"Competitive running gives your running life a focus. Competition measures progress. You set a goal and accomplish it." Bob Glover and Shelly-lynn Florence Glover, authors of The Competitive Runner's Handbook, know what they're talking about. Bob has run competitively for nearly 40 years, coached for 30 years, and completed more than 30 marathons, while Shelly-lynn has raced for more than 20 years and is an exercise physiologist with a master's degree from Columbia University. They've coauthored several books on running. Clocking in at over 600 pages, The Handbook covers basic training techniques, gives tips on speed training, and outlines regimens for specific races: short, 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon. There are also sections on motivation and the mental aspects of competitive running, proper running form, nutrition, dealing with illness and injury, and more. In addition, the book includes many helpful charts. Straightforward and authoritative, this is a comprehensive reference guide that's suited to runners of all levels. --Andy Boynton
Book Description
For both runners entering that first neighborhood race and elite marathoners, trainers Bob and Shelly-lynn Florence Glover's completely revised guide is the book on training to compete. A book that's already sold close to 200,000 copies, The Competitive Runner's Handbook will now offer all the latest information needed to design basic training programs; special workouts to increase strength, endurance, and power; schedules and worksheets to develop individual goals; and specifics on preparing for all kinds of races--with an emphasis on the 10K and the marathon.
Informed by their over thirty years of coaching experience, the Glovers give winning tips on alternative training, footwear and diet, and common injuries and illnesses, as well as sensible advice on balancing running with work and home life.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Reference.......2007-10-21
This book has an extensive amount of information, race charts, pacing charts, training guides for runners of various levels and for various events (5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon). Special chapters on marathon recovery, mental aspects of running, racing strategy, and so on. I've had this book for over a year and find myself turning back to it again and again. Well organized and easy to flip through and find the information that I need (sometimes with the use of the very handy index).
Very thorough but a little dated.......2007-10-03
When I bought this book I was just starting to run longer distances and hadn't been in any races, so I wasn't the target audience. If you are like me. you'll be a little unsure what your 10K pace is, for example, because you may never have run one. But if you think you're going to be in races and care about your time, I would suggest that this book is worth buying and reading even if those are still in your future.
The book is also kind of old-fashioned, based on what I've picked up elsewhere. It focuses on total weekly mileage more than seems to be in fashion these days, for example, and that approach may not work for those like me who are getting into this at an older age (I'm 46). It also talks about calling race organizers on the phone rather than looking at the race's website, which seems kind of quaint in 2007.
What's really good about it is that it covers so much. It gave me a lot of good tips for little things to remember before my first race (the San Francisco Half Marathon). It gives guidance for many different lengths of races. It talks about injuries and other issues that may come up. It even talks about balancing running with the rest of your life.
With a good update this would be a 5 star book, and even as it is, it's well worth your time.
Wonderful book for a novice.......2007-07-26
I absolutely loved this book. After reading it I felt that I was far more prepared to both physically and mentally take on a marathon. I highly recommend this book to anyone that is starting to run and wants to get ready for any length of race.
Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide, you should look elsewhere for information on nutrition or lifting. But if you are looking for a solid running guide, this is the right book for.
Great book for running any distance.......2007-06-22
This book is great. It has lots of details on training, physiology, diet, recovery, pacing, and everything else you can think of pertaining to running. The charts show you if you finished a race at one distance, how that translates into times for other distances, which is very helpful. This book doesn't give a bunch of feel-good you-can-do-it rah-rah, it gives detailed, specific information on how to run faster, how to run longer, how to run if undertrained, etc, etc. I highly recommend it.
Best book for compettive running.......2007-06-01
Very informative book w/ great programs for all races and all levels.

If you haven't got your health..........2003-12-21
Carol Johnston, an assistant professor at my seminary, for years directed the Faith, Wealth and Leadership project, from which this text derives. Johnston gives an overview of the major strands of economic thought over the past few centuries with particular attention to the theological implications of these theories. Economic theories from Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, Alfred Marshall, John Maynard Keynes and Milton Friedman are laid out in historical progression, showing the development of economic systems and culture. As theologian John Cobb Jr. says in the foreword, the scope of economic thinking in theological and religious circles rarely extends beyond the capitalism/socialism duality, but there is much more to investigate, and much more at stake as modern economic systems seem to be reaching a saturation point around the world.
Economists such as Smith, Malthus, and Mill had ideas that are worth considering and incorporating, but are inadequate in and of themselves for modern global economic scales. Marxism sought a refocus that ultimately failed as a pure system, while influencing (to a greater degree than most Western politicals and economists like to admit) current economic systems. The more recent Keynesian and Friedman models still focus upon growth, production and wealth to the exclusion of (or ignoring of) sustainability in simple ecological terms.
Johnston likens modern capitalism to the situation with the Sorcerer's apprentice, who, upon using his magic to make life easier, finds the system taking a life of its own, refusing to be shut off. Modern capitalism has a very single-minded focus -- a spiralling cycle of production and consumption -- and the drive to ever more efficient, effective, and advanced goods and services that incorporate more and more of the world's diminishing ecosystem becomes a problem that needs adjustment, if not intervention. The central goal of much economic theory two centuries ago forward was the creation of wealth -- this has been accomplished. The idea that economies should now look for sustainability rather than growth, and health rather than wealth, is one that Johnston embraces, pulling supporting concepts from each of the major theorists along the way.
Finally, Johnston calls for people to look at economic systems more in terms of living systems than mechanical models. This paradigm allows for the ideas of community, divinity and justice to have a strong guiding place in overall economic decision-making, which in turn influences the whole culture.
Johnston addresses some of the criticisms that her book may get in the introduction, and these are in many ways valid. However, in writing for particular audiences, there are some messages that never grow old and always bear repeating; with the seeming universal triumph of unfettered capitalism being hailed globally even as economies decline and the overall health of nations does not improve, the call for a revisioning of capitalism is important.
Reflections On Bigger is Better.......2003-08-17
Carol Johnston offers a helpful review of economic theory the offers reflections on modern consumerism. Bigger is not necessarily better and security won't absolutely follow money. She contends that what's needed is strong relationships with Self, Family, Community and God to really feel safe and secure. Excellent read!
Brilliant and far-ranging.......1998-07-17
Carol Johnston has an integrated view of economic theory from 18th through 20th centuries, (Adam Smith onward). All then deeped with a mature theological understanding. Truly an amazing book.

