Book Description
The first work of fiction by a President of the United States -- a sweeping novel of the American South and the War of Independence
In his ambitious and deeply rewarding novel, Jimmy Carter brings to life the Revolutionary War as it was fought in the Deep South; it is a saga that will change the way we think about the conflict. He reminds us that much of the fight for independence took place in that region and that it was a struggle of both great and small battles and of terrible brutality, with neighbor turned against neighbor, the Indians' support sought by both sides, and no quarter asked or given. The Hornet's Nest follows a cast of characters and their loved ones on both sides of this violent conflict -- including some who are based on the author's ancestors.
At the heart of the story is Ethan Pratt, who in 1766 moves with his wife, Epsey, from Philadelphia to North Carolina and then to Georgia in 1771, in the company of Quakers. On their homesteads in Georgia, Ethan and his wife form a friendship with neighbors Kindred Morris and his wife, Mavis. Through Kindred and his young Indian friend Newota, Ethan learns about the frontier and the Native American tribes who are being continually pressed farther inland by settlers. As the eight-year war develops, Ethan and Kindred find themselves in life-and-death combat with oppos- ing forces.
With its moving love story, vivid action, and the suspense of a war fought with increasing ferocity and stealth, The Hornet's Nest is historical fiction at its best, in the tradition of such major classics as The Last of the Mohicans.

Customer Reviews:
A great novel by a former U.S. president.......2007-08-04
Obviously the result of years of research, The Hornet's Nest provides a much-needed narrative on the unsung heroes of the revolutionary war--those men living south of the Mason-Dixon line who sacrificed their lives for the revolutionary cause. Based on the experience of former President Jimmy Carter's grandmother, this novel focuses on the war effort in North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida from 1773 to 1781. "The hornet's nest" was an area of Georgia around Augusta that was held tenaciously by the rebel forces, even though the rest of Georgia and all of North Carolina and Florida had fallen to the British. I decided to read this book because I've become a fan of Mr. Carter's during his postpresidential career, but I continued to read it because it is compelling and informative. Mr. Carter does an excellent job of portraying just how grim the revolutionary cause was for most of the war, and it was refreshing to read something on the Revolutionary War in a setting other than Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Virginia
Stately, panoramic view of the American Revolution in Georgia.......2007-07-03
I bought this book mostly out of curiosity. As a British subject, I wondered what an ex-President of the USA would have to say about the Revolutionary War nearly 250 years later. In this, I was very pleasantly surprised. Mr Carter combines solid story-telling and characterisation with an utterly reliable neutrality as to the rights and wrongs of the conflict. We are invited into the lives of townspeople, craftsmen, settlers, and soldiers on both sides - "Whigs" and "Tories" as they came to be known - and each person springs to life, complete with utterly convincing beliefs, hopes, desires, and ambitions. What's more, the Native Americans come to life too: revealed not as naked, painted, warlike savages, but human beings just like ourselves, wishing only to continue with their chosen way of life. Certainly, the pace is slow - but that is inevitable if the tale is to be true to life. Whirlwind, slapdash treatments like the movie "The Patriot" are bound to give one-sided, one-dimensional accounts of what was really a classic human tragedy played out over a quarter of a century. Even the most violent of wars is intermittent - a fact that we too easily forget when we read about it later, and at a distance. Mr Carter's profound understanding of politics and military matters helps him to show, rather than tell, the complex interplay of individual motives that lead, first to discontent and repression, then to simmering violence, and finally to open war. Frankly, not everyone has the temperament or the education to read this book with enjoyment; but the more people who do so, the better. Reading "The Hornet's Nest" is like visiting a foreign country that you have read about in guidebooks, but never seen before. It fills in all the little details that the history books leave out, and as a result explains why events took place as they did. It is a substantial literary and civic contribution, and one that few Presidents - or senior politicians of any nation - could hope to rival.
Enjoyable learning.......2007-06-28
I have always proclaimed the Revolutionary War as my favorite war. Probably because it is the easiest war for me to grasp both the concepts behind it and the strategies of combat. I spent a long period of my childhood on World War II because of the dominance of aircraft, but the concepts and strategies were so much more complex that it is hard to get a big picture on the war. Carter's book about the Revolutionary War does a good job of giving the big picture to the war. I have a better understanding about what life was like during that time of war where families were always on the lookout for danger. What I found inappropriate was the passages of textbook-like descriptions meant to span periods of time. I understand the need for them but it seemed like they just popped up in the middle of a chapter or times when I didn't expect them. They may have worked better as lead ins to new chapters or books.
Flat.......2007-01-19
A very dry flat uninspiring read. When the book (infrequently) takes on a tinge of excitement, the mood is quashed by a lapse into tedious detail. Real science and history texts have held my interest better.
Hornets Nest is a Good Read.......2006-11-04
Jimmy Carter has done a great work in bringing a greater depth of understanding to a little understood time in our nation's history. I had lived and traveled in the states of Georgia, North and south Carolina during the early '80s. Carter's book brought much greater insight to what I observed during while I was in those states as well as greater insight to the events leading up to and during the revolutionary war. The beauty, brutality, and perseverance exhibited by union patriots and citizens loyal to the crown was laid out in stark detail. Well written and a good read.

