Book Description
In recent years, choice no-fault has emerged as a popular but controversial proposal for addressing the problem of high automobile insurance rates. Choice plans offer consumers the option of a lower-cost insurance policy with restrictions on filing lawsuits or a higher-cost policy with full tort rights. Some American states have implemented choice programs, and major federal choice legislation is now pending in the United States Congress.
Choice no-fault has caught the attention of policy makers, the insurance industry, and academics. Until now, however, no single book has pulled together the available research on the topic.
The Economics
and Politics of Choice No-Fault Insurance fills that gap. Edited by scholars from different disciplines, each of whom has written extensively on automobile insurance issues, the book includes some of the best work in the area. Former Massachusetts Governor and presidential candidate Michael S. Dukakis wrote the foreword.
Contributors include University of Virginia Law Professor Jeffrey O'Connell, widely considered the `father of no-fault,' as well as authors of the influential RAND study of the potential effects of choice no-fault on insurance rates. The book chapters, most of which were written especially for this volume, cover topics ranging from the impact of choice no-fault on accidents and driving behavior, to the effects of choice on medical care usage, to alternative approaches for resolving accidents involving both `no-fault' and `tort' electors, to the political feasibility of choice legislative proposals. Emphasis on the potential advantages of choice no-fault is balanced by consideration of possible ill effects.

Social democratic maundering.......2004-07-06
This book exposes the Labour Government's Thatcherite nature. At the last election, the Times backed Labour as the best option for `consolidating the core aspects of Thatcherism and extending them to fresh areas of policy'. This government aims to strengthen capitalism, and continues to destroy our industry and privatise services even Thatcher did not touch.
Grieve Smith proposes that the Government should change its basic policy and instead promote growth and full employment by using fiscal policy to stimulate demand. For one, this is as realistic as asking Thatcher to approve of socialism; for another, the Maastricht Treaty rules this out. As he acknowledges, "The whole concept of an integrated fiscal and monetary policy is vitiated by the fact that Article 7 of the Treaty specifically forbids the Council from influencing the European Central Bank in any way." The EU meant the Bank to be deaf.
Grieve Smith writes of `the almost completely monetarist framework for the future of European integration in the Treaty of Maastricht'. But it is not `almost completely' monetarist: it is completely monetarist. He is trying to imply that the Treaty leaves an opening for his proposals to be implemented. (Economists too often ignore policies that block their proposals.) To implement good policies, we must reject the Treaty; instead, he urges more EU integration! He opposes joining the euro, but then urges us to join a new Exchange Rate Mechanism, the EU's route into the euro.
One very interesting proposal stands out - for hypothecated revenues to be earmarked to pay for certain services. This idea, combined with referenda that would enable us, not the government, to choose where our money goes, has great democratic potential.
At the root of all our problems is capitalism, which cannot be made good any more than a shark can be made into a goldfish. But Grieve Smith accepts capitalism, merely proffering fantasies of reforming the IMF, the EU and the World Bank. We need not a new economic agenda but a new political agenda, rejecting the social democratic belief that capitalism can be reformed so that it works.

JD fans, get this!.......2004-06-01
Being a huge JD fan, and a guitar player, I felt compelled to buy the song book. I wish all the songs had tabulature however, since I currently cannot read standard notation. I also wish Cherry Lane had put some additional John Denver photo's and other stories from others. The book is good and I recommend it to anyone who is a JD fan will get a lot out of it.
I would have given this 5 stars, but due to the things mentioned above, I feel like 4 is fair.
Sure do miss the music and the man!
Book Description
"A great American institution"; "the bane of feminist ideology"; "a cornucopia of corn"; "the world's largest source of scholarship for women"--whatever the descriptor, few are neutral about the Miss America Pageant. Live from Atlantic City traces the pageant's history from its birth as pseudoevent in 1920 through its emergence as American popular culture icon. Although millions watch the pageant on television each year, Live from Atlantic City proposes that it is more than just a television show. Long before, after, and, some might argue, in spite of, television coverage, "a carnival of beauty ran riot on [Atlantic City's] famous Boardwalk." With or without the cameras, "bevies of sea nymphs," "beach peaches," and coeds have paraded up and down runways hoping to win a slice of the American dream. Indeed, long before, after, and very far away from the camera's dissecting lens, protesters have dissented, feminists picketed, and Miss America "wannabees" have frolicked on the fringes. Evidently, there's more to the pageant than meets the TV's eye. Live from Atlantic City takes the reader to times and places where no television camera has focused. Drawing upon (and sometimes debating with) primary and secondary sources, the author paints a vivid picture of life in Atlantic City during pageant week--whether that week be in 1944 or 1984. More than just chronicling events, the author also presents two opposing perspectives on the pageant: the pageant as celebration and idealization of American womanhood; the pageant as sexist, exploitative anachronism.

