Book Description

If you sense someone’s watching you from afar, or if you feel a shadow other than your own at your back, I might as well pack it up and call it a day.

It’s a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can’t be touched by the law.

Now, after nineteen years of service, Lily has been drawn into a dangerous game that hasn’t been sanctioned, seeking vengeance for her own reasons. Each move bolder than the next, she is compromising her superiors, drawing unwanted attention, and endangering her very life. Though stress and shock have made her feel somewhat invincible and a little cocky, Lily knows that she too can be taken out in an instant. And if it’s her time, so be it. She intends to go down fighting.

A CIA agent himself, Lucas Swain recognizes the signs of trauma in the line of fire. His orders: either bring her in or bring her down. Yet he too is drawn into the game with Lily Mansfield, dancing on a tightrope as he tries to avoid a major international incident while still battling a tenacious foe who is dogging their every step. Keeping laser focus on the task at hand while vigilantly watching her back, Mansfield never sees the lethal peril that lies directly in her path . . . and how loyalty has a price.

Chock-full of the intrigue, breathless action, and sensuality that have made Linda Howard the master of romantic suspense, Kiss Me While I Sleep is a daring thriller of passion, sudden twists, and richly imagined characters who live and breathe in readers’ hearts. It is the most gripping and complex novel of Linda Howard’s career.

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2007-09-24

I have recently become addicted to Linda Howards novels and i have loved every one i've acquired.

5 out of 5 stars It'll make you think, if nothing else!.......2007-08-08

We've all seen Alias, with kick-butt heroine Sidney and dreamy hero Vaughan; great show. Now meet the most unusual heroine ever: Lily Mansfield, assassin! Yes, you read that right, assassin, contracted by the CIA at eighteen to get rid of evil, corrupt targets. At one stage in the book she mentions she threw up for days after her first hit. Who can blame her? As the years go on Lily gets tougher, harder, faster, moving like smoke as she completes her assignments. She's now in her thirties, very clever, a master of disguise and possessor of several aliases plus a hidden stash of money. When she suddenly goes out on her own and assassinates the man responsible for killing her best friends and their daughter, the CIA decide to eliminate her as a rogue agent. (The scene where she takes this guy out is chillingly hair-raising, by the way, totally mesmerizing to read as her need for revenge unrolls.) The CIA send agent Lucas Swain after her, a lean-hipped, laid-back, easy-talkin', gorgeous, sexy, totally yummy cute guy, with a zest for life in total contrast to his deadly job. He finds her in the middle of a gun battle in France. She's outside the facility where a deadly avian flu is being deliberately cultivated, side by side with the antidote the company plans to `sell', and so make millions. Of course, the sons of the man she assassinated also want to kill her, and they own the above facility. Things get very murky in terms of motive and deed and greed. Swain doesn't exactly advertise he's there to bring Lily in, dead or alive. In true Linda Howard form, Swain and Lily fall in love: unexpectedly, hard and fast. Each with their own agenda, each hiding secrets and lies, each totally hot for the other. In the end the double twist will make you gasp - we didn't see it coming. Oh, just take the afternoon off and read the book. It pushes romance further than ever before, with a bold take-no-prisoners approach and fragile moral boundaries that might shock you.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorites.......2007-01-26

I have to say I wasn't able to get that interested in Kiss Me While I sleep. It began good, but quickly lost momentum. I found that nearly all the characters were repetitive in how they reached the same conclusions, and was really rather boring to read the same information over again with a different character. There wasn't even that big of a difference in their viewpoints, despite the fact that two were CIA agents (Lily a rouge), and the other a supposed terrorist or mafia type villain. Another notch against this novel is that the two characters, Lily and Lucas begin their relationship with a lie. Which wouldn't be entirely bad, but to have it continue through out the entire novel when the two characters are trying to build a supposed relationship? Then only to have Lily, a character built to resemble a strong, intelligent woman to fall back into the arms of a man she never truly new and who lied to her through out their entire relationship? It had me rolling my eyes and I felt that the characters deserved better than that. In all, I wasn't impressed with this novel. What could they possibly build their relationshp on? Past lies?
I love most of Linda Howard books, but for some reason, the spy/government conspiracy novels just don't pair with her other romantic/suspense novels. In all, read it, but take it from a library because to me, this book isn't worth buying.

Favorite recommendations: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Open Season, Heart of Fire and Mr. Perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be Sorry!!!!!!.......2007-01-05

I really wish I had taken notice of all the negative reviews of this book. This was certainly one of Howard's worst efforts. I can't even describe just how bad this book was. The plot completely unbelievable and just plain silly. How simple vengeance turned into an act of "saving the world," I will never figure out. The characters were completely underdeveloped. There's no "spark" between the hero and heroine. They go from acquaintances to lovers in the blink of an eye. Even worse, the love scenes, (always one of Howard's best efforts)were completely drab. I also figured out who the "bad guy" was mid-story. It was just that predictable.
I have a shelf full of Howard's books, both hardback and softcover. This will not be one of them. As a matter of fact, I'm listing it for sale on Amazon right now!!!If you really want to read this story (and what true Howard fan wouldn't??)please, please, please check it out at your library. That way, you won't feel cheated out of of 20+ bucks.

