Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING ARTISTRY!.......2005-02-11

The new "Star Trek: Ships of the Line" calendar features outstanding artist renderings of the ships that we have all come to know and respect. The two standouts are: "Tomorrow's Enterprise (NCC-1701-J)," and my personal favorite, "Fleet Museum." Any "Star Trek" fan will not want to miss owning this 2005 calendar! Grade: A+

3 out of 5 stars Amazing artwork, Too much NX-01, and strange date layout.......2005-01-16

The artwork, as always, is amazing. The 2-page spreads look great up close and 10 feet away. Like last year's Ships of the Line, this one features the NX-01 a bit too much.

My main reason for not giving it a 4 or 5 star rating is that the actual layout of the dates is non-standard! Instead of the standard five rows of seven days like every other calendar I've seen, the layout artist chose two rows of 15 or 16 days. This makes it a bit harder to glance at the calendar and see just what day "next Thursday" might be, forcing the viewer to scan along the line to find the day, labeled in a relatively small font.

1 out of 5 stars Too Much NX-01.......2004-12-07

With half the images being from the current flop show
'Enterprise', I'll have to take a pass on this one. A
better distribution of subjects would make this a 'must
have', instead it comes off as a cheap marketing ploy
for a miserable series.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing!.......2004-11-30

When I ordered this I figured it would be the standard fair, that is, the Calendar opens up vertically. Picture above the fold and calendar below. With standard pictures/artwork/renders of varies ships.
Well wasn't I amazed when this was not the case at all. The Calendar is horizontal. The artwork is amazing. It takes up the entire horizontal surface of the calendar. With the days placed strategically out of the way but very see-able. Also, there are dates for the casts of the shows also placed on the page. But the real highlight is the magnificent artwork. This is something to keep well after 2005 is long gone. I was actually stunned by the wonderful artwork and I couldn't help but crack a huge grin on the centerfold.
If you need a calendar to write on this is NOT the one to get, but if you want something beautiful to look at and enjoy while you're looking up a date. This is a must buy.

Well worth every cent!

5 out of 5 stars I Look Forward to this Every Year!.......2004-10-31

Great images loaded with detail that we can't get anywhere else.
My only question is, what happened to the book that was supposed to come out last year? I'd buy at least one!

Book Description

Star Trek's original series is the pop culture icon that started it all. Spawning four subsequent television series, ten movies, countless best-selling books, conventions, and even a language of its own, Star Trek inspired imagination, exploration, and adventure in a way not previously experienced. Space is still the final frontier, which is one reason the show rages on in syndication and merchandise sales. Even those born decades after the show's original run know Kirk and Spock, and are fascinated by their adventures. Featuring full-color images from the show and a pull-out centerfold with original art, this calendar is one no true fan can be without.

2 out of 5 stars Caution - This may not be what you get.......2004-12-30

I am a big Star Trek fan and a big Amazon fan so imagine how pleased I was (after having bought this calendar way back in August) to see that this looked like a totally different cover for the same year (2005).

However, when I recently received the calendar it was the same white background as the one I had purchase several months ago. I have contacted Amazon customer service and they could not yet determine if there are indeed two different calendars. They are investigating. In the meantime, I thought I would enter this review to keep other Star Trek "nuts" like myself (who absolutely must collect ever different calendar) from making my mistake.

I will update this review as soon as I get a definitive answer from Amazon. Until then...CAUTION...what you see is not what you get!

5 out of 5 stars TOS Calendar is Fantastic.......2004-12-27

Finally, a TOS calendar that incorporates photographs from both the TV series and the movies. Brilliant!

I knew this was a TOS calendar by the font on the front. This is a clear indication that only TOS images would be inside.

3 out of 5 stars Nice centerfold! (:.......2004-12-17

I've been more of a fan of the Ships of the Line calendar series since it started several years ago, but as a TOS fan from before there were any movies, who am I to complain when a family member gives the TOS calendar to me each year as a birthday present? (:

The layout is very minimalistic as another reviewer noted, just a white background for both the image and calendar, making a fairly stark impression compared to last year's rather spiffy dual-image page design. The main text does make use of one major color of each month's image, so there's some feeling of "theme" in that sense.