Book Description
Trade within the EU has been freed, but European and foreign barriers still restrict trade with the rest of the world. Rapid growth in East Asia, and liberalization in Eastern Europe, pose facinating and urgent questions for West European policy, such as why do countries trade? Who gains? Who could lose? Why are some goods exported, others imported, and yet others both exported and imported? How does imperfect competition modify trade? What impact do regional trade barriers have? Why do they exist? What effects do regional trade blocs have, and is their enlargement a cause for worry? What is the significance of increasing capital mobility across frontiers? What are the links between trade and growth, and trade and employment? How do environmental considerations affect trade and trade policy? These are some of the questions this book sets out to answer.

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable

Book Description
This macroeconomics textbook is the first to be written from a European perspective. No previous knowledge is assumed and nearly all topics in macroeconomics are covered, including advanced concepts such as endogenous growth or time inconsistency. It presents the "new" macroeconomics--a
synthesis of the older fixed price approach and of the newer microeconomic foundations and intertemporal aspects. The work looks at the open economy and the effect of openness as a source of disturbance, emphasizing the exchange rate and the importance of capital movements and other international
linkages. Each chapter includes an overview, summary section, list of key concepts, and many exercises.
Customer Reviews:
A basic, but untidy, textbook.......2007-02-06
First of all, the book does cover basic Macroeconomics. Not in a great way though, you could easily read through this book without really grasping what the IS-LM curves actually do for example, but if you realize when they are doing a poor job of explaining, just read again or read up elsewhere.
Also, if you have done Microeconomics, too much of this book is pure repetition. Too much of this book pretends a large part of the overlap between macro- and microeconomics is purely macroeconomics, so it explains it all. I guess that is a symptom of a sketchy subjectarea, Microeconomics is a far better defined area of study, Macro seems to be Micro, Finance and a lot of guesswork in the middle. An exaggeration for sure, and it COULD be through errors of this book that I got this impression, but I don't think so.
Maybe the worst thing though, is that they have done a spectacular job of managing to get just about every box (Sort of minicases the embellishes the text) and figures/tables on a different page than where it is referenced. This means you constantly have to flip the page as you read through the reasoning and at the same time try to follow it in the figures. It may sound trivial, but after a while I can assure you it is not. Mabe they should have printed this book in a larger format, getting some ideas from american textbooks where they usually allow for a little more space in order to match figures and text, instead of trying to save on papercost.
Not good for selfstudy.......2005-05-11
This book is hard to understand and not good for self study. On the back side of the book it is written that
"...companian web site provides the following resources for both lecturer and student:
* Lecture Plans
* PowerPoint slide shows
* Solutions to end of chapter exercises
* Revision Questions
* Weblinks
* Case studies."
I tried to access the website but i noticed that those resources are not for students although they mentioned so.
I donot recommend that book instead buy one of N. Gregory Mankiw's economics book.
Regards,
great macroeconomic textbook.......2001-04-04
This book, intermediate in level, is a great textbook for european students or students interested in European economics. It's nice to read a european oriented book every now and then when most economics books are American. The book deals the with modern approach to macro economicsa and uses micro-economic foundations. It gives timely examples and lively case studies taken from the European and global economic scene. Even for business school students this book will be very usefull in understanding the european ecnomic envoronment. Moreover it's well written, easy to read style.

