Book Description
DARKNESS THREATENS to overtake Earthsea. As the world and its wizards are losing their magic, Ged -- powerful Archmage, wizard, and dragonlord -- embarks on a sailing journey with highborn young prince, Arren. They travel far beyond the realm of death to discover the cause of these evil disturbances and to restore magic to a land desperately thirsty for it.
With millions of copies sold,
Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea Cycle has earned a treasured place on the shelves of fantasy lovers everywhere. Complex, innovative, and deeply moral, this quintessential fantasy sequence has been compared with the work of J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis, and has helped make Le Guin one of the most distinguished fantasy and science fiction writers of all time. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A little more interesting than The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore is a story of the older Ged. He is now an archmage, and has come to the realisation that magic is slowly disappearing, and that to ordinary people, this does not matter a whole lot.
Ged ends up on what to him is a quixotic quest, along with a young prince, to see what is going on.
Awesome.......2007-05-30
I loved the first two but this is really great too! I cant decide which is my favorite The Farthest Shore or the Tombs of Atuan. Ged is the best. i would recommend this highly.
"I Do Not Mistake You for Any Finished Thing...".......2006-11-25
The third book in what is known as the "Earthsea Cycle," this installment takes place a number of years after "A Wizard of Earthsea" (in which the character Ged was a boy) and "The Tombs of Atuan" (in which he was a grown man). Now he is edging into late middle-age as the Archmage of the Wizards, and a much younger man has come to the island of Roke, seeking his aid.
Arren is a young prince of the isle of Enlad, eager to serve and awe-struck at the great wizard Ged, but he comes with sobering news. Magic is leaking out of the world, leaving imbalance and chaos in its wake, news that matches reports that the wizards have been receiving from all over Earthsea. A wizard council is held, and Ged announces that he will go forth to find the cause of the magical entropy, and stop it if he can. The untried Arren pledges himself to Ged and his mission, and - despite the trepidation of the other wizards - the two set out to find the symptoms, effect and cause of the plague upon Earthsea.
What they find is sobering. Without magic (defined in this fantasy world as knowledge of "True Names" for people, places and objects) all meaning and purpose is draining from the world. Wizards are going mad for want of their true identities and spells of all kinds are being forgotten by those who have used them for countless years. People are suffering from a lack of interest in living; and as the mage and prince gather clues to the mystery, Ged decides that the problem must be centred on an individual with an unnatural desire for immortality. But where to find such a man? The two must travel to the Farthest Shore - into death itself to defeat their foe and restore the balance to the world.
"The Farthest Shore" is generally considered the best of the "Earthsea Cycle" (although le Guin continues to surprise her readers by churning out another novel set in this fantasy-world just when we think she's done), an accumulation of all the themes and plot-points established in the first two installments. Her established mythology concerning both the history of the islands and the workings of magic are used to excellent effect, and elements that were left upon in the previous books (the empty throne in Havnor, Ogion's prophecy, Ged's relationship with the dragons) are all brought to their logical conclusions.
Le Guin's language is beautiful, effortlessly evoking the cultures of each island, life on the open water and the dull dreariness of the realm of the dead, where "those who had died for love passed each other in the streets." Likewise, her imagination seems to know no limits; my particular favourite was her depiction of "the children of the sea", a community that lives entirely on floating rafts, coming ashore only once a year to replenish their wood supply.
Ged is now beginning to show his age; no longer being the prideful and impetuous youth he was in "A Wizard of Earthsea", his hair is greying and his physique weakening. But with age comes wisdom, and in many ways we are seeing Ged in his prime, especially when compared to the impatience and inexperience of Arren. I cannot bring to mind any other fantasy series that follows our protagonist from youth to old age (the great percentage stop when the hero reaches maturity, leaving the aging process as part of the "happily ever after") and it is for that reason I find the "Earthsea" cycle so unique. This is a person's entire lifetime we are experiencing, not just their youth; making it a much richer and deeper reading experience.
Anyone who considers themselves a fantasy connoisseur should pick up "The Farthest Shore", as well as "A Wizard of Earthsea" and "The Tombs of Atuan". Though not my favourite of all the fantasy series ever written, it is refreshingly unique and beautifully told.
"Agni, Lebannen!".......2006-10-19
While not as detailed or as ornate as THE LORD OF THE RINGS, LeGuin's Earthsea Cycle is considered among the finest of the Sword and Sorcery classics. THE FARTHEST SHORE is the third book in the Cycle.
THE FARTHEST SHORE is the most ambitious of the first three books in the Cycle. Another quest novel, it touches on themes of life, death, power, authority, youth and maturation.
