5 out of 5 stars Best Web Service Tutorial I have ever seen.......2007-06-25

This book is really useful specially for a person who want to learn the basic of web service and then go deep for XML and Web Service usage in Service Oriented domain.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent roadmap.......2007-03-11

Thomas Erl covers SOA perfectly. The ebb and flow of the book is excellent. He does not cover proprietary technologies, and rightfully so. However, he explains the W3 standards of XML, SOAP, Web services and many key service models. He also is aware of corporate culture and thinking realistically as you take on a SOA implementation. This book has made me a better software developer. Keep things autonomous and keep things abstract.

1 out of 5 stars Advertising for Author's Business.......2007-01-08

I read this book as part of a technical book club at work. The concensus of the group is that there is very little useful information in it. It contains many diagrams and charts that provide little benefit other than to increase the page count. It contains mis-information concerning competing technologies such as CORBA and constantly treats SOA and Web Services as if they are interchangeable terms. Much of the information is superficial. The bright spot in the book was that the large number of nearly identical charts made reading the chapters go very quickly. Finally, the author often seems to be using the book as advertisment for his company. There are much better resources for gaining an understanding of SOA and Web Services. Don't waste you money on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Waste of verbatim.......2006-11-10

The entire book can be summed up on 3 to 4 pages. Mostly the book regurgitates the same concepts over and over to fill up the pages, using a plethora of technical terminology to abstract it's own meaningless. For the most part the book is intended to give you an overview of verity of technologies encapsulated in SOA architecture, but from a very distant perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book.......2006-10-31

Others have already told you how good this book is. I want to add my 2 cents by highlighting the last few chapters. Thomas gives you 2 chapters on best practices - chapter 12 for integrating XML in the enterprise, and chapter 13 for integrating web services in the enterprise. As noted in earlier reviews, Thomas provides pros and cons to several approaches. The key for us readers is to learn from past experience so we can avoid wasted effort - always a good thing. In chapter 14 you will find his Layered Scope Model (LSM) that you may have been looking for in your Internet searches. This book is highly recommended.

            Book Description

The fundamental elements to unlocking the potential of technology to speed up economic growth in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) are investing in education, opening up new technologies through foreign trade and investment, and encouraging private sector research and development. Closing the Gap in Education and Technology advises Latin American and Caribbean governments to address the region's deficits in skills and technology, and thereby boost productivity, ultimately improving growth prospects. To close this "productivity gap" in the region, the report calls for a range of policy approaches and strategies, depending on a country's level of development. It identifies three progressive stages in a country's technological evolution ? adoption, adaptation, and creation ? and observes that policies should be designed to address the particular challenges that accompany each stage. In conclusion, Closing the Gap in Education and Technology argues that many countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region have been improving education and social risk management systems so that they are now ready to benefit from the rewards associated with creating stronger trade and technology ties with countries that are more technologically advanced.

            Download Description

This report focuses not only on the gaps facing Latin America in both education and technology, but especially on the interactions between the two. The central premise of the report is that skills and technology interact in important ways, and this relationship is a fundamental reason for the large observed differences in productivity and incomes across countries. This report argues that skills upgrading technological change, and their interaction are major factors behind total factor productivity growth. Skill-biased technological change is indeed being transferred today at faster speeds to LAC countries, as elsewhere. Technological change has been complementary with skill levels in Latin America in the last two decades. It is further estimated that firms have substantially increased the demand for educated workers in the region, particularly workers with tertiary education. This technological transformation appears to be intimately related to patterns of integration in the world economy. Firms in sectors with higher exposure to trade are subject to more competitive pressures. Adopting and adapting more advanced technologies and hiring and training more educated workers is one way to respond to this pressure to become more productive. The increased potential demand for education offers the possibility to accelerate productivity growth in the economy by closing the educational and technological gaps that Latin American countries exhibit with respect to their peers.

2 out of 5 stars new book with NO ACCESS CODE.......2007-02-24

I ordered this book because it was cheaper then on other sites. I bought it new for the purpose of not having to buy an additional access code for my online class. Since when bought new the access code to WebCT should come in the new book. I received the book with no CD. So after all that, I still had to pay an additional fee for a code when it should have came with the book. A very big hassle. I called customer service and all they said they could do was send me another book if I returned the book I had purchased to them. That would be an 8 week turn around, and by that time I would have been half way through my class. So instead I had to purchases the code on my own. I will not buy books from Amazon again. There are other text book web sites that understand the demands of buying books for schools.

4 out of 5 stars Econ Text book.......2007-02-09

I found the text to be well written. Mr. Tucker is very thorough and yet concise in his layout of the chapters and it is very easy to read. The charts and graphs really illustrate what is being discussed and each section has a review section to reinforce what you have just read.