Book Description
This stimulating Very Short Introduction to music invites us to really think about music and the values and qualities we ascribe to it. The world teems with different kinds of music-traditional, folk, classical, jazz, rock, pop-and each type of music tends to come with its own way of thinking. Drawing on a wealth of accessible examples ranging from Beethoven to the Spice Girls to Chinese zither music, Nicholas Cook attempts to provide a framework for thinking about all music. By examining the personal, social, and cultural values that music embodies, the book reveals the shortcomings of traditional conceptions of music, and sketches a more inclusive approach emphasizing the role of performers and listeners.
Customer Reviews:
misleading title made me angry.......2007-08-29
Whatever the merits of the book itself, it is certainly not an introduction to music. It is an introduction to musicology. To be more precise, it's an introduction to how musicologists now question a lot of what musicologists used to take for granted. So it is not even a book about music. It is a book about competing models for understanding music.
Once I actually understood what the book was about, I found that it was a very smart introduction to seven topics. Through most of it, Cook is a neutral narrator. In the last paragraph, he lets us have his controlling thesis: "Music has unique powers as an agent of ideology." Or should that be "Music professors have unique powers as agents of ideology."
Mistitled but interesting.......2006-09-10
This book is not what you think it is. It does not cover the rudiments of music or the history of Western music (or any other music). It is not about composers or any specific musical works. It is, instead, a look at the concept of music in Western society. It attempts to show that the standard idea of "serious" Western music is based on "ideology" and a certain amount of mythology. Cook argues against the general notion that composers (as typified by Beethoven) represent the height of musical expression and that performers are the next level down with listeners at the bottom of the artistic pecking order. There is a certain amount of fashionable academic blather and deconstructionism present here, but, overall, the book is thought provoking and worth reading.
If you want to know about music, don't buy this book.......2004-10-28
Nicholas Cook's book is mistitled. If you want to understand music, it would be better to buy either The Classical Style by Charles Rosen or Aaron Copland's book, What to Listen for in Music, or some other books that would teach you music and not some messed up philosophy of man's making.
The things he said in chapter seven were absurd and disgusting. These things have nothing to do with understanding or appreciating music.
This book is not worth reading. The things in this book are not worth thinking about. Your time would be better spent on other things.
I'm sorry that my professor even had this book on the booklist to read. Thirty years ago this book would have never been allowed to be printed, let alone allowed in a classroom.
This book isn't worth the one star I gave it.
Thought-provoking.......2001-09-14
As a musician (and the book may cause you to rethink what that word actually means), this book revealed many ideas which had been festering in my subconscious without my ever really taking the time to think them through fully. This is not so much a history or introduction to music as it is a presentation of both recent thought in musicology and a framework in which to conceive and comprehend music as a human process in general and its relation to all of culture. Naturally the last several pages focus on particular "gender-related" issues because that is the recent thought in musicology, but the book does a good job of not presenting this recent view as definitive and of placing this view within a large historical context of thinking about music. The entire book is sharp, well-written, and articulate. It touches on the must fundamental questions of musical meaning in all its forms, yet it requires virtually no formal knowledge of music or an acquaintance with any particular body of music, classic, popular, or otherwise. Of course, the author assumes a general knowledge (you have heard of Beethoven, the Beatles, and so on...) and of course the more you know of music, the more you will take away from the book, but nothing in particular is assumed. The author does a good job of explaining the working myths most people have about music, without technical jargon. For instance, what does it really mean to say, "I just heard 'Beethoven's 9th?'"? Is Beethoven's 9th the sound waves I heard, (whether live or recorded), or is it the body of all past performances of the symphony, or is it the jumble of symbols and notation which Beethoven wrote down 200 years ago? Why does popular music often lack such a specific reference to "musical works" such as "Beethoven's 9th"? Why is popular music freer to deviate from notation, as opposed to classical music, which always insists on "adherence to the composer's original score"? Why is "authorship" and "authenticity" valued in both classical and popular music, although in different ways? Does music exist independently of humans and express eternal truths and beauties, or is music inextricably bound up with culture, commerce, society, and the world? How are the three commonly used categories of "composition, performance, and criticism" related, and are the boundaries between them really so clear? How do notation and symbolism affect the way music is constructed and experienced? How do we give meaning to music? Why is it that the "purest" of "pure music", is often surrounded by the most commentary, criticism, and words, those things whose very absense are said to give it its very "purity"? Why does music matter to us? Why do we care? If these questions sound interesting to you, you will like this book.
A very short review.......2001-05-11
This book is a little gem. All music students should read it.

