When Gourmet magazine opened shop in 1941, it addressed a small epicurean audience. In those days, fine dining was French, seafood specialties always seemed to include cream and sherry, and game made the meal--or so the magazine preached. The bill of fare has changed since then, and fine dining now includes dishes from the world's four corners, commanded by a broad, food-aware audience. Over the years, Gourmet has chronicled all this, changing to reflect a wider, more democratized food scene that has also, paradoxically, raised the bar on what's expected of the average, too-busy cook. The Gourmet Cookbook is the most comprehensive of the magazine's recipe anthologies--a mega-tome offering more than 1,000 formulas drawn from Gourmet since its birth.
The statistics are indeed impressive: more than 100 hors d'oeuvre recipes; an equal number of vegetable dishes; 200 desserts--21 chapters in all, touching all courses and including stops at breakfast and brunch specialties; breads and crackers; plus sauces, salsas, and preserves. Included are recipes from Gourmet contributors like James Beard and Jean-Georges Vongericten, and hundreds of sidebars like "Salad Greens Primer" and "Blind Baking," all useful and informative. There are classic dishes like onion soup gratiné, gefilte fish, corn fritters, and peanut butter cookies; "new classics" such as fried calamari and spaghetti alla carbonara; and the "modern," including oatmeal brûlée with macerated berries and grilled lobster with orange chipotle vinaigrette--"every recipe you'd ever want," says the text, something of an understatement.
Cooks should know, however, that this is not a basic cookbook, despite its Noah's ark of formulas. Rather, it's a Gourmet cookbook, which means that, notwithstanding some rudimentary recipes, the focus is on the stylishly up-to-date (which is not to deny the excellence of the formulas), resulting, often, in refinements. Thus its recipe for mac and cheese calls for dijon mustard and panko; its beef stroganoff requires cremini mushrooms; its grilled chicken calls for brining; and so on. Recipes can also run to over 450 words, and require unusual ingredients. (A list of sources is provided.) Of all its chapters, those for sweets are the most immediately attractive.
For all the praise, though, there's one major goof. The recipe titles are printed in a light butter-yellow color, making them almost illegible. A lot of the reviewers complain about the yellow titles, but I didn't find them a problem at all, the yellow is dark enough to make them readable for me.

An Excellent Choice for Entertaining.......2007-08-24
When I first flipped through this cookbook, it seemed like it would be the perfect 'special occasion' cookbook. I cook almost every day, and I would not call myself boring or traditional either. I wouldn't even consider myself someone who is 'short on time' and in need of some kind of 'quickie' recipe. However, I will never come home on a Wednesday night and whip up a nice Pistachio-Crusted Arctic Char. This book is great--for special occasion cooking. I recently cooked a French dinner for my mother's husband. I followed the three recipies I chose word for word, and the meal was perfect--despite the fact that I had never made or even tasted the dishes before. It took me seven hours to make--but if you are going to spend hours slaving away at the stove to make a wonderful holiday meal for you family, you might as well make sure the result is worth the effort. This book ensures that all of your hard work will not go unappreciated. In addition, while some reviews seem to be negative about the layout of the book, if you simply use the index in the back instead of the rather general table of contents, you will find it more than user friendly.

The book offers a good variety of options and is well organized for easy access to specific foods. I like the chef's comments attached to many of the recipes. I would love to compare to the other three books we ordered over a month ago from Amazon, but they still have not shipped. Book is very good, Amazon delivery performance is very bad on this order.

Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 4,300 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of itÂ’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for artificial teeth not customized for individual application excluding dentures. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This paper presents a quarterly estimated structural macroeconomic model for the euro area, the AWM, which is a medium-sized model that treats the euro area as a single economy. The model is designed to have a long-run equilibrium consistent with neo-classical economic theory while the short-run dynamics are largely demand-driven. The current version of the AWM is mostly backward-looking and is largely estimated rather than calibrated. A general overview of the structure of the model and of its long-run and short-run properties is given, with particular emphasis on the steady state properties, and a review of key equations. Results from two illustrative simulations are provided: a fiscal expenditure shock and a change in interest rates, with and without policy responses, respectively.

