Gary Larson calls The Complete Far Side, the massive two-volume collection of his Far Side cartoons, an "18-pound hernia giver." Sure to give any coffee table a solid workout, the handsome and heavy 1,272-page "legacy book" is a must for fervent fans; over 4,300 single-panel comics with more than half in color and 1,100 that have not appeared in any book form before (the popular--and far less weighty--paperback collections).
Set in rough chronological order, the comics share pages with occasional letters from fans, detractors, editors, folks made famous by a particular cartoon, and those begging for explanations. Though few explanations are provided (Larson personally supplies merely one, plus a single apology), this collection helps answer the inevitable "how do you think up these things" conundrum. Before each year's cartoons, Larson provides insight with essays about his childhood, various travels, occupational hazards, and his official rules for dealing with bedtime monsters (which often turned out to be his older brother). Most wonderful is the first essay on how the comic started. (His longtime editor Jake Morrissey's long introduction is a must read on The Far Side's story).
Despite no central characters, it's easy to spot patterns in Larson's wild and wacky cartoons. Animals, insects, and inanimate objects often exhibit all-too-human impulses. Larson's subjects are often in scenes of peril--disasters, visits to hell, and perhaps a hundred cartoons set on a one-palm tree deserted island. It is what Larson's fertile imagination mined from those situations that created fans and enemies for 14 years. (Larson retired at his peak and then went into jazz music). The comics are not indexed (how could they be--first lines? listings of cartoons with cows?); finding a favorite requires a great memory for its publication date. Best simply to peruse the pages of this beautiful collection in which you will certainly find more than a few new chuckles before landing on your beloved Larson sketch. --Doug Thomas
Book Description
New York Times best-seller!
“Every one of these cartoons is just something that drifted into my head when I was alone with my thoughts. And, for better or worse, I ‘jotted’ them down. It was only later, when perhaps I received an angry letter from someone, that it struck me: Hey! Someone's been reading my diary!”
—Gary Larson, from the preface to The Complete Far Side
Revered by its fans as the funniest, most original, most “What the ... ?”-inspiring cartoon ever, The Far Side® debuted in January 1980 and enjoyed an illustrious 14 years on the world’s comics pages until Gary Larson’s retirement in 1994. The Complete Far Side celebrates Gary’s twisted, irreverent genius in this ultimate Far Side book, a lavish production, which takes its place alongside collector’s-edition art books.
A masterpiece of comic brilliance, The Complete Far Side contains every Far Side cartoon every syndicated—over 4,000 if you must know—presented in (more or less) chronological order by year of publication, with more than 1,100 that have never before appeared in a book. Also included are additional Far Side cartoons Larson created after his retirement: 13 that appeared in the last Far Side book, Last Chapter and Worse, and six cartoons that periodically ran as a special feature in the New York Times Science Times section as The Far Side of Science. Creator Gary Larson offers a rare glimpse into the mind of The Far Side in quirky and thoughtful introductions to each of the 14 chapters. Complaint letters, fan letters, and queries from puzzled readers appear alongside some of the more provocative or elusive panels. Actor, author, and comedian Steve Martin offers his pithy thoughts in a foreword, and Gary Larson’s former editor describes what it was like to be “the guy who could explain every Far Side cartoon.”

NO COWS WERE HARMED IN PRINTING THIS MASTERPIECE!.......2007-10-25
Where BILL WATTERSON is philosophical and whimsical, GARRY LARSON is absurdly surprising and devilishly creative! He will come at your funny bone from all directions - including the ones you knew not they existed.
I remember ordering his large sized collections one by one from the Book-Of-The-Month-Club and then laughing out loud all weekend!
Animals and humans never have existed so harmoniously. This is the universe of the absurd, the weird, the what-if, the I-know-this-is-not-possible-but-then-why-does-it-feel-so-familiar?
Own most his cartoons in these 2 beautifully bound volumes.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The Far Side collection.......2007-08-04
Having always been a fan of the Far Side, this was well worth the purchase and my wife and I have enjoyed laughing together. My only complaint are the many, many blasphemous cartoons where God is the butt of the joke. It is also annoying that there are so many cartoons promoting evolution. So discernment is needed.
Nice book - fast shipping ... unattended extra payments.......2007-07-22
The books (complete far side) itselves are marvelous. I received them much earlier than indicated by amazon. The only problem was that I had to pay 10 euro extra on import duties: the custom house had opened the packet.
Why Gary, Why?!.......2007-07-21
Though this collection is nostalgic for a die hard fan like myself, I can't suppress my disappointment at how many of these cartoons have been retouched in COLOR. This coupled with the small panel size and wasted page space is actually quite aggravating dispite the 1000 cartoons not previously released in book form.
The Complete Far Side 1980-1994 (2 vol set) by Gary Larson.......2007-07-13
Fantastic collection of Far Side cartoons all in two volumses. Wonderful coffee table books for company as well. Top of the line humor, especially for thinking people. Very inexpensive.

