    Book Description

Fenway Park is the most famous ballpark—and arguably stadium—in all of sports. From the ominous Green Monster, to the notorious cramped seats (including the lone red seat that marks Ted Williams's record-setting longest home run), to the hand-operated scoreboard (if only those walls could talk), Fenway Park has inspired more lavish praise and outrageous comparison than any American sports arena in history. From the best-selling author Dan Shaughnessy and the two-time Pulitzer Prize–winning photographer Stan Grossfeld, Fenway is the ultimate memorial to the beloved Boston ballpark. This expanded and updated edition features a new foreword by Peter Gammons, updated text throughout, including a new chapter on Fenway under the current ownership, and more than thirty new photographs covering, among other things, the 2004 World Series, the new Green Monster seats, the reconstruction of the ".406 Club" for the 2006 season, and more.

A religious shrine or a giant pinball machine? Museum or amusement park? Historical or hysterical? These are just some of the puzzlers posed by Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaugnessy in this lovely homage to the second oldest, single most complex ballpark in the majors. The answers are debatable. What remains absolute are the images Boston's Fenway Park has burned into the imaginations of the faithful and the faithless since the day it opened, a short week after the Titanic sank.

Shaugnessy and photographer Stan Grossfeld combine to offer an often-spectacular visual tribute that looks both back in time and into the heart of all the park's odd nooks, crannies, shadows, and hiding places. They go inside the hand-operated scoreboard on the fabled Green Monster. There's even a lovely picture of a pastoral Fenway covered in snow. Shaughnessy's text--"When they raze Fenway, it'll be like cutting down an old tree. Count the rings. There's one for each celebration and heartache suffered by Red Sox fans"--is affectionate and quite personal. He adds to it with a series of short, lyrical reminiscences from those who've mused about the field-- David Halberstam, Bob Costas, Stephen King, and Doris Kearns Goodwin--and those who've played on it: Don Zimmer, Bucky Dent, Dennis Eckersley, and Carl Yastrzemski. Fittingly, Ted Williams pens the foreward. The result of the amalgamation is an altogether splendid celebration of a landmark about to be pushed by progress into memory. --Jeff Silverman

    Book Description

A religious shrine or a giant pinball machine? A museum or an amusement park? The oldest ballpark in the major leagues, the last of the single-deck theaters, Fenway Park has inspired more lavish praise and outrageous comparison than any American sports arena in history. With its ominous Green Monster, the lone red seat that marks Ted Williams's record-setting longest home run, the hand-operated scoreboard at the base of the Wall, the fishbowl-style luxury "600 Club" with the press box perched high above, and the Hall of Fame faces, who could mistake Fenway Park for any other? Beautifully illustrated with Stan Grossfeld's prize-winning color photography, and written with an obvious love of the place, including interviews with an illustrious list of fans, players, coaches, and celebrities, FENWAY: A BIOGRAPHY IN WORDS AND PICTURES showcases the grand old park and memorializes it for generations of fans to come.

    4 out of 5 stars Sweet!.......2006-03-17

A very cool and nostalgic view of Fenway through words and pictures. The book was written when they thought Fenway park was going to be torn down. It still stands today but the writers wrote from their hearts since they thought they were saying their last goodbyes wich makes it a great read.

    1 out of 5 stars I didn't need to know. ..........2003-09-27

Why the fixation on the men's room at Fenway, Danny Boy? I thought those revealing pictures were insensitive and disgusting, and can't be justified by a Mapplethorpian defense of their artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Better than being there (Almost).......2003-05-21

When I got this book from my bro, I really was glad he gave it to me because, This book is so good that it's almost like being there! Full of outstanding photos and outstanding writing by Dan and the essays by people such as Bob Costas , James Earl Jones, Bucky Dent are verry verrry interesting and almost magical. It's so good, I read it in 2 days! I hope they keep Fenway, unless it's absolutly time for it to be torn down, Any baseball fan should get this book, because after Fenway is gone,it's history!

    5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2001-05-17

As the old addage goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. For fans of baseball, there are a select few "classic" parks left that allow that saying to come to light. Yankee Stadium, replete with all of her splendor and majesty; "The Friendly Confines" of Wrigley Field, her bleacher bums, and the ivy; and, greatest of them all, Fenway Park, the oldest park in the majors left standing.

