5 out of 5 stars Great for a New Runner.......2006-04-20

I ordered this running journal right before the new year and have found it to be indispensable for my training. The essays at the beginning of each month are inspirational and useful. I have been distance running for less than a year and find being able to look back on my progress to be very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!.......2005-03-23

My first exposure to this book was a used copy at a thrift store. I bought it any way because I loved the idea of keeping a journal of my running. As you go thru the journal you have plenty of space to record your run for each day and important details like where and how far you went, etc. I loved this!!! There are some really great parts to this journal though other than being well organized. It contains inspiring, funny quotes at the top of all almost every page. I really loved those! It has monthly essays (I guess you'ld call them) and neat pictures of other runners throughout the journal. I can't wait to get the 2005 version. I'm so excited!! Get it!!! It's money well spent!!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Log, But.......2004-12-30

I have been using this log since the 70's (when Jim Fixx wrote it) with a few misses for years I started looking for it too late. It has continued to be by far the best of the logs available from the points of view of layout, included features and the quality of the paper. I look forward to each month's essay and find every one to be interesting. The quotes are excellent and a number of them have become ones I use regularly. Most weeks (but not all) also have a running related fact or piece of advice. And, as noted in the reviews, each week features a photograph with an additional one each month. However, it is this feature that leads me to give the log 4 stars rather than 5. The 2004 log continued a trend I had noticed the last few years of including less and less "different" photographs. By different I mean that over 30 of the photographs in the 2004 log are of the same person and his friends or relatives (they appear in some together) running in Paris. Is it the author himself? It would seem to me that a little more effort could go into getting a truly diverse set of photos. They're certainly out there. Maybe even the monthly ones in color? They used to be. I admit, this was the case in the 2004 log. I haven't looked through the 2005 one yet, I look so forward to it unfolding over the year.

5 out of 5 stars Best Running Log Available.......2004-12-01

I have been buying this running log and calender for the past 10 years. The original author of this yearly log book, John Jerome past away 2 years ago, so his son Marty, has continued putting it together every year.

The best thing about the log is the calender days are already written in for you starting the last week of the previous year. It's very easy to log and keep track of you daily and weekly miles.

At the end of the log book is a place to list your races and track your 12 months of running. There is a marathon quick reference split times table and a full calender of the current and following year. Before each month, Jerome writes a personal running story about a page long which I find very uplifting. Also, he includes unique quotes before the start of each week.

I have viewed many running log books over the years. and this one is by far the best.

Book Description

The Spirit of Capitalism answers a fundamental question of economics, a question neither economists nor economic historians have been able to answer: what are the reasons (rather than just the conditions) for sustained economic growth? Taking her title from Max Weber's famous study on the same subject, Liah Greenfeld focuses on the problem of motivation behind the epochal change in behavior, which from the sixteenth century on has reoriented one economy after another from subsistence to profit, transforming the nature of economic activity. A detailed analysis of the development of economic consciousness in England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States allows her to argue that the motivation, or "spirit," behind the modern, growth-oriented economy was not the liberation of the "rational economic actor," but rather nationalism. Nationalism committed masses of people to an endless race for national prestige and thus brought into being the phenomenon of economic competitiveness.

Nowhere has economic activity been further removed from the rational calculation of costs than in the United States, where the economy has come to be perceived as the end-all of political life and the determinant of all social progress. American "economic civilization" spurs the nation on to ever-greater economic achievement. But it turns Americans into workaholics, unsure of the purpose of their pursuits, and leads American statesmen to exaggerate the weight of economic concerns in foreign policy, often to the detriment of American political influence and the confusion of the rest of the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Tough Book.......2002-10-18

As a past student of Boston University, let me say that Prof. Greenfeld is a scholar of the highest caliber. If conclusions from her review of history be difficult, even dubious, she is the first to review her work, admit ambiguity, and give to sociology nothing more than a stable investigation, employing the panorama of our traditions of thought. Conclusions will always be argued; Prof. Greenfeld however models technique. We can trust her books in a modern air where trust is a difficult friend. Her unrivalled unbias in her reading and writing deserve not a little honor.

