Part 4 to 6 of A series of unfortunate events.......2007-08-31
I read part 1 to 3 of a series of unfortunate events a couple of years ago and thought all the books were about the same. I didn't expect the story to be developing. From part 4 to 6 new personalities arive and the story develops further making you aware of and curious about the overall plot.
Better than Potter.......2007-07-18
I bought the first set of books for my 8-year-old niece. She read all three in two months (it's the only books she has read without being prompted). Now I get hints to buy more so be prepared to buy then all. What more can I say. These book are well written, explain new words without talking down, so increasing vocabulary. Dark and funny.
I only wish J.K.Rowling could write as good as this. Though that hasn't effected her book sales.
The fun is just getting started.......2007-05-31
The family loves these books from Lemony Snicket. We can't wait for the next ones.
4th Grade Reader Strikes Gold in Lemony Snicket.......2007-04-29
These books are exceptionally great. My son has struggled to find books that are the right speed for him and the right tone, genre, etc. He doesn't like overly scary books, sports books, fantasy, and a bunch of other common genres with anything reasonable at his reading level.
Lemony Snicket has great story lines, great use of humor, and vocabulary that's a little stretch (but always explained, with humor, as part of the narrative). He has plowed through the first 6 books, even reading 3 of them last week alone. I enjoy reading them, too, which is always a good sign for me.
thank you.......2007-01-23
we are enjoying the stories and the quality of the books is more than excellent
thank you it will last a long time

Why East beat West in the post WWII economic war.......2000-01-14
This book is in three parts - firstly a history of Ford as number 2 in American automotive manufacturing, secondly a history of Nissan as number 2 in Japan and thirdly the clash between American and Japan after 1975. The author does an excellent job using anecdotes and world events to describe what happened and why. This book explains why I bought a japanese car and over seven years later I am extremely happy with it. It also explains why I am a keen supporter of TQM! Perhaps someone could write a similar book on the colour television industry. Highly recommended for anybody with an interest in cars, modern history, economics and/or TQM.

Book Description
This intermediate level textbook concentrates on macroeconomic analysis and is one of the first to focus on imperfectly competitive labour and product markets. The authors present a `new Keynesian' treatment of macroeconomics. Its key characteristic is the use of wage bargaining and price-setting under imperfect competition, making product and labour market assumptions closer to the real world. These features are fully integrated in both closed and open economy analysis. The book provides access both to the important applied work on unemployment, inflation, and external balances, and to the journal literature on major questions of economic policy and performance, especially in Western Europe, available to undergraduates and non-specialists for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
the best book on (macro)economics I've ever read !.......2002-07-26
Ten years ago, by coincidence, I saw this book. I bought it, and since then I have recommended it to all my colleagues.
At that time, the book was new and contained all the most recent developments in the journals (it ends with hysteresis - well explained and at that moment a brand new topic in the journals).
But what I find more important is that this is the only book I read where all those journal-stuff was fitted into a coherent frame-work; for the first time I really understood what macro-economics (and their micro foundations) was all about.
Up till then, I had seen only fragmented pieces of macro theory and here these authors came with a coherent view, which would have taken myself years to fit together, and I was sorry that this was not the handbook I had at university.
I don't follow-up this field anymore, and the book has not been updated anymore since then (a pity I think) but I write this review out of gratitute for the insights the authors gave me: I finally realized that in this book all the pieces were fitted together and allowed me to really understand macro-economics.
Personally, I can only recommend it.
The best macroeconomics book for open economies........2001-09-20
Most of the textbooks in macroeconomics (Blanchard, Mankiew and Gordon) focus on basic IS-LM and AS-AD models which are useless in open economies. This book is perfect upgrade for everybody who has read basic macroeconomics textbooks and wants to go further. There is economic history review, everithing is based on imperfect labour markets and salter-swan diagram is perfectly implemented in standard macroeconomics tools together with IS-LM model.
A book on relevant economic theory.......2000-03-18
One of the best macroeconomics textbooks in the market.First of all it contains an excellent chronological survey of models. But above all, its approach based on wage bargain and mark-up pricing has great relevance in terms of real world phenomena, in contrast to most mecroeconomic textbooks based in the unrealistic competitive model. The main contribution is to set an scenario for a feasible and intelligent social negotiation and for economic policy, instead of definitive "natural" outcomes of economic performance. I hope the authors keep on updating this book

