event are more legend than history. These 19 essays offer an examination and reevaluation of the Bristol sessionsfrom their germination, to the actual sessions, to their place in history and their continuing influence. The first section discusses technological advances that resulted in the unmatched quality of the Bristol recordings. The second section chronicles the people and musical acts involved in the event. The third section gives first-hand accounts of the Bristol sessions, while the fourth presents musicological studies of two of the prominent acts. The final section details subsequent recording sessions in Bristol and nearby Johnson City, and explores the lasting local musical legacy.

Staying Within Limits........2006-09-11
The Birthplace of Country Music Was Not Nashville., September 10, 2006
Reviewer: Betty Burks (Knoxville, TN) - See all my reviews
In 1998, The U. S. Congress passed a resolution which declared Bristol, Tennessee, as making a "significant contribution to the development and commercial acceptance of country music." Actually, I had to learn from a fiction book written by Lee Smith that country music actually began in Bristol. It was a
revelation to me, even though Bristol is just north of my hometown, which is all bluegrass music. In my short amateur career as a singer here in my teens, I tried country only once, "Your Cheating Heart" on the Cas Walker t.v. show and was
not a hit. I did not look or sound like Dolly Parton. When I sang it at school dressed as a cowgirl holding my dad's guitar, the younger kids deemed me a star. I stayed with pop music on the local talent radio and t.v. shows and at teen time Saturday mornings at the Tennessee Theater, also broadcast over WROL.
Well, I did hear Tennessee Ernie Ford back in the Fifties and Dinah Shore, but this book informed me that he had been a deejay while a teenager at a Bristol radio station. Most gifted deejays start out on the air at an early age if they are blessed with a mature voice, and he was.
It was the 1927 Bristol sessions which started the world of country music. Now, how was I supposed to know that when I
wasn't alive back then? They were recording Appalachian ballads like the one about Frankie Silver. My favorite writer based most of her novels on these ballads, and I learned of the "Knoxville Girl" in her book, "If I Ever Return Again, Pretty Peggy-O." She also wrote one about Frankie Silver. My favorite ballad was She
Walks These Hills "In A Long Black Veil."
Jimmie Rodgers who sang about trains and railroads, not the Jimmie Rogers of pop music fame started in Bristol. As did many of the cross-over singers like Don Gibson (who was rude to me at the Fair where I fell hard for Lash LaRue), the Everly Brothers, Archie Campbell (Hee Haw fame) who hosted his own t.v. show in Knoxville, and the Carter family. Now, Dolly is the only star
we have left in this area. Blind Alfred Reed was a composer as well as fiddler, called the devil's instrument, and he performed at a clan meeting in Princeton for pay; he said, "they were better people then." You had to go to Bristol to record
hillbilly songs like Hank Williams' sad, sad tunes. Here in Knoxville, the black music of the 20s and 30s was recorded for a short time at one of the hotels. I did not know anything about that until a local historian mentioned it in passing in one of his weekly columns. East Tennessee is not a very progressive
place. We have no documented history until now. What I have learned about my hometown is from Jack Neely's books. This is
a well-documented account of an important contribution to society by a group of hillbilly performers from East Tennessee and Virginia.
Legends are hard to pin down!.......2005-07-27
You can tell if someone is a fan of "old time country music" if you say "Bristol Sessions" and a moment of awe and respect comes over them. (Give me my moment of hyperbole!). Everyone knows something about the session from an article here and a cd booklet there, but now we can find a number of authoratative articles in one volume. Each has something to offer, but what I found valuable was the insight given on the recording process of the day. The facts added to my enjoyment of the legend but did not take away my sense of "awe."
Anyone who has read Charles K. Wolfe's books or the books he has edited knows the high quality of scholarship found. This book is no exception. Highly recommended.

