Bewildering.......2002-01-05

The author's episode by episode analysis is excellent. But the rest of the book is irrational. The author obviously was very disappointed in the last two seasons of Babylon 5, but his ravings outside the synopses make no sense, and clearly conflict with what he wrote in the synopses. When the author of a book can't agree with himself, there's a problem. It's unfortunate that there will never be a true sequel to the author's first volume of The Babylon File, which was excellent.

Certainly the book is overpriced and Andy Lane wears his bias on his sleeve.

On the other hand I concur entirely with the opinions expressed, especially over the hanging plotlines, some of which had been dangling for two and a half years. Moroever, the book at least challenges the official opinion and is a welcome breath of fresh air for that.

Synopses good...the rest sux.......2000-10-10

The synopses of the episodes were about all that were good about this book. A few reviews were ok, but most were horribly unfair to B5. Ok, so season 5 wasn't the best and was a little slow in the beginning, but it kept getting better. ANd now that I watch them again, they are even better. This is a serious disservice to B5 and I reccomend wholeheartedly against buying it.

I loved The Babylon file, but the second volume was a dissapointment. It's cynical, it gives me the impression that the author hates Babylon 5, it seems to say "This is what I think, and I don't care what you think, because I'm right", and parts are just proven wrong by the episodes. This is not the same quality of writing from the first book.

Hell hath no fury like a bitter fanboy.......1999-12-10

It's okay for anyone not to like something and say so. What's NOT okay is to skew the facts in order to represent your opinion as fact. The book is full of misrepresentations and situations where unrelated events are put together to make them look as if they have something to do with each other. He goes over the so-called he said/she said thing about why Claudia left the show totally ignoring that Claudia came out and SAID IN PRINT THAT SHE QUIT FOR MONEY long before this book was finished. But that's inconvenient for his thesis so he ignores it. Because the fifth season didn't go the way he wanted it to, the way he thought it SHOULD have gone, he turns into a bitter fanboy and spews a tantrum in print, which is a loathsome and despicable thing for any so-called journalist to do. A reviewer should review the show that IS, not the show that HE would have made. As such, this book is entirely worthless and offensive, full of bad information, misinformation, skewed reporting, false premises and bile. An utter waste of time.

excellent guide to an excellent series.......2000-07-14

As a fan of many tv scifi series, I am usually skeptical of unauthorized guides. They typically contain little behind the scenes information and are often riddled with factual errors. However, this one makes for a fun read and is crammed with trivia, minutiae and all sorts of wonderful details for the avid b5 nitpicker. My only complaint is that, because it was written before the 4th season had concluded, some of the speculation on the arc and certain of the series' many signs and portents now seems superfluous. If you want a guide you can page through while sitting in front of your tv, this one has everything.

Don't waste your money on this........1999-08-08

It's breaks no new ground. Instead, view the pages of The Lurker's Guide -- It's online, it's free, it's more comprehensive, doesn't contain as many errors, and doesn't set an agenda like this book does.

The author says B5 is a great presentation, but 'disses' JMS and the series every chance he gets. I notice Lane is a SF writer himself -- maybe he is jealous of the world that JMS created and that he didn't think of something as good.

There is a supplemental book that covers the episodes not contained in the first book. I bought both of them at the same time. Wish I had bought and read the first book first, then decided whether to buy the second. I wouldn't have bought the second.

The only redeeming thing in this book is the section "Ivanova's Life Lessons".

An all around treasure for any Babylon 5 fan........1999-04-13

I believe that this book is a book for anyone. If you're just starting to watch the show, or if you have been a fan from the begining, this has fun facts for all. However, there are a few mistakes in the episode descriptions, but that's it. It is a book that has a purpose, to enlighten any B5 fan with new facts, and a different outlook on the arc.

This book gives you summaries of episodes divided by plotline, plot A, B, C. It also gives you the Koshisms of that episode! Tells you what, if anything, concerned the arc in that episode. Only problem, doens't go through all seasons. I literally couldn't put this book down!

