This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black.

While I had already figured out alot of the authors tips for living, I must say that this book is enjoyable and I found her perspective delightful. A great soothing and enjoyable read.

4 out of 5 stars From a Unitarian Universalist.......2007-09-25

I love this book! I ordered it for my Mom as a pick me up. I think it's great to read something uplifting before bed. It is not a Christian devotional but it does have aspects that I think anyone can apply to their spiritual practice. This book can seem a tad like a giant Hallmark card but sometimes that's what you need, right?

5 out of 5 stars Makes You Think.......2004-09-09

In our stressful lives, Sarah Breathnach's calm voice outlines a path to sanity. She advocates nurturing our spirits, our relationships and creating serene spaces in our lives.
I want to play this over and over, so it soaks into my consciousness. I want to share this message with all the frazzled women I know. She blends literature and a variety of religions without being preachy. Quotes from Star Wars, Bhudda, Irish proverbs and Shaker writings are sprinkled throughout serving to launch her essays.
Over all, it is about tuning into ourselves and paying attention to our basic needs (no, not material possessions, though she does not advocate a spartan lifestyle).
For women who feel there is no time to tend to their inner needs and who find the daily demands at times overwhelming, I wholeheartedly recommend this.

              Book Description

Foreword by Ralph Nader. In Corporation Nation Derber addresses the unchecked power of today's corporations to shape the way we work, earn, buy, sell, and think-the very way we live. Huge, far-reaching mergers are now commonplace, downsizing is rampant, and our lines of communication, news and entertainment media, jobs, and savings are increasingly controlled by a handful of global-and unaccountable-conglomerates. We are, in effect, losing our financial and emotional security, depending more than ever on the whim of these corporations. But it doesn't have to be this way, as this book makes clear. Just as the original Populist movement of the nineteenth century helped dethrone the robber barons, Derber contends that a new, positive populism can help the U.S. workforce regain its self-control. Drawing on core sociological concepts and demonstrating the power of the sociological imagination, he calls for revisions in our corporate system, changes designed to keep corporations healthy while also making them answerable to the people. From rewriting corporate charters to altering consumer habits, Derber offers new aims for businesses and empowering strategies by which we all can make a difference.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Brilliant!.......2004-08-12

I don't give top ratings lightly, but this book is breathtakingly well written and carries a powerful message. Any given chapter is a great eye-opener to how our society works and what's REALLY going on in the world around us... with all the distractions stripped away.

Unlike Arianna Huffington's "Pigs at the Trough," which consists entirely of disjointed anecdotes on "what's bad," this book tackles the underlying reasons for WHY it's bad. Corporations have quietly and efficiently consolidated their economic muscle and merged it with political power--witness the everyday complaint that Special Interests hold sway in Washington. But as Derber shows, few are willing to make the obvious connection--that the problem is not simply government per se, but unrestrained corporate power.

And Derber is no hippie anti-capitalist wacko, either. He acknowledges that globalization is inevitable, but simply notes that we need to ensure it's the right KIND of globalization... the kind that's accountable to the public and that serves the public good. For all the conservative and libertarian whining about how the evil UN represents a "loss of U.S. sovereignty," notice that they never say a word about the WTO and similar business deals that have _already_ undermined our sovereignty, setting up arrangements that subordinate our laws to corporate profits--all with zero accountability to anyone but the executives and stockholders.

This books outlines real, practical solutions for putting the brakes on corporate power while still promoting economic growth and profitability. Environmentalists and unions don't HAVE to be at odds, not when they can unite against the common enemy and take positive action to force corporations into their proper, subordinate role to public government.

2 out of 5 stars Maybe good for beginners.......2004-06-23

If you haven't read any other critiques of corporate power, this isn't a bad introduction. It covers the basics adequately (deregulation, privatization, monopolies, anti-unionism), but you have to wade through prose like "The language of responsibility -- rather than accountability or democracy -- reflects the depoliticizing of a movement that claims to speak for empowerment." For more experienced readers, I would recommend "The Corporation" by Joel Bakan.

1 out of 5 stars Verbose unstructured rambling.......2002-11-12

The essence of the book is "corporations behave badly". I happen to agree but I don't need 339 pages to tell me this. I was hoping to learn something here. I was hoping for some history of how corporations developed. Nothing of the kind. Just a comparison to the gilded age (late 1800s) repeated throughout the book that is obvious to anyone who knows American history. Those liberals who love to read long winded tirades that support their point of view may enjoy this book. But if you aren't a liberal or if you are a liberal with a brain, this book will bore you to tears.

5 out of 5 stars An easy read that includes consumer responsibility........2002-09-22

This is a book that shoud be read by anyone who is in the least bit interested in global economic affairs, sweatshop-labor, and flight of capital.