When one sees Fenway park for the first time, one is immediately taken with the GREEN that the park exudes- the well kept grass, the Green Monster, the green bleacher seats, the green of the luxury and broadcast seats behind home plate. One will also be drenched in the history of this grand park- Pesky's Pole, left field (where several of the greatest players of that position donned Red Sox uniforms from Duffy Lewis to Teddy Ballgame to Yaz, and Rice), the left field pole, where Carlton Fisk hit his miraculous home run in '75; the manually operated left field wall scoreboard, complete with the morse code on it stating then-owner Tom Yawkey's name... Fenway Park is a living, breathing archaelogical site.

Famed Boston Globe writer Dan Shaughnessy takes the reader of this book to each part of Fenway Park with remarkably clear and bright pictures, as well as choice anecdotes from former Sox greats like Ted Williams, Yaz, and the Eck, to other notables such as Jim Palmer, Stephen King, and Bob Costas.

It is the pictures, though, that dominate this great book, and what pictures they are. Focusing mainly on the fans, filled with joy, hope, anticipation, concern, angst, (and a Yankee fan giving us the middle finger) the book captures well what it is to be part of Red Sox Nation on any given day at the park. Add to it photos from outside the park on Yawkey Way, filled with vendors, street musicians, scalpers, etc..and those of the Sox themselves, and this book well encompasses a day at Fenway. The old photos of Williams, Ruth, the Royal Rooters, and "Honey Fitz" throwing the 1st pitch as opening day 1912, remind us to Fenway's rich and storied history, as well.

With the future of Fenway Park well in the balance, this book is all the more poignant and worth sitting down and studying. Whether you believe in "progress" or in saving Fenway Park,(I am among the latter) Shaughnessy's book offers the perfect snapshots to either remember Fenway by or to use in your arguments for saving her. Whatever may happen, Fenway Park is an American landmark, and "Fenway" helps to capture her in all her dignity.

As author David Halberstam said: "You go to Fenway and you think, 'Something wonderful's going to happen today.'"

4 out of 5 stars Long Live the Green Monster.......2000-08-14

I really admire Dan Shaughnessy's loyalty to Fenway Park - the man has written about Fenway in ways that allow the reader to feel as though we can sense the majic and beauty of the Red Sox's home.

In this book, there are countless pictures and comments which truly capture the essence of Fenway. For those of us who have been to Fenway, this book is a wonderful trip down memory lane. For those who have not been to Fenway, this book will make you feel as if you'd already been there.

With a new ballpark being built for the Red Sox, it is unquestionably a good idea to have Dan Shaughnessy's book, so you can have a piece of the historical Fenway Park in your life.

John McMillan's Reinventing the Bazaar is an extremely accessible description of markets large and small, as well as an explanation of their underlying mechanisms. An "absolutely free market," he says, is a "free-for-all brawl," while a "real market" is an "ordered brawl." Sprinkling his analysis with hundreds of anecdotes and examples--prison camps, eBay, the American experiment with alcohol prohibition, the Tokyo fish market, and traditional Ghanaian bazaars--and pertinent quotes from the likes of Chekhov, Twain, and Steinbeck, McMillan animates his subject. Why do banks build showcase headquarters? Which "frictions" brake, and which spur, various markets? Is the "invisible hand" attached to a clothed arm? Why are both pro- and antimarket absolutists, in McMillan's view, the economics equivalent of "flat-earthers"? Is there such an animal as a "perfect" market? Reinventing the Bazaar answers these questions, and many more, in an eminently wise, entertaining, and instructive way. --H. O'Billovich

    Book Description

Clear, insightful, and nondogmatic, this book gives us a new appreciation for one of our most ubiquitous institutions.

From the wild swings of the stock market to the online auctions of eBay to the unexpected twists of the world's post-Communist economies, markets have suddenly become quite visible. We now have occasion to ask, "What makes these institutions work? How important are they? How can we improve them?"

Taking us on a lively tour of a world we once took for granted, John McMillan offers examples ranging from a camel trading fair in India to the $20 million per day Aalsmeer flower market in the Netherlands to the global trade in AIDS drugs. Eschewing ideology, he shows us that markets are neither magical nor immoral. Rather, they are powerful if imperfect tools, the best we've found for improving our living standards. A New York Times Notable Book.

