In the 1970s, the Keynesian orthodoxy in macroeconomics began to break down. In direct contrast to Keynesian recommendations of discretionary policy, models advocating laissez-faire came to the forefront of economic theory. Laissez-faire no longer stood as an exceptional policy endorsed for rare occurrences of market clearing; rather it became the policy standard. This book provides the definitive account of this watershed and traces the evolution of laissez-faire using the cases of its proponents, Frank Knight, Henry Simons, Friedrich von Hayek, Milton Friedman, James Buchanan and Robert Lucas.

By elucidating the pre-analytical framework of their writings, Sherryl Kasper accounts for the ideological influence of these pioneers on theoretical work, and illustrates that they played a primary role in founding the theoretical and philosophical use of rules as the basis of macroeconomic policy. A case study of the way in which interwar pluralism transcended to postwar neoclassicism is also featured.

The volume concludes that economists ultimately favored new classical economics due to the theoretical developments it incorporated, although at the same time, since Lucas uncritically adapted some of the ideas and tools of Friedman, an avenue for ideological influence remained.

Tracing the evolution of American macroeconomic theory from the 1930s to the 1980s, this book will appeal to those with an interest in macroeconomics and in the history of scholars associated with the Chicago School of economics.

Readable Economics about Rational Expectations.......2003-02-28

Dr. Kasper covers the contributions of economists who opposed Keynesian thought and achieved fame and fortune by it. The analysis of modern economics is sophisticated, yet sufficiently transparent that the whole book contains only two equations.

Generally chapters trace the development of the Chicago school of laissez-faire economics from Frank Knight's studies of risk and uncertainty to Robert Lucas' rational expectations. Each chapter gives a brief introduction to one economist: Knight, Simons, von Hayek, Friedman, Buchanan and Lucas, followed by a summary of his thought, his methodology, and his conclusions. Dr. Kasper takes seriously their intellectual development while pointing out their limitations as well.

While Dr. Kasper herself is an institutionalist economist, who is critical of mathematical legerdemain, she writes of these men sympathetically with literary flair.

Though the hardback edition is too expensive to use as a textbook, its readability for undergraduates to professionals makes me hope that it will appear soon in paperback.

Although this book has been out awhile, I was just recently made aware of it through the author's newspaper columns. It is hysterically funny, I laughed so hard at points that I had to put the book down. The best thing is, he has a new one coming out soon. Prepare yourselves to read something from Georgia's next great humorist.

Great Book! Laughed all the way through it both times........2001-06-04

I have read many Southern humorist books, and this one fits right in there with the best. These episodes of Ed Williams' life reminds me of the times I spend listening to guys and gals, young and old, telling their life experiences. If you enjoy sitting down after a great meal with friends, and reminiscing about the good-old-days, the funny-old-days, even if those good, funny old days were last week, then this book is for you. It is definitely a page turner.

After having read the reviews and and tuning into GPR's interview with the author I couldn't wait to get my copy of "Sex, Dead Dogs, and Me". I even sent a gift copy to my son. Unfortunately, the book wasn't worth the wait. I waited patiently for the belly laughing humor I was sure this book contained and all I received for my patience was a few chuckles.

Not only was they hype much better than the book but I found the editing (if there was any) to be very poor. As a reader I find it very frustrating to try and guess which word the author intended to use in a given sentence. This book was worse than a small town weekly newspaper for errors. In addition, I found the author's over use of asides and paragraph numbering to be even more frustrating.

Mr. Williams shows potential as a southern humorist but this book obviously went to print way too soon. I wish I had saved my money.

THE BEST OF SOUTHERN HUMOR!.......2007-05-23

I laughed until my sides hurt. Sex, Dead Dogs, And Me is thick with outstanding humor. It has it all. Ed writes about extremely funny stories from his youth such as good and bad kisses, workman's compensation for jock itch, the vapors, and the adultery business. If you love to laugh, you'll want this book for your collection. You get a truly all encompassing, across the board variety of wit.

My favorite is Ed's classic tale of stink perfume. It reminds me of my own prank-filled youth. I have read a lot of humorous books, and this ranks among the very best. Ed's writing style brings the stories to life. It was easy to visualize the characters and get attached to them. Fresh, entertaining and comical, I highly recommend it.

I will have to make one correction however. A Canadian girl's lips kiss better. Perhaps one day Ed will get to test that theory.

it was a great attempt for an unknown. After reading the reviews, I ordered this book. A few of the chapters were good but on the whole it was a disappointment. I could not recommend this book without feeling guilty.

I have never laughed as hard in my life (my roommate threatened to make me leave our room, then she read it and laughed more than I did). Ed, should you ever come to Oxford, let me know. A Gleason treasure trove:.......2005-10-09

I have known since I was sixteen that Gleason is the only way to go in terms of technique. (My high school and college teachers were both Mildred Andrews' students.)I found a second edition and several fourth editions here at Amazon.com in reasonable conditions, and most of them are very affordably priced. These are wonderful collector's items at real life prices - something not often found. I have seen a fourth edition before: it is in manuscript. I look forward to seeing my second edition!

