Picture a magical, sugar-fueled road trip with Willy Wonka behind the wheel and David Sedaris riding shotgun, complete with chocolate-stained roadmaps and the colorful confetti of spent candy wrappers flying in your cocoa powder dust. If you can imagine such a manic journey--better yet, if you can imagine being a hungry hitchhiker who's swept through America's forgotten candy meccas: Philadelphia (Peanut Chews), Sioux City (Twin Bing), Nashville (Goo Goo Cluster), Boise (Idaho Spud) and beyond--then Candyfreak: A Journey through the Chocolate Underbelly of America, Steve Almond's impossible-to-put down portrait of regional candy makers and the author's own obsession with all-things sweet, would be your Fodor's guide to this gonzo tour.

With the aptly named Almond (don't even think of bringing up the Almond Joy bit--coconut is Almond's kryptonite), obsession is putting it mildly. Almond loves candy like no other man in America. To wit: the author has "three to seven pounds" of candy in his house at all times. And then there's the Kit Kat Darks incident; Almond has a case of the short-lived confection squirreled away in an undisclosed warehouse. "I had decided to write about candy because I assumed it would be fun and frivolous and distracting," confesses Almond. "It would allow me to reconnect to the single, untarnished pleasure of my childhood. But, of course, there are no untarnished pleasures. That is only something the admen of our time would like us to believe." Almond's bittersweet nostalgia is balanced by a fiercely independent spirit--the same underdog quality on display by the small candy makers whose entire existence (and livelihood) is forever shadowed by the Big Three: Hershey's, Mars, and Nestle.

Almond possesses an original, heartfelt, passionate voice; a writer brave enough to express sheer joy. Early on his tour he becomes entranced with that candy factory staple, the "enrober"--imagine an industrial-size version of the glaze waterfall on the production line at your local Krispy Kreme, but oozing chocolate--dubbing it "the money shot of candy production." And while he writes about candy with the sensibilities of a serious food critic (complimenting his beloved Kit Kat Dark for its "dignified sheen," "puddinglike creaminess," "coffee overtones," and "slightly cloying wafer") words like "nutmeats" and "rack fees" send him into an adolescent twitter.

...the Marathon Bar, which stormed the racks in 1974, enjoyed a meteoric rise, died young, and left a beautiful corpse. The Marathon: a rope of caramel covered in chocolate, not even a solid piece that is, half air holes, an obvious rip-off to anyone who has mastered the basic Piagetian stages, but we couldn't resist the gimmick. And then, as if we weren't bamboozled enough, there was the sleek red package, which included a ruler on the back and thereby affirmed the First Rule of Male Adolescence: If you give a teenage boy a candy bar with a ruler on the back of the package, he will measure his dick

Candyfreak is one of those endearing, quirky titles that defy swift categorization. One of those rare books that you'll want to tear right through, one you won't soon stop talking about. And eager readers beware: It's impossible to flip through ten pages of this sweet little book without reaching for a piece of chocolate. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Book Description

A self-professed candyfreak, Steve Almond set out in search of a much-loved candy from his childhood and found himself on a tour of the small candy companies that are persevering in a marketplace where big corporations dominate.

From the Twin Bing to the Idaho Spud, the Valomilk to the Abba-Zaba, and discontinued bars such as the Caravelle, Marathon, and Choco-Lite, Almond uncovers a trove of singular candy bars made by unsung heroes working in old-fashioned factories to produce something they love. And in true candyfreak fashion, Almond lusciously describes the rich tastes that he has loved since childhood and continues to crave today. Steve Almond has written a comic but ultimately bittersweet story of how he grew up on candy-and how, for better and worse, the candy industry has grown up, too.

Candyfreak is the delicious story of one man's lifelong obsession with candy and his quest to discover its origins in America.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-08-06

Plot: Candy lover tours several candy factories

Pros: Funny, well-written, interesting, mouth-watering

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: One of the most satisfying books I have ever read. I laughed out loud a few times. I want to try several of the candy bars he mentions that I've never heard of.

