    Book Description

In 1816 a pair of Rhode Island brothers stopped their wagons along South Carolina's Tyger River, cleared away trees and chinquapin thickets, and began construction on a rustic spinning factory. From those humble beginnings arose one of the nation's mightiest textile communities, a place that by the end of the 19th century became known as "the Lowell of the South."

Over the course of nearly two centuries more than 100,000 people labored in the red brick cotton mills and modern textile factories of Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Textile Town is their story. One part historical narrative, one part scrapbook, one part encyclopedia, this illustrated volume presents the voices of scholars and blue-collar workers side by side in an exploration of this complex and compelling saga.

Working in libraries and mill villages, more than 40 writers and historians—many of them sons, daughters, and grandchildren of textile workers—contributed to this engaging history. From the great migration from the mountains in the 1880s, to the labor conflict of the 1930s, to the wartime camaraderie of the 1940s and beyond, Textile Town tells a seminal Southern story, one that readers won't soon forget.

      Book Description

The main focus of this book is on various theoretical and practical issues in the field of panel data econometrics. This is an important and active field of research with significant relevance for empirical studies in a variety of subjects including economics, finance, social sciences, health etc. This book presents contributions by several leading experts who provide their views on a wide range of topics, both theoretical and applied, that can serve as a basis for future research on the methodology and applications of panel data modelling.

Areas of application of panel data modelling have only been increasing over the past years and there is no doubt that the range is going to expand further. The applied papers of this book have been regrouped as one major part and further subdivided into different fields, thus showing their variety and opening up the horizon for researchers in these and other fields. The reader will notice that they all have a substantial methodological content which is indispensable for their analysis of the economic, social or other phenomena under consideration. This first part includes such diversified areas of study as macroeconomics, social economics, insurance/finance and energy economics.

As a second part, there are papers that deal more with theoretical issues such as specification problems, unit root tests and aggregation of individual series, heteroscedasticity tests for panel data models and non-parametric techniques.

The final part contains papers that are directly related to and elaborate on Balestra's work.

Steve Allen was a true pioneer in radio and, especially, TV. In this book he chronciles his adventures in the TV world. Along with a coherent history of his progress thru the nascent medium, he throws in an ample supply of anecdotes from his TV days. Some of them are plain old "gotta-put-the-book-down-cuz-you're-laughing-so-hard" variety, and as such, it's almost like seeing the shows.

Highly recommeded. One of his very best efforts.

This is, of course, Steve Allen's account of his many years in television. He relates many amusing anecdotes about his experiences. Recomended to any fans of television history.

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Save your time and money.......2007-01-09

This book is worthless. If you have Cubase, and have no clue how to lay down a drum rhythm then it may help you with it's ample screen shots of the Cubase drum editor. It has sample midi files, but they are saved without the right extension, so if you want to use them you have to copy them from the CD and rename them.
Save your time, there are better drum books out there.

1 out of 5 stars Not Just Worthless, But also agrivating!.......2006-05-22

In the first paragraph of the introduction it states that the book does not affiliate itself to any one sequencing package and instead focuses on common rhythm manipulation techniques and concepts found in all sequencing applications.

What it should say is that this book is only for people who currently have a deep understanding of LOGIC and or CUBASE, and through the 51 Tutorials its possible that you might grasp some concepts of rhythm manipulation techniques. This book never at any point mentions generalities of sequencing software but only specific actions of what to do in CUBASE and LOGIC, and rarely explains the purpose or reason.

After a poor explanation of AUDIO and how it relates to computers. the tutorials start and are relentless and without clear guidelines as to why these 6 tutorials are part of a chapter and the next two tutorials are part of a different chapter. then apparently board with tutorials the book spends a chapter defining audio effects, (delay, echo, phase, ect ) No not discussing these will effects our rhythms or drums just defining what a echo is and how compression works. then in a chapter titled STYLES it list percussion sounds, Latin, funk, rock, and snare rolls. and then fro no reason at all the tutorials start back up again and power through the rest of the book.
also a key factor this book has no Index in the back or any sort of indication that the book is finished. leaving the reader in terror that more tutorials might have made it into other copies, and other people might have had to endure more before they realized this book will only make you hate drummers.

