Daniel Yergin's first prize-winning book, Shattered Peace, was a history of the Cold War. Afterwards the young academic star joined the energy project of the Harvard Business School and wrote the best-seller Energy Future. Following on from there, The Prize, winner of the 1992 Pulitzer Prize for nonfiction, is a comprehensive history of one of the commodities that powers the world--oil. Founded in the 19th century, the oil industry began producing kerosene for lamps and progressed to gasoline. Huge personal fortunes arose from it, and whole nations sprung out of the power politics of the oil wells. Yergin's fascinating account sweeps from early robber barons like John D. Rockefeller, to the oil crisis of the 1970s, through to the Gulf War.

Book Description

Pulitzer Prize Winner -- and Now an Epic PBS Series

The Prize recounts the panoramic history of oil -- and the struggle for wealth power that has always surrounded oil. This struggle has shaken the world economy, dictated the outcome of wars, and transformed the destiny of men and nations. The Prize is as much a history of the twentieth century as of the oil industry itself. The canvas of this history is enormous -- from the drilling of the first well in Pennsylvania through two great world wars to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and Operation Desert Storm.

The cast extends from wildcatters and rogues to oil tycoons, and from Winston Churchill and Ibn Saud to George Bush and Saddam Hussein. The definitive work on the subject of oil and a major contribution to understanding our century, The Prize is a book of extraordinary breadth, riveting excitement -- and great importance.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, important, well-written, well-researched history.......2007-10-20

Fascinating account of the history of the oil industry. I would say that just the four chapters on World War II--and the oil role in it--are worth the book. Reads like a novel, where Yergin jumps back and forth between history and details about the industry main players. And the amount of details that enrich the historic account is just perfect. The research done to put this work together must have been mind boggling.

2 out of 5 stars First to cover the topic, but still a facile book.......2007-09-17

Yergen gets kudos for being the first to cover this topic, but his account (perhaps because it's now outdated) is facile and pro-oil company. Every time the oil companies are thwarted he seems to blame straw men for it: tree huggers, the people that hounded poor misunderstood Tricky Dick Nixon, the Saudi sheiks (best friends of Bush, Cheney, et al). He never turns his gaze on the corruption of the oil companies themselves. We hit peak oil in the U.S. in the 1960s. The oil companies suppressed any attempts since then to find alternative fuels. Now we are up the creek, so to speak, with the Oil Men running the Show. Some "Prize". I'd say it's the booby prize. The best overview of our current fix is Lawrence Wright's The Looming Tower.

5 out of 5 stars The Age of Oil.......2007-07-04

We are living in the Age of oil.

World and human civilization have experienced different "ages" such as the Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Gilded Age, and so on. The 20th and 21st Centuries are indeed, the "Oil Age." We are living in it. This book is one of the most informative and relevant books published in recent years, In my opinion. This work by Daniel Yergin was and still is prescient today, in 2007. "The Prize" tells the story of where we are today, and how we got here. It also latently foresees where we're going in the future. The book doesn't tell us - we just know. We're human. This book is so comprehensive and has so much information only a small portion of it can be noted. Below relates to WWII, and former Iranian leader Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh.

"The Prize" proceeds chronologically. And within the chapters there are numerous mini-subtitles for sub-chapters that connect the big picture. The bibliography and index are excellent and can be used to tie in different figures and historical occurrences. The 'history of oil' is actually the history of the world: humankind, business, innovations, globalization, war, and geo-political power-plays. The very survival of a nation-state is based upon oil.

"The Prize" begins with tiny puddles of black, sticky, goo, in Pennsylvania in the mid 1800s. Locals collected this goo and realized its many uses. In 1859 oil was struck. Almost immediately, the wealth and power amassed from possession and control of oil was realized. The initial trust acts in the U.S. are related to the oil industry, in which Barons quickly gained gargantuan amounts of wealth and political power.

Enter WWII:

The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor because of oil. Japanese conquests throughout South-East Asia and the Pacific were motivated not only by the quest for dominance but for securing oil and keeping their oil (fuel) supply lines open. Without supply lines of oil, the war machine would completely break down, as it later did (Chapter 8).

