5 out of 5 stars Base Formula was successful.......2006-07-02

I am 50 years old and until my accident I have never had a wreck. I bought this book on Amazon.com about a year ago and followed it religiously to settle my claim. It worked. Thought I'd share this with others.

Also, the book helped me see additional damages that I didn't recognize previously. Just that alone would have been worth the price of the book. But the author's Base Formula showed me how to figure out how much my claim was worth, and that saved me thousands. This is one book I won't be loaning out, just in case I have another wreck.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so grateful to have this book.......2005-12-26

I just finished reading this book which my mother got me for Christmas. I had an accident a few weeks ago and was beside myself with worry over it. I didn't get hurt badly but my neck and back hurt a lot the next morning. My car wasn't so fortunate, though.

I did lose time from work and had to rent a car. The worse part was not knowing what I had to do next. After reading this book it answered so many of the questions I had. There's no way I would have known about some of them since I never had an accident before.

The only thing I didn't see in the book, unless I missed it, is whether I should include my medical bills in the formula since they are going to be paid by the insurance company. The accident was the fault of the driver behind me.

I don't know how anybody can ever begin to try and settle their own claim without a book like this. There's SO many things you need to know.

Someone in a review below said that the book is only 50 pages. My book is 140 pages! And there's a ton of information in it that tells me exactly what I need to do. I'm so grateful for this book.

5 out of 5 stars Recommend book highly.......2005-12-24

My wife and I purchased this book some time ago as we prepared to settle our claim.

She had also bought a few others online and we spent quite a bit of time reading them all.

Each one had some helpful information, however, we both felt this book was the most concise and had everything we needed to know. I especially liked the fact that this particular author did not talk down to the readers, nor did he use the difficult to understand legal terms that some of the others did.

He took us step by step through the process, explaining what we needed to do at every turn.

Neither my wife or I had ever been through this wrenching process before. When we met with our adjuster we both felt a lot more confident thanks to this book.

I'm pleased to report that we just settled our claim for the amount we figured out with this book. It took some haggling, both on the phone and in person, but we held fast as the author said to do and we persevered.

For the benefit of others who find themselves like we did, struggling to learn the in's and out's of a claims process, I would recommend this book highly.

5 out of 5 stars Book was great help to me.......2005-12-09

Understanding how the injury-insurance-settlement process works has been central to making the right decision's in dealing with both our own insurance company, and the one who insured the person who hit my husband. The book was a great help to me.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book that works!.......2005-11-24

After my son and I had an accident I didn't have a clue where to begin, or what had to be done. I read this book, followed instructions, and feel I successfully negotiated the claim on my own.

I noticed an article below that complained about the cost of the book. I figure I saved about $2,500 by doing it myself. That's the 33% a lawyer would have taken to do what the book showed me how to do myself. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the $30.00 cost was a small price to spend to save $2,500. Anyone who can read and follow instructions will also be able to save a lot of money like I did. And I'm not always good at following instructions, but I did it!

        Book Description

This volume contains the papers presented in honor of the lifelong achievements of Thomas J. Rothenberg on the occasion of his retirement. The authors of the chapters include many of the leading econometricians of our day, and the chapters address topics of current research significance in econometric theory. The chapters cover four themes: identification and efficient estimation in econometrics, asymptotic approximations to the distributions of econometric estimators and tests, inference involving potentially nonstationary time series, such as processes that might have a unit autoregressive root, and nonparametric and semiparametric inference. Several of the chapters provide overviews and treatments of basic conceptual issues, while others advance our understanding of the properties of existing econometric procedures and/or propose new ones. Specific topics include identification in nonlinear models, inference with weak instruments, tests for nonstationary in time series and panel data, generalized empirical likelihood estimation, and the bootstrap.

          Description:
In many econometric models the asymptotic variance of a parameter estimate depends on the value of another structural parameter in such a way that the data contain little information about the former when the latter is close to a critical value. This paper introduces the zero-information-limit-condition (ZILC) to identify such models where 'weak identification' leads to spurious inference. We find that standard errors tend to be underestimated in these cases, but the size of the asymptotic t-test may either be too great (the intuitive case emphasized in the 'weak instrument' literature) or too small as in two cases illustrated here.