A Book That Misses the Forest for the Trees.......2006-10-22
After reading this book, I found myself disappointed with an author that seemed to miss opportunity after opportunity for insightful analysis and instead focused on the minutiae of, say, the banter between an M.C. and a pageant contestant in a decades old tape of the Miss America pageant. Unless one is for some reason in need of highly detailed information on the proceedings of past Miss America pageants, I would suggest looking elsewhere for a book about beauty pageant culture.

definitive history of pageants.......2001-04-26
If you are looking for a coffee table book, this is not it. If you are looking for a book on tips for winning pageants, this is not it. If you are looking for a detailed, fully documented history of the Miss America Pageant then L.F.A.C. is your book. It is not only specific and insightful, but also looks at the pageant's evolution as a media event. It is scholarly in its approach.
Live from Atlantic City: A History of the Miss America Page.......2001-03-18
Riverol's research and preparation for writing this book seems almost exhaustive, but his presentation is unexciting and repetitive. With only 96 pages of text to read, 25 pages of photographs, 15 pages of footnotes, 9 pages of "works cited" and 5 pages of index , the book seems unbalanced, but Riverol admits in his foreword that this is a "scholarly" study. The most interesting portion of the book is his "Preliminary Thoughts" which speaks of how and why beauty pageants arose in history. After this initial chapter, he goes through each decade of the pageant, beginning with the 1920's. We learn from him when talent became a factor, when the "Miss Congeniality" Award began and why it was stopped in 1975, and other important changes along the way, but he only lightly discusses incidents with the contestants and winners and there is almost no dialogue in the book. Instead we see repeated program lineups, lists of preliminary winners, and finalists, in at least six key pageants. The changes that TV brought are shown as well as how the pageant survived ups and downs such as the Vanessa Williams Penthouse incident and the feminists' protests. This history of the American icon which is also the largest scholarship program for women ends at 1992, the copyright date of the book.
Book Description
Over the Top Judaism offers criticism of scores of television episodes and films, mainly between 1980 and 2002, that highlight the beliefs and practices of Judaism, real or perceived. Author Elliot Gertel examines parallels and precedents in both media, and organizes the works topically, concluding with the most promising efforts. Chapters on classic television episodes cite interviews with writers and producers from Gertel's rare oral histories.
Customer Reviews:
Cleaning the airwaves for Jewish viewers of film and televis.......2005-04-21
This is definitely a book for all who have a television or have gone to the movies. It works on two levels, nostalgia and teaching about Judaism. Published in 2003, it covers popular productions from the last 23 years. The first level is that of nostalgia because it covers many television shows and films with Jewish characters or themes, a trip down memory lane.
The second level, that of teaching, contrasts what we have viewed with undistorted Judaism and Jewish culture. It is here that Rabbi Gertel chides rather than lectures, contrasting the production with what might have been told or explained.
Taking us step by step thru plots and character development, we learn why the cliches are wrong and harmful to the community's view of Jews and Judaism. Credit is given to those who have presented accurate view of Bar Mitzvahs, Conversions, Minyans, Yom Kippur, etc.
You will find yourself moving from one remembered show to another, contrasting what was shown to true Judaism on shows like L.A. Law, Seinfeld, Sisters, Northern Exposure, and films such as A Stranger Among Us.
The content and writing style will appeal to both the academic and general reader. It can successfully be used for Jewish Community Center classes and other discussion groups.