Grade: A+

2 out of 5 stars Hypocrite.......2007-07-21

First, the bad stuff. The guy just rails the G.W. Bush administration. He pontificates against big business. He has diatribes against the whole cocoa industry. He decries the monstrous evil of the big three candy bar companies: Nestle, Mars, and Hershey. However, he explains that he is a candy freak and he can't help himself from buying their product. He writes about his moral quagmire several times. His friends even listed some politically correct candy bars and he still can't help himself. He is a self-absorbed, little twit. It wore on me.

The good things about the book are the guy can write and he is funny. However, the book goes on way too long. He goes to all these independent candy bar companies. It was interesting, but he also wrote about himself, which was a very boring topic. Both topics, candy bars and the author, are both inconsequential. Who really cares about the history of either subject? The people he meets were interesting. Some of the stories he tells were good. His political diatribes since he didn't even vote in the mid-term election were a little hard to take. He can't even give up any candy bar that he likes as a symbolic gesture. C. S. Lewis wrote about "Men without Chests." Almond would be a prime example.

5 out of 5 stars Get me a candybar, stat!.......2007-07-01

This book was amazing and made me salivate regularly. I wanted candy more than I have wanted candy in a very long time. Almond writes about the evolution of candy bars and tours a number of candy bar factories. He does not tour any of the big three, however, because they are too secretive and denied him access. The book is basically a nostalgic look at the candy bar industry and shows that, just like in every other American industry, the little guys are being pushed out by the big guys.

One thing I learned is that candy companies have to pay grocery stores a "stocking fee" to put their candies in the register line. The fee is $20,000 or more (I don't know how often this is paid though). This should explain why we only see Hershey's and Mars products at the front of the store. No independent candy companies can afford such a large amount of money.

The book itself is amazingly well written. The author is hilarious and the book never gets too dry even when he's feeding us statistics instead of candy descriptions. I recommend it for a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars UMM, pot and a candy bar .......2007-06-28

This book caused us to take a trip to our local Cracker Barrel to buy as much of the candy mentioned in the book as possible. We had Cherry Mash, Mallow Cups, ValoMilk, and SkyBar all piled into small brown paper sacks. We munched on the chocolate covered goodies as we set on the porch of the Cracker Barrel playing checkers. By far, my favorite are the ValoMilk cups. They are two slightly dark chocolate cups, perfectly ratio-ed with the vanilla flavored filling. I also enjoyed the SkyBar that offered a different filling in each piece. Every time the author toured another factory I was craving the candy that he discussed. I thought it was a great idea to have a candy bar party where you get to try all sorts of old-time candy, but I would leave out the pot. They just don't seem to go together very well.

      Book Description

Volume 1: Econometric General Equilibrium Modeling presents an econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling of the impact of economic policies. Earlier approaches were based on the "calibration" of general equilibrium models to a single data point. The obvious disadvantage of calibration is that it requires highly restrictive assumptions about technology and preferences, such as fixed input-output coefficients. These assumptions are contradicted by the massive evidence of energy conservation in response to higher world energy prices, beginning in 1973. The econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling successfully freed economic policy analysis from the straitjacket imposed by calibration.

As a consequence of changes in energy prices and new environmental policies, a wealth of historical experience has accumulated over the past two decades. Interpreted within the framework of the neoclassical theory of economic growth, this experience provides essential guidelines for future policy formation. Volume 2: Energy, the Environment, and Economic Growth presents a new econometric general equilibrium model of the United States that captures the dynamic mechanisms underlying growth trends and responses to energy and environmental policies. Jorgenson uses the model to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on US economic growth and tax policies for controlling US emissions of carbon dioxide.

