Book Description

THE MISSING YEARS FROM THE GREATEST CRIME SAGA OF ALL TIME

Thirty-five years ago, Mario Puzo’s great American tale, The Godfather, was published, and popular culture was indelibly changed. Now, in The Godfather Returns, acclaimed novelist Mark Winegardner continues the story–the years not covered in Puzo’s bestselling book or in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic films.

It is 1955. Michael Corleone has won a bloody victory in the war among New York’s crime families. Now he wants to consolidate his power, save his marriage, and take his family into legitimate businesses. To do so, he must confront his most dangerous adversary yet, Nick Geraci, a former boxer who worked his way through law school as a Corleone street enforcer, and who is every bit as deadly and cunning as Michael. Their personal cold war will run from 1955 to 1962, exerting immense influence on the lives of America’s most powerful criminals and their loved ones, including

Tom Hagen, the Corleone Family’s lawyer and consigliere, who embarks on a political career in Nevada while trying to protect his brother;

Francesca Corleone, daughter of Michael’s late brother Sonny, who is suddenly learning her family’s true history and faces a difficult choice;

Don Louie Russo, head of the Chicago mob, who plays dumb but has wily ambitions for muscling in on the Corleones’ territory;

Peter Clemenza , the stalwart Corleone underboss, who knows more Family secrets than almost anyone;

Ambassador M. Corbett Shea, a former Prohibition-era bootlegger and business ally of the Corleones’, who wants to get his son elected to the presidency–and needs some help from his old friends;

Johnny Fontane, the world’s greatest saloon singer, who ascends to new heights as a recording artist, cozying up to Washington’s power elite and maintaining a precarious relationship with notorious underworld figures;

Kay Adams Corleone, who finally discovers the truth about her husband, Michael–and must decide what it means for their marriage and their children and

Fredo Corleone, whose death has never been fully explained until now, and whose betrayal of the Family was part of a larger and more sinister chain of events.

Sweeping from New York and Washington to Las Vegas and Cuba, The Godfather Returns is the spellbinding story of America’s criminal underworld at mid-century and its intersection with the political, legal, and entertainment empires. Mark Winegardner brings an original voice and vision to Mario Puzo’s mythic characters while creating several equally unforgettable characters of his own. The Godfather Returns stands on its own as a triumph–in a tale about what we love, yearn for, and sometimes have reason to fear . . . family.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Reading.......2007-07-24

I just finished reading this book myself and was delighted at most of how it was abridged by chapter and book form. I have also read the original Godfather book by Mario Puzo and seen all three movies. Highly recommend this.

3 out of 5 stars slow.......2007-06-28

When I think of the Godfather I think of action packed mafia style war. I remember the surprising jumps into the future where the details are explained in later chapters. I think of characters that I like or even love and the concept of respect. This book does not give me the same feeling. I understand that Winegardner is partly trying to fill in the gaps between the movies and the original. It just doesn't have the same style that made the Godfather so thrilling. I believe that the plot is solid and with some changes with the way the book was written could be the difference between what was produced and what Puzo could have produced.

2 out of 5 stars A story would help.......2007-06-05

I stuck with Godfather Returns because I love the characters but it would have been a whole lot better with a story. The icky porn scene every 20 pages or so was ineffective compensation. It ended as if the author just ran out of ink or paper. What a missed opportunity.

3 out of 5 stars A Bit Disconnected.........2007-06-03

This is probably an offer you CAN refuse. The author has undertaken an unenviable task in writing a book that is a sequel to one of the most interesting novels in the last 30 years. First the good: 1) the characters are back. However, it is just not the same without Don Vito Corleone. 2) We find out the fate of the family buffoon, Fredo 3) We get a whole section on Michael's WWII experience. Now, the bad: 1) The author lacks Puzo's ability to give us the "feel" of the Mafia experience. 2) Each chapter seems like a book of short Mafia short stories.
All-in-all, not a terrible book; it just pales in comparison to its predecessor.

3 out of 5 stars A nice pass time of a book.......2007-03-29

This is not a bad book. It is not a great book. It is a nice diverting way to spend a few hours. It suffers, however, by comparison to the original Puzo novel and to the movies (especially the first two). It gave an interesting and plausible back story to Fredo, and why he would unwillingly betray his brother and his family.

There were some aspects of the book that I found incompatible with the Godfather `canon" - most importantly the introduction of Nick Geraci as a major character and Tom Hagen's career choices. The book also spends too much time on the live of one of Sonny's daughters. In addition, some of the dates and back story did not seem to mesh with what was stated in the novel and the movies.

Read it, it is fun. But do not expect something as great as the Godfather.