A great Babylon 5 "Beginning of season 4" Reference Book.......1999-01-19

Against:
Reference only until the beginning of the 4th season. It was up to date when released but now a new version should be writed.
It has some episodes number quotations wrong but its not any problem for a B5 fan reader and the others will not notice.

For:
Do you want to know the name off all ships that appear in the episodes ?
Do you want to cross check episodes ?
"Koshtations" and the Yvanova "life lessons" are a must read.
It focus not only the good parts of the serie but also the "bugs" it had (That's why is "Unauthorised")

Take a look at the other reviews listed here and you'll notice a common thread - most are from Hollywood and internet insiders with strong opinions about the movers and shakers leading the merger of traditional content and broadband media. This book touches a nerve because it really does provide insight into the games that were/are played. Clearly, the authors know what they are talking about, and this is a solid read. I highly recommend it.

Interesting Read.......1999-09-17

I was fortunate enough to work for both Greer and Zakarin so it was very interesting to hear an outsiders take on the people and events.

That being said, I do feel that the book could have had more depth. Being there, I can attest to the fact that some of the issues were glossed over and approached in a somewhat naive manner.

Despite my critisism I do recommend giving it a read. For those who were not a part of the industry it is an interesting look into this fast paced world and even for those who were part of the industry I think it puts some of the personalities into context.

As for the disgruntaled former Asylum employee . . . well like the others have already said, Scott treated people fairly. The fact that your review of the book turned into a personal attack on the people in it probably says a lot about why you have these feelings in the first place.

Zakarin's character isn't the issue here........1999-09-14

Scott always seemed like a great guy to me, but that's not the issue here. (Or at least, it shouldn't be.) The point is that Digital Babylon is so gosh-wow gee-whiz breathless about his supposed vision that it obscures the story of the business, which is what this book purports to tell.

Digital Bablyon dawdles on the "glory" days of The Spot, dithers nervously over the transitional period -- "Will Scott get a new job? Oh, god, WILL HE???" -- then lovingly fails to describe the early days at the Asylum, preferring personalities to strategies and eulogy to technology.

Then it talks about launch, then it mentions in passing that EA was squandering $400,000 a month, then -- zip! -- everyone's fired. And the authors have the colossal naivete to sound shocked about it.

On the plus side, this is a really nice book to read for anyone who personally likes Scott, Troy, Rich, Charlie Fink or Brandon Tartikoff. It says nice things about them. It will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Heck, I like many of those people myself and I enjoyed their characterizations... particularly Charlie, who is ANYBODY's definition of a character.

But if you're looking for the real story of how "the geeks, the suits, and the ponytails" brought Hollywood to the Internet, this book won't tell you how. It'll only tell you who.

Hi! I'm the wife of Scott Zakarin and am even mentioned in this book. I found this book to be a very intriguing read and even though I knew my husband's story it was so interesting to see how everybody else's in the industry was woven together. I highly recommend it. On a side note, I read the post from a former employee. And, while I wasn't in the office on a daily basis I do know my husband's character; he is an honest and fair man and treats people with the same respect that is shown to him.

I was one of the early spotfans - and was blown away by what Scott Zakarin created for the internet and entertainment. My association with him has always been a positive - he always answered my emails and telephone calls and invited me down to the office whenever I was in time. It has been incredible to follow this man's career. Read the book!

I think everyone who has been married should have a chance to read this book. It is so easy to read, so encouraging and to the point. The authors are fantastic. Because of what I have read in this book I have changed, on my own and in a very positive way. My spouse and I talked, and are going through marriage counseling. Something we would not have done if I had not read this book.

A Very Helpful Book on Dealing with Marriage Problems.......2000-03-25

I've read a number of self-help books on marriage, and this is the best by far. The "Dummies"-style organization makes the book extremely user-friendly. I can find useful information on just about any aspect of marriage--whether it's dealing with in-laws, disputes over money, love-making issues, or dividing up household chores.

Drs. Sue and Steve Simring are not only experts on the subject of marriage and skilled writers. They also bring the in-the-trenches wisdom of their own thirty year marriage to the table. Reading "Making Marriage Work For Dummies" gives me a real sense of what it takes to keep my relationship strong, and deal with problems as they come up.

Highly recommended!