                  Book Description

From the creator of SatireWire.com, the hysterical, award-winning Web site that "unite(s) The Onion and the Wall Street Journal in a marriage of pure lunacy" (Fast Company) comes a sizzling spoof of the breathless business journalism America has grown to distrust.
Through his hugely popular Web site Andrew Marlatt has hilariously skewered America’s marketing moguls, double-talking executives, and the sharky venture capitalists who seemed so omnipotent in the 1990s and so out-to-lunch in the 2000s. Now, Economy of Errors showcases Marlatt’s on-the-mark parodies of nine years of corporate kookiness and the business journalists who put their spin on it. His collection contains laugh-out-loud funny editorials, news shorts, mock Q & As, and features such as:

5 out of 5 stars Can Americans be funny?.......2002-10-16

I have now read a bit about Mr. Marlatt from his Website, SatireWire.com, where I was most surprised to learn that despite his tremendous sense of humour, wonderful timing, and impressive knowledge of the world, he is, nonetheless, an American.

That Economy of Errors is written in "American" English should be a giveaway, and indeed most of the stories in this book make light of business in America. Yet he does not fail to include a wealth of nations in his stories, such as "Enron Admits It's Really Argentina," or "French Strike for Greater Productivity." And pieces such as the dream dates of CEOs, in which, among others, the chief executive of Merrill Lynch fantasizes about skinny-dipping with the head of Viacom, is absolutely Pythonesque.

But one of my favourite examples is a piece entitled "Suspicious America Wonders: Is World Putting U.S. Interests First?" in which President Bush accuses other nations taking a rather myopic economic worldview instead of stepping back and looking at the broader American economic view. The story goes on to note:

"If this troubling trend continues, Bush warned, the United States will be forced to 'take its ball and go home.' Asked exactly what ball he was referring to, Bush replied: 'It's big and blue and we all live on it.'"

Who knew Americans could be so funny? Perhaps he was adopted. Whatever the truth, I couldn't recommend a book more highly.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious and sharp witted.......2002-09-23

My father always used to tell me, "You're too young to be this sarcastic." Well, nobody is old enough to be as sarcastic as Mr. Marlatt. He does an excellent job of poking fun at the business headlines and at corporate life without the doom and gloom that so many others resort to.

5 out of 5 stars LOL - A book that leaves no stone unskewered.......2002-09-17

I haven't hand-counted, but just glancing through Economy of Errors, I see that Marlatt has managed to make fun of: Big business, small business, high-tech people, low-tech people, parents, children, men, women, Ralph Nader, Bill Gates, cows, classical music, rap music, golf, drugs, chickens, Americans, Europeans, Australians, South Americans, Asians, Middle Easterners, cubists, Princess Diana, and the King of Belgium.

He doesn't do this in one story. It takes a couple hundred pages, and several hundred stories, to get his points across. But the bottom line is, if you have a passing knowledge of business, and anything resembling a sense of humor, this book is a winner.

5 out of 5 stars A great gift (no, seriously).......2002-09-17

Economy of Errors has broken a losing streak for me, and for that reason alone, I highly recommend it. You know how when you give a book to a friend as a present, then you talk to that friend half a year later ask if they liked it, and they have no idea what you're talking about? I had that happen with the last several books I'd given out, but not Economy of Errors. Three times now I've given Marlatt's book as a gift, and three times the recipient has not only read it, but thanked me for it.

The most surprisingly funny feature is/are the images. The book has these great (i.e. funny) charts, but I also loved the captions for the pictures that went with the stories. Speaking of stories, the one where Enron tries to convince everyone it is the nation of Argentina and therefore immune from U.S. laws is classically funny, as is pretty much the whole book.

5 out of 5 stars The long, dark tea-time of the economy.......2002-09-04

"Hilarious intellectual humor" is supposed to be an oxymoron, isn't it? But Marlatt somehow pulls it off. I'm sure there will be many books written about the economy of the last 10 years or so, but this will by far be the best remembered because the incredibly dark humor makes it timeless. This is one crazy, whacked-out writer.

5 out of 5 stars best overview of the century.......2001-05-12

Morgan's book is the best that I have found for an overview of the entire 20th century in "classical" music. He divides his analysis into 3 logical sections:

Part 1. Beyond Tonality: From 1900 to World War I

Part 2. Reconstruction and New Systems: Between the Wars

Part 3. Innovation and Fragmentation: From WWII to the Present

This allows for some nuance that a simple list of composers often misses. For instance, Schoenberg's "atonal revolution" is covered in Part 1, along with the "new tonalities" of Stravinsky and Bartok. Part 2 covers the origin of the "twelve-tone system," but makes clear that it did not become influential until years later with the "serial revolution" in France, led by Messiaen and Boulez, in Part 3.