          Book Description

b /b b i Intepreting Macroeconomics /i /b explores the different ways in which the history of macroeconomic thought can be written. This valuable text includes three historiographical chapters which critique both relativism and constructivism, and argues instead for an eclectic, pluralistic approach to macroeconomic thought. The remaining chapters demonstrate the advantages of this approach. br br b /b b i Interpreting Macroeconomics /i /b analyzes the ideas of pre-Keynesian economists informed by the perspective of modern theory. The story of macroeconomics since Keynes is told in three ways: a history innocent of methodology; a methodological appraisal of Keynesian economics; and a Lakatosian rational reconstruction in which monetarism and Keynesianism are viewed as part of the same research program. Rhetorical analysis is applied to the work of Milton Friedman, John Muth and Axel Leijonhufvud, demonstrating that these very different perspectives all have something to contribute--that the history of economic thought has many dimensions and that different methods are needed to uncover them.

2 out of 5 stars One can't understand Keynes if you can't follow his GT model.......2005-09-14

Backhouse has some interesting chapters in this book comparing and commenting on the works of Muth(the founder of the rational expectations approach based on the use of the normal probability distribution and related distributions),Leijonhufvud(one of the founders of the long run disequilibrium, neoWalrasian interpretation of Keynes),and Milton Friedman(monetarist economist whose empirical work is all based on the unsupported belief that the normal probability distribution(and its variates) can be applied universally as a correct model in macroeconomics).Backhouse is simply ignorant about the massive amount of data analysis done by Benoit Mandelbrot over the last fifty years demonstrating that the normal distribution is the wrong distribution to employ. His work has been replicated by many different researchers in many different countries.Keynes,in the 1939-40 exchange with Tinbergen over the logical foundations of econometrics, made the same, general theoretical argument as Mandelbrot, but without empirical support.Keynes argued that before the assumption of normality was made,Tinbergen needed to demonstrate the uniformity, homogeneity, and stability of the time series data before using the multiple correlation-regression approach.Keynes was ignored. The result has been 65 years of failed macroeconometric forecasts.Backhouse covers none of this.On pp.120-123,Backhouse repeats the standard economist claim that Keynes had no formal model in the GT.The formal model is in chapters 10,20,and 21.It is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p is the real wage, mpl is the marginal product of labor derived from a neoclassical aggregate production function, mpc is the marginal propensity to consume, and mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods. Keynes compares his formal model to Pigou's 1933 model in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT(General Theory,1936).Only if mpc+mpi=1 does the Pigouvian result occur.Backhouse simply repeats the false claims of those, such as Leontief, who claim that Keynes was guilty of"implicit theorizing".Backhouse claims that Keynes's theory was not derived from microeconomic foundations. All the microeconomic foundations, expressed in the form of elasticity analysis,is present in chapters 10,20,and 21.Finally,Backhouse claims that it was Lucas who was the first to construct macroeconomic models on a microeconomic foundation of optimizing behavior by economic agents. This claim is false since both Pigou,in his 1933 book,The Theory of Unemployment, based all of his macro results contained in Part II of his book on optimizing behavior.Keynes did the same.Backhouse is simply ignorant of the mathematical modeling done by both Keynes and Pigou in the early to mid 1930's.Whatever interpretations Backhouse makes are ,unfortunately, based on a lack of understanding of what Pigou and Keynes were doing in their books.

          5 out of 5 stars 34 easy-but-fun duets - 4 hands 1 piano.......2001-08-01

These pieces are mostly quite easy to play, and so are suited to beginners, beginners at dueting, or people who just want some fun things to play with a friend that won't need too much work to get going.

The pieces are quite short, only a couple are longer than a page, and cover a big range of styles - themes from classics, folk songs and jazz. Also, Agay has made the bars line up for the Primo and Secondo parts (doesn't seem like much until you play a duet without that and have to write the bar numbers on each part).

Tunes include: Oh Come All Ye Faithful, The Harmonious Blacksmith, All The Pretty Little Horses, The Trout, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Fasination, and themes from classics and operas.