The images are 10 TOS and 2 TOS movie cast shots. The cover is not actually the movie Enterprise as shown on the Amazon page, but instead a CG TOS Enterprise on a white background.

But as both a TOS and "Ships Of The Line" fan, it's the central, non-calendar image that just knocks me away -- it's gorgeous. I assume it was in the running for the SOTL calendar but wound up here instead, as it's the same two-page horizontal format and quality. It's a CG image showing the Enterprise and shuttlecraft checking out the (beautifully) busted-up USS Excalibur after the M5 Computer war games. As a TOS fan that came in through the mechanics, it sets my heart a pitter-pat, yes it does... (:

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-10-19

The pictures look old and you would think that it would consist of at least some pictures from TNG, Voyager, DS9 and perhaps a shot or two at least (since its for 2005) from the new Enterprise - but no. All 12 pictures are old shots from TOS. Ive nothing against TOS but at least the title should mention the word TOS so that expectations are made clear. Dissapointing.

3 out of 5 stars Needs to go where no calender has gone before................2004-10-08

Unlike last years calender; this one does not have any intricate backgrounds with the Enerprise. It's just a plain white background with the photo in the middle. Some of them look like they were taken from calenders of years past. This is why there are no Deep Space Nine, Voyager, or Next Generation calenders. The creative spark is gone and the pictures the artist has chosen have long been seen before.

      Book Description

The advent of economic neoliberalism in the 1980s triggered a shift in the world economy. In the three decades following World War II, now considered a golden age of capitalism, economic growth was high and income inequality decreasing. But in the mid-1970s this social compact was broken as the world economy entered the stagflation crisis, following a decline in the profitability of capital. This crisis opened a new phase of stagnating growth and wages, and unemployment. Interest rates as well as dividend flows rose, and income inequality widened.

Economists Gérard Duménil and Dominique Lévy show that, despite free market platitudes, neoliberalism was a planned effort by financial interests against the postwar Keynesian compromise. The cluster of neoliberal policies--including privatization, liberalization of world trade, and reduction in state welfare benefits--is an expression of the power of finance in the world economy.

The sequence of events initiated by neoliberalism was not unprecedented. In the late nineteenth century, when economic conditions were similar to those of the 1970s, a structural crisis led to the first financial hegemony culminating in the speculative boom of the late 1920s. The authors argue persuasively for stabilizing the world economy before we run headlong into another economic disaster.

        Book Description

Since May 1997 the British macroeconomic policy framework has undergone a period of radical reform in order to deliver the economic stability necessary to achieve high and stable levels of growth. This book provides a comprehensive account of these reforms, including financial and regulatory policy reforms. Radical changes to the monetary policy framework, the fiscal policy framework, the regime for public spending and financial regulation are presented. Together they represent a coherent strategy to deliver economic stability and benefits to the wider economy. As well as providing an unprecedented insight into British government economic policy, the contributors take the reader through the intellectual underpinning to policy reform such as the arguments for central banking independence.

          Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Better have the recordings handy.......2006-08-22

This seems to be a new edition (with tablature added this time) of a book I used to have. I immediately recognized Howe's introductory remarks about the pieces, and his inscription at the end of the book. Unfortunately the chief thing I remember about that older book is how many errors it contained. This new version is an improvement in some respects (the transcription of "Clap," in particular, is a good deal more accurate than I remember the old one being), but it is still positively riddled with errors.

Most of the mistakes are incorrectly notated rhythms, which are sometimes not even close to what Steve actually plays. (In "The Ancient," having bungled an important rhythmic figure several times in a row, the transcriber gets it right on one occasion later in the piece, but then reverts to the earlier, incorrect version later on.) If you listen carefully to the recordings, these mistakes shouldn't cause you too much trouble. The notes, at least, are largely correct (actually there are some wrongs notes as well, but in most cases the corrections are obvious).

This book isn't expensive and it's a decent starting point for learning this music, but the number of errors is pretty outrageous. Until something better comes along, though, it beats taking the time to transcribe these pieces yourself. Just keep the recorded versions handy.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding Digital TV........2000-07-24

This book does a great job of explaining audio & video concepts. It's perfect for technical folks who didn't know much about DTV (Jpeg, Mjpeg, Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, etc ) and computer aspects of such Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding & decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with Digital Audio & Video production.