                    A fun book about the measurements by which we define the world. Strauss is especially good when he tackles such issues as "What would Santa Clause have to do to deliver all his presents in one night", and in his "Measuring Macropedia" occupying the last half of the book, in which he provides nice graphical and tabular comparisons of the most frequently encountered for units of measurement. I suspect a better book could be written about the topic, but it appears to be the best such book in print at this time (early 1997). Recommended.

                    This is a fun book to read, and must have been a fun book to write. There are two parts in the book. Part I consists of 14 interesting essays, answering the questions such as: What would Santa Claus have to do to deliver all his presents in one night? Which celestial body is equal in volume to 54,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Big Macs? How loud must a noise be to have lethal effects? How hot would Hell be and how cold would Hell have to be before it froze over? What is the amount of air pressure required to burst a condom? Part II defines and explains all sorts of common and uncommon measures and scales, with lots of tables, illustrations and interesting examples.

                    My favorite essay is: How many jumping Chinese does it take to start an earthquake?

                    This book gives the readers a new understanding of all the measures and scales, in a very witty way. That's all I have to say about this book.

                    I sing opera and am often in need of a good translation. This book takes one through the common linguistic occurances that do not appear in present-day spoken Italian, as they are particular to the 18th century. At the same time, it has correct grammatic usages that are still in use today. A must for any opera singer or lover of Italian opera.

                    The liberal cause finds a backbone in Ellen Willis's supple collection of essays. Whether writing about feminism, freedom of speech, O.J. Simpson, or The Bell Curve, Willis presents arguments that are always thought-provoking, and always meant to reconnect the current political divide between the economic and cultural concerns of liberals in order to strengthen the liberal position. "The left will continue to lose ground," Willis insists, "unless it gives up the untenable distinction between economics and culture to which it is stubbornly attached." Willis inspires political liberals to stop second-guessing what mainstream America really wants, and to stand behind real concerns about the rights to freedom and pleasure. Don't Think, Smile! has plenty to spar about, but one will do so with a truly invigorating pugilist. --Maria Dolan

Most notably, Ellen Willis argues, they were a decade that saw an astounding refusal, on both the left and right, to question received wisdom or engage in substantive deliberation. Turning her acute eye on the cultural and political reaction to these imbroglios, Willis demands that we radically rethink our country and ourselves to create a society in which we can fully enjoy life.

                    "Illuminating and incisive."—udith Newman, The New York Times Book Review

                    "In a time when politics and political writing have degenerated into sound bites and sensationalism, Ellen Willis reminds us that integrity and human dignity, a quick wit and a dead-on style, offer the hope that we can make sense of-and maybe even change-the world."—*Michael Bronski, The Boston Phoenix Literary Supplement

                    "For thirty years, in a wide arc from the Village Voice and Social Text to the New Yorker and Mirabella, Ellen Willis has been the sixties' best exponent and a savvy interpreter of American politics and culture."—George Scialabba, Dissent

                    "Suffused by a romantic and intelligent magnanimity, these essays abound with nuggets of insight."—Eugene McCarraher, Commonweal

                    4 out of 5 stars Surviving Austerity.......2003-10-29

                    In "DON'T THINK, SMILE: Notes on a Decade of Denial," Ellen Willis offers penetrating insights into the "new austerity," the anti-democratic, anti-radical ethos that has come to be the prevailing and controlling ideology of American life. From her perspective as a left libertarian, she offers a compelling critique of social conservatives on both sides of the aisle: on the right the neoliberal economists and right-wing libertarians (Bennett, Boaz Murray), and on the left, those who seek to revive the mass politics of the era of the liberal consensus (Rorty, Gitlin) by stifling as politically inastute the "balkanizing" multiculturalist thrust of the post-60s cultural left.

                    Willis makes a good case for cultural politics as the more successful of the two strands leftist practice. She notes that no American has been untouched by the changes in "sexual mores, male female relations, the breakdown or taboos on public experession, the demand for a cleaner environment and a healthy diet, the new centrality of paid work to women's lives, the icreasing racial and ethnic heterogeneity of mainstream American life" ---- all of which grew out of 60s cultural radicalism -- and which has "after three decades and more of ferocious backlash, actively supported by the federal government, accomplished the social equivalent of the putting the toothpaste back in the tube."

                    She suggests that Americans lack of interest in the agenda of the traditional left may be due to the fact that it is a pale echo of the conservative social agenda of work, more work, family values and upright "Christian" living. That is certainly at least partially true, but it could also be argued that the relative popularity among the mainstream of the messages of cultural radicals can also be traced to their support by advertisers who found, starting in the 60s, that wild, sexy, carnivalesque, forever young, and alternative lifestyle advertising appeals worked, reviving a flagging economy whose plodding, adult-directed mass market 50s sales techniques no longer worked. Willis tends to discount as too neat the theory that the rise of the "consumer republic" as instituted by corporate marketers depoliticized many Americans in the deft substitution of the rights and responsibilities of consumership for those of citizenship. This argument does, however, more than hold its own in explaining the lack of engagement among many Americans with the traditional liberal goals of economic equality as a quasi-material version of this goals can be instantly achieved through the use of credit cards.