5 out of 5 stars Important work, now more than ever.......2001-10-29

During the Clinton years, the foundation of American foreign policy seemed to be that economic growth was a natural phenomenon and that America needed only help other nations 'liberate' their markets. We did not take seriously enough the idea that economic growth is rooted in particular cultural norms, and that 'liberalization' without those norms would frequently lead to nothing but chaos and deep-seated anti-American resentment.

There is no justification for the attacks of September 11th, but one could argue that, under Clinton, America did not do enough to demonstrate that we stand for political as well as economic reform. This book, which I have read in manuscript form, is an important intellectual rebuttal to ideas that have tarnished America's name abroad.

5 out of 5 stars Correcting misconceptions.......2001-10-28

I have read an advance copy of this book, and feel obliged to comment on the erroneous PUBLISHERS WEEKLY review, found in the editorial reviews section of this page. It is apparent that the author of that review did not actually read the book.

The first sentence of the review states as fact a false position, that "beginning in 15th-century northern Europe, unprecedented economic growth spread throughout the world, bringing with it nationalism, technological progress and rationalism in government, religion, and justice, as well as eradication of traditional cultures, environmental damage, imperialism, and wars of unparalleled destructiveness." The book being reviewed argues that it was nationalism which caused the reorientation of the economy towards sustained economic growth. (Nationalism was the motive force behind modern capitalism.) The reviewer is putting the cart before the horse. The opening sentence is a statement of the reviewer's own position, and to contrast it with the central thesis of the book being reviewed (without evidence or counterargument of any kind) was in poor taste. But this is not the worst.

The reviewer asserts that the author "eschews both the historian's careful study of primary sources and the economist's insistence on rigorously testable models." The reviewer claims that instead Greenfeld relies on excerpts from secondary sources. This is plainly false. The majority of the book's evidence is primary-source material, all meticulously documented in the notes, which the reviewer apparently did not have time to read. Indeed, like the author's previous work, NATIONALISM: FIVE ROADS TO MODERNITY, this book is interesting and convincing, in part, because of the quantity and detail of empirical evidence it provides.

Third, the reviewer states that, allegedly according to the author, the 6 cases treated (England, Holland, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States) are unrelated. This is also, quite simply, false. The author draws tight connections between these cases. Indeed, she believes that nationalism (and it's refraction in the economic sphere) is fundamentally an idea. This idea began in one place (England) and was exported to the other cases under consideration (minus the Netherlands, where impressive early economic growth was both not sustained and not caused by nationalism), though it took very different forms in each. Given that so much of the story in each case is of the importation of the idea of the nation, it's reception and transformation, and it's impact upon the economic orientations of the social actors in each nation, it is absurd to claim that these cases are unrelated.

Finally, the reviewer makes the bizarre observation that this book is a "criticism of all aspects of the modern world" which will only have appeal to disgruntled readers. Frankly, I cannot imagine how on earth the reviewer got this impression. The book is not a critique of modernity, it does not issue value-judgements, and it most certainly does not condemn modern diet, work habits, and culture, as the reviewer would have us believe.

This is an excellent book. There is none other like it on the subject, both in terms of theoretical scope and detailed historical evidence. It is a captivating story, written in elegant prose. It should be of interest to economists, historians, political scientists, anthropologists, sociologists, and anyone who wants to understand the world in which we live.

        Book Description

Disruptive Divas: Feminism, Identity and Popular Music focuses on four female musicians who have marked contemporary popular culture in unexpected ways. Tori Amos, Courtney Love, Me'Shell Ndegéocello and P. J. Harvey have impelled and disturbed the boundaries of "acceptable" female musicianship. Disruptive Divas gives close readings to individual, representative songs by each of these artists, in order to make general statements about the role of women in popular music. The artists and songs selected explore a range of textural themes and musical studies. Disruptive Divas shows how this material has disrupted the general expectations of popular music style, performance and marketing; in turn, it helps to empower women to be creative artists.