Charles Derber gives an excellent description of the history of corporations within the United States and elsewhere as well as timeline leading into what they have become. He advocates careful legislation, but more importantly - grassroots activism. His solutions include educated consumerism, socially-responsible investing, and cooperation of non-profits.

This book is an easy read that doesn't require an MBA to understand - it should be required reading for political economics courses.

4 out of 5 stars Fine ideals, recommendations lack pragmatism.......2002-05-31

Derber, a sociology professor at Boston College, gives us a noble, yet futile effort to bring change to our overbearing corporate culture. He does a commendable job of describing the historical role of corporations, starting with their charter as entities that are beholden to public scrutiny and will and with finite lifespan through the sea change of the Gilded Age where the Rockefellers, Carnegies, Goulds and others forced the country to accept corporations as private enterprises that also had the protection given to individuals. Much of Derber's best work is describing how this took place and what the ramifications have been through today.
He also does a decent job of describing how corporate power has been consolidated and is now so powerful that it holds an ever increasing dominance on public policy. With behemoths such as GM, GE, Disney, Microsoft and others holding vast amounts of power, Derber argues that government has become an unbalanced lackey of private enterprise and no longer is a trusted countervailing force to the private sector. As a prime example, Derber points to the merger activity in media companies which compelled the FCC to relax ownership constraints on media companies and has effective consolidated media power in the hands of very few companies. He rightly asks the question, how does this effect the quality and balance of news and information that the public receives and is this a threat to our political, economic freedoms.
He speaks of the corrupting power of contributions to political campaigns and how the legal fiction of the corporation as a person has allowed companies to wield undue influence in our political process. Derber does not make a significant distinction between Democrats and Republicans, arguing that both have become suckled to the corporate dollar, thereby diminishing their role as independent keepers of the public gate.
While Derber sees some silver lining in efforts by companies such as Ben & Jerry's, Tom's of Maine and others to practice corporate responsibility and bring a different set of values to corporate decision making, he believes these efforts will essentially fail to create fundamental change due to the divisive influence of financial markets, globalism and other pressures on companies to produce short-term profit for shareholders. Indeed, while Derber sees large financial institutions and money managers as potential harbingers of change due to their large ownership stake in companies, he doesn't think they will provide the type of change necessary to force companies to take into account, social, regional, environmental and other issues when making decisions.
Derber spends the final third of the book describing his antidote to this issue, however, while he consciously tries to evade sounding utopian and idealistic, that is exactly how he sounds. He puts his faith in a movement called 'positive populism' which looks to change their fundamental values while at the same time selling this idea to a skeptical public who may look upon it as threatening their own livelihood and security. He believes four separate movements can come together, labor, the 'third sector' of volunteer-based organizations associated with community, church, clubs, neighborhoods, etc., women's and civil rights movements and finally, environmental organizations. By demonstrating to all four their common goals and by shifting emphasis in labor from one of narrowly-defined interests to one of a broader social context, he believes they can be a powerful countervailing force to the corporate giant. While noble in theory, Derber gives very little direction on how this can happen. It seems he wills it to happen more than anything. As mentioned earlier, Derber has put his finger on a bedrock issue in today's world, but his solution has more to do with slinging arrows at Goliath.

                Book Description

This book is an in-depth discussion of rising inequalities in the western world. It explores the extent to which rising inequalities are the mechanical consequence of changes in economic fundamentals (such as changes in technological or demographic parameters), and to what extent they are the contingent consequences of country-specific and time-specific changes in institutions. Both the 'fundamentalist' view and the 'institutionalist' view have some relevance. For instance, the decline of traditional manufacturing employment since the 1970s has been associated in every developed country with a rise of labor-market inequality (the inequality of labor earnings within the working-age population has gone up in all countries), which lends support to the fundamentalist view. But, on the other hand, everybody agrees that institutional differences (minimum wage, collective bargaining, tax and transfer policy, etc.) between Continental European countries and Anglo-Saxon countries explain why disposable income inequality trajectories have been so different in those two groups of countries during the 1980s-90s, which lends support to the institutionalist view. The chapters in this volume show the strength of both views. Through empirical evidence and new theoretical insights the contributors argue that institutions always play a crucial role in shaping inequalities, and sometimes preventing them, but that inequalities across age, sex, and skills often recur. From Sweden to Spain and Portugal, from Italy to Japan and the USA, the volume explores the diversity of the interplay between market forces and institutions.

The Eagles are the most popular, enduring rock band in America. With singles and albums hitting the top of the charts for a quarter century and a greatest hits collection that has sold more copies than any other recording in history, the Eagles have entered the pantheon of pop music. To the Limit is the unauthorized account of the group from its earliest years through the breakup, solo careers, and reunions.

