Funny thing..........2007-06-02
Chantal, my Californian 11-year-old niece, ask me to complete her collection of this story, so I order this item as first step because the box that contains the books looks great to me. When my niece recieve it, I ask her to show me the box which in my point of view contains a very good illustration job, and she told me that she dropped the box. Intrigated I ask her why she did that and she answer:-Because I don't want to have the ugly Olaf's face in my house....
These books are great.......2007-05-31
The family loves these books from Lemony Snicket. We can't wait for the next ones.
Major let down........2007-01-07
I bought these books (actually the first three box sets) on the recommendation of a friend. But I messed up, this was not what she said. I muddled through each of the 9 books because I will not give up and feel it would be a waste of my money to throw them away. But truly, I would have rather spent my time getting a root canal, or being anally probed by aliens. These books are horrible! He warns you, but you figure it's in jest and there will be a point, or an upside to them. There's not. The movie however, is entertaining. Go figure. Check them out from the library if you're really that curious, but don't waste your money.
Great series.......2006-03-10
My 14 yr old daughter who does not care to read has loved this series. She struggled thru volumes 4-6, but breezed thru 7-9 and is looking forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended from my standpoint.
"Of all the ridiculous expressions people use...one of the most ridiculous is 'No news is good news.'".......2005-12-30
THE VILE VILLAGE: BOOK 7 - Thanks to the evil Count Olaf, all of the Baudelaire's distant relatives refuse to take them in, for fear of being dragged into some unfortunate demise, like the rest of the distant relatives who opened their homes to the Baudelaire's. Hence, the three Baudelaire Orphans - Violet, 14; Klaus, now 13; and Sunny, a baby not much larger than a watermelon - have been enrolled in a program where they will be raised by an entire village, due to the saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." The children quickly choose the village "V.F.D." as their new home, for it is these three initials that the Quagmire Triplets shouted to them before they disappeared once again. However, the Baudelaire's are quite let-down by what they find in "V.F.D." They are forced to live with Hector, a man who has a secret library, a secret inventing studio - they are secret because the "V.F.D." Council of Elders have made them against the law, along with thousands of other rules; if broken you will be burned at the stake, or imprisoned - and loves to cook Mexican food. While he's very kind to the Baudelaire's, when they are accused of murder and thrown in jail, he doesn't defend them or even give them an alibi. Now it's up to the three Orphans to use their strength to escape from jail and find their friends the Quagmires, before it's too late.
THE HOSTILE HOSPITAL: BOOK 8 - The Baudelaire Orphans - Violet, Klaus, and Sunny - are up to their ears in bad luck, and it looks as if their luck is about to grow worse. The three Orphans are on the run from the police, after being falsely accused of murdering Jacques Snicket, a man who was trying to give them some very important information, that would help their situation very much. Unfortunately, he met his untimely demise before he could reveal his secret, and now the Orphans are trying to hide from both the police - who would love to arrest them, pronto - and the evil Count Olaf. The Orphans, looking for a hiding place, hop in a van with the VFD: Volunteers Fighting Disease, who spend each and every day of the week visiting Heimlich Hospital, in an attempt to cheer up patients by singing them a rather annoying song, and handing out heart-shaped balloons. At Heimlich, Violet, Klaus and Sunny are immediately put to work in the office area, where they shall spend time filing paperwork. All is fine, until the Orphans find a file about their very own family, and Count Olaf decides to perform a very grim operation on Violet, that will render her lifeless, if she does not escape.
THE CARNIVOROUS CARNIVAL: BOOK 9 - When you are a Baudelaire sibling, you do not dream of fun days at the carnival, eating cotton candy, and playing games in which you could possibly win prizes. No, as a Baudelaire orphan, you are usually trying to escape the greedy, murderous Count Olaf, and doing crazy things, such as dressing up as a freak, which is exactly what Violet, Klaus, and Sunny must do in Snicket's ninth Unfortunate Event. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny have found that Count Olaf and his troop of bandits are residing at the House of Freaks. So to ensure that they have a roof over their head, and food in their stomachs, the three Baudelaires pose as freaks and get jobs at the Carnival. But when they and their fellow freaks are informed that one of them will be thrown into a pit of hungry lions, the three Baudelaires must find a way to escape from the Carnival. But there's only one problem...escaping is impossible when Count Olaf and his cronies are involved.
Having been an avid reader of A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS since the release of THE BAD BEGINNING, it is hard to believe that Lemony Snicket has been able to keep the attention of readers, by coming up with even more miserable things for the Baudelaire orphans to deal with. But he has done just that with books 7, 8, and 9, by introducing new bizarre characters and strange ordeals that the Baudelaires must overcome. THE DILEMMA DEEPENS is one of the best boxed sets for A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS available at the moment, as book 9 features a cliffhanger ending, that will leave all readers scrambling for Book 10: THE SLIPPERY SLOPE. Snicket has done it again, and introduced even more misery into the world of children's fiction. Misery that will keep you pleased for hours upon hours.