As Sydney prepares to host the 2000 Olympic games, this study assesses the cultural impact of sport on the Australasian countries. Here, as in other parts of the world, sport is taken as an assertion of both individual and group identity, a demonstration of modernity and a source of personal, local and regional esteem. This collection explores the political, social and aesthetic influence of modern sport, attitudes to the body and the evolution of specific Australasian visions of sport.

Digital Cinematography is a novice's guide to the art of filmmaking. Author Ben de Leeuw teaches you how to apply the techniques of traditional cinematography to the digital world. He provides an introduction to lighting tools and to cameras and various types of lenses, and then delves into explaining how to work with interior and exterior lighting, characters, motion, and color. There are a few suggested exercises, such as changing the height of the camera, animating lights, combining soft light and hard light, and working with subtle and dramatic colors. The author also includes definitions of filmmaking jargon. The book isn't platform- or software-specific. A hybrid CD-ROM includes sample digital animation video sequences used in the book.

                    Book Description

Digital Cinematography presents computer animators with the tools and techniques at their disposal to give their animation the look and feel of a real Hollywood movie. Starting with the basics of lighting, camera movement, and genre, the book teaches how to effectively create interior and exterior lighting, how to light characters to invoke a mood or theme, and even how to create special effects. For animators who would like to create 3D computer games, this book illustrates how to light scenes effectively as well as how to cover up modeling and texturing mistakes. This book is an invaluable guide to the cinematic art of computer animation.

                    1 out of 5 stars Avoid........2000-09-27

I've recently evaluated several better books on this topic, and this one didn't make it into my spring term reading list. The book did little beyond skimming the basics of what can be found in any cinematography textbook, and had nothing new to say about 3D rendering or graphics production. Even the author's own sample images were crude and poorly lit.

For a much better choice, consider getting "Digital Lighting & Rendering" by Jeremy Birn. Birn's new book is an amazing resource for any 3D artist, and I reviewed it on amazon with 5 stars.

Alternately, you might just pick up a first-rate book on lighting for cinematography, such as "The Technique of Lighting for Television and Film" by Gerald Millerson or "Matters of Light & Depth" by Ross Lowell (although these cimematography books don't cover any techniques that are unique to digital graphics production.)

2 out of 5 stars Promising Title, Very Disappointing Book.......1998-08-01

"Digital Cinematography" is a hot-sounding, promising title. It's a shame that title was wasted on this book.

We are all eager to see a good book on cinematic lighting and texturing techniques, so buying this failed attempt was a great disappointment. Crude, childish 3D renderings were shown, with no subtlety of lighting, certainly no evidence of "cinematic" techniques. The cheap black-and-white printing of the author's own beginner-level 3D work, and vague writing that seemed to do little more than rehash highlights from an old cinematography textbook, do not deliver a book that lives up to its description.

The author doesn't seem to have a lot of artistic talent, or professional graphics production experience, and these deficits show in his writing and illustrations.

Despite being the first product cranked out last year that promised to explain cinematic graphics techniques, the book itself is a cheap, incomplete, and uninformative attempt! . The author may be making money because of the title, but when you open the book, he doesn't seem to have much to say.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe not the best, but has some basics..........1998-02-09

After finishing the book, I have to downgrade my rating. Like others, I agree the title is promising, but the content is not "top." And I also agree with two other readers about the fact that all those basics can be found in any good cinematography book. As for the digital part, now we have other books that deal with the subject better (see Digital Lighting, J. Birn).

5 out of 5 stars useful for all users of 3D graphics program.......1998-01-27

This is a highly practical book outlining the use of lights in 3D graphics software. The ideas and applications are independent of any particular package. The explanations are lucid, and the ideas can be put to immediate use. The black-and-white illustrations are poorly reproduced, so the real appreciation comes from applying the techniques to your own images.