As others have noted, Morgan is not as strong on the more recent period, partly because the book was published in 1991 and thus misses such phenomena as Schnittke's surge of popularity, especially in Russia and Europe, after the collapse of the Soviet regime. I recommend two other books along with Morgan: 1) Gann's "American Music in the Twentieth-Century," which covers developments in the U.S. in greater detail, thus including for instance one of my favorites, Roger Reynolds, and 2) Griffiths' masterful "Modern Music and After," which begins after the Second World War.

3 out of 5 stars Not Completely Comprehensive.......1999-12-12

This is a very good book, but it only covers the first three-quarters of the century. Minimalism is the latest movement that it really covers comprehensively. After that, most composers recieve only two or three lines of text. This is, of course, understandable, given when the book was written. Just be warned that more recent developments in music are often ignored or not given the attention they deserve. Also, it should be noted that the book generally restricts itself to "classical" music. Jazz and Free Improvisation, despite being arguably the most vital and truly revolutionary forces in music of the first 2/3 and last 1/3 of the century, respectively, are mentioned only in passing if at all.

5 out of 5 stars The History of Modern Music for The Layman.......1997-03-15

As we end the 20th century, we may not realize that 20th century music covers the same time span as the 19th century Romantic music period. Have we grasped the meaning of modern music. To do this one needs to understand the history as well as the dynamics of 20th century music. Here is a book that fills the bill. Not only does Mr. Morgan discuss the growth and change in 20th century music but he does it in it's historical context of our maturing as a world. For many the atonality of 20th century music is hard to grasp, especially when concert artists and orchestras continue to emphasize in their repatoire 19th century music. But as the world changes so will music. A book to awaken your interest in 20th century music and the composers who were the leaders of this period.

An Introduction to America's Music tells the fascinating story of music in the United States, from the sacred music of its earliest days to the jazz and rock that enliven the turn of the millennium. Beginning with the music of Native Americans and continuing with traditions introduced by European colonizers and Africans brought here as slaves, the book reveals how this bountiful heritage was developed and enhanced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries to produce the music we hear today.

                      Book Description

This refreshingly current music appreciation text provides a scholarly examination of popular music's roots and history. The organization and the context of the survey reflect its introductory intent and aids the student in gaining an increased awareness of the heritage of popular music: to appreciate its diversity; to perceive the underlying kinship of its many styles; to sense its evolutionary momentum.

4 out of 5 stars Good text on American Pop Music.......2004-12-05

I find this textbook to be very good, especially compared to those in its field.

Starting with a brief introduction, the textbook covers the basics of musical sound (beat, timbre, dynamics) and then touches on the elements and sources of popular music. The book then begins historically with minstrel songs ("Oh Susanna" and the like), Ragtime, the Blues, Jazz, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Latin Music, and finally Rock and Jazz Fusion (with a little bit of disco and punk).

What's great about this textbook is that even it is accessible for undergraduate college students and even high schoolers, the material is presented in a scholarly fashion. I've not always found that to be the case when it comes to writings about rock music. You can find a lot of fluff out there.

The textbook also has a companion 5-CD set purchased separately. I feel it is extremely helpful, and the book refers to the recordings ALL THE TIME. It's really necessary. There are some songs referred to where Campbell was unable to get the copyright permission, but he has a Discography list at the back of the book for those interested.

This book gets four stars mainly because it's so light on rock after the sixties. The eighties has very little material, and there is only one hip-hop example (Public Enemy). The book really needs a new edition.

Don't use this book for a course on rock alone, but it works great as a text on popular music.

                      5 out of 5 stars I've met Dr. Campbell.......2003-02-02

and took his class. I'm pretty sure he even knows me by name. I bought the book, but never read it. I've yet to return the book, so someday in the future, i may read it. But if that book is one tenth as good as his lectures and computer notes were, then i give it my full endoresement.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining, and informative........1999-09-27

I am a college instructor and have decided to use this book in my History of Popular Music class. I found this book to be very thorough and concise and stays focused on relevant material. I also appreciate the use of historical context when describing a period of music. This book is fun, entertaining, and very informative as it relays the development of our pop music. A must read for music lovers--even if you are not in school!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the evolution of music in America.......1999-09-03

The Beat Goes On provides an excellent view of how we got from "Oh, Susanna" to "My Sharonna".The only problems are caused by trying to cover so much material in one book. Anyone who wants to learn why what we listen to sounds they way it does should get this book. Hihgly recommended.

The author examines the repertoire, authenticity and instruction of American Indian music in elementary school music programs and includes an analysis of the music in selected music series and supplemental resources. The analysis calls into question the authenticity of American Indian music presented in the textbook series, in which stereotypes and pseudo-Indian songs continue to appear. The study provides new information regarding the instruction of American Indian music in Oklahoma, and shows the affect of demographic variables of teachers and students on pedagogical content and practice.

