Book Description
"Fresh and funny… St. John has crafter a winner.” —
Tony Horwitz, author of Confederates in the Attic
In the life of every sports fan, there comes a moment of reckoning. It may happen when your team wins on a last-second field goal and you suddenly find yourself clenched in a loving embrace with a large hairy man you’ve never met. . . . Or in the long, hormonally depleted days after a loss, when you’re felled by a sensation similar to the one you first experienced following the death of a pet. At such moments the fan is forced to confront the question others—spouses, friends, children, and colleagues—have asked for years:
Why do I care?
What is it about sports that turns otherwise sane, rational people into raving lunatics? Why does winning compel people to tear down goalposts, and losing, to drown themselves in bad keg beer? In short, why do fans care?
In search of the answers to these questions, Warren St. John seeks out the roving community of RVers who follow the Alabama Crimson Tide from game to game across the South. A movable feast of Weber grills, Igloo coolers, and die-hard superstition, these are characters who arrive on Wednesday for Saturday’s game: Freeman and Betty Reese, who skipped their own daughter’s wedding because it coincided with a Bama game; Ray Pradat, the Episcopalian minister who watches the games on a television set beside his altar while performing weddings; John Ed (pronounced as three syllables, John Ay-ud), the wheeling and dealing ticket scalper whose access to good seats gives him power on par with the governor; and Paul Finebaum, the Anti-Fan, a wisecracking sports columnist and talk-radio host who makes his living mocking Alabama fans—and who has to live in a gated community for all the threats he receives in response.
In no time at all, St. John himself is drawn into the world of full-immersion fandom: he buys an RV (a $5,500 beater called The Hawg) and joins the caravan for a football season, chronicling the world of the extreme fan and learning that
in the shadow of the stadium, it can all begin to seem strangely normal.
Along the way, St. John takes readers on illuminating forays into the deep roots of humanity’s sports mania (did you know that tailgaters could be found in eighth-century Greece?), the psychology of crowds, and the surprising neuroscience behind the thrill of victory.
Reminiscent of
Confederates in the Attic and the works of Bill Bryson,
Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is not only a travel story, but a cultural anthropology of fans that goes a long way toward demystifying the universal urge to take sides and to win.

Roll Tide Roll.......2007-10-02
This is a must read for anyone with an interest in college football and in particular the Crimson Tide. It is a delight to read.
A worthy read.......2007-01-02
I am a college football fan and that helps when reading this book. I should say it is not completely necessary though. I found this book to be a interesting look at a sub culture of the sport I love. The book is fair and clear in presentation, no effort to hide the ugly part of this world, or sauce up the fun part. Mostly the book speaks about a interesting journey I wish I had the guts (and the time) to take.
I always measure a book by am I happy I bought it or do I wish I had gotten it out of the library. I am happy I bought this book, and you will be as well.
Football Frenzy.......2006-09-23
Warren St. John's Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer is a fascinating look at the fans of the University of Alabama's football team and particularly those who RV to the games. Anybody who is a college football fan will enjoy the book. Your level of enthusiasm for your team may not match that of the Crimson Tide RV folks, but the Tide fans are fun to read about. You will learn about Bama Bombs, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry, ticket brokering, and the world of the fans arriving at games days ahead of kickoff in the RVs. Read the book during football season and decide whether or not you would like to be part of the scene. Some will want to drive to Alabama and experience a game firsthand. Others will be horrified by the description of the whole experience. Give it a try.
Bama Tailgaters' must read.......2006-08-28
Fabulous book with a humerous slant -- my husband and I both enjoyed the book.
Great fun!.......2006-07-15
Even though I live in the Northwest, I've always viewed SEC football from afar and kind of admired their fanaticism. I didn't know they were this nuts until I read the book!
It's really a great read, St. John explores the Southern football culture through the life of RV traveling. Along the way he meets some great characters -- my favorite a gregarious ticket broker -- who view Alabama football as a religion and way of life. But through this fanaticism you see some real warm-hearted people (the chicken farmer, the South Carolina couple, the divorcee), who care about people as much as football. Yeah, there are some unsavory characters, too -- a couple racists -- but you'll find that anywhere in the country.
St. John does a marvelous job detailing his travels, the games, and his own internal struggle in questioning whether he's too much of a fanatic, also.
Thankfully he doesn't drone on, he keeps it to under 300 pages, a nice, fun, quick read. He doesn't pontificate on 'Bama football, nor condem those who are fanatics. He details a fun road existence through an Alabama football season.
Great fun for those who not only love football, but also enjoy reading about American cultures and society.

Book Description
In Making a Market, Jean Ensminger analyzes the process by which the market was introduced into the economy of a group of Kenyan pastoralists. Professor Ensminger employs new institutional economic analysis to assess the impact of new market institutions on production and distribution, with particular emphasis on the effect of institutions on decreasing transaction costs over time. This study traces the effects of increasing commercialization on the economic well-being of individual households, rich and poor alike, over considerable time and analyzes the process by which institutions themselves are transformed as a market economy develops. This case study points out the importance of understanding the roles of ideology and bargaining power--in addition to pure economic forces, such as changing relative prices--in shaping market institutions.