One model, the Area-Wide Model recently developed at the European Central Bank, treats the whole area as a single economy. The euro area is a new economic entity, the properties of which are less well known than those of individual countries. Using a recently developed macroeconometric model (AWM), which treats the euro area as a single economy, we document its response to monetary, fiscal, productivity and long-run unemployment shocks. The properties of the estimated model are thereby summarised in terms of these responses. The simulation results and the resulting multipliers appear to be relatively insensitive to the specification of the postulated interest rate setting equation-within the class of functions considered, namely variations around a standard Taylor rule.

The huge demand shock caused by German unification in 1990 resulted in a remarkable increase of imports from the main trading partners of West Germany. For the purpose of modeling such effects on international trade and the feedback on the domestic economy, a macroeconometric disequilibrium model for the German economy is extended by submodels for bilateral trade flows vis-a-vis the major trading partners of Germany. These submodels treat the trade flows as well as foreign and domestic production and capacity utilization as endogenous in a vector error correction framework. Consequently, the model allows for explicit modeling of spillovers, like those resulting from the demand shock of German unification. In the model, these spillovers do not only affect German trade flows, but also real variables in other countries leading to a feedback on Germany. The paper presents econometric estimates of these effects.

In the paper a small scale macroeconometric model for the Euro area is built, relying on cobreaking and fractional cointegration theory. Several linkages relating key macroeconomic variables are found. Firstly, evidence of a common nonlinear deterministic trend driving the long-run evolution of inflation, nominal interest rates and money growth, determined by medium to long term monetary policy management, is found. Both the quantity theory of money and Fisher's theory of nominal interest rate determination are the economic mechanisms explaining how inflation and nominal interest rates are attracted towards their equilibrium values in the long term. Secondly, evidence of two common long memory factors driving the medium-run evolution of the nominal and real variables, related to output and nominal money growth shocks and short term monetary policy management, is also found. The quantity theory of money, the management of the short term rate by the central bank (Taylor rule), term structure linkages and a present value relationship relating output and real stock market prices growth, are the economic mechanisms explaining the evolution of the macroeconomy in the short to medium term. The macroeconometric model has then been employed to assess the monetary policy strategy of the ECB with respect to the achievement of the price stability objective in the medium term, finding full support for its formulation involving two dimensions, i.e. the monetary pillar and economic pillar.

I've read several romantic ideas books and this small book has better ideas than those that have thousands of ideas. The only better book on this subsject that I have found is The Romantic's Guide: Hundreds of Creative Tips for a Lifetime of Love.

I've read a lot of books on this subject and this is certainly one of the best. The ideas are more practical and useful than 1001 Ways to Be Romantic and quite a bit better than the 2002 Ways series (which are pretty lame). The only better book I can think of is The Romantic's Guide.

Impressive, but not quite my cup of tea.......2000-11-02
Brit Cult was impressive, but not quite my cup of tea. I had hoped it would be an all-around Anglophile guide covering the past 30 years of British culture and society. What it does do (and does so very well) is talk about musical and artistic trends in the U.K. during that periods. Thus we hear about all the many breakout trends in music that followed punk, and even the drug scene that accompanied it (3 pages on Ecstasy alone). There are, however, no entries for "Falklands," "Margaret Thatcher," or "Poll Tax."
If you already have a pretty good idea of what recent British pop music, art and literature is like, this book is a good investment. If not, it may be of limited usefulness.

