Customer Reviews:
AMAZING ARTISTRY!.......2005-02-11
The new "Star Trek: Ships of the Line" calendar features outstanding artist renderings of the ships that we have all come to know and respect. The two standouts are: "Tomorrow's Enterprise (NCC-1701-J)," and my personal favorite, "Fleet Museum." Any "Star Trek" fan will not want to miss owning this 2005 calendar! Grade: A+
Amazing artwork, Too much NX-01, and strange date layout.......2005-01-16
The artwork, as always, is amazing. The 2-page spreads look great up close and 10 feet away. Like last year's Ships of the Line, this one features the NX-01 a bit too much.
My main reason for not giving it a 4 or 5 star rating is that the actual layout of the dates is non-standard! Instead of the standard five rows of seven days like every other calendar I've seen, the layout artist chose two rows of 15 or 16 days. This makes it a bit harder to glance at the calendar and see just what day "next Thursday" might be, forcing the viewer to scan along the line to find the day, labeled in a relatively small font.
Too Much NX-01.......2004-12-07
With half the images being from the current flop show
'Enterprise', I'll have to take a pass on this one. A
better distribution of subjects would make this a 'must
have', instead it comes off as a cheap marketing ploy
for a miserable series.
Simply amazing!.......2004-11-30
When I ordered this I figured it would be the standard fair, that is, the Calendar opens up vertically. Picture above the fold and calendar below. With standard pictures/artwork/renders of varies ships.
Well wasn't I amazed when this was not the case at all. The Calendar is horizontal. The artwork is amazing. It takes up the entire horizontal surface of the calendar. With the days placed strategically out of the way but very see-able. Also, there are dates for the casts of the shows also placed on the page. But the real highlight is the magnificent artwork. This is something to keep well after 2005 is long gone. I was actually stunned by the wonderful artwork and I couldn't help but crack a huge grin on the centerfold.
If you need a calendar to write on this is NOT the one to get, but if you want something beautiful to look at and enjoy while you're looking up a date. This is a must buy.
Well worth every cent!
I Look Forward to this Every Year!.......2004-10-31
Great images loaded with detail that we can't get anywhere else.
My only question is, what happened to the book that was supposed to come out last year? I'd buy at least one!

Book Description
Thomas Frank has been sending wake-up calls to just about everyone within reach over the past decade, in venues from The Village Voice to Harper's. His takes on labor politics, advertising, the virtues of the Midwest, and how un-cool you really are have won him a wide audience, and in this piece, Frank gives us a reading of cultural studies—viewed by some as an important new perspective in the academy, but by others as an unwieldy theoretical fad.

“I had a lot of bad dates. But I wrote a lot of good poems.”
So maintains Anita Liberty, the caustically funny New York City performance artist who was going along happily healing her hurt by hating and humiliating her detestable ex-boyfriend on stage and in print until the unthinkable happened: she had a good date. And one good date deserves another. And another. And another. And, all of the sudden, Anita Liberty finds herself in a predicament. Getting dumped launched Anita’s career–Will falling in love finish it? Who’s more important: her devoted audience or her newly devoted boyfriend? And on top of everything, Hollywood won’t stop calling and Anita can’t figure out if It wants a serious commitment or just a little bit of no-strings-attached fun. From digging mercilessly into the minutiae of her new relationship to dramatically torching every professional bridge she crosses in L.A., Anita refuses to let a big load of bliss get dumped right in the middle of her career path.
“He said that my work was amazing and hilarious and smart and that he can’t wait to see me perform.
So I had sex with him.”
“My boyfriend asked me to change my look.
To something other than contemptuous.”
{BARGAIN} Whatever Hollywood ends up paying me for the rights to the story of my life.
“It’s easier to go back to fantasizing about perfection . . .
than to accept that perfection is just a fantasy.”
“Boyfriend thinks I’d rather be right than happy.
Boyfriend’s right.
But I’m not telling him that.”
Through blog entries, film scenes, poems, and to-do lists, Anita Liberty documents the perils and pitfalls of dating, sex, relationships, artistic success, and the kind of true love that sucks the creative life out of you to the point where you just end up staring at a blank computer screen and thinking gooey thoughts about your new boyfriend even though you should be writing.

Part memoir, part humor, part psychology.......2006-12-11
An angry poet and performer meets the perfect man, falls in love, and struggles to escape a strange state of bliss in How to Stay Bitter Through The Happiest Times of Your Life, which uses blog entries, poems, to-do lists and more to explore her changed life. While it's difficult to neatly peg this title - it's part memoir, part humor, part psychology - it's something any public library collection should put on its display shelves, and is especially recommended for New Yorkers who will readily recognize the caustic humor.

