Really disgusting fun for kids and adults!.......2007-10-02
Haven't you always wanted to have a truly encyclopedic knowledge of the absolutely revoltingly disgusting facts of life? Well, the most hilarious but well-researched facts are now available to you regarding pimples, poop, farts, burps, hairy ears, maggots, etc., thanks to Joy Masoff's Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Nasty.
I can't honestly vouch for the fact that the book covered absolutely everything as the author claims, but it's really hard to imagine what she might have left out. There's some serious research presented here, along with a lot of laughs! Don't miss out on this book!
Really Cool Book!!!!.......2007-09-25
This book is really cool! I bought it for my 10 year old son for his birthday. I know he will read it cover to cover and relay all the 'gross and disgusting' facts to us while we are eating dinner!!!! A really neat concept for kids! Gets them interested in reading while learning some unknown, gross facts! Recommended...even interesting for adults too!
Education with a Twist.......2007-07-02
What a great book! My 8 year old was spellbound with it and he got an education along with it, and didn't even realize. Even I learned a thing or two, as well. Easy reading and so informative, great for "kids of ALL ages".
Excellent for keeping boys busy.......2007-05-12
This is an ideal book. I bought the book to keep my two nephews occupied during my daughters wedding. This book kept them quietly entertained and amused with whispered "look at this" giggles. It would be a great book for a boy of 8 - 14 yrs old.
awesome book.......2007-02-27
i bought this and the oh, yikes book as gifts for a friend of ours who was turning 7. my daughter (11) wouldn't get her nose out of this one long enough for me to give it away!! she loves it and is constantly reading little blurbs to us from it. great book for huge age range.

Book Description
Population ageing is an important trend which will be experienced in industrialized countries in the early years of the next century. This significant book examines aspects of population ageing and pensions, with an emphasis on the design and use of simple economic models to focus on particular aspects of a very broad problem. The analysis of pensions presents many complex problems. A major aim of this book is to demonstrate how reasonably simple economic models can be designed and used to shed some light on the issues involved in population growth and pension provision. The basic analytics of population growth and pension structure are first explored. Projections for Australia are examined and used to model ageing and social expenditure and to estimate the 'burden' of aged care on future workers. The author goes on to investigate pensions and pension finance, and examines several types of economic models before turning to the analysis of alternative pension arrangements using a lifetime simulation model. The results of the study suggest that both lower contribution rates and a universal pension encourage a later retirement age. This book will prove invaluable to students and scholars of public sector economics, welfare economics, social economics and public finance.

Book Description
In this book the author considers non-traditional methods and technologies to calculate the results of the Internet sphere - GDP, NDP, NI. The author suggests including the assimilated resource of spare time of the Internet visitors into the Internet services. This specific resource enters the general stream of resources of the Internet sphere, introducing a certain specificity into economic estimations. Till now this resource has not been taken into account because of an absence of the necessary theoretical bases - the integral economic theory of this sphere. This book will be interesting to all those who use Internet values and Internet services, economists or those in any other related professions. For a more profound understanding of the trafficking of resources in the Internet sphere the author offers to consideration another two books: The Internet Economy (with complex numbers). Economic Indicators of Internet (with complex numbers - quaternions).