Book Description
To succeed in business today, an individual must be smart, competitive, resilient, tenacious, and fearless. In short, he or she needs a good, old-fashioned backbone. In How to Grow a Backbone, Susan Marshall, a top business consultant and former executive, outlines skills that readers can develop and perfect to become stronger, more confident, and more influential on the job. Using straight talk laced with wry humor, the author draws upon actual business situations from a variety of companies and industries to show how a strong backbone can change not only the outcome of the situation, but also how one is perceived.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty effective book with a very nuts and bolts approach.......2005-09-22
Encountered it first as an audio book and then decided to buy it as a print book. The book is small in size but has an impactful message. How to be assertive and cooperative at the same time. Very useful tips on how to achieve both in the workplace. Highly recommend it for people like me who cave in on pursuing their agenda in our current corporate culture.
Wow! This author doesn't kid around..........2005-01-16
After finishing Disc 1 of 7 it's a thorough pleasure to hear a practical approach to career development. While attitude is great, sooner or later the rubber hits the road. Ms Marshall provides excellent guidance for what to do in real, modern, business situations.
Put it on your list.......2001-05-17
I found this book to be different than the typical management book. Rather than filled with the usual platitudes, it contains some real world advice on how to deal with and capitalize on situations that occur in a corporate environment. The book starts a bit slow, but it gets moving once it gets into the 10 strategies. The author has a nice conversational, straight-talking style of writing. The exercises and advice at the end of each chapter are excellent. I would recommend this book for new graduates starting in management and for seasoned veterans.
How to Grow a Backbone.......2000-10-04
This is a must read for anyone that wants to move further faster in the business world -- especially those who are fledglings in Corporate America! Marshall writes with clarity and good humor spiced with pithy observations and examples. This is more than a pie-in-the-sky, ethereal how-to book. She backs up her advice with practical, easy to implement ACTIONS to integrate the strategies into all areas of interactions with others. And her "excercises" are more than informative and effective: they're fun to boot!
Everything you can be.......2000-09-26
Marshall has written an exceptional book, a smart and practical book that reflects a very intelligent and perceptive grasp of business action and the people who are the action-eers. People run businesses and businesses are only as good as the people that run them. "How To Grow A Backbone" is at once very revealing and very familiar. We will all find ourselves somewhere in this book...for better or worse. We may smile or grimace at the unerring precision with which Marshall cuts straight to the bone, through all the usual fat, and shows us how much backbone we really have, I really have, you really have. Most important, she shows us how to grow what we're missing. Every CEO should read this book and then issue it to his staff, to everyone on the staff including the mail boy and the sweeper. If that CEO is big enough, smart enough (and secure enough) to encourage, to allow, to require, to inspire, his people to grow backbone, that boss will have one hell of a spinning business. Action, forward motion, innovation and fun the way business should be fun, going a mile a minute, breaking through. Everyone who dreams of being more than they are, or of being a CEO, should quit dreaming and dig into "Backbone". This is no "guru magic" that pumps you up for a week, this is the straight answer for anyone who has the courage to try to be what he or she can be. Miss Marshall will show you the way. "How To Grow A Backbone" is a lean, no nonsense bible for the feint of heart who want to grow the lion inside them. It's more than a business book. It's for anyone who hears their Jiminy Cricket whispering, you could have, you should have, why didn't you? Anyone who wants to know how to grow the seeds of character we all possess, who wants to be somebody, must read "How To Grow A Backbone". WARNING: Read only if you want to be better than you are.

Contains Inspiring Quotes.......2005-02-06
A true friend unbosoms freely, advises justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeably. ~William Penn
Laura's life proves we can make it through almost any situation life tosses our way. Through the Rocky Road and into the Rainbow Sherbet is one of my favorite Laura Jensen Walker books. I found so much I could relate to and this particular book has some amazingly collectable quotes.
I did have to laugh when Laura explains how a scoop of French vanilla ice cream and chocolate cake helps to put a new perspective on situations. I admire her willingness to analyze her life and make the right decisions. She also keeps a lovely sense of humor in her marriage, although I think she defiantly married her soul mate.
With chapter titles like "It's my Parfait and I'll cry if I want to," we learn about Laura's life, her trials and her loves. There are little "scoops for thought" that present some collectible advice for future consideration.
This book is filled with quotes (I found 7 new ones I loved), stories of travel in Europe, childhood memories, insight, personal life experience and humor. The contents of Through the Rocky Road and into the Rainbow Sherbet melts together into a delicious read.