              4 out of 5 stars Nice job.......2000-04-08

This book is very good. Its four parts are very easy to search: analog audio, digital audio, analog video and digital video. They cover all of the existing aspects. As a university teacher, I use it for my course on Television Systems, but I think it is useful for an audio course, or a comprehensive audio and video course. I still think that books like these should have a spanish translation, for my students who do not read english.

4 out of 5 stars Good for general knoledge.......1999-08-01

This is a Hybrid book - gives too much information to be a intructory book, but not enough information to be able to implement anything. the book covers a lot of grounds, from detialed description on analog television to general details on mpeg and more, and short intruductory to a lot of topics, like firewire, scsi, ethernet, pci , etc...

5 out of 5 stars Very in-depth on all aspects of digital video and audio.......1998-06-23

The name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.

                Book Description

This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to FCC material on the emerging world of digital TV and high-definition television (DTV and HDTV). DTV is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform television as we now know it. DTV technology will allow broadcasters to offer TV with movie-quality picture and CD-quality sound, along with many other enhancements. Topics covered here include:

Plug and Play - Compatibility of Cable TV and Digital TV Receivers; DTV Factsheet; FAQs, Tower Siting, RF Guide, DTV Applications and Buildout Topics; Television Channel numbers; DTV and medical telemetry devices; shopper's guide; definitions; industry partners, extensive regulatory material.

HDTV uses the same amount of bandwidth (the size of the communications channel) as the current analog system, but with HDTV, about six times more information is transmitted. This capability translates to much better quality in picture and sound. HDTV is the highest quality of DTV, but it is only one of many formats. In addition to HDTV, the most common formats are Standard Definition Television (SDTV) and Enhanced Definition Television (EDTV). SDTV is the baseline display and resolution for both analog and digital. Transmission of SDTV may be in either the traditional (4:3) or wide-screen (16:9) format. EDTV is a step up from Analog Television. EDTV comes in widescreen (16:9) or traditional (4:3) format and provides better picture quality than SDTV, but not as high as HDTV. DTV is a more flexible and efficient technology than the current analog system. DTV can provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with "analog" technology. Converting to DTV will also free up parts of the scarce and valuable broadcast airwaves. Those portions of the airwaves can then be used for other important services, such as advanced wireless and public safety services (for example, police, fire departments, and rescue squads).

This CD-ROM has over 12,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!

Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool.

                  Book Description

Dozens of books currently available address some aspect of digital television, yet almost all of these texts deal exclusively with engineering and production issues associated with implementing new hardware and software. Digital Television: DTV and the Consumer offers a pragmatic, more socially oriented basis for understanding digital television. Beginning with a basic summary of how digital television works and how it evolved into its present state in the different television viewing environments (over-the-air, cable and satellite), author and researcher Book then offers the reader a more practical understanding of how digital television is currently being consumed in the household. Additionally, the text presents a summary of what consumers are saying regarding their digital television experience and what this data suggests for the future development of digital television business models.Unique to this volume are numerous Innovator Essays by some of the industry 's digital television pioneers. These insightful essays - from significant DTV innovators such as Jim Goodmon, president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, home of the first commercial digital television broadcast - give brief snapshots of critical moments in the transition and rollout of DTV, while focusing on what the future holds for consumers and the broadcast and electronics industries. The latest entry in Blackwell Publishing 's Media and Technology series, Digital Television: DTV and the Consumer provides media students, scholars, and professionals a compelling perspective of the social and cultural presence of this emerging technological phenomenon.

If you've been lucky enough to catch Bert Monroy's demonstrations on the TechTV cable show The Screen Savers, you know how good he is at revealing the magic within Photoshop. Monroy is a power user in the truest sense; Adobe even includes two of his brush styles (grass and maple leaf) in Photoshop 7. In this latest book, as on TV, he walks you through the steps he took to achieve such dazzling effects as snow and rain falling, sun glinting on the edge of a mirror, and reflections in a puddle, all using his own photorealistic digital paintings. Along the way, he touches on side issues like the effects of perspective on objects or how light sources create shadows in the "real" world.