1 out of 5 stars Steer away from this book!.......2006-03-20

I learned absolutely nothing from this book. My only advice is: steer away from it! This guy is probably a good drummer, but know nothing about teaching. Everything is repeated a hundred times. I was expecting to learn something about humanising, velocity, ghost hits and things that makes your programming a little more lively and more real, but disappointingly he didn't cover that stuff other than scratching the surface. And the CD which was included in the book was full of midi-files and wave-files without a file-extention, so I had to copy them all over to my hard disk and rename them...

        3 out of 5 stars Suggesting a new edition..........2005-10-06

So far, I have found the content of this book of medium originality and novelty though the self-learning and example oriented approach may be richer than other available books.

I like the nice US letter format with pages enlarged vertical layout space as well the efforts from the author to come-up with something new in self-learning concept and approach. The content is somehow too basic (about 2 stars) but the approach is worth the extra star (3 stars in total).

I suggest improvement in chapters 1, 2 to be less basic on MIDI coverage but jump on MIDI control change CC and external hardware controler suitable for drum machine and drum pads.

I would definitely recommend enriching chapter 3 central music theory section dramaticaly. Especially develop the specifity of rhythm writing and arrangement with other sections.

I would suggest also revising chapters 4, 5 on audio recording with a sound engineer. Instead it would make sense to make aware the electronic drum musician of the acoustic drum variety, acoustic timbers, microphone selection and different miking setups together with a balanced mix not only for the rythm section but other section of arrangements. Please make reader aware (reveal?) the boredom limits of systematic EQ settings and excessive compression 'receepes' which kills life of any rhythm lines by signal processing abused percusive sounds.

I would suggest to cover Chapter 6, 7 on audio effects namely equalization (timber), dynamics (compression and expansion of enveloppe) and effects (delays, reverb and others) in order to cover different approach 1) realistic or 'HiFi' reproduction of acoustic drum sounds 2) specific music styling of drum samples 3) drum sound creation by means of electronic synthesis and advanced sampling.

Again I would recommend developing chapter 8, 9 to complement the music theory section for a non-musician background reader. Together with variety of drum styles it may be the opportunity to have a variety of acoustic drum sets sounds and electronic examples counterparts.

Improvement on CDROM editing together with covering a wider audio palette is highly recommended to open the ear and musical mind of the reader.

One should expect that the electronic musician has been diving through the available online materials of some well-known music magazine online content already.

I recommend the author and support from the editor to come-up with a new revision much richer which can provide a didactic guide to a beginner or intermediate reader (the targeted audience, wasn't it?) while making sense and interest to the professionals.

1 out of 5 stars Very Beginning, Very Specialized.......2005-09-13

This book has little to teach that's not for the absolute beginner. To boot, the only time it gets into detail is when it's dealing with Cubase specific programming.

                Book Description

There exists in America a peculiar, fascinating subculture. Its exotic rituals include withstanding subzero temperatures with an upper body clad only in brightly colored paint, shouting arcane statistics at talk-show broadcasters, adopting the graphic images of lucrative businesses in bursts of patriotic fervor, and finding a curious but tangible form of self-esteem in the spectacle of overgrown armored men banging each other into unconsciousness. Hello, sports fans, this is a book about you. In fact, about us!

For true fans, sports are close to religion, a substitute for politics, an outlet for the most violent tendencies, and an excuse to vent primal instincts--in other words, to act like the maniacs we are. But for the professional leagues and the megacorporations that exploit them, sports is a lot more important than any number of brew-soaked stadium seats. It's a serious business with rules you don't break and customers you don't serve, and it makes a small group of talented and/or connected people very, very, very rich, often at the expense of "home team" taxpayers who never hear the crack of a bat or the swish of a net.

In this scathing, passionate, hilarious book, Dennis Perrin, the acclaimed author of Mr. Mike, examines the species Sportus fannus from the point of view of a life-long member. But his love of America's great games does not blind him to their routine, often cynical misuse by a sports marketing establishment that goes to absurd lengths to glorify, even deify, professional athletes, just to sell a few more pairs of sneakers to awestruck fans at home.

Wow, excellent read. The author goes on a subject by subject dissection of the madness that is pro sports.Everything from Religion to Race to the Cult of The Swoosh is covered. American Fan really got me thinking. What kind of person am I that i put so much time, money, and energy on the abilities of a bunch of spoiled millionaires. The sports themseleves are fine, i think football is a blast to watch, its' what's done with them that bothered me. As a sports radio commentator once said(they are skewered in the book also)If all the owners disappeared one day, big deal get new owners, likewise no more players fine, get new players, get rid of all the fans...oops no more sports..and guess who gets screwed all the time , the fans. Well not me, no more. There's better things to do with the 50 or so years(i hope)I have left on earth. Thank you Mr. Perrin for putting into print what i've felt for a long time.