                    Willis is at her best perhaps when she personalizes her politics in stories about her own life. For instance, her reaction to no parking signs in New York which tell drivers, quote: "Don't Even Think of Parking Here" make her want to plaster a bumpersicker over them that reads: "Don't Even Think About Telling Me What to Think." She notes that such signs are emblematic of the "one-way coversations carried on by driveway guards who call themselves journalists: "Donýt even think about questioning the need to balance the federal budget. Don't even think about workers getting a fair share of the wealth they produce. Don't even think about the problems with the institution of marriage that punishing unmarried mothers won't solve."

                    As the subtitle says, Willis takes on the issues that defined the 90s: "The Majoritarian Fallacy" (traditional liberals who believe the average American will sign up for redistrubitive tax policies because it is, after all, in their own best interests -- a bloodless theory shorn of any animating cultural values), "The Decade of Denial (Don't Even Think About, etc.), "Race and Ordeal of Liberal Optimism" (the belief by even liberals that no alternative to the mystical power of capitalism can ever be imagined in the amelioration of racism), "Beyond Good and Evil (views on the runaway criminal justice state and the inculcation of fear), "Freedom, Power and Speech (the wrong-headed philosophical formulations of anti-porn feminists, and their subsequent colonization by the right wing values crowd), "Intellectual Work in the Culture of Austerity" (the imposition of the discipline of the market into every aspect of intellectuals, and everyone else's lives), and, finally, "Their Libertarianism -- and Ours" (a discussion of the bizarre justifications of reactionary social policy under the philosophical heading of libertarianism by Charles Murray and David Boaz, executive president of the Cato Institute).

                    Willis' discussion of her intellectual journey and the economic hurdles placed in her path from the 70s on by the imposition of the neo-liberal economic regime is particularly engaging. She tells of a 60s New York where jobs were easy to come by, where a person could support themselves on a small salary and had plenty of time left of social and cultural events. Then, New York, which had been the experimental site of liberal, faintly socialistic programs -- free education at City College, subsidized housing -- was told to "Drop Dead" by President Ford. The city's leaders buckled to demands for fiscal "austerity," and within ten years New York became a place where artists and writers, the city's lifeblood, could not afford to live.

                    Willis's perspective might be seen to be an artifact of that earlier period when radicalism was possible, socialism was almost acceptable, where radical left-wing intellectuals ruled the roost in New York. After all, how many liberals actually have the nerve to think, must less to say these days, that workers should get a fair share of the wealth they produce? Emerson, aphoristically observing the anti-human outcome of the early industrial revolution in America, said: "Things are in the saddle and ride mankind." Willis, in her radical left libertarianism, her refusal to accept either the halter of the "free-enterprise" system or the saddle of the liberal left's majoritarian fallacy, is indispensible in this right wing age of compassionate conservatism, and left-wing conservative compassionism.

                    5 out of 5 stars "Radical truthtelling" is like a blast to the brain........1999-10-28

                    Willis's style is challenging--she refuses to condescend to the reader--and utterly invigorating. On topics as varied as race relations, the work ethic, Monica Lewinsky, and class wars she manages to cut through the dross. What she says is both exquisitely painful in its candor, and paradoxically optimistic.

                    5 out of 5 stars Texas Roots in American Music.......2006-09-11

                    This book has great text, but is also highly pictorial history of the development of the television series that made the "Austin Sound" in music known worldwide. John Newton, the photographer for the television Austin City Limits (ACL), has documented the history of ACL and performances of some of America's best musicians in his 200 or so colour plates throughout this book.

                    Willy Nelson was a primary mover in the development of Austin, Texas, as an alternative to Nashville, Tennessee. The book includes details of that liaison, and other background personalities and relationship I had not known before. Out of Austin in the last three decades has come some of the most talented and creative music acts in almost every form of contemporary music.

                    Notable for blues, and country sounds, as well as certain modern jazz, the city of Austin has produced some creative new styles which have given outlet to some of the new ideas in music in the last quarter of the 20th century. A weekly television program named "Austin City Limits" began broadcasting in 1976.

                    This book discusses the personalities that have participated in the weekly musical presentations of the program Austin City Limits over the first 25 years of its life. I noticed that the publication date on the edition I bought gives a publication date of 2000, which would mean it would be available for the actual 25th year in 2001. Amazon.com however, reports a date of 1999.

