Capital Resurgent: Roots of the Neoliberal Revolution
Gérard Duménil , and Dominique Lévy Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674011589 |
Book Description
The advent of economic neoliberalism in the 1980s triggered a shift in the world economy. In the three decades following World War II, now considered a golden age of capitalism, economic growth was high and income inequality decreasing. But in the mid-1970s this social compact was broken as the world economy entered the stagflation crisis, following a decline in the profitability of capital. This crisis opened a new phase of stagnating growth and wages, and unemployment. Interest rates as well as dividend flows rose, and income inequality widened.
Economists Gérard Duménil and Dominique Lévy show that, despite free market platitudes, neoliberalism was a planned effort by financial interests against the postwar Keynesian compromise. The cluster of neoliberal policies--including privatization, liberalization of world trade, and reduction in state welfare benefits--is an expression of the power of finance in the world economy.
The sequence of events initiated by neoliberalism was not unprecedented. In the late nineteenth century, when economic conditions were similar to those of the 1970s, a structural crisis led to the first financial hegemony culminating in the speculative boom of the late 1920s. The authors argue persuasively for stabilizing the world economy before we run headlong into another economic disaster.

21st Century Guide to Digital TV (DTV) and High-Definition Television (HDTV): Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Buyer¿s Guide, Viewing and Broadcasting Regulatory Information, Towers, Cable TV, DTV Transition Plans, and Consumer Data
U.S. Government Manufacturer: Progressive Management ProductGroup: Book Binding: CD-ROM ASIN: 1592481604 |
Book Description
This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM provides a comprehensive guide to FCC material on the emerging world of digital TV and high-definition television (DTV and HDTV). DTV is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform television as we now know it. DTV technology will allow broadcasters to offer TV with movie-quality picture and CD-quality sound, along with many other enhancements. Topics covered here include:Plug and Play - Compatibility of Cable TV and Digital TV Receivers; DTV Factsheet; FAQs, Tower Siting, RF Guide, DTV Applications and Buildout Topics; Television Channel numbers; DTV and medical telemetry devices; shopper's guide; definitions; industry partners, extensive regulatory material.
HDTV uses the same amount of bandwidth (the size of the communications channel) as the current analog system, but with HDTV, about six times more information is transmitted. This capability translates to much better quality in picture and sound. HDTV is the highest quality of DTV, but it is only one of many formats. In addition to HDTV, the most common formats are Standard Definition Television (SDTV) and Enhanced Definition Television (EDTV). SDTV is the baseline display and resolution for both analog and digital. Transmission of SDTV may be in either the traditional (4:3) or wide-screen (16:9) format. EDTV is a step up from Analog Television. EDTV comes in widescreen (16:9) or traditional (4:3) format and provides better picture quality than SDTV, but not as high as HDTV. DTV is a more flexible and efficient technology than the current analog system. DTV can provide interactive video and data services that are not possible with "analog" technology. Converting to DTV will also free up parts of the scarce and valuable broadcast airwaves. Those portions of the airwaves can then be used for other important services, such as advanced wireless and public safety services (for example, police, fire departments, and rescue squads).
This CD-ROM has over 12,000 pages reproduced using Adobe Acrobat PDF software and Reader software is included. There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, comprehensive, and portable!
Our CD-ROMs are privately-compiled collections of official public domain U.S. government files and documents - they are not produced by the federal government. They are designed to provide a convenient user-friendly reference work, utilizing the benefits of the Acrobat format to uniformly present thousands of pages that can be rapidly reviewed or printed without untold hours of tedious searching and downloading. This book-on-a-disc makes a superb reference work and educational tool.

Photoshop Studio with Bert Monroy
Bert Monroy Manufacturer: New Riders Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:

If you've been lucky enough to catch Bert Monroy's demonstrations on the TechTV cable show The Screen Savers, you know how good he is at revealing the magic within Photoshop. Monroy is a power user in the truest sense; Adobe even includes two of his brush styles (grass and maple leaf) in Photoshop 7. In this latest book, as on TV, he walks you through the steps he took to achieve such dazzling effects as snow and rain falling, sun glinting on the edge of a mirror, and reflections in a puddle, all using his own photorealistic digital paintings. Along the way, he touches on side issues like the effects of perspective on objects or how light sources create shadows in the "real" world. As Monroy explains it, while creating one painting he finds methods to solve problems that arise in others. In the same way, he hopes that readers will learn by following along with his specific situations, for example, type that moves along the folds in an awning ruffle or an extremely subtle reflection of a matchstick in a marble. Since there are neither online project files nor a companion CD-ROM, readers are encouraged to work things out for themselves using their own artwork.
Monroy provides extensive advice on working with brushes; creating shadows, reflections, and surfaces (wood, metal, bark, stucco, and more); and creating fog, fire, and a nice flag waving in the breeze to finish it all off (where the miracle of clipping groups becomes clear). Readers learn the power behind the many options buried in Photoshop's palettes and menus.
If you own his previous book, Photorealistic Techniques with Photoshop & Illustrator, you won't find much overlap here. Some of the images are the same, but for the most part they're used to show new techniques. You'll marvel at Monroy's digital masterpieces, many of which are collected in a bonus gallery section. Monroy's love of teaching and of making art is evident throughout, and it will light the fire of motivation and inspiration in readers of all levels. --Angelynn Grant
Book Description
The Technique and Power of Creation"This is a book of techniques. They are the techniques that I have developed in the creation of my fine art. My art is considered photo-realism because the final product looks like a photograph. As a commercial illustrator, I am commissioned to create photographs of products or situations that can't be photographed with a camera. In most cases, the product does not yet exist. To achieve such a high level of realism, I have developed the techniques I share with you in this book. This does not imply that you will become a photo-realist painter, but you will find that many of these techniques can be applied to many of the imaging problems that can arise in the workflow of anyone involved with the use of images. They are also techniques that might inspire you to explore the outer reaches of your own creativity."

Amazing Work from an amazing artist.......2003-06-24
This book is full of amazing artwork Bert has done with Photoshop, along with a lot of tips and techniques from the master himself. You'll have a hard time believe that this book isn't just a collection of photos. Bert style is so photo-realistic it's jaw-dropping.
Definitely a must-have book for any PS enthusiast. Even if you don't plan to use PS for Photoreal artwork, there are techniques here that are applicable to other uses for PS but the book itself is worth the price just for the awe factor of Monroy's work.
Very Good.......2003-06-19
The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is that there could have been more content.