                                      Book Description

"Ralph Engelman's history of the growth of public radio and television in America is timely, compelling, and instructive. Very useful for citizens who take seriously the need for public use of the public airwaves, which we need to remember, the people own but do not control." --Ralph Nader, Director, The Center for the Study of Responsive Law "There is no cynicism or stridency in Ralph Engelman's definitive history of public broadcasting's failure to fulfill its promise, only documentation of the immense problems endemic to government and corporate sponsored mass media. For models of hope, this volume acknowledges the civic discourse that has thrived in the margins of public broadcasting--in the independent community and in the homespun programming of the public access movement." --Dee Dee Halleck, Cofounder, Paper Tiger Television & Deep Dish TV "Public Radio and Television in America by Ralph Engelman effectively navigates the complex, controversial, and often maddening history of public broadcasting as a political and cultural force. Always more important than its audience size in America, public broadcasting's promise and problems, as well as its heroes and villains, are treated effectively and well in this solid and critical analysis. The book is compact, yet sufficiently substantive and blessedly well written and well documented." --Everette E. Dennis, Executive Director, Freedom Forum Media Studies Center, editor, Media Studies Journal "Ralph Engelman's Public Radio and Television in America is a chilling description of how noncommercial broadcasting is the tragic victim of conservative corporate politics that have spent most of this century trying to cripple and kill it." --Ben H. Bagdikian, former Dean, Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California,

                                      Book Description

The late Seventies to the early Nineties was a completely unique period in the history of computing. Long before Microsoft and Intel ruled the PC world, a disparate variety of home computers, from an unlikely array of suppliers, were engaging in a battle that would shape the industry for years to come.

Products from established electronics giants clashed with machines which often appeared to have been (or actually were) assembled in a backyard shed by an eccentric inventor. University professors were competing head to head with students in their parents' garages.

Compatibility? Forget it! Each of these computers was its own machine and had no intention of talking to anything else. The same could be said of their owners, in fact, who passionately defended their machines with a belief that verged on the religious.

This book tells the story behind 40 classic home computers of an infamous decade, from the dreams and inspiration, through passionate inventors and corporate power struggles, to their final inevitable demise. It takes a detailed look at every important computer from the start of the home computer revolution with the MITS Altair, to the NeXT cube, pehaps the last serious challenger in the personal computer marketplace. In the thirteen years between the launch of those systems, there has never been a more frenetic period of technical advance, refinement, and marketing, and this book covers all the important steps made on both sides of the Atlantic. Whether it's the miniaturization of the Sinclair machines, the gaming prowess of the Amiga, or the fermenting war between Apple Computer, "Big Blue," and "the cloners," we've got it covered. Digital Retro is an essential read for anyone who owned a home computer in the Eighties.

For a microcomputer collector this a a great reference book that you just have to read from cover to cover. Great colour photos compliment the text. Covers most of the landmark machines of the home computer boom of the early 80's. If anything I'd love to see more pages so that more machines get covered.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for the curious or nostalgic.......2007-05-08

Some people are quick to point out some of the facts & tidbits this book may hove not fully verified but if you simply want a good short read about a certain infamous computer and want lush high quality, full page pictures of that computer, this is the book for you. I especially like the fact that the more important computers (ex: Commodore 64) get extended attention in the form of 4 or 5 pages with even more photos, but generally speaking, most computers are a 2 page layout, photo on the right, history on the right.

It's a very light read, the perfect coffee table book for the nerd in you.

A perfect coffee table book. People always thumb through this book before any others on the coffee table.

It's such an interesting book. I thought I knew a lot about old personal computers, but there are so many flops that I missed. It's truly interesting and a beautifully photographed book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Reference of Personal Computers.......2007-01-18

This book shows the history of personal computers, from the early build-it-yourself Altair kits, through 8-bit systems like the Commodore VIC-20 and 64 and even later systems. It displays some computer systems most of us have never heard of, along with great pictures of attachments, device ports and the systems themselves.

If you have any interest in the history of personal computing, this is a great reference.

4 out of 5 stars Great photos, but beware of the errors.........2006-09-18

There are a lot of great photos of many early personal computers. Also included are some specs and history on each machine.

I was not sure why they were including Nintendo and other console game machines in a book about "The Evolution and Design of the Personal Computer" though..

On pages 11 and 13 the author repeatedly refers to "Practical Electronics" instead of the correct "Popular Mechanics" as the magazine that introduced the ALTAIR on its cover in 1975. They even italisize the error in each instance, d'oh. :)

I still enjoyed the book though.