I noticed that Howard has another book coming out later this year. That will be two books in one year, where she usually does one. Could feeling rushed and overwhelmed by deadlines be the reason she released such "trash" to her loyal fans? Who knows?

5 out of 5 stars Linda Howard has you going right up till the end!!.......2006-12-22

I thought this was a great book that keeps you guessing till the very end. I still ended up surprised by the ending and very pleased. The book is a quick read and keeps you interested all the way through. I have enjoyed all of her books and am always looking for her next one out.

We Make The Road By Walking is the fruit of eight years of work by EPICA staff on Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The book examines the role of liberation theology in the new international context. It looks at the Church of the poor in a postwar period in Nicargaua, El Salvador and Guatemala. The indigenous face of the Church in Chiapas and the way women are transforming the Church are highlighted. The defense of the rights of the poor in El Salvador and recovery of historic memory in Guatemala offer hope and challenge. The role of Haiti's "Little Church," and the new relationship between Church and State in Cuba are outlined. The final two sections illuminate the witness of martyrs, and they call for solidarity for the new millennium, especially the Jubilee drive to cancel debts.

                  Book Description

This challenging book extends standard economic theory to take into account the presence of heterogeneity among economic agents. It argues for an approach to economic analysis which regards the economy as an interactive system with heterogeneous agents and not simply a system which treats aggregates as some 'representative' individual.

The authors treat each sector of the economy as behaving like a single individual. They apply this approach to many macro- and micro- analyses including monetary policy and firms, technological innovation and the insideroutsider model. In conclusion the authors find that this approach proves much more fruitful in explaining empirical phenomena than much of the existing theory. The result of this approach to economic theory which encompasses many realistic features, provides a vision of the economy which is not at odds with common sense, but which does not abandon rigorous analysis.

This important book will be welcomed by those interested in both macro and micro economic theory.

                    Book Description

Representative agent models have become a predominant means of studying the macroeconomy in modern economics without there being much discussion in the literature about their propriety or usefulness. This volume evaluates the use of these models in macroeconomics, examining the justifications for their use and concluding that representative agent models are neither a proper nor a particularly useful means of studying aggregate behaviour.

There has been little discussion in macroeconomic literature about the propriety or usefulness of representative agent models. This volume aims to evaluate the use of these models as a means of studying aggregate behaviour.

In Whistle While You Work, Richard Leider and David Shapiro counter the clichéd query about what you want to be when you grow up with a more intriguing question: "What is your life's calling?" The authors define calling as "the inner urge to give our gifts away in service to something we are passionate about in an environment that is consistent with our values." Drawing upon psychologist James Hillman's metaphor of the acorn programmed to grow into an oak tree, Leider and Shapiro guide readers to discover their "core gifts" and the work they were born to do. Each chapter describes a conversation with a cabdriver in a different city to introduce a key idea about the process of heeding your life's calling. These lively conversations are followed by stories of individuals--from a Motorola executive to a building security guard--who have identified their calling. The stories are paired with bulls-eye exercises that allow readers to discover their calling. Tools include "calling cards" to identify core gifts, a "calling journal" and the "calendar/checkbook" exercise to align values with time management.

The book would have been strengthened with more narrative about the relationship between choosing a calling and maintaining a positive cash flow. Yet the clarity and conviction of its approach sets this book apart from other do-what-you-love career books. It is an eloquent and practical blueprint for being at home in the world by making a living with your uniqueness. --Barbara Mackoff

                        Book Description

Everyone has a calling with a unique purpose to fulfill in the world. Heeding it is about deliberately choosing a way of life and work consistent with individual gifts, passions, and values. Through powerful stories and a guided exploration of 52 possible callings, Whistle While You Work helps readers discover how to make a living doing what they were born to do. The authors provide a framework for embracing a very abstract subject in a systematic, practical, and fun way. And their Calling Cards "TM" help readers develop answers to profound life questions as they learn to "listen with the third ear" to cultivate a mode of searching that isn't limited to the merely tangible.

5 out of 5 stars what it does best.......2007-06-18

This book helped me put a Name Tag on my life's calling.
I also found out how often I am able to use it in my job (only 10% of the time).
Now I need to know what jobs I could get that would maximize my use of my gifts - so I will never have to 'work' another day.

There are 52 transcendant calling cards from which everyone can pick their gifts. There were not enough examples of how people use their callings appropriately. I would have at least wanted to see a list to match jobs to calling cards.