Hip, arty, intense- required reading for the post-literate.......2004-02-08
This book reprints the first three issues of RAW, the "comics magazine for damned intellectuals." It contains some of the classics of "New Wave" cartooning. Included is work by Spiegelman, Mouly, Moriarity, Mariscal, Tardi, Capelle, Kaz, Beyer, Burns, Munoz, Swarte, Griffith, Meulen, etc. It is a collection of cutting edge European and American material from the mid-seventies to the mid-eighties. The tone is intelligent, sophisticated, and existential (or is it nihilistic?) Visually, it is an eclectic feast for the eyes. It has been called a magazine of visual literature, and I personally think that this perfectly sums up RAW.
This is a large, oversized publication, softbound, mostly black and white, with full-color cover reproductions. Bound into the volume are Art Spielgelman's all-color comic, "Two-Fisted Painters", and Mark Beyer's "City of Terror" bubblegum cards.
If you like this book, then track down the three smaller format RAW reprint volumes published by Penguin.

From Lumberton to Charlotte.......2004-08-24
I have read the following books by or about Frank Zappa. In addition, this list constitutes a ranking of my assessment of the quality of these books.
1. THE REAL FRANK ZAPPA BOOK by Frank Zappa and Peter Occhioigrosso
2. MOTHER! THE FRANK ZAPPA STORY by Michael Gray
3. FRANK ZAPPA: THE NEGATIVE DIALECTICS OF POODLE PLAY
4. ELECTRIC DON QUIXOTE: THE DEFINITIVE STORY OF FRANK ZAPPA by Neil Slaven
5. NECESSITY IS... THE EARLY YEARS OF FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION by Billy James
6. COSMIK DEBRIS: THE COLLECTIVE HISTORY AND IMPROVISATIONS OF FRANK ZAPPA by Greg Russo
7. NO COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL: THE SAGA OF FRANK ZAPPA by David Walley
8. MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER by Patrice "Candy" Zappa
9. THEM OR US by Frank Zappa
10. UNDER THE SAME MOON by Suzannah Thana Harris
11. BEING FRANK: MY TIME WITH FRANK ZAPPA by Nigery Lennon
When I purchased MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER from Amazon, I thought the theme was a cute idea -- until I read the Preface. The Preface made the entire enterprise sound uncomfortably exploitive. I was particularly distressed when I noticed that Nigey Lennon wrote the Forward. I disliked her book entitled, BEING FRANK. I was deeply offended by Lennon's portrayal of Frank Zappa, and as a result didn't write a review of it. I feared that MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER was going down the same path. Fortunately, it didn't.
I brought MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER to keep my mind occupied on a plane trip from Lumberton, NC to Washington, DC via Charlotte, NC. I was able to complete the entire book (87 pages) within the Lumberon/Charlotte leg (20 to 30 minutes). Thus, this book isn't long enough to be a good plane book. Regardless, I genuinely enjoyed it.
MY BROTHER WAS A MOTHER offers some insight that others book about Frank Zappa do not. For example, I was intensely interested in reading about the conflictual relationship between son and father. Most of us who were reared in the 60's had the same experience with our parents. In one particular circumstance, Candy didn't offer adequate details. Rock history records Frank's arrest for producing an adult film. His dad bailed him out of jail. I wish that Candy would have developed a deeper insight into the dynamics of the father/son relationship. In the book she describes the contempt for each had for the other, but when the rubber hits the road, a good dad will come to the aid of his son. Later, the son will come to the aid of his dad. Even if the son is Frank Zappa! Candy should have addressed this incident in greater detail.
All and all, this is a worthy read and should be included into everyone's Frank Zappa library. Last word, I think my copy is autographed by the author. With a felt tip pen, "Candy" is inscribed on the over page. Is that possible?
Delirante.......2004-08-04
Not Zapped by me.......2003-04-19
I bought this book for my husband who is a Zappa fan. I have never been. Give me Peter, Paul and Mary......however, I did find that there is more to someone's life than a slanted version by someone out to make a buck. Pictures can show a thousand words as we all know, and this book is one of those. It is most interesting to find that not every book has to be 3 inches thick with words that mean nothing. I was able to visualize Frank, his family and his life. Though I know nothing of him or his family, I think I can see that he came from strong roots with a love a desire that did not stop his music or his lifestyle.
I am not here to judge him, the author, or anyone else, but to let others know that this is certainly a book well worth the money. As an avid reader of biographies and autobiographies I thank you for the format to express my opinion. Karen M
Finally - The Zappa Family Album!.......2003-04-18
At last, we finally get insight on what it was like growing up with Frank Zappa from the person most qualified to speak about it - his sister Patrice (Candy) Zappa. Since we all came from families, Candy generously shows us what her family looked like and how they lived. This human element is something that is lacking in books today. Sure, Candy talks about herself and her brother Frank, but that's what you would expect from a family-type book like this anyway. Hard-core fans will come away with something they didn't know about Frank Zappa, and almost all of the early photos of Frank have not been seen before. On the basis of that alone, it's worth far more than the cover price. The rest of it is the icing on the cake. Just as important, Candy is a very talented vocalist that can stand on her own. Great work and highly recomended.
TO GREAT FOR WORDS.......2003-04-09
I really enjoyed this book! I loved the way the suthor went in to the history of Frank's family. It was an enjoyable experience, I found out alot of things that I never knew about. I loved it from begining to the end. Candy, she is a star in her own right. I would advise everyone to pick this book up.