The Americans sacrificed a lot, but Japan in large part lost WWII because of its lack of fuel for planes, ships, and ground forces. Domestically, the Japanese economy collapsed because of its inability to import oil. The Kamikazes were brought into existence after the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Philippines, in 1944. Lack of oil meant lack of fighter plane fuel. Fuel supplies became so low they actually stopped training Japanese pilots at all. Pilots were ordered to "follow the leader" to the attack site because they didn't even have navigation training.

There was even an "Oil Czar" In the U.S. during World War II in PAW, the Petroleum Administration for War. The Oil Czar was Harold Ickes.

In the European Theater's Eastern Front Germany invaded Russia with Operation Barbarossa mostly to get the oil in the Caucuses (In addition to "lebensraum" and "untermensch" beliefs). In addition, a needed land-route to Iron Ore in Scandinavia via the Baltic SSR Republics was a factor. Hitler also began making synthetic oil because without enough of it Germany's war machine, domestic economy, and arms production were doomed. These synthetic oil factories were top targets in Allied bombing missions.

Oil and the Cold War World:

The Soviets dominated Eastern Europe and exerted its influence after WWII for 45 years because the Allies ran out of gasoline. When the British 3rd Army and U.S. 1st Army were advancing eastward toward Berlin chasing demoralized, retreating, and broken German troops in disarray. But because of the lack of gasoline for the Allied Armies, a million people ended up losing their lives and war was prolonged because the Germans were able to retreat and re-organize (page 388).

If someone says "it's not about the oil" today in 2007, tell them to read this book. Oil encompasses almost all things in our daily lives, whether we are are conscious of it, or not.

Oil, Military, and Economic Interests:

Democratically elected governments are overthrown by foreign governments because of oil. In 1953 Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh was democratically elected in Iran. He was an anti-communist. He didn't like the 93% to 7% profit sharing split with a British Oil company operating inside Iran. He changed it to 50-50. The CIA sponsored a coup to overthrow him. Americans were repeatedly told by the U.S. media that Mossadegh was a communist and communist sympathizer, although factually untrue. The American public believed this propaganda, according to poll results. Gullible? Mossadegh was ousted and the Shah was placed in power. Democracy has never been supported in the Middle East and it isn't now by the U.S. government. Also see the Carter Doctrine of 1980.

Most of us as individual consumers literally need oil to function. Dependence upon oil is for the continuation of the nation-state, its military machines, and domestic economy. More critical today, is that nation-states need a *sufficient* supply of it.

This is a positive book. It's a history book.

We're in the heart of the "Oil Age."

This book is the better form to say what means the oil in the world. The history is well clear end real. There are many important information and who is curious or needs to know the subject this is a perfect one.

5 out of 5 stars It's interesting to know the past to forecast the future..........2007-06-14

I really appreciated Daniel YERGIN's book.
The history of oil is crucial to try to solve the huge demand for future oil. History tells us that oil is limitless in virgin deserts...

This book is one of the best for enlightening those of the the 1970's forwrd of the preferred interests of their mothers and fathers. Ex- President Bush is heavily documented in his actions with those of the Middle Est in his attempts at acquiring a chunk of the oil industry. It highlights South America's Venezuela and its failing oil fields. It shows the world's efforts at unity for one major purpose. It defines OPEC and ARAMCO as they need to be understood. For anyone not current on world issue, this is the book to read.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent primer on petroleum.......1997-08-14

This book explains how oil affects our lives, our nation, the world's economy and political situations. Yergin's writing style is superb, and although the material is somewhat dry, he really brings events to life. This work is rare for non-fiction - it is easy reading and informative. I have just finished the book a few minutes ago, and I really feel that I have learned a great deal. My favorite section was on World War II. I have read hundreds of books on the subject, but the section in "The Prize" dedicated to the War from a petroleum standpoint is superb

5 out of 5 stars Truly a classic text. Fascinating and enlightening........1996-11-27

Yergin's grasp of the broad view of the history of oil and its context in world history is amazing. Scholarly and yet as compelling as the best fiction, this book is a masterful work

            5 out of 5 stars Truly enlightening!.......1996-10-10

This book is a delight! Familiar old hymn tunes were taken and cat-appropriate words were written. Then they are beautifully performed. And they are a HOOT! If you have ever loved a kitty, you will love this book. But DON'T BUY IT WITHOUT THE CD!! The whole effect is lost without the CD. Put it in your car and I guarantee traffic won't bother you quite as much as usual.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyment and good cause in one package.......2000-08-30

A full range of hymn performance styles - Gospel quartets, bluesgrass, blues, country ... is here performed by cats of distinction (actually it sounds as if the cats ordered their human musically inclined servants to sing as proxies).