Book Description
Parallel Algorithms for Linear Models provides a complete and detailed account of the design, analysis and implementation of parallel algorithms for solving large-scale linear models. It investigates and presents efficient, numerically stable algorithms for computing the least-squares estimators and other quantities of interest on massively parallel systems. The monograph is in two parts. The first part consists of four chapters and deals with the computational aspects for solving linear models that have applicability in diverse areas. The remaining two chapters form the second part, which concentrates on numerical and computational methods for solving various problems associated with seemingly unrelated regression equations (SURE) and simultaneous equations models. The practical issues of the parallel algorithms and the theoretical aspects of the numerical methods will be of interest to a broad range of researchers working in the areas of numerical and computational methods in statistics and econometrics, parallel numerical algorithms, parallel computing and numerical linear algebra. The aim of this monograph is to promote research in the interface of econometrics, computational statistics, numerical linear algebra and parallelism.

Book Description
This book addresses the long absence of a satisfactory theory of macroeconomics. Keynesian theory is not consistent with rational self-interest, but neoclassical economics is unable to explain economic volatility and the trade cycle. Athol Fitzgibbons critiques the leading macroeconomic theories, which he believes are unduly mechanistic because they are incompatible with non-quantitative knowledge.
The author sketches the intellectual history of partial knowledge and judgement so far as these relate to macroeconomics, and rejects the claims that Keynes recanted the analysis of practical reason in his Treatise on Probability. Fitzgibbons's theme is the possibility of a new synthesis of Keynes and the neoclassical system. This stresses financial rationality, but it also recognizes that there is an element of indeterminacy in both government policies and the movements of the market.
Customer Reviews:
Fitzgibbons makes the same errors again.......2004-09-17
In 1988,Fitzgibbons(F)published his "Keynes's Vision".This book was based on three errors. The first error is the antinomian fallacy(no general theories are possible because all events or periods of history are unique due to constant change over time). The second error was a misreading of chapter 3 of the A Treatise on Probability(TP)on the quantitative measurement of probabilities.F follows in the footsteps of Frank Ramsey in his misbelief that by the terms "nonnumerical" and "nonmeasurable"Keynes meant that quantitative estimates of probabilities were not possible except in the rare case of symmetric evidence. In Part II of the TP(1921)Keynes made it very clear that by the terms nonnumerical and nonmeasurable he meant that a single numeral alone could not generally estimate the probability relationship. In general,it took TWO NUMERALS to estimate a probability.Keynes is the founder of the interval(set) approach to probability.F's third error is his misbelief that Keynes presented a general theory of macro economics that had no microfoundations in economic theory and that Keynes's theory has no mathematical model supporting it because Keynes supposedly believed that the economy was an"...interrelated swirl of events..."(p.139)where"...the impossibility of true causation make the economy so complex that in principle it is not representable by mathematics."(p.140).This is because it is not possible to separate the independent variables from the dependent variables.F concludes that"Keynes's macroeconomics seemingly drew its assumptions out of thin air,or at least without reference to any micro theory, because it is based on a probabilistic logic."(p.141).Contrary to F,Keynes's "probabilistic logic"is a general micro decision theoretic approach applicable to all areas of human endeavor where choices must be made and future consequences must be estimated based on present information that is partial in nature and/or incomplete.F's latest book ,published in 2002,incorporates all of the errors of the 1988 book. The following conclusion ,implicit in the earlier book,is made explicitly in the latest book:Keynes did not really have a general theory after all.Keynes had a vision based on his own personal political, social and ethical views of a moral society.Keynes's "general theory of macroeconomics" was in actuality a theory of moral sentiment dressed up in economic garb in order to persuade a reader of the General Theory that the conclusions Keynes reached on moral grounds had a sound basis in economic analysis. There are a number of other errors in the book.Only one will be covered in this review.F claims that Keynes's use of the term"uncertainty" means or translates as complete ignorance.Keynes never made any such definition. For Keynes, uncertainty ranges from complete uncertainty of evidence(ignorance)through partial or incomplete evidence to complete or certain evidence.Uncertainty can thus be measured on the unit interval from 0 to 1 in exactly the same way that Keynes measured the weight of the evidence,w,on the unit interval in the TP on p.315.Keynes then incorporated this index to measure the weight of the evidence into his decision rule c,which he called a"conventional coefficient of weight and risk".(0<=w<=1).F's claim that a new synthesis of Keynes and neoclassicals can be made based upon incomplete information ignores the fact that Keynes already accomplished such a synthesis in 1936 in the General Theory.