Back and better than ever..........2006-08-06
You know how sometimes you love the first book an author wrote so much that you're afraid to read their next one for fear of being disappointed? There's nothing to fear here. Anita's follow up to her hilarious debut "How to Heal the Hurt by Hating" is just as insightful and entertaining. Do yourself a favor and add it to your cart immediately. Oh, and you might want to buy two because this is not one you're going to want to lend to your friends.
The funniest woman on the PLANET!!!.......2006-08-04
Oh my gosh - once again Anita Liberty KICKS [...]!! Her books are hysterical and so funny that you just laugh out loud (caution to those of you who read in unfunny places). If you've been through a break up, good one or bad, her books are a MUST. You'll relate to everything she says and has the nerve to do. If you haven't been through a break-up, good for you but read the book anyway. So, if you are reading this review to see if you should buy this book - DO IT NOW and get How To Heal The Hurt By Hating while you're at it - now GO!!
A must read for any intelligent, independent bride-to-be and those that love her.......2006-08-03
It's hard to stay grounded when you fall in love - and it's even harder to keep a sense of humor and reality once you become engaged and begin planning a wedding. The experience of falling in love to getting married is both amazing and overwhelming. However, somewhere in between the dress shopping, the registry, the diet, the guest lists and the family drama, a woman can forget who she is and who she was before the entire process began. This is where Anita Liberty steps in and slaps every intelligent, independent and accomplished woman who is going through (or has gone through) this process and reminds them that who they were before the engagement will inform who they'll be after the engagement and during the marriage. Anita's poetry is inspiring, funny, and real. In one poem, she admits that she doesn't want to get engaged, for fear of losing her independence, but also acknowledges that some other part of her really wants to be married and is dissappointed when an engagement doesn't come sooner. To me, this poem echoed what so many women I know go through as they fall in love - they want to be with that person entirely, but they don't want to lose who they are completely in the process. And I think that within the pages of Anita's book, any person can identify with the contradicting feelings she has, the inner struggles, and even the surrender to a Vera gown (despite a desire for simplicity). The book is about saying goodbye to ex-lovers, saying hello to one's future, and embracing who you are as an individual going forward. I laughed, I cried and I re-read it the same day I finished it. I really hope you consider buying this for yourself or for your friend/sister/cousin because it's more therapeutic than that hour massage you planned on buying her at the local spa.
I loved this book!.......2006-08-03
Anita's first book was so awesome that I went out and purchased her new one right away. I'm glad I did, it was such a good read. I was laughing through the whole thing. I just love the way she really expresses her feelings through the font! Anita is great and I'd love to read more from her!

modern anthology, maybe a little misleading?.......2003-11-06
not to say that this book isnt worth the time to look thru, because it definately has some interesting perspectives and great photographs to go along with it. but this isnt what i was expecting from this book. . . for what little i had found on it, there were mentions of how ancient societies used different piercing to show manhood and as rites of passage. so i was expecting that it was going to be more of a history, and showing social evolution of how what are typical body piercings today started as a sign of royality. alas, it is not. if anyone knows a book that is more along those lines of a history, please let me know!
anyway, this book is okay. if youre looking for a kind of photo documentary of modern piercings (most of which are people from europe) then id would tell you to buy this book. because thats exactly what it is.

A facinating look at the most popular Doctor.......1997-07-21
Tom Baker, for being the most popular actor ever to portray Dr. Who, has also stayed out of the sportlight. This book combines episode guides with collected interviews to form a facinating look at Baker's era as the Doctor. Really THE essential book on Tom's era as the Doctor