TeacherLaughs: A Jollytologist Book: Quips, Quotes, and Anecdotes about the Classroom (Jollytologist)
ASIN: 0517228173
Release Date: 2006-10-03 |
Book Description
Parenting is one of the hardest but most rewarding jobs there is. It requires patience, kindness, and, most of all, a sense of humor. This hilarious and touching collection of hundreds of quips, quotes, and anecdotes highlights the funny side of being a parent.
ParentLaughs covers all stages of raising kids, from preparation and pregnancy through raising toddlers, school-aged children, and teenagers. Witty views on parenting come from parents who are famous for their sense of humor, including Ray Romano, Erma Bombeck, Dave Barry, Joan Rivers, and other well-known and less well-known moms and dads.
Award-winning professional speaker and therapeutic humor expert “Mr. Jollytologist” Allen Klein has carefully selected these lighthearted quips, quotes, and anecdotes to keep parents laughing even when the baby is crying.

Great Gift Book.......2007-01-03
It takes a sense of humor to be a parent these days and this wonderful collection of quips and quotes pokes fun at the whole experience while still telling the truth. A great gift for parents with kids of ALL ages! Be sure to check out the other books in the series, they are gems, too!
Provides a Much-needed Dose of Humor .......2006-12-22
ParentLaughs is a little book that warms your heart in a big way.
These pages contain an amazing range of quotes - Parents-to-Be to Young Adulthood.
Jolllyologist Allen Klein has assembled a delightful array of wisdom, as only the kids can tell it. The humor in ParentLaughs is just the ticket for re-gaining perspective when things get out of whack and off track.
There is so much to learn from these pages - and what amazing teachers these young people are!
Parenting Jokes, Laughs, & Quotes, Fused with Witty Humor.......2006-11-23
Parent Laugs is a hilarious book all about the joys, and challenges of being a parent. If you are a new parent, or an experienced one, I'm sure you'll relate to this wonderful little book all about parental expeience you receive once you have your first child. The author has truly picked the best of quotes, jokes and wit to leave you laughing on every page!
A good laugh.......2006-11-11
One of my favorite anecdotes from this book, "How to know whether or not you are ready to have kids," starts off with the Grocery Store Test which advises you to take two small animals (they recommend goats) with you as you shop and to "Always keep them in sight and pay for anything they eat or damage."
This is a really enjoyable read for parents. It was especially enjoyable for me because my kids are all in college or otherwise grown and out of the house so I read this, laughed, and pictured my oldest son, recently married, perhaps going through this himself in a couple of years.
If your kids are still young and you read this book, remember that poetic justice will prevail and their kids will be at least as picky about their food as yours are.
Book Description
This text is a practical guide to the compositional techniques, resources, and technologies available to composers today. Each chapter traces the development of traditional and modern elements that form the foundation of music in the late twentieth century. Among the subjects discussed are interval exploration, serialism, pitch-class sets, twelve-tone music, electronic music, algorithmic composition, and indeterminacy.
Customer Reviews:
Good resource.......2005-08-15
A good book that contains general information about composition techniques. I wish it was slightly more detailed. Nonetheless, it is a great book to have if your are a composer. I often find myself looking through this book when I get a case of writer's block.
Excellent as an Overview.......2002-10-22
This book attempts to introduce most of the important techniques of modern music since 1945. This is a tall order. The years from 1945 to about 1975 were years of explosive development of new musical languages, perhaps more explosive and diverse than at any other time in musical history. What impresses most about this book is how well Cope outlines most of these techniques and how non-dogmatic and practical his approach really is.
I have to strongly disagree with one of the reviewers below. This book is certainly not in depth...and Cope's fund of techniques tend to favor the modernist and stop about 1975 or so,,,but honestly, most innovation in compositional technique did stop about 1975. Music written since that time has tended to develop one or more of these techniques, but not really break new ground. (Even in electronic music, the new ground broken has been primarily technical, innovative in instruments and computer usage, but not really innovative in basic langauge.
None of the sections in this book gets an exhaustive cover. If you find yourself interested in twleve-tone or serial composition, you may need to aquire other books...if your interest is peaked by aleatoric procedures, other books will be needed. The purpose of this book is not to be exhaustive, but to whet the appetite of the younger composer. I am no longer a young composer, and yet I found some techniques that, while not new to me, I had never previously considered in any serious way. (The chapter on Pitch Class Sets was excellent. I had never thought seriously about these as compositional techniques, more as methods of analysis. I found the chapter to be rich and to spur many ideas for both my compositions and my improvisational group work.)
There are some problems with the book. The section on Algorythmic Composition and Computer music is highly outdated. This is arguably the one area of music where significant innovation has taken place in the past 25 years. To leave out any mention of MIDI and digital synthesis...as well as serious discussion on fractals and interactive music, is not good. Perhaps a further revision of the book will try to keep up with this fast growing area of music.
Also, the final chapter on integration and eclecticism left me disappointed. As the academic stnagle-hold of high modernism fades, styles continue to diversify, and the old debates about tonal or pan-tonal music fade into a murmur, it is becoming obvious that the techniques described in the book are just that, techniques. They are probably not the basis for a complete personal style. Style develops when composers artfully combine many of these techniques, used imaginatively. As such, the integration chapter should be the most relevant. Instead, it feels perfunctory...each level of integration is described in a paragraph or two, and these levels aren't sufficiently differentiated to really mean anything.
Still, on the whole, the book is a useful overview and would make a good text for an introductory composition course. Any composer, regardless of his or her final vision, should have a working knowledge of all of these techniques. You may not use them ultimately, but without a practical understanding of them, your craft will only remain half formed.
This book is worthwhile.......2000-03-30
This book is geared for a younger composer who hasn't had experience in writing in a contemporary style, or is unfamiliar with some techniques such as pitch-sets. It is practical, and it gives some exercises at the end of each chapter to give some hands-on experience with these techniques. Sure, there may not be anything groundbreaking here, but if you're unfamiliar with contemporary techniques, take a good look at this book.
Rather basic and not a practical guide.......1999-12-23
I didn't like it. This book takes a rather 'coffee table' approach to the topic, and is very basic. I found nothing I had not seen before, and nothing to inspire new composition. Basicly, it takes each simple compositional idea, breifly explains it, and moves on. Since the ideas are rather straighforward to begin with, this isn't much use.
Any musician in contact with the latest music styles and even relatively old electronic toys (such as the sequencer), will find this book rather useless - especially the chapters on algorithmic and electronic music. The stuff here is really old hat!
I was looking for inspirational new composition techniques. Didn't find it here. Still, if you won't listen to any music that wasn't written for full orchestra, beleive that all real music has to be written out with pen and paper and are looking for a simple overveiw of some 'new fangled tricks' that people have tried in the last hundred years to kick start their writing process, you may find something here of use.

