Book Description
It has been 25 years since Brian Froud and Alan Lee created the delightful, imaginative, and surprising Faeries-a book that quickly became a massive international bestseller and went on to sell more than a million copies. Readers continue to offer praise: "This is the most influential book I have ever read." "This book is-where are the words to describe it? Magnificent / Fabulous / Beautiful / Moving / Terrifying / Fantastic. . . ."
In celebration of Faeries' 25th anniversary, Abrams is delighted to publish a special edition featuring eight new pages and 20 new pieces of art by Froud and Lee. The artists have also contributed new introductions. Since Faeries first appeared, both men have become tremendously successful and respected figures in the worlds of film, art, and publishing. But Faeries remains perhaps their most enduring work, a superb exploration of the myths, legends, folklore, and fantasy of the world of the faeries.

Faery Fantastic!.......2007-04-26
I ordered this book from amazon not to long ago, I also enjoy the work of Brian Froud's enchanting but bewitching faeries. This book by Brian Froud and Allan Lee is wonderful, not only does it contain Brian Froud's strange yet wonderful art work, but it also contains Folk Lore, Myth, and Fantasy stories along with the art work to keep you entertained.
Pure Glamour.......2007-04-05
Each and every page positively shimmers with magic. This is the book that made Brian Froud famous and has yet to be surpassed. Alan Lee's ethereal watercolors are just as breathtaking and provide a lovely counterpoint to Froud's more dramatic drawings. But don't let the glowing images fool you into thinking this is just another "art" book. The folklore contained therein is just as sound. The flora and fauna sections are especially worthwhile. There is also a dangerous aspect to this work, which adds a fascinating spicyness. Not all faeries are the shining winged beings that the Victorians were so fond of. Some are sharp toothed and clawed monsters that come creeping out of the shadows and muck to drag the unsuspecting to their dooms.
One of the previous reviewers wrote that this book isn't for adults but not quite suitable for children either. I agree. IMHO it is a book for the inbetween people: young adults, serious children, and adults who have maintained some of their childhood innocence.
Regardless how you look at it FAERIES is a classic.
A wonderous journey . . . ........2007-02-27
As you progress through the pages of this peek into the lore of this mystical land, let your imagination run free while you allow Brian Froud and Alan Lee to weave a mystical spell of enchanted wonder, enveloping you with a sense of surreal, fantastical imaginings. This is the most fun I've had between the pages of a book in a long time!
A word to the wise for anyone expecting a sketch book full of dainty little girls with gossamer wings: the nightmares are not relegated to the back of a dusty shelf here. From Faerie Flora to the hideous Jenny Greenteeth, all the Fae folk are portrayed, both good and bad, pretty and ugly, helpful and mischievous. The stunning artwork is visionary in capturing the intrinsic mystery of this egnimatic, unseen world and its phantasmic population. The handwritten notes add to the captivating essence of the stories in an informal and comfortable way.
If I could change anything at all, I would wish that the pages were numbered and included a table of contents, so I could more easily flip to my favorites.
I would recommend this book to anyone who still wants to believe in magic, and to anyone who wants to reconnect with their childlike sense of wonder. You may be left with the belief that anything is possible . . . .
Faeries Forever.......2006-09-20
If I could give this book 10 stars I would! Brian Frouds'"Faeries" is the most amazing book I have ever read. I found this book when I was young and fell in love with faeries instantly. The illustrations are astonishing for a lack of better word. Alan Lee and Brian Froud not only draw the most realistic and imaginitive faeries, but the stories included in the pagess really makes you believe that faeries are real. Brian Froud is the original faerie author and has influenced an whole new genre with his artwork.
Fair Faeries.......2006-03-11
This was a gift for a dear friend who is quite Faery-like herself. I've given several of Mr. Froud's faery books to people, and they are inevitably very pleased. Mr. Froud is a sensitive artist and captures the "Shining Folk" or "Lords and Ladies" very impressively, almost as though he were in touch with the Elemental Kingdoms himself, consciously or unconciously. These are splendid gifts for the imaginative, whether child or adult, and I recommend them very highly.
Book Description
INTERNATIONAL POLITICAL ECONOMY focuses on the dynamics of conflict and cooperation among nations as each pursues power and wealth through international economic exchange. The authors provide a historical and topical overview of the development of the world economy from 1815 to the present, helping students understand how and why major economic powers rise and fall. This balanced blend of history, theory, and policy makes the book suitable as a main text for International Political Economy courses or as a supplemental text for an Introductory International Relations course.