    5 out of 5 stars Finally, a reasonable, non-ideological book about markets.......2007-05-17

I had never expected to give a 5-star review to a book about markets. But this book is a very even-handed description, favoring a case-by-case approach to "market design". Government is neither all bad nor all good, and markets are neither all good nor all bad, in this view. Nor does McMillan wrap markets in the mantles of politics and/or religion, a la Milton Friedman, George Gilder and others. The writing style isn't as felicitous as Tim Harford's "The Undercover Economist", which covers a lot of the same economics theory as this book; nor is this book quite as quick a read. But it has more real-life examples and more intellectual depth overall, while still being very much a popular, non-technical book. Like Harford's book, this one gives orthodox neoclassical economics theory (Arrow-Debreu, equilibrium, supply and demand, and other "Econ 101" stuff) more credence than it merits, but McMillan's pragmatism and professional humility somewhat compensate for this defect. Sadly, John McMillan passed away in March 2007 from cancer while still in his 50s. This book assures us that such a reasonable voice won't vanish completely -- which is lucky for us, since such voices have always been in short supply.

4 out of 5 stars pleasant and valuable reading.......2007-01-29

Well organized, very well researched, surprisingly readable prose for an academic, and a well balanced mix of case studies from a wide variety of actual markets and more abstract reflections based in good part on these studies. I'm not giving it the full accolade of 5 stars because of some repetitiousness and a "target audience" problem: most readers will either find themselves reading relatively long passages that teach them nothing new (if they're already well-grounded in microeconomics) or else faced with some concepts that are pretty hard and not adequately taught in this book (if the readers lack any previous study of microeconomics) -- that's a difficult problem to solve, and I don't claim to know a solution, but Professor McMillan hasn't found one either. Nevertheless, I'd recommend the book to all levels of readers, as just about everybody will get many useful notions and ways of thinking from it, and it is, all in all, quite pleasant to read from cover to cover.

    5 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted...........2005-09-29

a fantastic review of the idea, basic history, and pros and cons of market economies. McMillan writes in a very accessable and yet erudite way, and his personal experieces (which he shares) demonstrate his authority on the subject. In looking for a good, basic introduction to macroeconomic ideas this is a helpful read. If you ever encounter leftist or rightist ideologues or a college student who is enticed by communism (a great IDEA, even McMillan agrees), this is a good reference book to silence unfounded criticisms. McMillan is empirical in his reasoning and his potent examples from history and real life are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Begginers Guide to Markets.......2004-08-21

Mc Millan's book makes it easy to understand how markets work, as well as their bennefits. Although it is not a book advocating free markets, it puts some sense into the idea through fun examples, stories and quotes. Anyone toying with the idea that free market economies are bad should read this book. As an imparial comment it might show a thing or two about why it is that free market policies don't seem to work for some countries(because they are not all that free)while in others they seem miracuolous.

The secrets of economic growth and sensible pro market policy can be extracted, although I wouldn't base a government's development plan on it.

The book is fun to read, easy to understand and highly illustrative. A must read for anyone (for or aginst free markets)

5 out of 5 stars Essential Information and Wisdom.......2004-01-15

Wherever buyers and sellers get together, there is a market. In the absence of currency, trades have been consummated by assigning relative value to items (e.g. livestock, weapons, clothing) or services (e.g. plowing, medical care, harvesting). Throughout human history, there have been markets in one form or another at which people exchanged or purchased goods of various kinds, usually in a centrally located area such as a crossroads, harborside, village center, or town square. Buyers and sellers (or traders) gravitated to markets where and when there would be the most people. At least to some extent, all that remains true today even with the emergence of cybermarkets. Effective marketing in the 21st century creates or increases demand first by attracting interest. Hence the importance of visibility. It must also provide a convincing argument as to why a given product or service is preferable to other options, including not purchasing anything. Supply and demand often come into play. Pricing is frequently a decisive issue. For centuries, be it in an ancient bazaar or modern market, buying/selling/trading is among the most dynamic of human activities.

In this lively as well as informative book, McMillan offers "a natural history of markets" which helps us to gain a better understanding of how markets work as well as of what they can and can't do. "Markets do what they are supposed to do, however, only if they are we structured. Any successful economy has an array of devices and procedures to enable markets to work smoothly. A workable platform has five elements: information flows smoothly; property rights are protected; people can be trusted to live up to their promises; side effects are curtailed; and competition is fostered." I agree with McMillan that, as a result of innovations made by participants, "spontaneous evolution is the main driver of [private sector] markets" if and when provided with assistance from the public sector (i.e. government).