Book Description
While scholars and critics generally agree that the 1960s signaled the end of high modernism, what is less clear is how to characterize contemporary art since the 1960s. Acclaimed art scholar Jonathan Harris here tackles this question by assembling a rich body of essays, along with an extended interview with renowned feminist art scholar Amelia Jones, that track the movements in and issues central to contemporary art practice since this pivotal decade.
The contributors to Dead History, Live Art? argue that visual art since the 1960s can no longer claim a separate and exalted status; rather it should be interpreted as an integral part of a larger culture of display, consumption, and power that continues to evolve within a global capitalist system. Distinguished writers and artists such as Frazer Ward, Anna Dezeuze, Richard Layzell, and Jane Chin Davidson launch a new discussion on art and mass culture in their essays, with uncompromising examinations of how, in the context of modern capitalism, visual culture has radically redefined the relationships between the production and use of images, texts, and interpretive analysis. Issues explored in their essays include the rise of "performance art" in the 1960s and 1970s, the focus on diverse installation and mixed-media practices during the 1980s and 1990s, and, in an investigation reaching into the political sphere, the theater of visuality and spectacle created to support the invasion of and war in Iraq in 2003.
Dead History, Live Art? proposes an intriguing new perspective on art history and practice, with its critical examination of their conventions, values, and institutions. As such, the volume reconfigures not only our understanding of contemporary art but also the entire concept of the avant-garde.

Excellent, but you shouldn't stop here........2006-07-22
This is a terrific book for any Michael Landon fan who wants to know the more personal side and home life of the man. But if you truly want to know all sides of him, there are other books out there that show a more unbiased look you should read as well. You have to keep in mind that this comes from a grieving daughter who is still bitter over his divorce from her mother. Although there's no doubt that she loved him dearly, being an actual step-daughter, it's obvious that she took her mother's side in the divorce. There are always two sides to any dispute. I'm not saying he did nothing wrong. But she conveniently leaves his side out, not only about the divorce, but about how unfair she makes his will seem. After reading several other books on Michael Landon, the whole picture comes more clearly into view. Over all, I would still strongly recommend this book, but it shouldn't stand alone.
A promise.......2006-01-04
This book was more about Cheryl than it was Michael. that is why I gave it 3 stars. it does have some interesting reading about the Landon family. it was not a bad book but just not what I expected I wanted to read more about Michael and his life. an ok read.
Hang your head low, Cheryl.......2005-12-30
Years before his death, in an interview, Michael Landon stated that, his greatest heartbreak would be that, after his death, one of his kids write one of those "tell all" trashy books.
Cheryl Pontrelli, you have succeeded in doing the one thing your step-father feared. You ruined his reputation and put him among those stars who have had a trash book written about them. I hope you have since squandered the profits from this book and are working at a supermarket reading the tabloids during your lunch break.
No Intimate Portrait of Michael Landon.......2003-08-24
I totally agree with Kandice Esposito's excellent, articulate and objective synthesis of this book. Michael Landon deserves an infintely better biography than this.
Michael's journey through life was not an easy one and he had both his good and less good sides as we all do. But I would like to read a book that compassionately reflects his life's journey from being a survivor of child abuse to one of the most beloved and successful individuals in the history of television.
Cheryl Landon's book seems to me to be the autobiography of a needy individual not yet able to fully resolve her relationship with her late stepfather. The book is poorly written in terms of content and structure and is very poorly illustrated. There are so many wonderful and evocative photos of Michael that could have been used to make this book a collector's item for that aspect alone.
I am so glad that I didn't waste my money on this book and, instead, bought the A&E Michael Landon Biography from Amazon. It is a fascinating, compassionate and respectful video that tells the viewer so much about Michael and it also contains many utterly delightful family photos as well as very interesting comments from his family, friends and colleagues. This video is a fine tribute and one that all of us who hold Michael in affection can enjoy
Disappointing.......2001-07-10
I had mixed emotions after reading this book. I felt it was extremely self-serving and biased, both on the part of the writer. I feel that Michael Landon, had he wanted a book written about himself, should have been respected enough to make that decision for himself. This book wallows way too much in the emotions of the writer, often seeming whiny and desperate. It also seems to be a biography of the writer herself, not only about her stepfather. "I promised my dad" -Promised your dad to write a book about elements that were best left private and sacred, or at the very least, should have had his permission to disclose? Promised him to write a book about yourself and your own misgivings? There were also many subtle negative inferences to Michael Landon's wife Cindy, as well as her relations. This book seems to be a poor attempt to salve regret. Michael Landon deserved much, much better. I think Michael Landon's memory would have been better served through a more professional, gracious and respectful medium than the spirit in which this book was created. This book does not seem a fitting tribute to such a fine individual, actor, director, writer, husband, father, friend and grandfather.

