            Book Description

Resource Allocation Mechanisms derives the general welfare properties of systems in which individuals are motivated by self-interest. Satisfactory outcomes will emerge only if individual incentives are harnessed by means of a communication and payoff process, or mechanism, involving every agent. Professor Campbell employs a formal and abstract model of a mechanism that brings into prominence the criteria by which the performance of an economy is to be judged. The mechanism approach is used to prove some fundamental theorems about the possibility of designing an economic system satisfying the criteria. It also establishes a way of thinking about economic issues that is becoming increasingly useful in special branches of economics, such as industrial organization and public finance. This book can be viewed as two different texts: one constitutes an introduction to the theory of mechanism design and the other is a treatment of welfare economics with conventional emphasis on Pareto optimality as well as providing substantial material on incentives, uncertainty, and existence of equilibrium.

            Book Description

In this book Bernard Salanié studies situations where competitive markets fail to achieve a collective optimum and the interventions used to remedy these so-called market failures. He includes discussions of theories of collective decision making, as well as elementary models of public economics and industrial organization. Although public economics is traditionally defined as the positive and normative study of government action over the economy, Salanié confines himself to microeconomic aspects of welfare economics; he considers taxation and the effects of public spending only as potential remedies for market failures. He concludes with a discussion of the theory of general equilibrium in incomplete markets.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent complement and starting point.......2002-02-16

In this extremely elegant and condensed work, Salanie once again provides a great externality to his readers (continuing after "The Economics of Contracts"): at the end it leaves a unequivocal desire to dive deeper in the subject.

Limitations? As mentioned in the introduction, the book is extracted from a series of lectures the author gave; lets say, they are great lectures but without the session of Q&A (questions and answers). Therefore, there is little communication with the reader's questions, the reader is required to investigate more in his/her own, e.g. no end of chapter problems or things like those.

In short, I will strongly recommended it along with the traditional material of a General Equilibrium course (e.g. Mas-Colell et.al.). But do not expect a treatise, it is more a general overview.

                Book Description

In this book the reader is provided with an overview of the most interesting ideas in Competitive General Equilibrium Theory as well as Welfare Economy. In doing so, the author adopts a methodological approach of a closed and inter-related system where all variables are simultaneously determined. By using theorems of fixed point, revealed preference and local and global stability, the author proves the existence of unicity and stability. Furthermore, he analyses those situations where the competitive system does not allocate resources efficiently. In this sense, he examines allocation problems in regard to property rights, information problems and choice and negotiation problems. Finally, the text includes a chapter that presents a topical guide of questions related to Social Choice.

                  Description:
This paper studies the welfare implications of a PAYG pension system in an overlapping generations (OLG) model with demographic uncertainty and incomplete markets. In the absence of public pensions, small cohorts tend to be favoured by the changes in relative prices implied by demographic shocks. PAYG defined-benefit systems can help to share the financial risks created by this type of demographic uncertainty across generations. Our careful quantitative analysis test this possibility with unfavourable results: the overall welfare impact of the public pensions is negative, due to the prominence of the crowding-out effect over the insurance effect.

From the author: This paper implements numerically a general equilibrium model in which all private producers are price makers and the government utilizes tax revenues to provide a public good. After deriving the partial equilibrium condition for an excise tax to increase price by more than the tax (for a monopoly firm), numerical examples are given, demonstrating this phenomenon for both partial and general equilibrium. In the general equilibrium context, optimal excise taxation and optimal flat-rate income taxation are compared. In the excise tax regime, prices increase by more than the taxes. In the income tax regime, prices actually decline relative to the no-tax regime. In all of the examples given, flat-rate income taxation is superior to excise taxation in terms of welfare. Book Description

This book deals with the problems of redistribution if different kinds of taxes are used as instruments. It throws light on the equity, efficiency and insurance aspects of taxation, and treats the topic at a high theoretical level. Using two ordinal equity criteria, it is shown in the first part of the book that equity and efficiency cannot be reconciled in a general model. Even if in a more restricted model equitable states exist, they cannot be implemented using an income tax. Part two of the book scrutinizes the range for redistribution which remains in a first best world if there is imperfect information and only special signals can be observed such as labour supply, income, or both. The range of redistribution for these kinds of taxes is illustrated and compared. In part three, a situation under uncertainty where a tax works as an insurance is investigated. The structure of the optimal tax scheme for several welfare functions is explored. The results with respect to equity and the range of redistribution for different sorts of taxes are of particular interest. The approach to the subject is not really new, since standard microeconomic tools are used. The book's beneficial contribution lies in its presentation of new results with respect to the equity debate and to the incentive compatibility literature.