I'm relatively stunned at the amount of good publicity this book seems to be getting in the media. I thought it was an incoherent rant that touched on many different subjects without order or insight. You might want to save your money on this one.

Written by a team of authors, Visual Basic Source Code Library presents dozens of useful tips and plenty of sample code for novice and expert Visual Basic developers alike. Samples here range from just a few lines to several pages of code, grouped by topic.

Early examples extend the functionality of simple Visual Basic controls such as list boxes and combo boxes. The beginning of the book also includes tips for getting better control of Visual Basic forms and for better process control, including starting and stopping applications and parsing program arguments. Additional topics include working with serial ports and fonts.

Later the book explains functions for retrieving error information and converting back and forth between hex, decimal, and binary numbers. This section features an excellent and extensive sample that simplifies the Remote Data Objects (RDO) object model for easier programming with SQL Server. Graphics examples include a variety of techniques for using bitmaps and animations.

When it comes to files, there are superb samples for reading and writing INI file entries and working with ZIP files. There are relatively few Internet examples here, but there are several useful techniques provided for sorting arrays and playing WAV, AVI, and MPEG files for better multimedia applications.

Final sections provide a variety of useful miscellaneous tips, such as how to reboot Windows and work with the taskbar. The very last chapter provides a library of Windows NT network administration functions in Visual Basic (with support for such features as adding and deleting users and changing passwords).

Throughout Visual Basic Source Code Library, the authors provide access to many useful Win32 functions through Visual Basic and provide a grab bag of tips and tricks that can speed the development of your next Visual Basic project. --Richard Dragan

5 out of 5 stars Very good book!.......2003-03-10

There are some issues with the code in this book, and it is obvious that the files on the CD were NOT bug tested. For example, the Zip32.dll file is an outdated version and does not work with the code given and the website for the new .dll file is gone. Even though there are some issues I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS BOOK! It is the best resource out there for small problems that you would otherwise need to go to a forum and post a question. If you are new to VB or are semi-experienced, GET THIS BOOK!

3 out of 5 stars Good but some code problems...........2001-10-25

I will say upfront that I have only just started using this book.
But it doesn't take long to realise that at least some of the code has NOT been bug tested (or tested to see if it even works).
Specifically (so far) the Thayer encryption routine (doesn't work - had to download an alternative) and the Getfile routine (locks up after multiple uses).
Will post a further review if matters change for better (or worse).
The book still has a good layout and has lots of useful routines for everyone just dont expect them to work without a little 'tweaking'.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2001-07-11

I'm not going to babble on meaninglessly, I just want to say simply "Great Book" within 2 minutes of opening it I was able to look up a procedure as well as find several others of interest on the way to the page I wanted. Within 10 minutes I had the concise code typed into a program and succesfully ran it - that is what I got the book for! Money well spent!

4 out of 5 stars Tons of cool Visual Basic routines to add to any library........1999-07-29

While building my own comprehensive Visual Basic library (inproc DLL), I found that I had to browse the web for hours looking for a particular routine that I needed for my newest programming projects. I came across this book while browsing the VB library at a book store, and found that it contained a lot of the code I was looking for to complement my growing library.

What really sold me was the ZIP compression code included with the book. The code as presented is based on the freeware Info-Zip DLL library, and the example was not done well. The author didn't spend any time developing the ZIP routines other than showing how to access the DLL. So I took the sample and built a wrapper for the code, which gave me access to individual files inside the ZIP. I can now add and delete any file stored in a ZIP using my new wrapper. But it was based on the code and hints included with this book.

There are just TONS of routines in this book that I have found very useful, including a number of network API functions that are very difficult to come by without a reference like this.

If you are building a Visual Basic library of your own, then this book is a great asset, and I believe provides more functionality than many of the "commercial" Visual Basic libraries out there. The benefit is that you can see the code for yourself and make use of it in any way you see fit.

4 out of 5 stars Well spent money.......1999-06-29

For a beginner or a intermediate user this book is definitely a must have. It contains a lot of useful codes that are commented and easy to understand. For the advanced user there isn't much to get. If you consider the fact that there are 11 authors to this book then the book seems to be a bit thin. I had hoped for much more code. The language can sometimes be a bit confusing: The code analasys is sometimes more difficult to understand than the code itself.