In THE FARTHEST SHORE, Ged (now Archmage) and Lebannen, the young uncrowned King of Earthsea, are pitted against the wizard Cob, who has discovered the key to eternal life, really a kind of joyless undeath that saps the world of everything meaningful. In undoing Cob's evil, Ged loses his power, while Lebannen comes into his own.
Somewhat too heavily laced with symbolism, THE FARTHEST SHORE is still the most powerful of the early Earthsea novels. LeGuin's dragons, in particular, are amazing creatures unlike any other in Sword and Sorcery literature: "Dragons are dreams..."
Another Earthsea book...........2006-04-21
Rating this book was quite difficult for me. Overall, I would rate this book 3.5/5. Well, I had to round it down to 3 stars since I obviously cannot rate it 3.5 on the rating scale.
For me, this book was difficult to understand at some parts, mostly at the end of the story. The beginning of the book is easy to understand; Le Guin made it flow well. The story is about Arren, a young soon to be prince of Enlad(but at the end of the story he is crowned in Havnor). Ged(Sparrowhawk) is now the Archmage of Earthsea. In this book he is much older, I have to say he's probably in his late 30's or 40's. Nearly have of the book takes place in the South Reach and West Reach, on the islands of Lorbanery, Roke, The Dragons' Run, Selidor, etc. Basically the world is losing it's magic. The Dragons who once spoke the Language of the Making and who were quite intelligent, are no longer capable of speaking, and indeed, all of them turn feral. Even Orm Embar and Kalessin are in danger. The people of the South Reach don't like outsiders, as Ged and Arren found out. Along their sailing in the South Reach they met The Children of the Open Sea, which are people who live on rafts that float on the ocean's waters and they are indeed nomadic. They are very nice to Arren and Ged. However, Arren and Ged were sent to seek the dark force that is endangering Earthsea. Ged and Arren make their way to the Land of the Dead on the island of Selidor, to meet this dark force known as Cob. That is all I will say, as I do not want to spoil the entire book. Unlike the last two books, the Dragons become very important to this journey, mostly Orm Embar and Kalessin.

It was NOT ancient tribal hatreds.......2004-05-18
Scott Straus is a certifiable genius when it comes to genocide. His class was the most informative and life-changing course in the history of the University of Oregon. The University of Wisconsin is extremely lucky to be gaining him as a faculty member. Everyone should buy this book and support this amazing man. Not only is Straus brilliant, but he is "much sexier in person", to quote a UN official.
Before meeting Straus, everyone should know: Rwanda was NOT ancient tribal hatreds.
Scott Straus is PHENOMENAL.......2004-02-27
Let us say one thing...Scott Straus is a brilliant man. How do we know this? Scott Straus is our Professor and although we haven't read the book we have complete faith that his brilliance radiates from the work. Once we finish the monstrous amount of reading he assigned in his class we will be sure to read this book and we have no doubt we will enjoy it...and you will too.
An Enlightening Outlook.......2003-06-10
Scott Strauss and David K. Leonard marvelously delinate the African quagmire with a sense of optomism and honesty. The book boldy breaks down a myriad of preconcieved misconceptions and offers a scholarly aproach that shows the potential for a rebirth of the African continent. Many thanks to these brilliant men.

good.......2007-09-05
It came fast, but wasn't in as good of condition as they said. But it works, and I am pleased with it!
Just be forewarned.......2007-01-31
I cannot speak for the content of the book itself but just be forewarned that this is the Study Guide (not the student package and not the book itself. I've sent amazon the corrections and they may eventually be implemented with the page numbers and I'm submitting a picture as well.
The book is full of normative statements. Too much bias. .......2006-09-08
The book is not suitable for undergraduates who have never studied economics before. There are no alternative explanations of concepts. The text is full of indoctrination. What were the authors thinking at the time of writing the book?
What's wrong about HAWALA network? They say it is an alternative way of transferring money to remote, poor areas in less developed countries, but immediately call it a financial channel for terrorists.
For instance, in Chapter 2 the authors try to explain benefits of trade in case of Haiti and Dominican Republic. The goods chosen are not related goods (from the point of view of a producer, it is hard to imagine how a country would shift resources from healthcare units (?) to food output), so I had to alter goods and numbers to make more sense of the case. I said Haiti and Dominican Republic were both producing sugar and coffee. That way it is easier for students to imagine how a country would shift people, land, and other resources away from sugar plantations to coffee plantations. In their explanation, it seemed to me that authors forgot that they were trying to explain those things to recent high school graduates. They assumed students could understand their incomplete explanations.