Arab Portrayal in Media.......1999-12-06
No doubt political correctness has gone too far in many cases. But in his book The TV Arab, Dr. Jack G. Shaheen describes his own two children's reaction to "bad Arabs" on TV and his attempt to assuage their concerns-telling them about notables like Danny Thomas, Paul Anka and others. Before you jump to the conclusion that Shaheen, himself the offspring of Lebanese immigrants, is hysterical, take a look at examples he cites in his well-documented book. And things haven't gotten any better since the book's publication in 1984. Indeed, it's worse as entertainment and news media continue to portray the Middle Easterner as terrorist and criminal-especially since the Gulf War. Shaheen does a brilliant job in showing the double standard that exists today between minorities that are "in" and those that are "out." The TV Arab is a quick and easy read for anyone looking for a primer on the subject. It's worth your time.

Book Description
A Violent World analyzes images on global CNN, Israeli IBA, and Palestinian PATV that contribute to how the current violence in the Middle East is framed. Nitzan Ben-Shaul draws from critical media theory and approaches out of cinema studies to examine how dominant ideologies are embedded in mainstream TV news. He focuses on the American elites' global ideology and the conflicting dominant national-peripheral ideologies of Israeli-Palestinian elites, and his in-depth study further offers a new model of analysis for contemporary television news.

Webmastering, though it's fast retreating from the bleeding edge it once occupied, is one of the last jack-of-all-trades job descriptions. A good Webmaster has to know something (quite a bit, actually) about computer networking, telephone services, software, database design and administration, user administration, electronic money transactions, and tons more. The job is not just about knowing HTML and being familiar with some graphics software. In essence, that's the point that Webmastering for Dummies drives home to its readers. This book doesn't go into much detail on any aspect of the job of the Webmaster--particularly the more-or-less autonomous kind that doesn't function as part of a larger corporate information-technology group--but it provides a good overview of the job, and a moderate amount of valuable information.
You'll probably want to read this book, or at least its individual chapters, straight through in the way you would read a novel. The plot here isn't much, but the authors like to describe their subjects in English, rather than with code examples or protocols you can follow on a keyboard. It's good reading, though it's sometimes muddled by digressions into Web sites with design budgets in excess of $500,000. People with budgets like that aren't going to be reading Dummies books to figure out how to set up their sites. You won't be disappointed if you're starting from zero, but expect to do further research. --David Wall
Topics covered: The varied skills that are part of the Webmaster's trade, including goals assessment, content accumulation, e-commerce engineering, service-provider interaction, and coding with HTML.

Excellent Book For Those Planning to Be An Expert.......2002-03-27
I am an MBA Graduate and always felt that I have very little knowledge of Web Site Planning & Development. After reading this book I found, it is so easy to be a successful Web Planning AND Development Expert. This book starts from very basics and moves up to very high professional level.
I would recommend this book (Webmastering For Dummies 2nd Edition, by Brenda Kienan)to all those who have interest in Web Planning and Development but couldn't do it because they thought it is impossible to do!
I enjoyed reading this book and feel this book has opened many new avenues in my professional life, I hope it will do the same for you too.
Real, practical advice.......2001-04-24
A co-worker recommended this book to me as a truly expert overview of managing a website. She couldn't have been more correct--I've been producing big-budget, high-volume websites for a couple of years, but this book gave me new insight into how other aspects of the website business work. Whether you're new at the job or you've been at it a while, and whether your job is as an all-around webmaster or as a specialist, I think you'll find this book interesting and useful.
Second Edition Is Available.......2001-03-08
The new, second edition of this book has updated coverage that includes content management, project management, better methodologies for planning a site's architecture, and expanded e-commerce coverage. See Webmastering For Dummies, Second Edition; published Decemeber 2000; ISBN: 076450777X.
Ok for beginners.......2000-03-31
This book is exactly for what its title suggests, "Dummies", really no depth at all, but if you are a beginner that really has no idea what is going on in all aspects of web design or webmastering, then I suggest you get it to get an idea of what is going on. Even after that however you will probably still need another beginner level book to help get you up to speed on some other more in depth issues that webmasters face.