Blending the country and folk music of the late sixties with the melodic seductiveness of Detroit-style roots rock, the Eagles brought a new sound to a stagnant music scene. Under the brilliant management of David Geffen, the Eagles projected a public image of unshakable camaraderie-embodied by the cerebral, brooding Don Henley and the intuitive, self-destructive Glenn Frey-bolstered by the gorgeous harmonies of their songs. Behind the scenes, however, there was another story.

At turns revealing, inspiring, funny, and shocking, To the Limit is the chronicle of a time, a place, and a group that succeeded in changing forever the world of popular music.

3 out of 5 stars 3 Stars Only Because There Are Few Other Books.......2006-03-31

There are just few Eagles bios out there, so for that reason I give this 3 stars. It gives an overview of the band's history, and has some interview material with Don Henley, Randy Meisner, and others. But no Glenn Frey interviews, other than quotes from other sources. The Eagles were notoriously secretive, so the secrets remain. Eliot makes you think you're getting secrets, with lots of semi-sleazy accounts about drugs and groupies. But it's the same old rock music thing, and it just makes you think the Eagles were taking advantage of being young, single, and successful. A lit more chilling is the way they allegedly dealt with some of their associates. But again, the way they dealt with former band members differs little from say, the Stones. There is coverage of their powerful managers, first David Geffen, then Irving Azoff. It goes into great detail about the band's business dealings, and why they've managed to keep a fair amount of the dollars they've generated while other bands have not. The failings of the book include the real reasons for the band's break-ups, which remain murky. Even more significantly, it doesn't really lead one to understand the complex relationship between Glenn Frey and Don Henley. That is "the heart of the matter," and Eliot either doesn't get it, or is not willing or able to explain it to the reader.

                  4 out of 5 stars I liked it!.......2005-01-04

Well I was skeptical throughout reading this book after the reviews and after I heard that Don Henley didn't like it. I kept an open mind but overall thoroughly enjoyed the book.

I agree with some other people who have said that it is very much focused on Don Henley followed closely by Glenn Frey and Timothy & Joe dont get the constant mentions nor do we learn about their lives like we do Don & Glenn's but that didn't bother me because Don Henley was the one I was most interested in. Another critical comment was the constant name dropping had me confused at points. If you aren't up to date with whos who, at times it can get a bit hectic. One early chapter I had to completely miss because I just couldn't keep up with all the different names and not knowing who they were referring to.

On a positive note, I learnt a lot and this book would be great for people who have admired The Eagles and their music but dont know a great deal about them as people. I thought it was a great read and gave an excellent overview of the yeras and didn't just concentrate one on period or anything.

2 out of 5 stars There was something in here untold?.......2004-11-24

File this book under "heard it all before". This book is little more than a Don Henley puff piece with a picture or two thrown in. Approximately a third of the book concerns itself with blbliography, the index, and what has to be the most incredibly overstated discography ever to grace a book of this type. Not only do you get an Eagles discography, but also one on each band member, INCLUDING any and all side projects they ever appeared on. There's very little new in here, in fact, there's very little in here at all, which leads one to believe that the Eagles were one of the most boring bands ever to survive to tiresome middle age. The only book I've read of this ilk that I consider worse is the Zep book by their former road manager. Do yourself a favor and do like I did, check this out of the library when you're sick, it's nasty out, and you'll be in bed anyway, only don't block off a large amount of time.

3 out of 5 stars Eagles soar despite biased writing.......2004-06-01

Having long been a fan of the Eagles, I was quite ready to read a biography of this splendid, though somewhat lacking Southern California band. Eliot does a fair job of presenting their history, but he lacks in descriptions about the making of the music, and he focuses too much on Don Henley. On one hand Eliot seemed to be fixated with Henley, and on the other hand he seemed to have an axe to grind with him. To The Limit really came off more as a Don Henley book, than an Eagles book.
For one thing there are too few quotes from Glenn Frey, who in my opinion really gave the band its heart. Just because Henley began singing almost half of the songs on the last two albums, doesn't mean he should have. I can think of several songs, that Glenn Frey could have sung just as well. I'd also like to have learned more about why Leadon and Meisner quit. Though Eliot did explain it in some detail, there was much missing. It would have been interesting to have heard from Glenn Frey on those issues, as well as from Leadon and Meisner.
The book is heavy in quotes from Henley, but short on quotes from any other band members. Much of the material seems to come from other previously published material, i.e. Rolling Stone reviews, interviews, articles, and much of it comes from Mansion On the Hill, a detracting book written in the early 90s which includes a section on Geffen and Azoff.
While is was interesting reading about Henley's take on Joe Walsh joining the band, I would have really liked reading about Joe's take on joining the band. In my opinion, Walsh's guitar playing saved the Eagles from fading into country-rock mediocraty.
I would have also liked to have learned more about Felder's role in the band. Learing about Felder's role in the song, Hotel California was really interesting, but it made me want to know more about Felder's and Walsh's guitar work. How did they work out strategies? How did they bounce ideas around? Did they feel left out of the inner-cirlce?
Nonetheless, I really enjoyed reading about the Eagles, and I'd like to read another book about them, though I'd really like for it to be less about Don Henley, and more about the Eagles.