CCIE Routing and Switching Flash Cards
Reviewer: Glenn Bradley, Senior Network Engineer
Reviewer Certification: CCDA, CCNA, CCNP, ISSP
Rating: 4 out of 5
This text and flash card format is a great "last 30 days before the test" tool. If you've been preparing for your written or have plans to, remember this book. I chose a method that may work for some and not for others.
I took the four exam method to achieve my CCNP. I did this because it was more important to me to have an in depth understanding of the four primary disciplines than it was to get through the process quickly. I didn't want any gaps in my knowledge base as I prepared for the CCIE written.
I came straight off the CCNP completion and went into a 90 day high intensity self study program that basically occupied all my free time. I passed with (a little) room to spare but would have loved to have this book for my last 30 days of prep time.
Be sure to understand that this book is a study aid. It will in no way prepare you for the exam in and of itself. However, used in conjunction with a solid, well rounded study plan, it will increase your chances of success substantially.
The limited text preceding each chapter and the more in depth discussions of specific technologies that follow each chapter are well written and right to the point. I did not feel that I was reading a lot of fluff that some authors use to make it appear that there is greater value in the material being presented.
I give the book 4 out of 5. As mentioned earlier; the audience would include those just completing their CCNP and planning to go directly for the CCIE written in order to hang onto the more elusive details that we all learn just before an exam. Some folks may be planning to take the written directly as they are already functioning at the CCNP level. This text will help fill in the blanks they may have by not having the benefit of preparing for and taking the CCNP tests.
A small start..........2005-08-16
This book barely scratches the surface of the preparation required for the CCIE R&S written. The test has a considerable amount of minutia, some of which isn't even covered in the Cisco documentation. There are a number of topics on the test that not only aren't discussed in depth in this book, but actually aren't discussed at all. And of course it will in no way prepare you for the questions where you know the answer, but its not on the list (Cisco is notorious for that).
But its a start...and the test engine is an easy way to memorize the minutia that it does cover. Just don't expect that this book hints on all the topics that will be on the test.
Good book, but poor service.......2005-07-14
I purchased this book about a month ago and have found the material to be well suited to the purpose of reviewing the material in a condensed fashion. One bit of warning, however. I purchased this book mainly because of the advertised flashcard software for Pocket PC. Because I travel so much, I thought studying CCIE material would be a productive use of my down time. I was very chagrined to learn that the software doesn't install successfully on my Pocket PC. The CD touts support from Cisco Press and urges you to register with them but as far as I can see this is more for marketing purposes than as an opportunity to support the user. I even took the trouble of browsing the errata at the Cisco Press website and emailing the address they listed for book support but didn't receive a response from them. The material is good, but I have been sorely disappointed about not receiving what I was promised. For the price of this book, they really should deliver.
Great for CCIE Written prep.......2005-05-06
Let me first start by saying I was bummed to learn that my CCIE written had expired. Needless to say I had to retake the written. I picked up this exam pack in order to help me do quick refresher on topics that I had become dormant in. The Authors Anthony Sequeira and Kevin Wallace exam pack was just what I needed.
You are presented three ways of reviewing the material. These include 500+ flash cards, a pdf book and a test engine with 650 questions.
The flash cards were pretty good, and I normally hate them ( except when I was in 6th grade). The cards help as another way of reviewing the material in order to cement the knowledge you are reviewing. The flashcards are very in-depth cards that do help with your review
My favorite and I feel the best material you can use are the practice test. With over 650 questions it's like taking 6 CCIE Written exams before the real exam. I have always used practice questions to help prepare for the test I take. The questions are great for finding out if you really know the material. The questions are divided into topics so that you can test on them all or just the ones you select. This is perfect if you are good in one area but need more review in others.
The Quick reference pdf consist of short potent chapters geared for quick reference. These chapters get right to the heart of the topics. This is great if you are just needing the facts without all the fluff.
I passed my Written on first attempt using this exam. I have years of experience and a few test under my belt. So I can say that this is a very good for preparing the written. I would highly recommend it to anyone needing to review and prepare for Written.