Spliffs is written in british english so some of the slang may not make sense but don't let that sway you this is a great book. Including practically anything you ever wanted to know about marijuana and the delicate art of rolling spliffs (or joints). First read up on you marijuana history and learn things you never knew about your favorite smokable. Next take a look at an incredable collection of buds and hash from all around the world. Now after you clean up the puddle of drool at your feet you can experiment with some extraordinary joint rolling techniques. Although these can often be very time consuming they will make you the center of attention and get you way way way too stoned. You wont put the book down, that is untill your muscles have tensed up from excessive toking.

Everything that a smoker of marijuana could ask for. Buy it for your friends, your roommates, your boss or yourself. You wont regret it.

On the Firing Line: The Publi Life of Our Public Figures written by William F. Buckley, Jr. is about the interviews Buckley had on the televison show "Firing Line." Lasting for twenty-three years and hosted by Buckley, this book contains parts of those interesting shows.

You'll find a whole host of dramatis personae in this well written tome. As with the televison show, this book has concise and cogent reviews as Buckley tries to interview the men and women who actually think seriously and rigorously about the way we govern ourselves. I found a dry wit and humor in spots all to entertain, challange, inevitablely chiding at times, but always wickedly brilliant.

The list of people in this book reads like a who's who and covers the major issues of our time, as Buckley discusses , uses rhetorical tactics and techniques with sometimes unpredictable results. You will laugh is spots as hilarious dialogues engage you. This is a valuable witty and learned tome with discourses making wonderful reading.

If you were a fan of "Firing Line," then you'll really like this book complete with Buckley's own annotations giving this book a flavor all its own.

Who better to ease you into the detailed world of HTML coding (where even an errant spacebar can gum up your creative masterpiece) than well-known Web design instructor Lynda Weinman and her programmer brother, William. This book's first edition came out over 3 years ago, and the Web has changed a lot in that time. Novices will appreciate this HTML primer that not only helps in hand-coding Web pages but also in troubleshooting the HTML generated by WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors like Dreamweaver and GoLive and image/animation applications like Flash, Fireworks, Photoshop, and ImageReady.

Creative HTML Design.2 covers basic page structure, images and compression, color, links, buttons, transparency, typography, organization, style sheets, navigation, rollovers, forms, and other issues. (A good description of the first edition, including a sample chapter, can currently be found at www.lynda.com; this new edition will most likely be detailed there soon as well. They also maintain an errata section, important for any book that includes code.) Lynda Weinman's specialty is her friendly yet tech-savvy teaching style--there aren't many who can walk readers through the minutiae of client-side image map coordinates and not confuse them (or bore them to tears). Brother William[SS1], an engineer and programmer, presumably provides the finer points of HTML, plus the JavaScript and CGI scripts. The book offers all the good aspects of Weinman's other popular books: text that's affable yet clear, with a view to anticipating problems beginners may stumble into; lesson projects that are neither too complex nor aesthetically amateur; and a book layout that doesn't crowd pages, but rather serves up ministeps and clearly captioned screen shots in easily digested morsels.

With editors that do it all--like Dreamweaver and GoLive--why would a non-tech-head Web designer want to learn HTML? As Weinman explains, "The advantage of knowing and understanding HTML is that you are in better control of knowing what is possible and what is not." Even if you use an HTML editor, you will at some point have to go "under the hood" and fix troubled code, and at this point even a little familiarity can make a big difference in relieving Web design stress. --Angelynn Grant

International best-selling author, Lynda Weinman, circles back to update this HTML guide and to add her unique creative energy and wisdom to The first edition is best known for its unique quality of combining solid design with coding technique and HTML theory. This second edition will incorporate the significant changes in Web tools and technology since this original edition published in December 1997. Updated content includes coverage of Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, GoLive! and more! In standard Lynda Weinman style, you will find easy reading, straightforward talk - practical "how to's" that reads like you expect her to talk -- with just the right amount of coding and technical coverage to provide you with a solid HTML guide.