Book Description
"Hackos and Redish wisely offer us the three things we most need about user and task analysis: practical advice, practical advice, and practical advice." -Ben Shneiderman, University of Maryland
"This book is well written, thorough, and loaded with techniques, examples, and resources that bring analysis to everyone." -Marcia L. Conner, Director of Usability & Learnability PeopleSoft, Inc.
User and Task Analysis for Interface Design helps you design a great user interface by focusing on the most important step in the process -the first one. You learn to go out and observe your users at work, whether they are employees of your company or people in customer organizations. You learn to find out what your users really need, not by asking them what they want, but by going through a process of understanding what they are trying to accomplish.
JoAnn Hackos and Janice (Ginny) Redish, internationally known experts in usable design, take you through a step-by-step process to conduct a user and task analysis. You learn:
* How interface designers use user and task analysis to build successful interfaces
* Why knowledge of users, their tasks, and their environments is critical to successful design
* How to prepare and set up your site visits
* How to select and train your user and task analysis team
* What observations to make, questions to ask, and questions to avoid
* How to record and report what you have learned to your development team members
* How to turn the information you've gathered into design ideas
* How to create paper prototypes of your interface design
* How to conduct usability tests with your prototypes to find out if you're on the right track.
This book includes many examples of design successes and challenges for products of every kind.
Customer Reviews:
It's about communication not design.......2002-09-15
This book does not cover design of the interface well at all.
Not worth buying for design. Ok for how to talk to a user
Excellent Practicle tips.......2001-06-19
This book was the best out of several others that I have read realted to usability engineering or UCD. It had several practical examples and stories attached to each topic. Its excellent for starter as well as proffesionals who are working at companies and have to justify several things. Several formates for reports and other resources are available for conducting a good Users and Task Analysis. More so its really easy and interesting to read with all the stories and the diagrams.
Read it before you need it........2001-01-06
If there is one strong message in this book, it is: Go talk to the people who will use your product. It's an important message. Software designers and writers spend too much time with each other developing clever tricks, while the poor user, often left to self-train with a poorly written manual, gives up in frustration. The authors follow their own advice--in addition to telling you how to conduct a site visit to the end users, there are clear instructions (based on experience) on planning a visit, structuring questions, how to make the site visit useful for both the analyzers and the users, and figuring out what the user said and what it means about the product. There are reminders about release forms and examples of the forms themselves. Case studies help make the points clear and undestandable. A thoroughly readable book in clear and simple language that can be started anywhere for quick help, or read cover to cover for a complete course.
A handbook you will dog ear from use.......2000-12-16
First of all, I have not read this book cover to cover. I have used it as a manual for task analysis in bits and pieces. Eventually, I will read it cover to cover, as it deserves this attention and I need the information.
I was recommended this book by a colleague and since recommended it at least a dozen times myself to fellow human factors engineers and software/system designers. It had the answers to many of the practical questions I was asking and being asked.
This book gives practical advice on how to analyse a task based on the "things that need to be done" to the "people that need to do them". Based on the recommendations, these are not "pie in the sky" ideas but practical tips from the people that do this work day to day.
If you read through the table of contents that Amazon provides you will find most if not all of your questions on how to go about this type of work answered within the pages of this book.
Briefly the Chapters are broken up into main segments of this type of work:
1. Introducing User and Task Analysis for Interface Design
UNDERSTANDING THE CONTEXT OF USER AND TASK ANALYSIS
2. Thinking about Users
3. Thinking about Tasks
4. Thinking about the User's environment
5. Making the Business case for site visits
GETTING READY FOR SITE VISITS

The appendices are a collection of very useful information to jog your memory while doing a site visit as well as some general user interface guidelines. This makes for a nice checklist to check if you forgot anything.
Not only is this book chock full of good tips, advice and an idea of how to structure this type of work, but it was designed well visually. The fonts and typography are pleasant to look at and the examples, graphics and important points are well illustrated. I guess they did a good job of analyzing the task of the reader as well.