Great, in-depth review of the first 4 X-Files seasons!.......1998-09-12
This book is a great guide for both new X-philes as well as seasoned vets. Great background on all X-Files characters/actors. Excellent episode synopses, which always include comments that help fill in the gaps. This is one of the only books I've seen with a comprehensive review of all 4 previous seasons in one place. I was a new fan to the X-files this season (5th) and this book helped me locate and understand key episodes that I needed to see to understand the "conspiracy" storyline. I can't wait for the book for the 5th season!!
Book Description
An internationally acclaimed broadcast voice specialist and top rated speaker, Dr. Ann S. Utterback teaches broadcasting students and professionals how to find their best voice and how to care for it so that it lasts a lifetime.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent resource.......2007-03-10
This book is the assigned text for a course I'm taking in broadcast performance. While some of the chapter material is a little dry, it's still pretty useful and the exercises are excellent for warm-up and practice. It's very good advice and help for the price.
Improved speaking skills - not just for broadcasters.......2003-06-23
This book came highly recommended over the Voice & Speech Trainers Association list, Vastavox, so it seemed like a pretty good bet.
It has turned out to be an extremely useful and practical guide for me not just in improving how I sound over the radio, but also in teaching oral presentation skills and phonetics to university-level EFL learners.
Utterback starts with the basics, namely, how to breathe correctly, i.e. with the diaphragm. From there she proceeds to health, diet and lifestyle issues, e.g. stay away from caffeine and cigarettes; don't strain your vocal cords by coughing, clearing your throat, or yelling at sports events; and don't ruin your voice by trying to artificially lower your pitch.
Next is resonance, how to improve it, and how to correct problems like nasality (a sticky issue for many of us Mid-Westerners). The chapter on articulation includes an introduction to basic articulatory phonetics, and word lists to identify problem areas, with suggestions on what to watch out for and how to fix it.
I especially appreciated the chapter on stress and intonation, since I feel this is at the heart of good speaking, whether in ordinary conversation, as an EFL learner, or when broadcasting over radio or TV. I am adopting the idea of script marking, which I had been doing to some extent anyway, in my teaching of EFL learners, who really need to pre-read a text before reading it aloud, or they will make all their same old habitual mistakes again and again.
The chapter on 'Sounding conversational' also provided an important direction to work on. I hear lots of broadcasters getting it right, i.e. reading prepared copy as though they were just ad libbing it to a friend, something much harder to do than one might think. This chapter gives many practical suggestions on how to sound warmer and more natural when reading.
The chapters on going live and dealing with stress were useful, especially the part on how to deal with stalkers. You become a relatively public kind of person once you're on radio or TV, and this sometimes brings unwelcome attention. I now feel a bit better prepared to deal with it.
Most chapters have practical exercises at the end, like warm-ups to get you going before speaking or going on the air, which I will be coming back to frequently.
Two appendices containing survey data and advice from news directors for prospective broadcasters were informative, though repetitive - I guess this serves to emphasize that there is considerable consensus on what is really important. Finally, the last two appendices contain word lists for identifying problem phonemes and difficult-to-pronounce words. (For the latter, an online or CD-ROM dictionary with sound files is a real convenience, and much more explicit than the ad hoc pronunciation symbols used in US dictionaries.)
This book contains no frills or fluff, just lots of what you really need to know to learn to speak and read better and more engagingly. It's an incredible bargain compared to hiring a voice coach, who would certainly spend most of his or her paid time telling you what can be found in this book, and you have it as a permanent reference besides.
Tape/Recording Quality Horrible!!.......2003-04-13
The quality of the audio cassette I received was so bad I couldn't concentrate on the actual content. Ann moved back and forth from the microphone which, of course, increased and decreased the microphone's "pick up." In addition, it contained a countless number of popping "P"s. However, most annoying of all, the tape sounded as if it was recorded at the bottom of a large tin can -- the tape was very flat (mono). When paying forty dollars for a single cassette tape, I expect more than merely an amateur production; I expect and am entitled to a professional production. Very dissappointed.
A Book that is Needed.......2000-11-06
Finally, a book that focuses on broadacst voice! Many reporters and prospective anchors have finished school with good writing skills, but they are not polished in vocal production or delivery. Utterback's book is a "must have" for journalism schools and news rooms throughout the country. If people are serious about getting into this profession, this book will be a resource for a lifetime. Whether it's proper breathing, script marking or delivery styles, Utterback's book enables journalists to master the skills of the craft.