Book Description
'World music' emerged as an invention of the West from encounters with other cultures. This book draws readers into a remarkable range of these historical encounters, in which music had the power to evoke the exotic and to give voice to the voiceless. In the course of the volume's eight chapters the reader witnesses music's involvement in the modern world, but also the individual moments and particular histories that are crucial to an understanding of music's diversity. World Music is wide-ranging in its geographical scope, yet individual chapters provide in-depth treatments of selected music cultures and regional music histories. The book frequently zooms in on repertoires and musicians - such as Bob Marley, Bartok, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan - and attempts to account for world music's growing presence and popularity at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Musical Globalism or Globalization?.......2007-05-22
Philip V. Bohlman is a professor of musicology and ethnomusicology at the University of Chicago, an institution reknowned for its foundational works in Anthropology and Ethnomusicology. Being the nature of interdisciplinary ethnomusicologgical research, the book covers areas of study including Musicology, Anthropology, Sociology, History, Political Science, Economics and Philosophy.
He begins by expressing the limitations inherant in approaching a global phenomenon with only 150, 4"x7" pages. The reader is consistently reminded of the authors initial disclaimer when reading two paragraphs into an intriguing topic, and finding that it ends there.
Nevertheless, Bohlman presents a myriad of ways of approaching and interpretating the global phenonemon known as "world" music. He focuses on topics including: the history of western musicology and ethnomusicology, music in tradition, music in nationalism, music in diaspora, music in mediation, and music in the era of globalization. He also provides the reader with a nice collection of further readings, references and listening suggestions in the bibliography, organized by chapter.
A constant theme for Bohlman is the notion of "encounter". He attributes that it is within the experience of the encounter that we attribute meaning to the music itself, and to the context in which it is experienced.
He also postulates that there is a concurrent tension in so far as the way we "encounter" world musics, being mediated by global capitalism and market forces. This can potentialy take a traditional music out of context, resulting in an extention of post-colonial cultural hegemony or "cultural imperialism made sonorous" (147). Conversly, it can provide a medium for identity formation, revival, and representation, while potentially bringing people together, fostering empathy and harmony. You make the choice!
Is it musical globalism?
-Is the current manifestation of world music a reflection of a global world, where cultural bridges are being reconciled?
or
Is it musical globalization?
-Is world music a reflection of an economically globalized world, mediated by market forces and economic manipulation?
This is a complex question that Bohlman poses, ever so succinctly, yet all too briefly.
Great introduction for the student, active musician or passive listener.
Anthropological/ Sociological view on World Music.......2004-11-06
The author examines the anthropological, sociological and ethnomusicological aspects of World Music. This is an essential text to the introduction of world music.
VERY ACADEMIC PERSPECTIVES.......2003-03-03
This is a very academic study of the phenomenon of world music. As such it provides interesting theories and also some important facts, but I doubt whether the average world music fan would derive much enjoyment from it. The author includes worldwide music from the folk, art and popular traditions and mentions that it can be sacred, secular or commercial. So far, so good, but with sentences like: "As we encounter world music, therefore, it is important to recognize the need to reckon with different epistemologies and ontologies if we are to understand what world music can mean in its virtually infinite varieties," I nearly fell of my chair laughing. In its defence, the book does include informative albeit short pieces on the 1932 Cairo Congress of Arab Music, the great Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, Rai music, Leadbelly, Celtic music, the Eurovision Song Contest, Bob Marley, Manu Dibango from Cameroon and the musics of the various diasporas. Two maps are included: The Celtic Fringe in Europe and the Polka Belt in the USA plus there are illustrations, a bibliography, discography and an index. I picked up the book without properly checking the contents - it's great source material if you want to write a dissertation on music from different traditions, but not a text that reflects the rhythms of the rich variety of world music that is becoming more and more available to everybody in our current era of globalisation.

Book Description
The quirky British television series Doctor Who is a classic both of science fiction and television drama. First broadcast in 1963, it has remained an influential TV presence ever since, with a hugely successful new series airing in 2005 - and on the Sci-Fi Channel in the US in 2006. As a vehicle for satire, social commentary, or sheer fantasy adventure, Doctor Who is unparalleled. It was a show created for children, but it was immediately usurped by adults. Arriving at a time of upheaval in the popular arts in Britain, Doctor Who was born into a television tradition influenced by the TV plays of Dennis Potter, the cult television drama The Prisoner, the James Bond films and Stanley Kubrick's science fiction triptych Dr Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey and A Clockwork Orange. A British fantasy adventure that has unfolded across television screens over decades in the tradition of Lewis Carroll, Conan Doyle and HG Wells, the strength of Doctor Who has always been its writers and the ideas they nurtured.
In this new history of the show, Andrew Cartmel (who was the script editor on Doctor Who from 1987 to 1990) looks into its social and cultural impact - providing a fascinating read for committed and casual fans alike. And the book is up-to-date, including a final chapter on the most recent series, starring Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper.