I do not recommend this book for introductory college economics.
sincerely

This isn't a text book, it's an indoctrination -- and full of mistakes too!.......2006-04-30
Even though I agree with many of the opinions that Boyes expresses in his book, I dare say that he does not know the difference between an opinion and a fact. Teaching this sort of thinking to our impressionable college students is dangerous at best and disastrous at worst. College is a place where kids are supposed to be taught how to think. Indoctrination of our youth is the worst kind of sin because we are condemning the next generation to a lifetime of limited thought and stagnation of progress.
There are many controversial topics in Economics. For most of them, Boyes only tells the student his own point of view. Nevermind the point of view of anyone else. This book even goes as far as including an EDITORIAL at the end of every chapter.
Also disturbing, this book is full of mistakes. Mathematical errors, incorrect data, etc. I found at least two mistakes in every chapter. Most mistakes were minor, and a few were major.

Not bad but could have been better.......2007-10-02
While this does cover a lot of bands during the punk era and bands that otherwise may not ever be know but deserve to be so (Demob, Red Alert for example) a big let down is the questions are just too how shall I say this.... fluffy.
It is not just this book but almost every book I have read of its kind (our band could be your life is an other prime example of this, I wont even bother with Blush's American Hardcore because its not worth the paper its printed on. Dance of Days being the only exception) The books are just too full of "When did you start?....what was your first gig?....How did it go?......Best/worst experience?" They just arent the kind of questions I want to hear. You have bands in here like the 4 Skins, I wanted to know more about the Southall Riots (one of the biggest inicents in modern British history) but there is almost nothing.
It is not even like its a "Looking back on old times" I remember a lot of these bands and after 20 odd years was realy expecting to read a little more detail than this. You would probably find a better interview if you dug up an old fanzine from back then off ebay or something.
Sorry there are just too many of these books going around these days and few of them have anything worth reading. If you do buy this you will probably get through it in half a day, a day at best.
One for a train ride somewhere but not much else. You want a more positive review? Try asking better questions to the bands you interview then.
The interviews are not that good.......2007-04-16
It could be Ian Glasper's fault, but I am more inclined to blame the bands interviewed. Sure, there is great stuff crammed between the covers. Demob, The Samples, Mau Maus, The Wall, The Defects and (especially) The Partisans interviews were real stand outs to me. Oh, and the Discharge feature is great. A lot of the bands though are pretty dim and dull though and all the bands that reformed in recent years will all tell you that it was for the love of punk rock and not for the money. That is just bogus.
A big let down was the Exploited article. Glasper didn't even speak to Wattie and the U.K. Subs article doesn't even feature Charlie Harper. Those are silly omissions!
I think this is the weaker of Glasper's books. I think "The Day the Country Died" seemed to go out of it's way to speak with core members of the bands featured making for a more interesting read.
Not What I Expected.......2005-08-09
The focus of the book was not what I had anticipated... had to return because the information given was irrelevant to my research.
A solid, well-researched book that's strictly for the fans........2005-03-10
Glasper's Burning Britain is a geographically organized "guide" to the British punk, organized as some 92 3-4 page biographical essays, each based on a particular band's career from formation to dissolution. Although discographies are included, along with subjectively-expressed recommendations as to which musical releases might be termed "essential" or indicative of the band's entire corpus, the primary focus is on making sense of each band's personnel changes and on providing readers with information pertaining to chart status and label affiliations.
Most chapters are written from a perspective that maintains a semblance of objectivity when discussing line-up changes, recording sessions, and concerts, but breaks down into personal observation and humorous asides when delivering information on releases and other recorded efforts themselves. Glasper is heavily reliant upon interviews for his material; indeed, each section includes numerous quotes, usually from a single individual involved with the band in question. Glasper inserts quotes from these interviews into his text in order to not only provide a band member's perspective but also to personalize what might otherwise have been a dry and distancing litany of "___ left and then ___ joined."
The work is obviously intended to provide strong chronological, geographical, and biographical data on each of the bands covered and not to generate (except indirectly) any sense of what the larger scene and subculture might've looked like. Glasper's method of concentrating each biographical band section entirely on the band itself and of mentioning concerts, labels, events, and media programmes only in direct relation to the band at hand limits a reader's ability to construct a scene image. Put shortly, there is no cohesive narrative to keep a reader moving along. Instead, one is left with a somewhat blurry idea of what events, concerts, and connections between the bands of what he calls "The Second Wave" might have looked like.
There are other books for that, some already out there and some unpublished, and Glasper's book is an interesting and erudite contribution.

Book Description
Between 1892 and 1936, Spanish society witnessed many momentous transformations, including the development of a Catalan consciousness and the emergence of Barcelona as a major industrial and cultural center. At the same time, theater in Spain underwent significant changes as teatro poético and the avant-garde challenged both the naturalistic and commercial theaters. This book examines theatrical practice in both cities and the relationship between them. Using contemporary newspaper reviews, the performance and reception of selected Spanish, Catalan, and foreign plays is analyzed against the background of sociopolitical and cultural developments in the period and the growth of a specifically Catalan national and linguistic identity.