Humor & Pathos the Old-Fashioned Way.......2003-03-31
When I was a little girl, one of my favorite past-times was eating ice cream made the old-
fashioned way-hand-cranked by Daddy. He used only the finest ingredients like real cream,
sugar, and fresh strawberries. We were blissfully unaware of fat grams. Thank goodness
laughter isn't fattening, or I would be several sizes larger having devoured Through the Rocky
Road and Into the Rainbow Sherbert by quintessential Christian comedienne, Laura Jensen
Walker. She writes the old-fashioned way, using only the finest ingredients like humor,
creativity, and wit. But just as rock salt is necessary for congealing ice cream, Walker adds
generous scoops of pathos that pave life's rocky roads with depth and honesty. She openly
writes about pain-the untimely deaths of her father and brother, rejection at the altar by her
fiancé, her masectomy, and brush with contemplated suicide. Yet Laura is a survivor. She has
received the rocks life dishes out with an upturned spoon and open heart-with courage, and
confidence in the God who controls it all. Because of the bitter, she appreciates life's sweetness
all the more. Because of the rain, she savors the rainbows.

Parenting expert/author comments on Rocky Road book.......2002-09-10
I like short reads. I wrote a short read. Through the Rocky Road is a delicious collection of short reads about joy, hope, disappointment, learning, love, sadness and laughter. It's one of those keep-by-the-side-of-the-bed books you can pick up, enjoy a portion, then go on with your day digesting its message. The author shares true stories and reveals her humanness in a way that anyone can relate to. This is not an advice book but one of gentle, encouraging navigation through the rocky roads of life.
Substantive and Sweet!.......2002-08-26
With warmth, humor, and real experience, Laura Jensen Walker tugs at your heart and invites you to think about your own life with her stories. As the best of teachers do, this author shares meaningful life learnings without preaching or lecturing. You can turn to any chapter of this book for inspiration, but you'll find yourself wanting to read it from cover to cover. Walker encourages us to discover the best for ourselves from any situation, a strategy that teaches optimism, builds faith, and encourages hope. Do your friends a favor; don't just loan them your copy, buy them one of their own!
No Ice Cream Overload Here!.......2002-08-22
Laura Jensen Walker's book, "Through the Rocky Road and into the Rainbow Sherbet" is a page turner that leaves you feeling like you've become one of her new best friends. I actually felt as if I'd been with Laura at her kitchen table, sipping tea (along with slurpping all those wonderful ice cream sundaes) while she shared all the important ups and downs, and bits and pieces of her soul. She's a story teller who packs a punch and leaves the reader feeling satisfied...lip-smacking good, satisfied.
Book Description
The long-awaited second audio recording by the Hopeful Gospel Quartet--Robin and Linda Williams, Kate MacKenzie, and Garrison Keillor--is old-time gospel singing at its best. Recorded live during broadcasts of Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, it features instrumentals by Butch Thompson, Chet Atkins, and others. 13 tracks include: "Climbing Up on the Rough Side," "How Great Thou Art," and "Just a Closer Walk with Thee." Good-time music from live broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion The gospel quartet and radio band known to millions of listeners nationwide
Customer Reviews:
Truly a hopeful album.......2000-11-22
Here is more from the Hopeful Gospel Quartet. Although I adore Garrison, I'm glad he is just singing and not talking in this album, unlike the other album featuring the quartet. I love listening to this encouraging album. "Life Is a Ball Game" is the only song that rubs me the wrong way, a little too juvenile. But the rendition of "I bid you goodnight" is so incredibly sweet. "How great thou art" and "Just a closer walk with thee" are two more songs that are beautifully done by this quartet. It is hard to find simple gospel sounds and the old hymns featured on this album are worth the money.

step by step guide for newcomers to eBay.......2005-09-11
This is the latest in the successful QuickSteps series from McGraw Hill. The authors strive to show how eBay can be very easy to sell items on. And certainly the emphasis is on selling, not buying. When you hear of people having a livelihood on eBay, invariably it centres around selling.
The book is lavishly illustrated, with heavily annotated screenshots from eBay's pages, to show you the key steps in selling. The first few times can indeed be awkward. Many complications, like do you already have a PayPal account, to accept payments in? Strictly, you don't need this. But many buyers like to pay this way, and having it can enhance your sales.
The book also shows how good pictures of your items can boost the number of bids and the eventual winning price. Again, none of this is difficult, if you know what to do, and methodically go through it, step by step.