Designing with JavaScript opens up a whole new world to Web-design artists, especially those making the leap from a print-design background. Many people liken Web design to print design, but there is nothing interactive about a printed page. Web pages, however, can be completely dynamic, different from moment to moment and responsive to the reader. The best way to take advantage of this is through JavaScript.
Eleven chapters and four appendices cover the basics to the complex, from extracting and validating information using forms to creating rotating images to using DHTML for animation. The first half covers basic yet important issues like an introduction to the syntax of the language, browser detection, setting up forms, and controlling frames and windows. Filled with examples, screen shots, and links to more examples and info, these chapters build a solid foundation for the second half of the book.
Dynamic images, rollovers, using cookies, and creating interactive features using DHTML are some of the features covered later in the book, with numerous practical examples. These chapters are invaluable for the learning designer, as nearly every feature is practically required on a contemporary Web site. The appendices include a handy JavaScript guide to the language, including syntax, handlers, an object guide, and style properties.
Not everything can be handled (yet) through the available WYSIWYG editors, making this book an invaluable reference and one to keep at your fingertips. --Mike Caputo
Book Description
JavaScript is one of the core technologies of the Web. Using JavaScript, you can create dynamic, interactive web pages that include image rollovers, pop-up windows, auto-scrolling frames, intelligent forms, and sophisticated Dynamic HTML effects. Even better, you don't have to be a programming ace to learn enough JavaScript to incorporate these elements into your web pages. Designing with JavaScript shows you how to create the effects you want, without forcing you to wade through pages of dry programmer-speak about variables, operators, and functions. Each chapter demonstrates common JavaScript techniques and explains how to customize them for your own use. Along the way, it introduces basic JavaScript concepts, teaching the language in the context of real-world examples. By the time you finish this book, you'll have a solid foundation of JavaScript knowledge that you can apply to your own web pages. With Designing with JavaScript, you will learn to:
- Use JavaScript to produce visual effects, such as image rollovers and rotating billboards
- Launch new browser windows, control frames, and validate form data
- Customize your site by using JavaScript to detect browsers, platforms, and plug-ins
- Use cookies to keep track of visitors, so you can welcome new users while offering customized pages to returning users
- Create a tabbed folder interface, drop-down menus, and a scrolling headline ticker, using the basics of Dynamic HTML
The first edition of Designing with JavaScript taught tens of thousands of web designers how to enliven their pages with JavaScript. This new edition has been updated to cover the latest JavaScript techniques supported by current web browsers. If you are ready to start incorporating JavaScript into your designs, this is the book for you.

examples don't work.......2006-04-24
I tried to do the autoscroll example from chapter three. I started with the samples I downloaded and unzipped from the O'Reilly site. The first thing I noticed was that the picture in the samples was different from the picture in the book (no bother there), but then I noticed the picture was not really big enough to fill up the full width of the page, much less be big enough to scroll.
I went to a site which had panoramas so I could find a picture big enough for the exercise, and finished writing the page. But when I tried it out, the script didn't work at all. Not being an expert, I assumed that I had done the exercise incorrectly, but when I tried the example downloaded from the O'Reilly website-- it didn't work either!!!
Also, I noticed the code example in the book did not match the sample document from the downloaded .zip file.
You would think they would have the bugs worked out by now: it IS, after all, the Second Edition!
Good resource on DOM, DHTML, and java script.......2005-02-24
If you are looking for a book to cover DHTML, DOM, and java scripting with a view to enhance your web sites, this is an excellent book.
I have developed many corporate ASP.NET web sites, and did not rely on java scripting for anything. (Yes ASP.NET pages do generate some java scripts).
I found this book a great stepping off point to learn CSS, DHTML, DOM, and using java scripts to enhance my web sites.
Very good book for getting up to speed quickly..........2004-01-11
In some of my other reviews, I've talked about how you need a mixture of "how to" and reference books. This book falls into the "how to" realm, as this is a volume you can use if you're just starting out with JavaScript. Don't let the small size fool you, however. There's a lot of really good information packed into a book of manageable size.
The book is made up of a series of code samples that illustrate a particular task or function you'd want to accomplish in a web page. For instance, in the Forms And Validation chapter, the authors discuss why you would want to use JavaScript to do form validation. They then start out with a simple script to show how you'd set up a validation script for a form. After that, they start to build out the different validation edits that should catch invalid data. At the end, they recap with the complete script they just walked you through. The advantage to this style is that you are learning by doing real-world examples. And when finished, you have examples of code that you can refer back to in the future when you need similar functionality.
Another important thing to understand about JavaScript is how to use it to work with the object model of the browser, such as windows, forms, images, etc. Much of this information is interspersed within the chapters that are teaching you how to do things with JavaScript. I would have liked to see a chapter devoted just to the browser object model. However, given the intended audience (beginning web developers), it could have been a little too confusing to break that out.
For Notes/Domino developers, you'll find a lot that will be immediately useful as you start developing Domino web applications. Once again, the form validation section will help you to understand how you can use JavaScript to do your form validation instead of making round trips to the server to edit the Domino form using @Formula language. You will have to work a little harder to translate some of this into the Domino development environment, however. Since Domino translates Notes design objects into HTML "on the fly", you may never end up coding