I didn't really read this book because I didn't need the information yet, but I think it's a great book to have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars On the short list.......2003-03-01

Five stars. I recommend to any one getting started with the creation of web sites. This book should be on the short list of books to read for creating websites. It covers more than html, and that is good. I benefited from reading it after having taken courses in web design and web programming. Reading it would be also be excellent preparation for taking a web related course. Several of its strengths are: it is co-authored by a graphic designer and techie/programmer (brother and sister), it includes a CD with the files referenced in the book, in includes an excellent html reference section, and there are a number of exercises. As many exercise as there are I would have liked more. The copyright date is 2001. I did not identify any soft spots but would estimate its shelf life will expire the end of 2003. That is the way it is with books about topics such as this. Even then it is should be a solid reference for a number of years.

3 out of 5 stars Beginner's Guide to NOT SO CREATIVE HTML.......2001-11-09

When I was told that this book was going to be used for my technology class I was kind of excited because I am fairly familiar with the Lynda.com material. I had picked up her Learning Flash 5 CD-ROM and walked away with a feeling that it was money well spent, and that I had come away with a great deal of knowledge about Flash. Now keeping this in mind, when I picked up this title and read through it (mind you unlike some reviewers I read cover to cover), I did not feel like there was too much content that I could walk away with and use in any real world situtation. The techniques she used, produced very amateur-like pages that would not pass for a high school student's work. Mind you, for some of the fundamental HTML concepts the book was good, but for any real world stuff I felt like I was lookig at those pages where you know the person made it in Frontpage 98' without the plug-ins. Any of the cool stuff like the Javascript Rollovers was gone over so rushed and with so little detail, that it would have been better to have omitted it from the book. I am sorry this book just really was not worth the money.. I would look to that HTML Quickstart book over this one any day.

4 out of 5 stars Good Combination of Design and Code for Beginners.......2001-09-27

I like the idea of combining a designer and a developer to create an HTML book. The "family reunion" at the front of the book is banal and adds nothing to the book, but once by that, it's pretty smooth sailing.

What the book successfully does is to show that creating a good Web site is not a matter of simply knowing the code but correctly preparing the graphics and working them into HTML. They use PhotoShop 6, but I was able to fumble through using an older version of PhotoShop and even Fireworks for readying the graphics. The exercises are helpful and simple enough for beginners.

Some of the chapters, like one on bullets and horizontal rules was a bit overblown even for beginners. However, the bulk of the book is a gentle path to working with HTML and graphics. The online site (Ducks in a Row) is only so-so design wise, and the CD files needed for the exercises aren't always complete but enough to work through the exercises. The chapter on transparencies in GIF files was excellent and contained lots of good information and exercises.

My favorite part of the book lies in the Appendices. The authors compile the tags and their associated attributes in several tables so it is a good reference for later use at a more advanced level. They did not include every Maverick tag and attribute that Netscape and Microsoft like to drop in but stuck with the W3C standard as far as I could see.

Overall, when a beginner is finished with this book she'll be ready for intermediate level material for developing Web sites, and if that is the book's goal, it accomplishes it nicely.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for everyone - REALLY everyone!.......2001-08-02

The book covers all the topics you may encounter while designing a web page, whether it's a simple personal one, or a complex site. The layout of the book is great, it's easy to find everything and includes a comprehensive HTML 4.01 reference. Lots and lots of examples in the book and on the CD, so you see everything in action while you're learning the techniques. Great for both beginners and those with a knowledge of HTML, because it is so comprehensive, you will no doubt find many many things that you haven't learned yet or are not aware of.