A short list of a few of the delights:

I Will Sing of My Purina which sounds suspiciously like I Will Sing the Wondrous Story

Oh, They Tell Me of a Home which sounds suspiciously like Oh They Tell Me of a Home

Lord, I'm Coming Home the lyrics of which are only slightly odd

Tussle and Play which sounds suspiciously like Trust and Obey.

You also get the complete lyrics to sing along. An even the end pages are useful, introducing you to the cream of religious cats such as Reverend A. Jax: "To poor little kitties / Who've gone astray / He preaches salvation ... / He shows the way."

                                1 out of 5 stars Just Pathetic.......2006-05-02

"Better Dead Than Red" tells us that the Cold War "Red Scare" was hysteria, an obsession, paranoia, xenophobic red baiting, and anti-communist madness. "For 20 years or so. America lost its collective mind."

The author habitually used bloated language. If you're patriotic, then he would write that you're RABIDLY patriotic. If you're anti-communist, then in this book you'd be VIRULENTLY anti-communist. An expose of communism would be an OVERHEATED expose.

The author submitted facts that completely demolished his own thesis.

We find quotes from Marx and Engels advocating forcible overthrow of governments. Also, there's a quote from Lenin advocating violent revolution, and a quote from Stalin advocating the seizure of power. The Communist Party USA's Manual's claimed to be leading the fight for revolutionary overthrow of our government. The pledge of the Communist Party USA was "to defend the Soviet Union" to insure "the triumph of Soviet Power in the US."

A Justice Department employee passed classified documents to a Russian member of the UN. A Canadian spy ring stole nuclear secrets and delivered them to Russia. The Rosenbergs were convicted of espionage. Kirn II Sung attacked South Korea with Stalin's blessing.

The author's excerpts from comic books, not disproved, also cast doubt on his allegation that the communist threat was imaginary.

"Modern communism got its first toehold in Russia through violence and bloodshed. A revolution was directed by a small group of men who urged the people to attack."

"In its wake communism had left a trail of murders, lies, and misery of a kind never before seen in the history of the world."

Senator Joseph McCarthy embarked on an anti-communist crusade to remove communists from the U.S. government. Should we have employees of our own government laying the groundwork for its overthrow? According to the author, it's no biggie. McCarthy was smeared as a nasty bully, a lout, and a whiskey-soaked demagogue-as if that proved that communist infiltration was imaginary.

The author's only halfway legitimate point was that liberals, progressives, dupes, and fellow travelers were sometimes called Communists when they technically may not have been card-carrying members of the Party. However, there is such a wide overlap on basic principles that it is sometimes hard to tell the difference. Party membership was not a matter of public record.

It was hilarious when the author Red-baited himself! First, he quoted the Russian-born wife of an American newspaperman. "In... Moscow, a good-looking, well-dressed girl wearing make-up is one of three things: a foreigner, an actress, or a prostitute... Needless to say, there is no Miss USSR."

Then, taking his own Red-bait, the author's anguished reply was to quote several commie statistics about the number of women commissars and women awarded he title of Mother Heroine for their excellence in family raising. "No Miss USSR, indeed!" he wrote. "Every single one of Russia's women qualifies for that distinction..."

If not for the humor of the author's pathetic attempt to spin the facts to disprove themselves, this would be the worst book I have ever read.

[The Venona transcripts, intercepted communications to the USSR not published in the McCarty era, verify that our government was infested with agents serving Moscow.]