Useless to anyone who isnt already an economist.......2005-05-31
Trying to decipher this book has been a huge waste of time for me,
maybe because I'm an engineering major.
Maybe you would be able to understand it if you are already an
economist.
A good source for students.......1999-02-11
This book does a nice job of explaining the beginnings of what we now call "international political economy," but it's difficult to follow at times. In order to understand much of the book, you need an understanding of various economic theories, and the book, though it tries to explain some basic concepts, still relies heavily on terms that may not be clear to someone who is not familiar with economics and economic theory. Aside from that, however, the book is pretty clearly written.
Book Description
During and after the breakdown of the Soviet Union, a wide range of competitors fought to build new political and economic empires by wresting control over resources from the state and from each other. In the only book to examine the evolution of Russian property ownership in both industry and agriculture, Andrew Barnes uses interviews, archival research, and firsthand observation to document how a new generation of capitalists gained control over key pieces of the Russian economy by acquiring debt-ridden factories and farms once owned by the state. He argues that although the Russian government made policies that affected how actors battled one another, it could never rein in the most destructive aspects of the struggle for property.
Barnes shows that dividing the spoils of the Soviet economy involved far more than the experiment with voucher privatization or the scandalous behavior of a few Moscow-based "oligarchs." In Russia, the control of property yielded benefits beyond mere profits, and these high stakes fueled an intense, enduring, and profound conflict over real assets. This fierce competition empowered the Russian executive branch at the expense of the legislature, dramatically strengthened managers in relation to workers, created a broad array of business conglomerates, and fundamentally shaped regional politics, not only blurring the line between government and business but often erasing it.

Why didn't I think of that............2000-03-17
Much like their first book, this is incredibly humorus. I was, at times, laughing out loud as I read it, cover to cover. Writing myself, I often wondered, "Why didn't I think of that?" A great pick-me-up for anyone. I have to say that my favorite was this: "I resent that other people's selfishness gets in the way of my own narcissim." Keep up the good work!
Another Winner!.......1999-09-29
If you liked their first book, Today I Will Nourish My Inner Martyr, you'll love this one! A perfect gift book for anyone with a sense of humor who feels "staying physically fit" is overrated. Get the fudge out and enjoy!!

Book Description
Parchments of Gender builds up an important source of inter-disciplinary information for the study of gender and the body in ancient history. The central and unifying theme is the body's relation to gender. With essays covering the ancient communities of Greece, Rome, and Judaea, the volume argues that the body is culturally constructed and not a sign of what is natural. Ancient bodies are "parchments of gender": textual skins on which gender is inscribed and on which can be traced other interconnecting matrices of knowledge and power that give these bodies their seemingly legible contours. The volume also demonstrates the central role of antiquity in the developing cultural formation of the gendered body as a concept, a practice and an experience in modern societies.