5 out of 5 stars A hillilarious look at Finnishness.......2000-11-02

Bernhard Hillila's hilarious new book draws on lectures given at FinnFest USA `94 and `96. His lifelong Finnishness and attention to language, not to mention a penchant for puns and the good sense to laugh at himself, put him squarely in the tradition of Finnish-American humor, a tradition unknown only to those poor souls without Finnish relatives or friends. In the first section of the book, Hillila argues that "Finns are Fun Folks," supporting this radical notion with ample anecdotal evidence. In the second section, "Finnish is a Fun Language," Hillila recounts countless pronunciation bloopers caused when Americans try to speak a language that uses more vowels than consonants, or when Finnish speakers try their hand at talking "'merican." The third section, "Finglish is Even More Fun," shows how English has entered the Finnish language, not always through the front door. The book is well-written, informative and full of "funnies" for Finns and non-Finns alike.

Bernhard Hillila is currently professor emeritus of education at Valparaiso University. He has served as a pastor of bilinguial Suomi Synod congregations and was president of Suomi College and Theological Seminary in Hancock, Michigan. He has written numerous volumes of poetry and is author of the Penfield Press title, "The Sauna Is". Hillila was appointed Finnish performer of the year 1997 by the Finlandia Foundation.

                            Book Description

This book is a critical introduction to iFinnegans Wake/i and its genesis. Finn Fordham provides a survey of critical, scholarly, and theoretical approaches to Joyce's iconic masterpiece. He also analyses in detail the compositional development of certain key passages which describe the artist (Shem) and his project; the river-mother (ALP) and her 'first kiss'; the Oedipal shooting of the universal father (HCE) by the priestly son (Shaun); and the bewitching and curious daughter (Issy). His analyses demonstrate 'genetic' ways of reading the text which illustrate its immense range and playfulness and how these qualities were generated in composition. As well as opening up the densely detailed textuality of the iWake/i in all its multiplicity, Fordham argues for a relation between the way the text was formed and key aspects of its thematic content: an uprising of particularity and detail against universality, absolutes, and generality. He shows that the proliferation of individuated textual details overwhelms any unitary concept to the text. And this reflects an idealized and utopian uprising as it overcomes centralizing singularity: Finnegans do wake up. As part of this argument he proposes a qualified return to a notion of character - qualified in that characters can be understood in part as reflecting the character of compositional techniques: self-criticism and concealment, expansion and growth, flow and reflection, transferral and transformation. The character of the text's composition as a whole can be, paradoxically, summed up in the force of individuated multitudes: in the people, male and female, young and old, combining to overwhelm syntactic uniformity and singular signification.

                              3 out of 5 stars has a few errors.......2003-08-18

i love chris isaak's music which is why i bought this book, but it appears to have a few errors. after his concert, i asked him where the capo is for two hearts, and apparently it's on the third fret instead of the first which is where this book claims it is. i also noticed in his baja sessions video that for pretty girls don't cry he doesn't seem to use a capo, but the book gives chords for when a capo is on the first fret. since i am learning how to play guitar, i would prefer to learn how to play these songs the way he plays them so that i can get the correct sound.

3 out of 5 stars Yeah, no tablature.......2001-10-01

I was happy to have the written music, but like Brett, I don't read music very well and play much better from tab. Big disappointment. But nonetheless, you have the chords used, and you can piece it together well enough.

3 out of 5 stars Nice but basic.......2000-03-28

As guitar music books go, its pretty standard fare. All the songs from the album are there in all their 'lying in the hammock drinking Coronas and playing guitar' glory, so thats good. The biggest problem I have with the book is that there is no guitar tab: only the basic melody music and the chords. If you want to fully recreate that 'Chris Isaak and the Silvertones' sound, complete with lead guitar riffs, you are on your own.

                                Book Description

Over its eighty-year history, country music has evolved from little-known local talents to multimillion-dollar superstar musicians. In the 1920s, the first country music was broadcast from WSB radio in Atlanta and WBAP in Fort Worth, and the first records were recorded for Victor. In the 1930s, the first singing cowboys, among them Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, became film stars. After the war years, recordings boomed, and the Country Music Association was founded in 1958. Country music programs began on television with Porter Waggoner's program in 1960, followed by The Johnny Cash Show and Hee Haw. The Nashville Network channel was established in 1993, and from then on, the popular stars of country music have continued to break records, selling millions of copies of their albums. This book examines country music as it developed in regions throughout the United States, noting characteristics of its various subgenres such as bluegrass, honkytonk, and neotraditional music. It provides an indepth look at the people and events that have shaped the industry, and identifies the landmark recordings that old and new fans alike will want to add to their collections. Provides a detailed history of the following subgenres: hillbilly music, cowboy music, western swing, country rock, bluegrass, Nashville sound, and neotraditional, among others. Includes a chronology of country music and an extensive chapter of biographical sketches of all the major songwriters, musicians, and people in the industry.