As Monroy explains it, while creating one painting he finds methods to solve problems that arise in others. In the same way, he hopes that readers will learn by following along with his specific situations, for example, type that moves along the folds in an awning ruffle or an extremely subtle reflection of a matchstick in a marble. Since there are neither online project files nor a companion CD-ROM, readers are encouraged to work things out for themselves using their own artwork.

Monroy provides extensive advice on working with brushes; creating shadows, reflections, and surfaces (wood, metal, bark, stucco, and more); and creating fog, fire, and a nice flag waving in the breeze to finish it all off (where the miracle of clipping groups becomes clear). Readers learn the power behind the many options buried in Photoshop's palettes and menus.

If you own his previous book, Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop & Illustrator, you won't find much overlap here. Some of the images are the same, but for the most part they're used to show new techniques. You'll marvel at Monroy's digital masterpieces, many of which are collected in a bonus gallery section. Monroy's love of teaching and of making art is evident throughout, and it will light the fire of motivation and inspiration in readers of all levels. --Angelynn Grant

                      Book Description

The Technique and Power of Creation"This is a book of techniques. They are the techniques that I have developed in the creation of my fine art. My art is considered photo-realism because the final product looks like a photograph. As a commercial illustrator, I am commissioned to create photographs of products or situations that can't be photographed with a camera. In most cases, the product does not yet exist. To achieve such a high level of realism, I have developed the techniques I share with you in this book. This does not imply that you will become a photo-realist painter, but you will find that many of these techniques can be applied to many of the imaging problems that can arise in the workflow of anyone involved with the use of images. They are also techniques that might inspire you to explore the outer reaches of your own creativity."

                      --Bert Monroy

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book - Inspiring Author.......2007-03-19

Till I saw this book and Bert Monroys website my imagination and creativity for minimally very finite. Its amazing how he shows what can be done using image editors like photoshop. Its just blows you away. My wife thought the pictures in his books are photographs and when I told her bert monroy created them in photoshop, there was no sound from her. She was quite amazed. This book is well recommended. Authors like Bert Monroy truly amazes with their talent and give us additional thoughts and inspiration on how to improve our work.

5 out of 5 stars The book is beautiful, very informative........2004-03-13

I found this book very useful, very well illustrated, as Bert Monroy describes his technics. He teaches methods that opened my mind to the power that Photoshop CS has. While he covers many aspects of the program he dos not indulge in the usual rehash of every photoshop feature, focusing on specific projects. His reputation for a graphics artist and teacher are well deserved. Wonderful examples, just enough detail to convey the point without beating you over the head. Included color photos are well laid out, his teaching method couldn't be better. The tone will particular instruct the novice or intermeadiate user, but everyone will find something of use here. If you are looking for blow by blow 'how to' for every feature, look at Photoshop CS Sudio Techniques, or the Adobe Class Room in a Book. I only wish this book had more samples, examples. If you can't buy it, hope your local libray has or will. Do this for its artistic voice.

5 out of 5 stars Paint in Photoshop!.......2003-07-27

Bert is a great artist and teacher. I took a class from him, and learned so much, but couldn't absorb it all at once. This book allows you to learn his techniques at your own pace, and will give you the confidence to start creating images from scratch in Photoshop, or add painting techniques to your image manipulation. Highly recommended for intermediate to advanced Photoshop users and all artists.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Work from an amazing artist.......2003-06-24

Bert Monroy is probably one of the most talented Photoshop users there is. If you've ever seen him on TechTV, you've seen how effortlessly he uses PS.

This book is full of amazing artwork Bert has done with Photoshop, along with a lot of tips and techniques from the master himself. You'll have a hard time believe that this book isn't just a collection of photos. Bert style is so photo-realistic it's jaw-dropping.

Definitely a must-have book for any PS enthusiast. Even if you don't plan to use PS for Photoreal artwork, there are techniques here that are applicable to other uses for PS but the book itself is worth the price just for the awe factor of Monroy's work.

                      4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2003-06-19

This book will get your imagination going. Some great tips.

The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that there could have been more content.