                                4 out of 5 stars Anti-Commie Movie Poster Book.......2004-02-04

As the other reviews have noted: this short paperback is certainly no serious study of the causes-and-effects of the Cold War. Its value lies with its reprinting numerous examples of long-forgotten anti-Red movie-posters and weird Red-baiting "pulp" magazines and articles. Conservatives will be initially disappointed in that it "puts down" the sillier anti-commie publications, and it doesn't lambast the Red Menace; but, hey, it's a fun pub that conservatives should have a copy for research. (The author did such of a fine job in locating such seemingly foolish anti-commie madness stuff that a conservative would think that the author was even one of those "fellow traveller" pinkos; he probably would have been investigated by HUAC and good, old "Fighting Joe" McCarthy.) Young conservatives should get it to learn the titles of anti-Red movies and buy the movie posters for souvenirs; especially the "We'll Bury You" poster -- undoubtedly the best broadsheet! An all-too-short work; wish it had more anti-Chicom references though. I once knew a guy who had his entire basement filled up with thousands of anti-commie books on dozens of shelves -- a true, great right-wing library; this irreverant paperback would have been banned from his collection -- unfortunately; its a hoot!

3 out of 5 stars ah, the good old days ..........2003-11-14

Better Dead Than Red is a semi-sarcastic look at the anti-communist hysteria that swept America following WWII. While the information it provides on the time is accurate, many of America's fears (and precautions) seem now incredibly ridiculous and naiive - as in the directions on "how to build a backyard nuclear shelter" for example. Barson makes no judgements on the attitudes and behaviours of the time, which is a strength of the book, and serves to underline the silliness that possessed many Americans. An interesting examiniation of a (thankfully) by-gone era.

With this book you can find domestic Cold War history as it really happened--from movie posters, comic books, magazine headlines, and so on. Was it paranoia or just normal precautions? See it and judge it for yourself. The author generally allows people to draw their own conclusions.

One of the most interesting things displayed in the book is a 1947 flier called "How to Identify an American Communist."
Some of the warning signs to watch out for:
-"The practice of criticizing only American, British and Chinese policies, and never criticizing Soviet policies."
-"Continually charging critics with being "Fascists," no matter whether the criticism comes from liberals, conservatives, reactionaries or those who are really Fascists."

This book features examples of both pro and anti-Soviet propaganda. It's interesting to see how the line shifted after the end of WWII.

5 out of 5 stars Insider's Look at How TV Shows Get Made.......2003-12-08

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning about what goes into television production. Stevens and Stevens (who are screenwriters themselves, having written for the "Batman" animated TV series, among other things) go into detail about how "Deep Space Nine" got made. From the show's initial story concept to the inevitable pre-production meetings that followed, story development, and casting: it's all here.

This book also provides some brief but useful information on art design, make-up, directing, editing, how scripts are written (and re-written), and so on. There's even a helpful section at the end of the book which explains who all these people are whose names whiz by in the closing credits of a TV show. (Ever want to know what a property master is or what a scenic artist or grip does? Now you will.)

In short, even if you have no interest in the Star Trek universe whatsoever but you are interested in television production, this book should give you an excellent introduction to the art form.

And, oh, yeah... if you are a Star Trek fan, you'll love this book even more for all the inside trivia it provides on one of the finest (and most underrated) sci-fi shows ever to grace the airwaves.

All the behind the scenes technical information in this book. Viewers get to see the original production sketches of the DS9 station in development. Many of the designs were far better than what was eventually used. Overall, it is an entertaining book to read. This show more than the others depicted life on other worlds. They gave Trek fans what they always wanted to see...more alien species and action. Something the Next Generation and Voyager lacked. I have had this book now, for about 5 years. I must have read it dozens of times (yup i'm a geek). Its got all the technical stuff on filming the pilot (and beyond) from script development, model making and special effects, to acting and characters (even the story of how Morn came to be!). This book is well written, interesting, and above all a heap of fun. Go ahead and enjoy.

A monster of a book, like a phone book and worth it. It illustrates and comments extensively on the progressive designs of the station, the evolution of the crew, the preparation of the story and the SFX. Every little detail, enhanced with B&W and colour photos, excerpts from draft and final scripts -- this is more than piddly interviews with the cast and a few exposê arguments. This covers DS9 from start to..well, not finish, but it's one heck of a start, and well worth it to pick it up if you're a DS9 fan. It's extremely fun.