                                Book Description

Following the original steps of pioneering naturalists, Gail Fishman profiles thirteen men who explored North America's southeastern wilderness between 1715 and the 1940s, including John James Audubon, Mark Catesby, John and William Bartram, John Muir, and Alvan Wentworth Chapman. The book is also Fishman's personal travelogue as she experiences the landscape through their eyes and describes the changes that have occurred along the region's trails and streams.

4 out of 5 stars To the Garden of Eden.......2002-01-03

The paradise of the southeast includes such cities as Charleston and natural areas as the St. Johns River, Cedar Key, and even the "Garden of Eden" in the Florida Panhandle. Fishman covers the more famous explorers such as Audubon, Muir, and Bartram but my appreciation goes to her for introducing me to some of the lesser known naturalists such as Hardy Croom who found new plants such as the Florida Yew, and the explorations of Dr. John Small and his weed wagon botanizing in the Everglades. The nations appreciation should go out to Roland Harper for researching and helping to preserve the Okefenokee Swamp.

Fishman mixes the travels of the naturalist with useful background natural history, and her own trip through the area traversed by the naturalist. Often this provides useful contrasts, but at times was superfluous; did it really add anything to the history to tell us that her car broke down or that the water in the campground shower was too hot? At times she projects her own personal emotions into the historic figure for example of William Bartram "He felt fear and must have sometimes felt a great loneliness". At times she also projects modern sensibility onto the times, for example though we may all now agree that the plan to drain the Everglades was "incredibly stupid", but it would have been more valuable to present an understanding of the culture of the late 1800's to understand this better. Despite these criticisms, I appreciated this book and hope that perhaps she does a follow up of some of the more recent naturalists such as herpetologist Archie Carr or ornithologist Arthur Howell.

It's good this was written before a couple of these guys died and we were left with their wonderful stories. Also, the intro was written by Lamar Hunt...one of the last writings he did before he passed on.

4 out of 5 stars Geek My Ride.......2006-08-03

1 out of 5 stars the book cover is really pretty.......2006-05-25

(My review of "Geek my ride")
"Very unprofessional" This is what every un experienced pc wiz and unknowledgeable custom ride street pro has thrown in there brand new bubble chevy on dub quads. If you already know that it takes a regular house plug to plug in a pc, game console or whatever it is you're desire to bring from "crib" to "auto" (having an inverter is needed). thanks to "GEEK MY RIDE" they let you know that. -duh- they also jerry rig glue scissors and tape oh yea lots of fashionable Velcro plus most of there projects lack experience. putting a book together for a geek is clumsily easy these days. and what's even really neat is now "geek('s) in question" can tell his or her com padres they've been published. everything in this book can be learned by watching a downtown crack-head (given the chance) putting a computer in a vehicle.
my copy is being recycled by now, way of-

5 out of 5 stars Made it all look like fun, and very easy to understand.......2005-12-19

This was awesome - from the intro chapters to the projects, I could get into everything. It was very easy to understand and when spring comes around I'm gonna try it (it's pretty cold right now). I'll definitely get the music-in-car stuff done this winter, but the more complex stuff will have to wait for spring.

2 out of 5 stars Making a 400 page book from 75 pages of content.......2005-10-04

I won't argue that there is some worthwhile stuff in here, and there are mentions of product names and websites that may prove useful. Many will even find the information presented worth the purchase price.

However, don't purchase this book thinking you are getting anything close to 400 pages of content. To begin with, there are many pictures, each using up half a page. That sounds good, right? Nope, the pictures show such things as an ethernet cable, a Dremel sanding bit, a picture of an extension cord and a pcture of how to use a measuring tape to measure a piece of Velcro.

More depressing, you get to look at these pictures several times, as well as read much of the content over and over. Each chapter is written as if there were no preceeding information, so you'll get to read the same information about the same products and techniques multiple times.

You know those little plastic plugs that go into A/C outlets to keep toddlers from poking pins in them? Did you need a description of them? How about a half-page picture of 4 of them artfully scattered on a table? How about multiple half-page pictures of them? How about for the extension cords, the sanding bits, etc.

I was expecting to get a 400 page book with 400 pages of information. It's nowhere near that. You may still find it worthwhile, but I found the repetition lame and unprecedented and personally resented being hoodwinked.

3 out of 5 stars Repetition is the name of the game.......2005-09-14

It's not a bad book by any means. But compared to Car PC Hacks by Damien Stolarz, it's repetitive and it lacks depth. It's less of a project book, but not much of an easy read either. There's some fun projects in there and some nice solutions, for sure. But try not getting tired of the endless "I wouldn't want you to get in an accident, while watching a DVD in your car". AAAARRGHHH.