                    The program is produced weekly in the studios of KLRU-TV, on its own sound stage, in Austin, Texas. ACL gives an amazing benefit to performers in editing the mixes of the programs of their appearances on ACL. Many have released live albums from those performances. The technical quality and love of the music as an art are unique in this approach to a television program.

                    This prestigious program is now a hallmark of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) network in the US. Those outside the US may not be aware that this network and its local stations are totally funded by private funds. Local PBS stations have annual fund-raisers and receive grants for operational and programming funds from various indivuduals, foundations and commercial companies.

                    This means that commercial considerations are not present in the focus of program production. This has enabled ACL to become an innovative and creative nationaide program of contemporary and classic American musical styles. ACL runs a full hour of nothing but music, with a mix of artists across genres that makes for a unique experience every week. This book documents the ofundaiotns and much of the character of the program as an artistic endeavour.

                    ACL is now syndicated worldwide, nurturing a worldwide fan base for the "Austin Sound" and the individuals and bands responsible for this creative world of musical expression. Includes a foreword by Lyle Lovett, an adept of almost every form of music in his versatile career, with hits and a strong following in - among other areas - Country and Western and Jazz, both big band and contemporary.

                    I learned very much about some individuals and groups. I also read about many artists and songwriters I had never heard of. ACL has been the start of national recognition for many young artists. I was especially glad to learn details about the Austin Blues community, which is more extensive and dates earlier than I had known.)

                      Sorry, but this is more an SAP advertisement for why you should consider mySAP.com, than a reference on what it is. In fairness, the various industry solutions are reasonably well explained, and so is how mySAP.com addresses those industries. But it's really about the level of depth and detail, which is not much in this case. For example, at the end of each chapter, a case study is provided. These, however, are generally a bit vague and "marketing-sounding", while the name of the company or client is often omitted, affecting credibility.

                      Granted, the whole subject is extensive, however, I was expecting more. It doesn't help that this is a translation from German, which tends to make the reading a bit "stiff" and academic compared to what we are accustomed to in North America.

                      You need not be a SAP R/3 consultant to benefit from this interesting book. In fact, I am not an R/3 expert and have little direct experience with the product. My motivation for reading this book is to better understand ERP in general as it applies to various industry segments, and SAP R/3 and PeopleSoft in particular because of a consulting assignment.

                      Before reading this book I was under the mistaken impression that SAP R/3 was inflexible and required any company implementing it to completely redesign their business processes to accommodate the software. In many respects this is true. However, SAP has a tagline that "All Industries Are Not Created Equal", which means that a generic solution enforced by an application is not a real solution at all. Using this book I discovered two things: (1) SAP R/3 is a lot more flexible than I heard and can be highly customized using industry-specific solution maps to a number of industries, and (2) the market challenges of the 20 industries covered in this book.

                      What I like is the consistent way each industry if presented, using a fixed format that discusses each industry's market trends, requirements and solution maps. As a consultant who works across a wide landscape of industries I was able to quickly absorb some of the characteristics of each industry and their key challenges, as well as see how an ERP solution fit within them. Of course, learning about how SAP as a product supports these industries is also useful, and I suspect essential to consultants and constancies focused on this particular product.

                      The book is a quick read, informative and definitely a worthwhile investment to anyone who is involved in ERP in general and SAP R/3 in particular.

                      I really liked this book. It was very informative. Although published by HP Press, the book talks extensively about other Unix platforms as well as NT. The book is probably one year old by now, but I still recommend it. The authors cover almost every hardware option you can think of. A must read for any IT person planning an SAP Implementation.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference on SAP Infrastructure.......2001-05-25

                      I highly recommend this book to companies that are going to start an SAP project. The book provides the foundation to design and build a solid technical infrastructure for SAP. Moreover, it is easy to read, covers every aspect, and is plenty of examples.

                      I am an experienced SAP technical consultant and wish this book were available some years ago. On common problem I have seen is that companies don't understand, from the infrastructure point of view, what an SAP project involves. The objective of this book is to make them aware of what they don't know (and could hurt them) at the right time, which is before the project actually starts.

                      5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for beginners or experts.......2000-12-12

                      I wish that I had this book when we started our SAP project. This book will help anyone who is thinking about installing or upgrading SAP. It helps explain how SAP software will use the hardware. And how all of the pieces fit together. Even though this book is by HP press it stays true to the theme. They do try and "sell" HP hardware or solutions every once in awhile, but for the most part this book is generic in vendor. You won't go wrong with reading this book or just having it for reference the next time you have to upgrade your hardware or if you are having response problems and need to know how to evaluate your hardware. We have been an SAP customer for six years and have grown up with SAP in the US (started at version 2.1 and have just completed our 4.6 upgrade!).