Voice of the Mets, Norte Dame, and television sports.......2002-05-04
I became a Lindsey Nelson fan, like others, simply by hearing his voice and broadcasting style many times. He had, to me, one of the most recognizable voices in sports broadcasting. Nelson's style was low-key, informative, and easy to digest. His book is excellent--those who remember him or followed sports during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s will especially enjoy the book. Nelson was not only a great broadcaster, but shows he is a terrific writer also. He actually started in the newspaper business as a youngster, and his flair for writing is evidenced throughout the book. He was the play-by-play voice of the Mets for 17 years and also for many years the voice of Notre Dame football highlights. His tales of his early, and later years at the University of Tennessee are outstanding. Although he passed away in 1995, his legend continues to shine as UT's baseball facility is named Lindsey Nelson Stadium. A fitting tribute for a wonderful man, and an outstanding sports broadcaster for over 30 years.
A Sportscasters Life.......2001-06-01
This may be the best book about sportscasting since Red Barber's "Rubarb in the Catbird's Seat." Lindsey Nelson was the top sportscaster in the country during the late 50's and into the early 60's. He was the first well-known TV play-by-play man but he spanned back into the radio days and writes about the radio guys like Ted Husing, Bill Stern and Mel Allen. It's basically the life of a sports announcer at the top of the profession. He also writes about his WW 2 experiences and getting started in radio in Knoxville, Tennessee. He also writes eloquently about his daughter who was born with a mental handicap, the early death of his wife and his love of travel...he once went to Timbuktu. One of the best things about the book is he wrote it himself...no ghost writer.

Review.......2006-02-09
Some of this book is helpful but for the most part I felt like it was a waste of time. There are numerous type-Os that are sometimes confusing and misleading. Some major concepts are not explained at all. The chapter ending projects are pretty much all the same. Most only use one or two of the new functions covered and ignore the rest. The code is written in double-spaced sections broken up by paragraphs of explanation. Then the whole example is written out again double-spaced. The material could have been presented in a way that is just as understandable in 100 less pages. It seems like a written assignment done over the weekend by a lazy student with an assignment of X-pages due on Monday.
A Excellent Guide for the 1st Time Programmers.......2005-07-20
Contrary to what some may say, windows shell scripting is far from dead. In fact, with each new operating system that Microsoft unleashes on the world, Microsoft continues to develop and expand Windows Shell Scripting's capabilities.
As the title says, this book is designed for 1st time programmers who are interesting in getting started with Windows Shell Scripting. However, the book can also be used by more experienced readers with previous programming experience who want to quickly ramp up on Windows Shell Scripting. The author teaches his subject and makes things interesting by demonstrating how to create computer games. This book is definately not for hardcore System Administrators.... but everybody else should benefit from it.
Useful for Beginners........2005-01-19
This book is suitable only for those who are complete newcomers to shell scripting in general and Microsoft systems in general.
Shell scripting is a useful skill to learn if you are a systems administrator or simply want to automate tasks. Most operating systems provide a scripting language and it is preferred in many ways to those scripting languages that have to have interpreters installed before you can use them (Python, Perl, Rebol, Tcl/tk etc) because the operating system is primed for its use.
Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000 and later MS operating systems offer a simple scripting language that expands on the .BAT and >CMD files language of MS-DOS, Windows 95 and 98. That language was far too limited to be of any real use, but the latest incarnation provides a powerful tool.
This book will provide a gentle introduction to Windows shell scripting at a level that is probably sufficient for the power user, but too low for the sysadmin. You can learn the elements of programming from this book, although its much easier if you already have experience.
The examples chosen are something of a compromise, but that's to be expected in any text. My real criticism comes from the presentation of the example scripts. There is too much white space and every ECHO used to produce a blank line on screen is reproduced. This makes the scripts very hard to comprehend and makes the book longer than it needs to be. All the text examples are provided on CD-ROM, so there is no need to type it in. The book is very weak in not providing useful examples for the type of user it tries to target - power users and sysadmins. They will learn very little from this.
If you want a thorough grounding in Windows shell scripting then read William Stanek's "Microsoft Windows Command-Line" published by Microsoft Press ISBN 0-7356-2038-5 and learn the full capabilities of this mode.
Absolute Beginner for sure!.......2004-06-27
While .BAT files still have uses, especially if you're still using older technology, Jscripts and VBscripts are a better starting point for absolute beginners now. But what you learn here will not go to waste if you move up. All the examples are on the accompanying CD, so you won't spend a lot of time typing.