                    Book Description

Albert J. Luxford has long been known as "The Gimmick Man" in the film and television industry, but he has remained one of its unsung and unknown geniuses despite his well-known work. He equipped James Bond with some of his most memorable gadgets; made possible many of the effects and sequences in the Carry On series. He worked on such shows and movies as Are You Being Served?, The Muppets, Highlander, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, among many others. In this memoir, Luxford reminisces with great good humor about his life and work and shares some tricks of the trade. He left school at 16 to attend the Institute of Automobile Engineers in West London and began in the film industry as an engineer at Pinewood Studios. The bulk of this work is made up of Luxford's recollections about his experiences in special effects. This is a genuine tour behind the scenes by an incomparable master of movie magic.

                    4 out of 5 stars A fascinating read.......2003-09-02

This is a terrific litle book about a much under-celebrated British special effects technician. Anyone interested in the history of special effects or the wider British film industry in general would learn much from this book. It would be of particular interest to Bond fans as Luxford was responsible for many of the famous gadgets seen in the earlier films.

A very enjoyable read with some rare insights.

Painting With Light was the first book on cinematography written by a major Hollywood cameraman. Published in 1949 and now put back into print, it is one of the best and most unusual books in the field. Written with good humor and full of helpful diagrams and photographs, it is certainly the most entertaining. Its technological discussions are dated, but Painting With Light remains relevant because its primary focus is on light itself and the many complex ways the camera crew can manipulate it. This new edition contains a biographical introduction by Todd McCarthy, who describes how the man who shot the strikingly colorful ballet sequence in An American in Paris also helped define the stark, haunting style of the film noir.

                    Book Description

Few cinematographers have had as decisive an impact on the cinematic medium as John Alton. Best known for his highly stylized film noir classics T-Men, He Walked by Night, and The Big Combo, Alton earned a reputation during the 1940s and 1950s as one of Hollywood's consummate craftsmen through his visual signature of crisp shadows and sculpted beams of light. No less renowned for his virtuoso color cinematography and deft appropriation of widescreen and Technicolor, he earned an Academy Award in 1951 for his work on the musical An American in Paris. First published in 1949, and long out of print since then, Painting With Light remains one of the few truly canonical statements on the art of motion picture photography, an unrivalled historical document on the workings of the postwar, American cinema. In simple, non-technical language, Alton explains the job of the cinematographer and explores how lighting, camera techniques, and choice of locations determine the visual mood of film. Todd McCarthy's introduction, written especially for this edition, provides an overview of Alton's biography and career and explores the influence of his work on contemporary cinematography.

Even though the subject of the book deals with B&W lighting effects for film and TV, as an artist, it helped me in creating paintings with better "moods" and making them more dynamic.

3 out of 5 stars The Film Noir Lighting Bible.......2007-01-04

[Note: I'd give this 3 and a half stars if the system would let me] Alton's book is indeed pioneering and along with The 5 C's of Cinematography make up the seminal volumes on cinematography that film makers used for almost 3 decades. Alton's writing style is very formal and at times can be almost condescending; at times he seems to imply that his way is the only "right" way to light something. However, for the genre and period he was lighting for I think it is appropriate. He pretty much invented film noir lighting and in this book he reveals just about every technique to do so yourself. I liked the many photos and stills from real movies, and he does have a chapter on the grip and lighting fixtures available in those days. Ironically many of those fixtures are still staples in any hollywood soundstage, so things aren't outdated in that sense.
Another interesting section is his analysis of natural light and the qualities of the various times of day and how to emulate them on a set.

                    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-03-05

Okay, lets put this review in perspective. This book will teach you hardly anything about anything technical because it is so outdated. It is also mainly about studio lighting on big productions, so it doesnt have much practical information for extremely low budget film makers. But having said that, this book is the best book there is on basic cinematography and lighting. Although the book is outdated technically, Alton's technique can never be outdated, the basic fundamentals of incredible artistic lighting. This book is especially helpful to black and white cinematographers and still photographers. I recommend reading this book after you watch some of his films so you can see his technique in action. Amazing book that you will keep forever in your collection.

While it's unlikely you'll use every suggestion in the book, there's bound to be a couple of tips that will make life with Word a little less frustrating, and that is worth the purchase price, in my opinion.