I've never been a fan of quiz books, and I also hadn't read all of the Travis McGee books when I stumbled across this, making it a slightly useless purchase for me. However, having now read the entire series, looking back at the quiz book is an amusing diversion. Not a must-have item, unless you're a fanatical fan of the McGee books. But if you are, definitely worth checking out.

What Video Games Have to Teach Us About Learning and Literacy
ASIN: 0520075706 |
Book Description
How do children today learn to understand stories? Why do they respond so enthusiastically to home video games and to a myth like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? And how are such fads related to multinational media mergers and the "new world order"? In assessing these questions, Marsha Kinder provides a brilliant new perspective on modern media.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant exploration of children's media culture........1998-08-24
This highly original analysis of children's interaction with media combines detailed descriptions of shows like "Muppet Babies" and "Garfield" with a sophisticated commentary on the global economy. In an age when most authors writing about children and the media talk only about violence, this book presents a much more comprehensive account of how media shape the way children perceive the world. It includes a fascinating and at times humorous description of her own son's interaction with media (television, movies, and video games) from infancy to age eight. It provides the only convincing account of why the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were so popular. No wonder "Mother Jones" chose it as one of a hundred books recommended to President Clinton on his assumption of the presidency. What is so satisfying about this book is that it is as entertaining to the layman--a must for parents--as it is to the specialist in cultural studies. In clear prose, Kinder makes all her material entirely accessible, without jargon.

Doctor Who Short Trips is a series of themed short story anthologies of new Doctor Who fiction, featuring the Doctor in all of his first eight incarnations. They feature stories written by some of the leading names in Doctor Who, past and present, including Paul Cornell, Gareth Roberts, Christopher H. Bidmead, and Paul Magrs. Past Tense features 17 tales set on Earth in days gone by. The Doctor finds himself and his fellow travellers in a variety of times and places: involved in international espionage with British and German spies, at the annexation of the Transvaal, watching an Ashes cricket match, and mixing with the late-16th Century theatrical set. Seeing history happen, learning about its nuances, trying to prevent its corruption, or simply enjoying its atmosphere, our heroes find themselves in exciting adventures wherever or whenever they go.

Customer Reviews:
Maybe 20 percent useful info, the rest you already know.......2007-03-31
I agree with reviewer Maggin and am astonished at the number of great reviews for this book. The author's friends? Any adult could write most of this book off the top of her head. Where to get funding: personal funds (DUH!), the bank (DUH!). How to fire an employee? Sigh. This is generic stuff, most is not about web hosting in particular. Same with suggestions for advertising. Maybe if you are a person with zero business experience you will benefit from some of the generic advice, but you'd do just as well with a book from your local library about starting a business in general. I returned this book in the next mail.
Verbal Self-Congratulations.......2007-02-08
Essentially the point of this book is to assert that hosting web pages for yourself and your friends creates its own secondary income streams. This book, for example, which the writer self-published and marketed through Amazon. It's encouraging to learn that self-publishing is actually a relatively worthwhile pursuit here in the twenty-first century, but it's not terribly useful to someone looking for a nuts-and-bolts account of web-hosting -- which is ostensibly what the book is about. Rah, rah, Chris; thrilled to hear it's working out so well for you, but I've got a life too. See you around.
Excellent reference.......2006-05-12
This is a book you'll want to keep near your PC for reference everyday. If you're serious about host a web site, you should also get "The Complete Web Hosting Kit Professional," which has TONS of practial how-to's as well as all the software you need to set up a web and e-mail server.
Best Web Hosting Book.......2006-01-24
This is by far the best book about starting a web hosting business that I have read. There is just not something comparable on the market. Easy to read "instructions" and the author leaves enough room for everyone to follow without over-loading the reader with information he might not need.
Web Hosting Manager a Good Resource.......2006-01-19
This book is one you'll want to keep on hand as a reference that you'll go back to again and again after your first read. I think it's an excellent companion to The Complete Web Hosting Kit Professional, which I also own. With the Web Hosting Manager you have a great "how to" and with the Complete Web Hosting Kit you have the software to do it.