The fact that this book exists makes me happy to be alive........2007-01-03
Perfect for any trivia fan, whether they've ever seen Mad About You or not (if they haven't, the answers are in the back, they can memorize them and then impress their friends with their staggering Mad About You knowledge). With six hundred and one questions, that gives you, at the rate of one a day, six hundred and one days worth of daily questions to quiz your friends, coworkers, children, spouse, lover, servants, or cab driver with. You'll be the talk of the town with your copy of "What's Your Mad About You IQ?"
This is a Great Book!.......2004-09-05
I loved this book! I loved how the author focused on details that the average fan might miss, like what Jamie's middle name is or what Paul yelled at Lisa. (Note - this is a question in the book and the answer is "Chicken a La King) I will warn fans that this book focuses on miniscule details instead of the main ones. You answer questions and see what your I.Q is. The awards range from the "Murray Good Boy" award to the "Jamie Buchman award"
Good luck to all who buy this book
What's Your Mad About You IQ?.......2002-04-25
Great book for any Mad About You fan.
Fun!.......2001-06-01
This book is a lot of fun. Especially if you love trivia and/or if you are MAD about Mad About You. I am a big fan of this show and I thought I knew a lot about the characters... when I read this book I found out I did not know as much as I thought. The questions in this book are very detail oriented and to get them correct you really do need to know a lot about the show! I now know a lot more than I did previously! This is surely a book for Mad About You lovers and probably would be borrowing for most anyone else. Personally, I found the book completely entertaining and a lot of fun! I am thrilled with my purchase.
Great book!!.......1999-01-27
This book is really only for people who love Mad About You. But if you do love it, then it's awesome! I also have the Jamie Buchman Award! And also, in the book summary it says their last name is "Buckman", but it's "Buchman".
Book Description
The best tools in traditional calligraphy can be expensive and even messy with tasks such as replacing ink cartridges and cleaning pen nibs. A home computer equipped with Photoshop can prove to be a more economical set of tools for calligraphers of all levels, not to mention all of the additional things users can do with digital technology. This book focuses solely on tools and techniques in Photoshop that can be used to create digital calligraphy, including varying stroke weights, flourishes, and effects that can only be created electronically, such as gradients within letters, shadow backgrounds, and so on. Readers are guided through their chosen direction, be it design, typography, fine art, or website development. Presenting an array of examples from the seemingly traditional to the outwardly digital, this book offers the necessary steps to creating and manipulating calligraphy. Readers, from novices to expert calligraphers, will find the layout and content accessible and informative.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent addition to a designer's bookshelf.......2006-07-13
This book presupposes that a) you have a good grasp of working with a computer and b) that you are comfortable with Photoshop. Also, having a graphics tablet is an absolute *must* to get the most of this book. If you fit these categories, then you can be off and running with this book. I've been working with computers for years, so much so that I'm more comfortable with a stylus, mouse and keyboard than I am with a normal pencil or pen; my "normal" handwriting is admittedly unreadable and standard calligraphy tools have always been difficult for me to master. However, this book's guide to refining one's digital brushstrokes and the inspirational ideas presented within it make calligraphy a promising venue even for me, and I've been having a grand time practicing some of the techniques set forth in its pages. For those who love typography in ALL its forms and who happen to be decent with a computer at the same time, this book is a worthwhile addition to your book collection.
Digital Calligraphy at its best.......2005-08-31
Finally, I found the key to unlocking all of the secret capabilities of Photoshop to enhance and improve my calligraphic work! This is a wonderful book! I also purchased George Thomson's other book, Digital Calligraphy/How to Create Perfect Lettering from Your Desktop. I like both books, but this one is my favorite because I have Photoshop and want to know how to use it specifically with my calligraphy. I am especially impressed with the clear directions and great examples that he gives to help one understand where to click and what to do next.
for some calligraphers.......2005-08-08
Until I read this book, I wasn't aware that you could emulate calligraphy to any worthwhile extent on a computer. But Thomson shows that indeed Photoshop's virtues extend to this sphere. It will probably surprise a few of you as well.
I should say straight off that Thomson will not convince every calligrapher. In such a traditional field, the ambience of holding a fine fountain pen, the aroma of the wet ink on the page, and the tactile feedback of writing your mark on the page will dissuade many from Photoshop's offering.
But there are others who might be interested. Calligraphy is, or it can be, a form of art. And by now, Photoshop has ensconced itself in the palettes of many artists. Likewise Thomson shows that if you focus on the pure imagery of the calligrapher, then Photoshop can take you there.