Because throughout history the strength of markets has been their adaptability and their "restless reinvention," McMillan argues, shaping new markets is both a task for governments and an opportunity for entrepreneurs. Appropriate involvement by the former ensures, for example, the protection of intellectual property; appropriate involvement by the latter ensures that the process of adaptability and reinvention is sustained. There are so many excellent books now in print which discuss the most effective marketing strategies and tactics.

Secondarily, McMillan examines several of them but his primary purpose, as I understand it, is to explain how and why the market economy ("...the worst form of economy, except for all the others which have been tried from time to time") "solves some all but intractable problems...[because] it admits variety and permits criticism" This book will be of greatest interest and value to decision-makers with responsibility for marketing within organizations which either have no "workable platform" or one which may soon collapse from the weight of external competition or internal inadequacy.

I also highly recommend this book to those who have a keen interest in cultural anthropology. As suggested earlier, the bazaar or market has always been and always will be among the most dynamic of human activities. Why? Because it must constantly be reinvented to accommodate ever-changing human needs and interests. McMillan's comprehensive analysis of that volatile process is a unique and brilliant achievement.

        Book Description

"An eccentric, funny, shrewd book . . . absorbing and amusing reading."
--The New York Times Book Review
The glorious tradition of the Broadway musical from Irving Berlin to Jerome Kern and Rodgers and Hammerstein to Stephen Sondheim. And then . . . Cats and Les Miz. Mark Steyn's Broadway Babies Say Goodnight is a sharp-eyed view of the whole span of Broadway musical history, seven decades of brilliant achievements the best of which are among the finest works American artists have made. Show Boat, Oklahoma!, Carousel, Gypsy, and more.
In an energetic blend of musical history, analysis, and backstage chat, Mark Steyn shows us the genius behind the 'simple' musical, and asks hard questions about the British invasion of Broadway and the future of the form. In this delicious book he gives us geniuses and monsters, hits and atomic bombs, and the wonderful stories that prove show business is a business which -- as the song goes --there's no business like.

5 out of 5 stars Wit, Wisdom, Opinion, And Tap-Tap-Tapping Feet!.......2005-09-25

Marc Steyn is a Brit transplanted to New Hampshire who writes mostly political commentary for papers in Chicago, London, and Canada plus columns for National Review, but this volume harkens back to his days as a theater critic and historian to give us a complete, though opinionated, picture of the history of the musical theater--first on Broadway and then in London. His writing is full of puns and wit, but more importantly, the stories he tells and the quotes from every major figure ranging from Lerner & Lowe to Andrew Lloyd Webber put the whole mysterious world of how musicals are born, rehearsed, and then live or die into perspective that both the outsider looking in and the theatrical professional can appreciate. He also uses his knowledge of history to put shows and their popularity into the context of their times--for example sharing the fact that literally hundreds of shows in the immediate post-Civil War period dealt with ghosts and spirits because the strong belief in an afterlife gave the nation a spiritual soothing after the horrors of massive death in the war itself. He covers the songwriters, the book writers, the hits, the flops, the stars---even the whole CONCEPT of a "star" and how it has changed over the years--and you will be entertained and enlightened indeed.

This is a book perfect for a gift for anyone you know who loves theater, music, or hopes to be a part of the professional world of it or is already. It isn't exactly a tale with a happy ending--the current state of the musical is pretty grim in many ways Steyn elaborates on--but it does point out the way "home" to real successes in the future, too.

From obscure historical stuff you'd never find anywhere else to major "name" showbiz stars and their gossip, "Broadway Babies Say Goodnight" is a superb read for the theater fan.

5 out of 5 stars A history of Broadway as told by one who love's it.......2004-07-26

This is one of those gem of a books that come along every once in a while. After the first reading I started all over again. The writing is that good. The book is laid out like a Broadway show, dividing itself into a two act play with scenes. In Act I, Mr. Steyn traces the evolution of the musical from its beginnings in Vienna through its importation to the America by European trained musicians to its eventual takeover and refinement by American composers. We see the beautiful progression from the dance hall Ziegfeld folly to organic synthesis of music and dialog in such wonderful works of art as Show Boat and Fiddler on the Roof. Act II is the decline and fall of this wonderful artform as it reverts back to its operatic beginnings with such good shows like A Chorus Line and Chicago to abominations like Cats and Starlight Express.

This is an author who loves his subject. His first hand interviews with some of the great luminaries of the Broadway theater like Jules Styne, George Abbott, and Cy Coleman bring the backstage evolution of the musical to life. His marvelous command of the English language make the subject matter even more interesting.