Book Description
In a collection of essays that are often personal, occasionally journalistic, and frequently meditative, Rob Campbell takes a look at the world from a different persepctive - through the reflective lens of the automobile in our car-obsessed culture.
Customer Reviews:
Moving, highly personal, enlightening.......2000-06-21
For the non-car obsessed a facinating, introspective journey. For those who's cars are a bodily extension, a must-read. The first chapter, 'Sun, Fun, Stay, Play' really captures all the searing pain of growing up in Bakersfield, inside and outside of your cruising car.
Thoroughly entertaining -- and intriguing!.......2000-06-15
As a reader who is obsessed with books, orchids, and technology -- it is not hard to imagine how one can be obsessed about cars. In fact, at a younger age I would have categorized myself as such, until I read this book. Now I know what it really means to be "obsessed!"
Campbell uses these essays to enlighten, tease, rant and mostly entertain. It is a thoroughly American journey that runs the spectrum from Angst to Zen. Highly recommended.
Unusual, intelligent, emotional.......2000-05-04
A lovely book that does a satisfying job of blurring the lines between memoir, journalism, and quirky meditation. Expresses the ineluctable emotion we all feel for our cars, past and present that we sometimes mistake for materialism.
I will never look at my car the same way again!.......2000-04-13
Writer Rob Campbell gives us a personal look at the important place in our lives that our cars occupy. Who doesn't think back to the car we drove in high school, what car our first boyfriend took us to the prom in, what car we bought after getting that first great job; we choose cars as an expression of ourselves as much as the clothes we choose or the foods we eat. The writer's examination of the connection between self and self-expression are fascinating, and all too true.
You've never read anything like this........2000-01-04
I am not a big reader, so the agent of this book told me to start with a brief section on page 134 (called "Breakdown #2). I was blown away. Campbell, the author, is HIV-positive, but totally enlightened and enlightening. He's hilarious, but also warm and honest and accepting. MUST READ for anyone HIV-pos or anyone who knows anyone HIV-pos.

Useful.......1999-10-19
This book is quite useful and I have found data in it I was looking for for a long time, especially in the deck plans. Still, it has some quite big faults. Biggest of all is the dates, the first Enterprise served 2221-2285, not some time around the turn of the century and the NCC-1701-A did not possess a Transwarp Drive like described in the book. But overall this book is very useful for its vast amount of details not seen anywhere else
Excellent.......1999-07-13
This book is the most in-depth resource available on the NCC-1701 and NCC-1701-A as they appeared in the first four Star Trek films. Its deck plans appear to match the actual sets very closely, and it refers to details of the starship model and mattes of sets such as the recreation deck in such a way that you can tell that Mr. Johnson has definitely done his homework. I recommend it to any fan of the film era or later. Many of the sets shown here would later be redressed to serve as rooms of the NCC-1701-D, the 1701-A in the fifth and sixth movies, and the USS Voyager from Star Trek: Voyager.
For years Trekkers have debated over which books are Trek "canon," and which aren't. Many fans do not consider this book to be canon. If you want to be anal about it, no Star Trek book is canon, not even the Sternbach/Okuda works, or the writer's guides or bibles themselves. Since the episodes and films contradict each other from time to time, one could argue that no single episode or film is canon when held up against the Star Trek universe as a whole.
Rick Sternbach and Michael Okuda have argued that each fan must decide what he or she believes to be canon. To me, this book is. Buy it.
This is a pretty cool book with lots of info........1999-01-15
Mr Scott's Guide to the Enterprise is a good book with lots of information. However, some of the information is speculation. Cool picts, it is a really popular book and I like it.
An Excellent Incite.......1998-07-04
My parents bought this book for me several years ago for Christmas. My knowledge of Star Trek has grown over the years, and after reading it again recently, I've noticed a few inaccuracies. However, this book gives the reader AN EXCELLENT INCITE and information into the movie version of the starship ENTERPRISE.

Not bad for newcommers to Maya7.......2006-03-02
When i received this book in the mail I was excited because Kelly did such a good job with 3D Studio Max Bible. On opening the box i noticed the book seemed cut in half, but it was complete, thinking OK let's see what's in it !.
Well it glosses over allot of topics but doesn't go into any detail on any. If you just want to find out what Maya 7 can do and where things are and how to get to them easily, this book will tell you how. There are allot of very simple tutorials to get you started on using Mayas' features, but none that will enspire you to go further.
Seems to me that Kelly realy knows his stuff when it comes to 3D Studio Max, but Maya is more of a "I suppose i will have to do a book on this one too." task.
Don't get me wrong, the book is good, but not to the level of the "3D Studio Max 7 Bible".
