    For their 50th anniversary, Sports Illustrated collects 52 of their best and most memorable articles. Editor Rob Fleder delivers on what makes the magazine standout and fashionable: a mix of on-sport reporting (Mark Kram's lyrical coverage of the third Ali-Frazier bout) and polished articles written with years of perspective (Dan Jenkins's examination of the 1960 US Open, 18 years after the golf tournament). SI's most well-know scribe, Frank Deford, bookends the collection with reflections on boxer Billy Conn and a lovely obit on hometown star Johnny Untias. There is a sweet array of noted authors including John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Pete Dexter, Don DeLillo, and Garrison Keillor. Profiles are the bulk of the book, but like the magazine, we take off-beat trails: a rattlesnake derby, articles on broadcasters, and Wallace Stegner's sobering "We Are Destroying Our National Parks" (written in 1955!). Since there has been other SI collections over the years (Yesterday in Sport one of note), fresher articles are more abundant (eight articles from the 21st Century). As with any survey book, one can be picky about the exclusions: no Olympic coverage; the only article on cars deals with the Autobahn; hockey is only represented through an ex-player's murder case. The biggest caveat is a book without pictures from a magazine famous for them. Certainly a single shot of Roger Bannister breaking the four-minute mile or one of the blurry photos that originally accompanied George Plimpton's ultimate April Fools' Day joke (pitching sensation Sidd Finch) would evoke the memory of those who read the articles upon their release. --Doug Thomas

        Book Description

        Free trade is politically dangerous. While most economists agree that it stimulates growth, governments fear that the producers who rely on trade protection can create devastating political backlash for administrations that promote global trade. In The Limits of Protectionism, Michael Lusztig describes exactly how governments can navigate the narrow path between economic success and political failure through the artful construction of free-trade coalitions. Illustrating his model with a wide range of case studies-from nineteenth-century Britain to Depression-era United States to contemporary New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, and Mexico-Lusztig reveals the successes, failures, and implications of a variety of trade strategies. He skillfully shows how protectionists can be pushed to restructure their businesses to compete in a global economy and can even become active advocates for the free-market opportunities they had once denounced.

          Having an excellent economics teacher is not enough, however, having an excellent prep book is!!

          After purchasing this book, I have no regrets and can say that this book goes into every detail that is vital for the test and also presents the material in a systematic, clear and consice way with enough examples not to confuse you.

          Plus, at the end of each section, there is a small review with all the important notes that are covered in th chapter and there are about 20-22 multiple choice practice questions with detailed answers, explicating each step. Also, there is a free response section which presents questions that can really challenge your mind and provide you with the confidence.

            Customer Reviews:

            3 out of 5 stars Maybe too thorough for AP Macro exam.......2003-05-19

            This review ONLY pertains to AP Macroeconomics: Compared to The Princeton Review's study guide from AP econimcs courses, Kaplan's is much longer, possibly too long. Each section is followed by review questions that, while not reflecting AP type questions, test your knowledge of the chapter. While doing these review questions, I noticed that they were far more detailed that what the AP test covers--very general macroeconomic concepts. With too many AP tests to prepare for, I dropped the Kaplan review after 2 or 3 chapters and picked up The Princeton Review's more concise study guide. TPR (The Princeton Review) offers a very good review with great practice exams (I didn't try Kaplan's exams). While taking the AP exam, I felt well prepared and very comfortable with the general concepts, as I did not encounter any detailed questions about economics concepts. As for the accuracy of my recollection, I'm writing this review three days after taking the Macro exam. In general, TPR is more concise than Kaplan, which is not to say one is better than the other, but time can become in issue during May testing. Also, FYI, I believe the Kaplan reviews from 'Apex Learning' are some kind of new edition(s); several AP teachers at my school recieved free copies for marketing/feedback purposes. In order to provide a helpful review, I'll try and remove any ambiguity by stating that I recommend TPR's AP Micro/Macroeconomics (5 stars) over Kaplan's.

            3 out of 5 stars Not the Best.......2003-05-11

            I bought this book to review for the AP Micro-Macro exams with little consideration of other options. I'd advise you to do otherwise, namely, to buy another book.

            To me, the review of concepts in this book seemed minmal. Although the book's cover says it includes 2 sample tests, it really only includes 1 -- 1 micro and 1 macro.

            It's not that Apex Learning's book is terrible, because it's not -- I just think that, after reading some of the reviews of the Princeton Review Economics book, I regretted buying this one.

            1 out of 5 stars Dads Say The Dumbest Things.......2006-07-01

            The book is not very funny because it's one liners that are taken out of context. Would not recommend the book to anyone.

            4 out of 5 stars Matthew's Little One.......2002-03-18

            Lansky and Jones have collected all the greatest lines dads have ever used to get kids to stop fighting in the the car, feed the pet, turn off the TV while doing homework, and get home before curfew. It includes winners such as: "What do you want a pet for-you've got a sister," and, "When I said 'feed the goldfish,' I didn't mean feed them to the cat." A fun gift for dad and the rest of the family, too.