In 1968, wearing a flaming helmet and sacrilegious robes, Arthur Brown hit the number-one slot worldwide with his hit single "Fire." The English singer has rained a volcano of influence on pop culture ever since. From the legendary UFO club in London's psychedelic heyday, to working with Pink Floyd and the Pretty Things, Arthur Brown has an amazing story to tell.

                              Book Description

Veteran newsman Knowlton Nash has had a fifty-year love affair with the business of journalism. It’s a “beautiful business,” he says, but one headed for big trouble. In Trivia Pursuit, Nash explores the threats and challenges facing the news media today and tries to discern the direction it will take in the new century.

The news media are awash in sensationalism, as is clear from the lavish coverage given to every tiny detail of Princess Diana’s death and funeral, and the breathless and casually inaccurate news stories on President Clinton’s alleged extramarital sex life. In their efforts to entice new readers and viewers, much of the media are turning tawdry gossip into news; as Nash puts it, they are startling our eyeballs rather than engaging our minds. Squeezed out or reduced to the briefest glance by the superabundance of trivia are stories that have a direct bearing on how we conduct our lives and our public affairs.

Nash shows us that the news media have always struggled with the issue of whether their role is to inform or to entertain, yet the pendulum has never before swung so lopsidedly. The work of the journalist as gatekeeper, as the sorter of truth from lies and fact from innuendo, is crumbling before the competitive onslaught of the Internet, which allows gossip to travel the world as fast as fact, and of cable and satellite television, which threaten to disintegrate mass communication into “boutique journalism.”

Nash is no Cassandra, however. Soon, he believes, the pendulum will swing back. Soon the public will learn to navigate the new technologies to find thoughtful, well-presented, honest, “name-brand” news – the lifeblood of a democratic society. For regardless of whether it’s delivered by newspapers, television, or the Internet, there will always be a demand for quality news and an effective medium for delivering it.

5 out of 5 stars Sorry, I have to dissagree..........2004-06-13

I have to dissagree with all of the people who wrote negative things about this book. Though not everything is put in full detail, it has strategy. I read through the WHOLE book, front to back cover, and it has strategy. It will help you through the game. It lists every monster that you will face and how to beat the bonus levels, death routes, and gem paths. Also, the book includes an interview with Crash Bandicoot --just play along-- and the history of Crash in a story. I'm sorry if it didn't help those people, but it helped me, and I want to say that I thought it was a well written and basically good book. Keep in mind that sometimes you will have to use some brainwork.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than no help - Much of the info is WRONG!.......2004-03-05

Not only is this guide oddly unhelpful (telling the reader to "be careful" and "take it slow" at the difficult or confusing parts, but giving no directions at all on how to get through them), but much of the information it gives is just plain WRONG! It lists incorrect locations for several of the hidden gems, frequently gets the directions for the controls backward (telling you to "stay left" where you need to stay to the right, for instance), and simply gives the wrong advice on how to earn rewards (telling you to jump the gap to the red gem, for instance - which will only cause you to die - when in fact you need to shoot it with the bazooka). The run-throughs of several of the levels even put events in the wrong order or leave parts of the levels out entirely so that it is impossible to follow the guide. You will do your game more harm than good if you waste your money on this guide.

                                  1 out of 5 stars First official NON-strategy guide.......2003-11-05

I give this guide LESS than one star! I own several official strategy guides, many for the Crash Bandicoot games. This is NOT a strategy guide! I have made enough progress in this game and know the tough spots. After scanning this "strategy guide" I just recieved in the mail, I feel as if I have been ripped off! I did not need to spend my hard earned money on a strategy guide that tells me to simply 'take my time' in those tough spots. Shane Mooney owes anyone that purchased this book a full refund and an apology! To say that this one is of no help to the semi casual player is an understatement!

                                  4 out of 5 stars It's a strategy book........2003-05-18

What can I say, it's your typical strategy book but this time it's for the Wrath of Cortex. It is helpful, as most books are though my daughter has been able to figure out the game more without the book. If you feel you or your child (or child's friend, etc.), need just a little extra boost to try and help you with the game then it is a definate must. And if you happen to sell the game you have an added bonus to go along with it (the strategy book) to whomever you sell it to.

2 out of 5 stars Not much in here!.......2002-12-04

Other than a brief history lesson on the life and times of Crash Bandicoot and some nice artwork there's not much strategy in this book. I agree with the others wholeheartedly, this book is a waste of money unless you just collect strategy guides. It seems to always tell you which levels are hard but does nothing in the way of showing you any help. BradyGames books are usually better than this, I guess this one slipped under the radar. Use the FAQS on the net, they are free and offer WAY more help.