I highly recommend this book. I've been trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grew up for a long time. Now I finally am able to put a name to it.
I got the book from the library, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

3 out of 5 stars Fluff That Makes You Feel Good.......2003-03-11

Books like this do everything in their power to get your drive going. And every time I read one (which isn't often), I do feel good about myself. But in the end, I'm back on Earth a few days later. OK, I am sounding pathetic, but the truth is, there isn't a whole lot of practical advice here, just motivational anecdotes. To be frank, there is nothing wrong with that. It just needs more to distinguish itself.

It starts out promising with the part about choosing the characteristics you most want in a job. However, it goes downhill with the straight out of "Touch By an Angel" cabbie stories that start every chapter. What I really did like about this book is that it makes you reevaluate the situation you are currently in to make the most of it. It doesn't preach dropping everything and chasing after your dream because not all of us are in a position to do so. Another thing I liked is that it keeps the message short (under 200 pages). There is no need for a book like this to be 300+ pages. All in all, it's a good starter book for those looking to make a career change.

4 out of 5 stars To question your careeer, this is a must read.......2002-03-01

Get control of your career and your expectations of what career means in your life. This book does a great job of guiding you along as you question where you are in life and where you want to be. Redundant at times and interactive "take control books" usually don't appeal to me, but this one is an expection.

5 out of 5 stars Davey is a great guy.......2001-12-18

Davey is a great guy. He rides his bike all over Seattle. He wears really cool glasses too. I'm honored to be mentioned in the book. Dave is a great writer and philosopher. Everyone should buy this book and give copies of it as gifts to their friends.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read To Make Better Life Choices!.......2001-11-24

A must read in making choices along your career journey to find your calling. Based on John Holland's Theory, this is a very useful book to help laypersons' to apply the Theory in a most practical and meaningful way to find their calling. Most importantly, the authors share not only their personal experiences but also include the experiences of a number of individuals. In career planning and strategizing, this is very helpful. It is having others share their experiences and this gives a better grasp of the issues so that career choices can be made wisely. This ultimately will lead you to what you are destined to do. A useful complementary reading to the perrenial favourite, What Colour Is Your Parachute. In fact, Richard Bolles' comment about the book is, "I love it"! Need I say more for endorsements?

                                          Book Description

Since the works of Gerald Massey and Carl Jung, no other book has penetrated the world of symbolism like Ridley's Symbolism Revisited: Notes on the Symptomatic Thought Process. Ridley transcends Massey and Jung by offering the symptomatic thought process as an alternative to symbolic thinking. This book will radically change the way we [see] every academic discipline and will [force] us to take a look at our behavior patterns. Symbolism Revisited: Notes on the Symptomatic Thought Process is the second of a trilogy, the first being An African Answer: The Key to Global Productivity. The last book in the trilogy will be titled The Symptomatic Thought Process: Changing the Structure of Civilization. This book, Symbolism Revisited: Notes on the Symptomatic Thought Process, is a definitive departure point for all works on symbolism and mythology.

He has the idea (The Symptomatic Thought Process) but no idea on how to implement it. This book is repetitive and repeats nothing over and over again. I'll repeat this, "Save your money"!

                                          Book Description

Television talk shows are a recent phenomenon, but their roots go back to the itinerant circuses and religious revivals of the nineteenth century. Circuses made their money by displaying "freaks," just as talk shows emphasize only the deviant aspects of their guests' lives. And like the revivalists of old, talk show hosts attempt to convert their guests to a religion that has the power to heal. Guests who have been victimized give witness to the pain and suffering they have endured at the hands of their victimizers. Salvational talk shows build to a moment of conversion, when victimizers see the error of their ways and choose to convert. The hosts, victims, and relationship experts each play their part in the conversion drama that unfolds daily over the airways. This book questions the religion of recovery, examining the consequences for public discourse about social problems if talk shows continue to psychologize the social. At the turn of the millennium, Americans need to be able to discuss poverty or discrimination without simply blaming their victims. Salvational talk shows, which espouse the religion of recovery, make such a public discourse difficult.

I found this book to be a fairly decent book to learn both Java and GUI programming with though some of the GUI code would not work for me. Even so, I like the book.

This is probably the best book for beginners in Java. It is equally good for experienced programmers as a reference.

The book is written in clear and easy to understand language. There are tons of examples to explain the concepts. The book has good coverage of swing and UI programming.

4 out of 5 stars not so good for Java beginner.......2007-03-30

Before buying this book, I finished reading a book called Java, A beginner's guide (by Herbert Schildt). However, I found it kind of hard to understand Core Java2 Volume 1, because there are some terminologies/syntax used in the first a few chapters, and these terminologies/syntax are introduced in the later chapters, which made me feel hard. Also, I didn't come from C++ background, so the C++ notes in this book is not appropriate to me at all. I don't know any C++!