Worth the Money.......2005-04-12

My organ instructor insisted I find this pricey book for my studies. I reluctantly ordered it, and I'm really glad I did. It is a comprehensive learning tool for any organist, useful exercises and great pieces are included.

I called every music store in my area and no one had this book, but Amazon did! I could have hunted for this book in stores forever. Save yourself the trouble and order it here.

This book is not for pianists who want a quick transition to the organ, but for serious students of the instrument. There are plenty of cheaper organ method books out there, but the Gleason is the best.

Absolutely the first book you should buy........2002-11-22

I have some experience playing the accordion, and when I decided to learn the keyboard, I flipped through several books and bought a couple of the cheaper ones. This one caught my eye from the beginning. ... .

Well, when I saw it here for such a low price I decided I couldn't resist and bought it. A week later I tore into it - and let me tell you, it's great. Some people may feel put off by its coverage of musical theory, but DON'T BE! Too many "teach yourself to play" books ignore the important theoretical side of music, and the author manages it in a very light and easy-to-follow way. This book is marvelous and if you do what he says and take it slow and steady and concentrate a little bit on what you're doing you'll find yourself very well on your way to a technical understanding of keyboard instruments by the time you're finished.

He also demystifies the "tech" behind keyboards and synthesizers, which I thought would never be possible. ;)
Although this section won't be useful to acoustic piano players, that doesn't mean you should pass it by. The "teach yourself" part alone is worth the full ... price tag on the back of the book.

In short: BUY IT! Don't waste your time with other books.

Greasemonkey users unite!.......2006-06-26

I've been playing with the extensions in Firefox for some time, and one of the more interesting ones is Greasemonkey, which allows you to alter websites on the client side to add functionality or to remove annoyances. The Greasemonkey language is very similar to JavaScript, so Ajax/JavaScript junkies can get a very quick grasp of the techniques in the book.

It does assume some familiarity with programming in general, so this is not something to jump into without any experience; however, it is a smooth ride, and having a good JavaScript book will make it very satisfying.

If you're looking for a book on how to actually get started with Greasemonkey *coding* this is a great book. Sure, there's a collection of basic intro info, but this is a how-to book for coders. That's not a bad thing, of course! And from a coding standpoint, it does a great job.

Bottom line... I'm hooked. I was vaguely aware of what Greasemonkey was, but I really hadn't taken the time to explore it. That time is now over. I had a chance to review a copy of Greasemonkey Hacks by Mark Pilgrim, and I don't think I'll look at web browsing the same again.

This is a typical O'Reilly Hacks title, where you have 100 tips and tricks on exploiting some technology or toy. In this volume, Mark Pilgrim shows how you can use the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox to completely change the way you interact with web pages. The first two tips show how to install Greasemonkey and how to install a Greasemonkey script that you either download or write yourself. From there, it's all over the board as far as what you can do with these script gems. Tired of dealing with URLs on a site that aren't clickable? Check out tip #13 (Turn Naked URLs into Hyperlinks). Want to have a web page refresh itself automatically every x minutes (even though they don't have a meta refresh tag)? Then go to tip #41 (Refresh Pages Automatically). And my favorite... Hate those web site registrations that force you to enter basic information every time just to see the content? Do you normally use BugMeNot to find an existing registration? Wish that all could be integrated and automated in your browser? Tip #84 - Bypass Annoying Site Registration. I can tell you that this one was the first Greasemonkey script I installed, and it's way cool...

This is really not a "how to code Greasemonkey scripts" book. You're dealing with JavaScript and the document object model, but Pilgrim and his group of contributors don't spend any time trying to teach you how to do all that. The book delivers the scripts already coded and tested, and you just have to install them. But that's not bad, and it works on a number of levels. If you've never used Greasemonkey, it's a great way to discover the power (as I did). And if you *are* a Greasemonkey user and/or developer, this will give you many new ideas on scripts you might want to write yourself. And since you can download the scripts from the O'Reilly site, you already have a solid base of code from which to start. Hard to beat that in terms of value...

Obviously, I like tech books and I read a lot. But not often do I run across a book that ends up changing the way I view the basic technology I touch every day. If I wasn't a Firefox user, this book would convince me to become one in short order. As a Firefox user, I'm now convinced that I can personalize and manipulate web sites and information in ways I never imaged. This is really a recommended read...

Should be Firefox Hacks.......2006-01-26

Really this should be Firefox Hacks since the book is primarily about how to use Greasemonkey to make the sites we all visit on a daily basis more usable. Greasemonkey allows you to write scripts that alter the behavior of websites from within the browser. If that sounds esoteric, ok, but just have a look around what you can actually do with it and you will see just how powerful it is. Greasemonkey is worth your time and this is the book that shows you how to exploit that power.