Book Description
Like many of his generation, Bill Bryson backpacked across Europe in the early seventies -- in search of enlightenment, beer, and women. Twenty years later he decided to retrace the journey he undertook in the halcyon days of his youth. The result is Neither Here Nor There, an affectionate and riotously funny pilgrimage from the frozen wastes of Scandinavia to the chaotic tumult of Istanbul, with stops along the way in Europe's most diverting and historic locales. Customer Reviews:
Very funny, but missing the "fun".......2007-09-24
Bill Bryson's humor is, as always, top-flight. One reviewer mentioned a series of jokes that he found "tiring" ... personally I found the caricatures very funny. Of course Bryson's comments are generalizations, many of them over-generalizations for humor's sake, many of them are grossly inaccurate I am sure. But the reality is that we *all* generalize, and while I understand the European point of view, I would ask the critics of this book who cry xenophobia to think about all of the over-generalizations Europeans have of America and Americans. But hey, we're all entitled to our own opinion, and humor perhaps more than anything is something that is lost in translation. I don't think the European audience is the one Bryson is targeting anyway, and I'm sure there exist many books in Europe that lampoon America to a degree that most Americans would similarly take offense at. C'est la vie.
While the humor itself rates 5 stars, the "travel" part is 3~4 stars at best. I do agree with the critics that note Bryson's somewhat formulaic style becomes a little weary after a while, and aside from the funny stories and interludes, Bryson's travels are actually on the dull side. In many ways, it felt like a sequel that was a watered down version of the original--I wondered if Bryson wouldn't have been better off writing about just his *original* youthful travels around Europe with Katz instead of this version we had--Europe: Part Deux. Bryson himself seemed to lose interest in his own travels around Italy, and often it felt like he was more interested to leave the last town than to enter the next one. By Istanbul, Bryson was clearly just going through the motions. Bryson's general lack of attachment to these places keeps the reader at arm's length as well.
In the end, I think the reader's opinion of this book will depend on how the humor is received. If you don't find it funny, this book will be a miserable read. For me, and I believe most people, the humor is hilarious enough and the flashbacks are interesting enough to carry the reader's interest from beginning to end. Still, I agree with those who say it does not match the level of Bryson's other works. The style remains but this book is missing a bit of the soul that makes Bryson's works such interesting and entertaining reads.
A gem for travelers, or travel-wannabes.......2007-06-27
It helps to already be a Bryson fan, but if you are new to the joys of reading his books, settle in, and enjoy. Bryson has been an outsider himself, having lived in England for many years. He moved back to the USA after two decades, tried it for a while, and moved back to England. He knows about being a stranger in a strange land. When he makes observation on the eccentricities, endearing qualities, advantages, and frustrating foibles of the places he visits (including those in the USA), he does it with humor, intelligence, a satirical bent, a very precise eye,insight--and did I say, humor? You will laugh out loud at least once. The paperback is inexpensive, the enjoyment immense.
The perenially likeable Bryson does it again.......2007-06-03
An account of the author's rambles across Europe. Bryson is always entertaining, and his writing alternates from downright hilarious to the point of absurdity to dealing with some very sobering statistics. This is a wonderful mix and he's a very gifted writer whose works sound like a really great story you once heard from a friend.
Neither Here Nor There: Travels in Europe.......2007-06-01
Having been in a few places in Europe, I can relate to what Bill Bryson is talking about. But if I had never been, I still could relate. His humour, the way he has of connecting past musings with his present surroundings is skillful and funny. I sit by myself and giggle at the way he takes a thought and stretches it like PlaDoh into a ridiculous mental play with him playing the star fool. He does not spare himself and he does not disappoint. We are entirely there with him. A wonderful read.
A Xenophobic Traveler's Story.......2007-02-03
I have enjoyed several of Bryson's books in the past so finally got around to this tour of Europe; I'm sorry I did. This is like one man's mid-life crisis dream of re-living an adolescent fantasy journey, with little real thought about the people in the places he visits. Sources for drink--often LOTS of drink--and the occasional museum are the primary focus of his entire journey, and the xenophobic comments that pass for humor here get very old very quickly.
Probably the saddest part of the entire book was being reminded that less than 20 years ago, he could visit Sarajevo and watch families playing quietly in a park. For anyone like me who is just now considering reading this, don't. There are far better, more current travel books and far better Bryson books out there, so do yourself a favor and skip this one.

High-Minded and Low-Down: Music in the Lives of Americans, 1800-1861
Nicholas E. Tawa
Manufacturer: Northeastern
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Paperback
ASIN: 1555534422 |
Book Description
From America's beginnings, our homes, churches, and public spaces have resounded with music. A preeminent musicologist now explores the relevance of music to Americans during the country's formative years, from the dawn of the nineteenth century to the Civil War.
Rather than reexamining composers or musical compositions, Nicholas E. Tawa focuses instead on the cultural interests and values of antebellum Americans-men and women, white and black, wealthy and poor, educated and uneducated, sophisticated and uncultivated-to show how their tastes in music reflected their times. By looking back at how people thought about music, what they expected of it, how they acquired it, and how they employed it in their daily activities, Tawa seeks to determine how music enriched their lives and helped establish the national identity.
Distilling thirty years of research in a vast array of primary sources, Tawa depicts scenes of domesticity and worship, wooing and recreation, toil and travel, illustrating how the music of a citizenry struggling to define its government evolved from ordinary, everyday experiences. His book re-creates the spirit that helped bind a young nation together and holds up a new and valuable mirror to early American musical life and society.

Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-01-09
I learned alot from this book. I would recommend this book to anyone who was interested in web design and development.
Not Impressed.......2006-08-24
I am VERY disappointed with this book. It was the required reading for a barnesandnoble.com online class, so I mistakenly figured it would be a good book.
I can handle all the typos and grammatical errors, for example;
"...how to add dynamic content o your Web page..."
"To perform tasks in t his book,..."
"Changing the color and font enables you to emphasize important information or to make your Web pages more aesthetically pleasing or more readability."
However, in many instances, the code in the examples has errors too! I don't know how anyone who is trying to learn HTML, CSS, or XHTML without prior knowledge could learn from this book.
That being said, I do like the layout of the book and the numerous examples and pictures. If the editing department had done their job, this might actually be a good book.
HTML: Your Visual Blueprint.......2006-08-04
This book has good information, but is poorly organized. The "lessons" are not organized in a logical way.
Plus, the text itself has grammatical errors and the illustrations show Web sites with laughably bad errors. For instance, "We takes the risk out of buying . . ." And "Directors Marketinging Book."
Could have done so much better........2005-07-18
I bought this book because I wanted to learn CSS and, apart from this being the only book in my local store that covered CSS, I thought learning HTML and XHTML would be a bonus. The fact that the book covers the whole lot is a very good idea, the execution, however, leaves much to be desired.
I am currently up to page 88, so this is not a review of the entire book, but I felt so strongly about warning people I had to write now. I am already looking on Amazon for alternatives.
1. Errors: There are errors in the text and the images, some more serious than others, that can leave you confused and scrambling around various resources for answers.
2. The visual style is the only saving grace behind this book, because it's only through the pictures that I can understand what's going on. The copy itself is like reading a bad technical manual.
4. The approach seems utterly uncohesive and at no point do you actually feel you're progressing towards building anything. Each page reads as if they took their appendices and simply explained them, rather than building up a more profound understanding of what is essentially learning a new language.
This series of books has some very good consumer feedback, and I am sure other titles are very good, because the idea behind the format is essentially a sound one, but it really looks as if a minimum of thought and care went into producing this one and I cannot recommend it to anyone.

buy this now!!!.......2004-07-24
As a newcomer to html this book allowed me to learn most basic html functions in about a week. the format of "here is the code=here is what happens" allows this beginner text to become an excellent resource for writing in html. visit http://www.htmlgoodies.com for extra help in this area. if you are logically-oriented then this book is excellent. only problem is : not in total compliance with the w3c standards (which take about 10 minutes to comply with...nest properly!!!). bar none the best i have seen.

Great book for beginners!.......2004-07-07
I absolutely love this book. I learn best in a hands on environment but being able to see all the pictures they provided worked just as well. I actually got this book to go with a class I took with BNU online and have loved it all. Each topic is only a few pages long and it's easy to reference when you just need a quick peek to refresh your memory. I love the fact that the book gets right to the point and doesn't waste my time with fluff and information I'm not really interested in. This is a great book for beginners and perfect if you want to learn the basics to creating your own web page. I already have one for myself and am now going to have the opportunity to create two for friends who are going into business. Definately worth every penny.
Wonderful start to learn HTML.......2003-10-23
I have been working with HTML for nearly four years, but to teach it to a beginner is often mind boggling for it is like learning another language - worse, it is code and tags not words for people to relate to, for it is often intimidating to people wanting to learn but are floored when they first start.
This is THE book for people starting out. It covers all aspects in easy to understand terms, the directions are simply, clear step-by-step with screen shots, so you can see precisely what they are taking about.
Comes with a CD ROM as well. You will be creating web pages in no time at all and keep this to repeatedly refer to as you grow in skill.
This is a GREAT book.......2003-09-29
This book is extremely well organized. In fact, this book is so well constructed that it works perfectly as both a learning guide and a reference manual, later on. Each chapter is a single topic and only 1 to 3 pages in length. All topics are illustrated with examples. The examples are explained with the appropriate portions of the example text circled, so there is no confusion as to what the author is referring to. In the vast wasteland of computer books, this one stands out as how it should be done!
Great book if you want to learn HTML!.......2003-04-28
I love this book! I learned all my basic html from this and the easier version Creating Web Pages with HTML Simplified.
If you want a good reference book buy this. The book shows how to use the HTML tags and includes a table of all the known HTML tags of when the book was published. Also covers style sheets and how to use them in an HTML page.