The other reviewers who suggest "homophobia" on Steyn's part are way off base. It is his forthright acknowledgement of gay accomplishment in the theater along with the terrible scourge of AIDS that has had a significant impact on the musical because its greatest modern practitioners are dying off without passing on their wisdom. Of what relevance is the fact that Steyn is a political conservative or a sometime writer for the Wall Street Journal have anything to do with the subject of Broadway musicals?

Enjoy this book for what it is; a glorious paean to a great art form.

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate, nasty and mistakes snide comments for wit.......2003-12-15

"Only a clever human can make a real joke about virtue...any of them can be trained to talk as if virtue were funny. Among flippant people the joke is always assumed to have been made. No one actually makes it; but every serious subject is discussed in a manner which implies that they have already found a ridiculous side to it."
--From "The Screwtape Letters," by C.S. Lewis:

The entire book is written with an air of detached superiority to the subject matter. Even when he is praising composers, it is always with a knowing wink to the reader. Steyn has accomplished nothing to warrant the smug tone of self-congratulation and condescension he affects when discussing the geniuses of musical theater. If Mark Steyn is capable of a sincere, unironic pleasure in the Broadway classics, one would not know it from his snide, glib prose.

I am almost loath to comment on Steyn's view of homosexuality. The last thing I want to do is supply conservatives with a reason to portray themselves as victims, since the Right has embraced the PC argument that criticizing other people's views is unacceptable and a form of censorship. But I will say this: as a Republican, I wish this element of my party would realize how many, sensible, compassionate people they dissuade from conservatism with anti-gay rhetoric.

The author has done a good job into proposing ways we don't have to remain a passive TV viewer giving ideas of the way we can make out TV programming better.

The audience is what TV companies need, so we must decide what we want to see and how we want to see it.

If you're interested in reading what audiences can do, this is a great starting point.

                Book Description

Written for a diverse audience (all ages, different educational backgrounds, varying educational goals), this book allows for self-paced or online learning. The primary goal of GO! Series: Microsoft Excel 2003 Comprehensive is to teach Microsoft Excel 2003 quickly and easily, with an approach that is based on clearly-defined projects. A key feature of the book is the use of Microsoft procedural syntax: steps begin with where the action is to take place, followed by the action itself. The instruction is error-free, clearly written, and logically arranged. This book provides users with the skills to solve business problems using the computer as a tool. Combining all of the material of Volumes 1 and 2 of the series, the Comprehensive edition covers: getting started, with Excel; creating a workbook with formulas; advanced formulas, functions, and charting; customizing a workbook; adding logic and protecting the workbook; checking work and working with others; advanced formatting and functions; using database capabilities in Excel; integrating Excel with other office applications; PivotTables and PivotCharts; customized Excel with macros; and visual basic for applications. An efficient and handy guide for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of Microsoft Excel 2003.

I borrowed this book looking to perform one specific task, which I found at the end of a chapter. I spent an hour working through the entire chapter instead and easily learned, understood, and REMEMBERED how to perform a variety of tasks dealing with macros. The problems are simple, GOAL oriented with excellent recap sessions for memorization. Tasks designed as springboards for more advanced projects.

This book is extremely applicable to numerous problems businesses face when using excel. Work your way from basic formuals to writing VBA code and formatting the various Microsoft Office programs using excel. I was able to use the examples given in the book to have Excel command outlook to automatically email me if a date was 2 or 3 days away.

An excellent tool---worth the investment by any small business using excel. Great companion to the Help feature on excel.

4 out of 5 stars many detailed tasks.......2005-05-16

The authors have gone to some length to comprehensively explain and test many aspects of Excel. It's probably accurate to say that the testing is as important as the teaching. The book is geared explicitly to letting you do numerous specific tasks (or problems). Vital in internalising the information in the lessons.

Actually, the main narrative is itself very action oriented. You are taken through detailed pathways into Excel. Hence the book is good for those who have trouble learning from a standard text that they might typically find to be too general. Another usage context is if you need a quick refresher; especially on specific operations.

The problems themselves don't seem too hard. The biggest issue may simply be finding the time and resolve to go through some rather lengthy ones. But then again, the problems are not meant to be trivial "one-liners". There are other books, notably by O'Reilly, of the cookbook format. Where the "recipes" are one or two pages of steps you do with some program. These certainly have merit, when you are looking for solutions to simple queries. But the GO book is more at a project level, with inherently lengthier tasks.