has written a book for news directors, producers, GM's, on-air talent,
and all news professionals. Even though stress can be an ally when
you need that extra surge of adrenaline, the chronic stress of the
news business can also erode your health and your job performance.
BROADCASTER'S SURVIVAL GUIDE describes techniques to help everyone in
broadcasting recognize stresses and deal with them in healthy ways.
You'll also find a list of resources for additional help from
professionals. A book like this is long overdue for broadcasters.
Jeff Alan, News Director at WPTY in Memphis, sums it up: "Ann
Utterback knows broadcasters and the stresses we work under. She has
managed to package everything that broadcasters need to improve their
lives and performances in this one book. No one could ask for a
better tool."

Customer Reviews:
I'm not sorry I bought it, but..........2006-02-17
What's missing is basics for those new to racing games, like even fundamental driving techniques, let alone advanced techniques. The writers assumed that the reader had already had experience with PGR2.
It is also limited to providing advice for the "career" mode of play, and not to Playtime, nor the setting up of private Xbox Live sessions with friends. As is usual with such books, the promotional words overhype their own achievements. "Unbeatable online tips" - really?? I think not.
But the car list is helpful as a checklist of what is missing in your garages when you are going for the "own all cars" medal.
And the list of tracks is again helpful as a reminder of key features. The maps of the tracks are fuzzy and very little help in planning the drive.
As I said above, I'm not sorry I bought it, but the cover led me to expect better.
Augment this book with searches in online forums, where PGR3 players post useful stuff that is outside the scope of this book, like "How to earn the Style Racer achievement" (Google this!)