                  1 out of 5 stars Unreadable.......2004-04-23

I am filing this "review" in the hopes of bringing down the average number of stars for this truly awful book. I love juicy rock bios, so I thought this would be just the book for me. Look how wrong you can be! The two main problems with this book are as follows:

                  1) It is unspeakably boring. I honestly couldn't even finish it; the grind just wore me down.

                  2) Factual errors. Others have already pointed this out, but it is especially galling to see George Grantham (the superb musician and singer from Poco) referred to as George Lantham. And how 'bout that gig in Hawthorne Beach? Where the heck is that? Somewhere between the City of Hawthorne and Hermosa Beach, perhaps. You get the idea . . . . It would drive you out of your mind if you weren't already bored out of your mind.

Perhaps the fact that Amazon has 62 used copies ("from $2.95") gives you the best indication of this book's overall merit. Proceed at your own risk.

                        Book Description

Observing the Rwandan cultural practice of gusimbuka, widely described as Tutsi high jumping, Europeans discerned a natural ability to jump and predicted that Tutsi would dominate world sports-or so the story goes. And, as John Bale makes clear in this book, it is just that-a story, a Western representation that recast cultural practice as competitive sport and made of the Tutsi high jumper an "imaginary athlete." Bale explores the colonial representation of gusimbuka, revealing the Tutsi sportsman and prospective Olympian as an invention with broad implications for understanding the workings of the Western gaze.

In written accounts and photographs, many published here for the first time, Bale uncovers a bewildering variety of images-evidence of the equivocal nature of the Western view of Rwandan body culture. Through a consideration of different, often conflicting rhetorical modes, Bale shows how these images were deployed to increase the cultural and political distance between Tutsi and Hutu, and to bring the Tutsi closer to the European. An intriguing and sobering case study, Imagined Olympians provides valuable insight into how the West both idealizes and vilifies the non-Western body.

John Bale is visiting professor of sports studies at Aarhus University, Denmark, and professor of sports geography at Keele University, U.K.

                          Book Description

The Soap Opera Paradigm is an engaging look at the pervasive use of daytime soap opera storytelling techniques in most television program genres, from prime time soap operas and reality shows to the nightly news, coverage of political campaigns, and sports programming. Drawing from a wealth of research, James Wittebols shows how programming techniques have changed over time and what roles media concentration and commercial influences have played in these changes. 2 out of 5 stars Too much technical and too little How to.......2006-04-20

If you know all the techie stuff, you will probably enjoy this book. But, if you are starting out Antony can leave you shaking your head.

For example, I needed to know about Key framing. I read his section where he discusses Interpolation, Auto Bezier, Continuous Bezier followed by Spatial Interpolation and Temporal Interpolation methods. He sure knows his stuff -- but after reading it carefully, my head is hurting and I still have no idea how to do some simple animation in my movie.

I understand that Premiere Elements 2 In a Snap is probably more suitable for me -- and for you if you have trouble with books that focus on concept over How To.

4 out of 5 stars Quick and Easy DV Editing for DVD, DV- or VHS-tape output.......2006-04-15

Author Anthony Bolante not only knows his subject well -- he is a video post-production professional, "a contributor to the Premiere Pro User Guide and Help system, as well as to the Adobe Certified Expert exam." - but he is also a professional technical writer who explains the terminology clearly and concisely.

This book is well organized : it starts by comparing Premiere Elements with Premiere Pro., describes system requirements, the program's user interface ("Workspace" etc.), and its video "Project" base; ways to capture video (including digitizing analog video and VHS tapes); how to remotely control a DV camera from the computer; how to add stills and manage video clips; how to edit, using the timeline, and add transitions between clips; how real-time preview works; how to add titles and special effects; and how to export to DVD or to DV or VHS tape.

I would have liked to have seen coverage of the extra functionality available if you buy the Photoshop Elements/Premiere Elements bundle - subjects like color correction, panning and zooming of stills, and slide shows.
I would also like to have seen expanded coverage of the different options when creating video for the web (the menu options for exporting to QuickTime or Windows Media are not covered).

However, compared with other books on Premiere Elements 2, this book seems to be good value for money.
It is a quick and easy introduction to the art of editing DV for output to DVD or to DV / VHS tape.