A QM PRODUCTION! -As good as it's ever going to get... .......2006-12-25
With someone like TV's iconic producer Quinn Martin, you'd think there would be plenty written on him and his numerous classic TV productions. But none of these shows such as "The Fugitive", "The FBI", "The Streets Of San Francisco" and alike, are not to my knowledge even available on dvd to view. Whoever now owns the rights, is just sitting on a "goldmine" inventory that the public would surely want to see again. They're certainly not going to buy this book in droves, even though it is well researched and detailed. Although like previous reviewer Mr. Lee Goldberg, I too work in the business and can agree that author Jonathan Etter, did lack asking some more probing questions from those that knew and worked for Quinn. But let's face it as times moves on, there's fewer people to ask.
A QM Production, was always something special and well produced. Filmed in an era of the 1960's and 70's, when an independent producer could operate the way he did. And with such a track record for hits, could enjoy a mutally personal and profitable relationship with the networks. Today, it's all in the packaging of shows by the same super-agents that represent the network executives themselves. It's all about "the deal" and ratings demographics. But Etter's book, does give us a fair insight into how these shows came about and were produced. Before there was the "X-Files", QM had blazed the way with "The Invaders". "Caribe" pre-dated "Miami Vice" -well you can read more on all that.
Until someone, someday writes a really definitive study of American TV production, one that includes the likes of Desilu, Four-Star, MCA-Revue and Ziv, this study will have to do for now.
Behind a Television Legend.......2003-09-06
I've been waiting for a book about Quinn Martin... one of televisions most prolific and successful producers... and finally Jonathan Etters have given us one. The book is a comprehensive look at ALL of QM's productions, from THE UNTOUCHABLES through CARIBE and even their unsold pilots. There are plenty of interesting details and lots of back-stabbing trivia about troublesome actors. As much fun as this book is, it doesn't quit hit the mark. The author, an admitted TV outsider, doesn't know enough about production, or the television business, to ask the really interesting questions about the development, production, and ultimate success or failure of the various TV series. He concentrates far too much on the observations of occasional guest-stars rather than indepth interviews with the showrunners (Philip Saltzman, John Wilder,Bill Yates, etc.). While he did talk to those people, he just didn't know the right questions to ask. You don't get any real insight into the creative process behind the shows or the business behind QM Productions. That said, this book is still a great fun and long overdue...!

Easy to Understand and Very Good.......2004-01-15
It's not very often that I find myself reading a cookbook from beginning to end, but I did on this one. Despite having three authors, it's very well organized and easy to read, with a simple and consistent presentation for each of the recipes or topics. It makes a good reference companion book for ColdFusion developers, whether mere beginners or more experienced experts. Only some 300 pages long, it is definitely concise but thorough, in contrast to some other weightier, but not necessarily better, books on ColdFusion. I wish it had appeared years ago for previous versions of ColdFusion.
Great techniques you can use today!.......2003-10-29
Are you tired of all the Flash talk and ready to dive into improving your ColdFusion skills? This is the book for you then!
The authors waste no time diving into techniques for improving you skills. In the first couple of pages on string manipulation, I learned tips I could use today. They move quickly into arrays and structures (a challenge for most beginners!) If you're building an application for the first time, the techniques and advice offered throughout will give you working code to build and expand upon.
One section is devoted to database interaction including a simple SQL database you can build to run examples and separate coverage of stored procedures in both MS SQL Server and Oracle. Each recipe is described in a short sentence, making it easy to determine whether it's the one you're looking for, followed by the technique with one or more examples and further comments. There's no wasted text.
Especially interesting to me are the chapters detailing use of the new XML tags and functions and interoperability with JSPs and Servelets. An excellent list of resource websites is included as an appendix. This book is a great companion to your CFML Reference guide. The only improvement would be to make it a fatter, more detailed book!
The cookbook is one of Sams Developer's Library editions, specializing in providing practicing programmers with a core reference to assist them in common day-to-day programming tasks. Highly recommended for intermediate developers wanting to improve their skills quickly.

Easy to understand.......2003-07-10
As a person with English as a second language, some content in the users guides that comes with the software can be tricky to understand. This book saves my hair! Even though the content is easy to understand, I was hoping to cover the more CFMX specific new features, especially Flash Remoting. There was no mention of that feature in the book.
Overall, advanced developer probably won't get much new out of this book, but beginner and intermediate programmer will have this as a great and easy to understand resource.
Concise and task-oriented.......2003-06-30
This book's strength is that it is extremely task-oriented. Readers will find clear information about how to do a variety of specific tasks in Cold Fusion, such as searching a verity collection or creating a java CFX tag.
Readers looking for information about how to build full-fledged applications may not be entirely satisfied with this book, as it isn't set up as a tutorial. The book would be a perfect companion to a more exhaustive tome -- it's a nice "quick reference" guide when you need a refresher on how to do a discrete task.
Excellent Resource.......2003-06-24
I find this book to be a very useful resource -- it has an extensive index and table of contents that are helpful when I'm looking for a specific topic. While the book is not organized in a sequential, "learn from the start" order, I find that its recipe format, with descriptive section headers, often prompts me to explore new topics and learn more about aspects of the technology that I haven't used in the past. Each recipe includes a Technique section with code examples, and then a Comments section that discusses the code in easy-to-understand English. I would recommend this book to anyone doing anything that involves ColdFusion.