                Book Description

                This is a fascinating glimpse into the often farcical, inner workings of a best-selling tabloid newspaper, and is a must-read for anyone interested in British social history and the media. As it celebrates its centenary, Chris Horrie casts an eye over the Daily Mirror's eventful history, from its first incarnation as a "newspaper for ladies" to the 1960s when it was riding high as the Beatles of the media world: anti-establishment, irreverant, sexy, and young. Then came the bitter 30-year circulation war with new arch-rival The Sun, and now, the tabloids desperately grapple for sales and many are forging links with the worlds of celebrity hype, New Labour politics, and cable TV.

                  3 out of 5 stars Not So Good.......2002-07-26

                  I love the Real World and I always try and buy the books that come out after the show has ended. I was disappointed with this one because it came out in the middle of the series and gave away stuff that happened in the latter part of the series. I know that it's not a movie, where the ending matters, but I was bummed to learn the Keri and Kyle ended up leaving on bad terms. After watching the show it made more sense to me, but while reading the book I learned that they weren't talking and didn't know if they could ever be friends again. I was bummed to get information from the book that I hadn't yet seen on the show. It seems like some of the earlier Real World books tell more secrets and off-camera stuff. Get it from the library!

                  4 out of 5 stars The greatest reality book ever!.......2002-07-09

                  Based on the popular show on MTV, it gives a great overview of the whole season. It gives behing the scenes facts about the show. Easy to read and if you didn't watch the show you could still learn so much about the cast and the show in general. Great read!

                  4 out of 5 stars Everything You Want.......2002-06-18

                  Dying for more details about what went down in the Chicago house? This book gives you everything you want and more! Along with many great pictures, the cast members talk about everything from adjusting to life in front of the cameras to fighting over the phone. If you've read previous Real World books and liked them, you'll find more of the same great inside dirt in this one.

                  5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-06-17

                  This book was the perfect addition to the Real World legacy. Its such a great show but even though MTV shows it about 600 hundred times you can't see and understand everypart of it so this book explains all the things that are completely over your head. It also gives further insight into the cast members' personalities that sometimes aren't shown in the confessionals.

                  2 out of 5 stars Too many basic mistakes.......2006-10-07

                  If you want to localize your website following advice from an author who:

                  1) Believes that people in Iran speak Arabic;
                  2) Thinks that the "circle" is an accent used in Czech;
                  3) Thinks that "Czechoslovakia" still exists;
                  4) Thinks that the word "flu" is not understood in the UK;
                  5) Thinks that Telugo is a more important language for website localization than Italian;
                  6) Thinks that Romansch is related to German;
                  7) Thinks that German capitalization is "more complicated than in English"

                  by all means go ahead.

                  4 out of 5 stars This book has gems.......2005-09-12

                  First of all - I love the books cover - but the watermarked immigration/customs stamps throughout the pages can be a bit distracting. And why page numbers are only given on odd numbered pages I have no idea.

                  This is the type of book where you read it and think - 'oh I know that already' but it really does help to have this as a reference when thinking about a multi language or culture website. Actually there are quite a few pointers that are great even if you're developing a site for just one language.

                  The book covers a range of audiences which is great - but some of the content doesn't become specific enough - want to have a definitive list of what browsers support unicode - check the index, there are 4 sections that have content on this but unfortunately not a single definitive reference.

                  It's a nice book to read - and for New Zealanders - we're not forgotten! Maori, and use of the Macron is mentioned, but not really discussed in great detail.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very good reference-- but lacking some essential details.......2003-03-20

                  Overall, this book to be very thoughtful, insightful, and well-organized.

                  The book is a helpful introduction-- and probably invaluable to someone who wants to get into the business-- but some of the hands- on was a little lacking.

                  However, it's really not geared towards those of who are decision makers at larger companies-- for example, Yunker praises the infrastructure underlying Fedex.com, but fails to mention the company that designed the infrastructure--OnlineFocus. Additionally, the ESPN comments lack any reference to Starwave's global reach and how that may have helped them design ESPN for diverse audiences.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great reference for website globalization projects.......2003-01-30

                  This is a solid reference book which can assist people who are planning multilingual website design and development projects. The case studies will definitely provide readers with good information from firms who have already created global websites, and the Hands-On chapters will benefit those who want to experience first hand some of the language issues you encounter when creating a multilingual web presence. I am with a firm who provides website globalization services and found Yunker's book to do a great job summarizing the issues.

                  5 out of 5 stars At last!.......2003-01-09

                  This is a fantastic book - a thoughtful and well written overview that has been needed for quite some time. I am very pleased to have it, and would recommend it to all types of people, both hands on practitioners, the curious, and to my recalcitrant clients who do not understand what about web globalization should cost money!
