Lia Lee was born in 1981 to a family of recent Hmong immigrants, and soon developed symptoms of epilepsy. By 1988 she was living at home but was brain dead after a tragic cycle of misunderstanding, overmedication, and culture clash: "What the doctors viewed as clinical efficiency the Hmong viewed as frosty arrogance." The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down is a tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, written with the deepest of human feeling. Sherwin Nuland said of the account, "There are no villains in Fadiman's tale, just as there are no heroes. People are presented as she saw them, in their humility and their frailty--and their nobility."
Book Description
Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction
When three-month-old Lia Lee Arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos. The Hmong, traditionally a close-knit and fiercely people, have been less amenable to assimilation than most immigrants, adhering steadfastly to the rituals and beliefs of their ancestors. Lia's pediatricians, Neil Ernst and his wife, Peggy Philip, cleaved just as strongly to another tradition: that of Western medicine. When Lia Lee Entered the American medical system, diagnosed as an epileptic, her story became a tragic case history of cultural miscommunication.
Parents and doctors both wanted the best for Lia, but their ideas about the causes of her illness and its treatment could hardly have been more different. The Hmong see illness aand healing as spiritual matters linked to virtually everything in the universe, while medical community marks a division between body and soul, and concerns itself almost exclusively with the former. Lia's doctors ascribed her seizures to the misfiring of her cerebral neurons; her parents called her illness, qaug dab peg--the spirit catches you and you fall down--and ascribed it to the wandering of her soul. The doctors prescribed anticonvulsants; her parents preferred animal sacrifices.

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down moves from hospital corridors to healing ceremonies, and from the hill country of Laos to the living rooms of Merced, uncovering in its path the complex sources and implications of two dramatically clashing worldviews.

A Paradigm of the Complexities of Modern Medicine in Relation to Cuture and Ethnicity.......2007-09-30
I read "The Spirit Catches You, and You Fall Down" as a required reading for a Sociology course on Health and Ilnness in Society. This is simply put, an amazing piece of work, that not only is thorough, but has a great deal of emotion and you really are able to sense the pain, frustration, and joy, of both the Lee family and the medical community that cared for her. This work is also a testiment to the Hmong people and culture, who are often grealty overlooked in US Asian American culture. Anne Fadiman goes into great detail describing their culture, from it's language, history, and religion both here and in Loas, and to their unfortunate and tragic involvement in the US war in Vietnam which landed them in refugee camps in Thailand. My opinions vacillated at times from anger to empathy for her parents and their inability and refusal to follow the doctors advise, that could've saved their daughters life. I encourage this book to be read by anyone going into the medical field where you will encounter a myriad of ethnicities, that often fly in the face of conventional US medicine. This is nonfiction that reads with the excitement and personality of a well crafted novel.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down .......2007-09-26
exceptional book for those involved in anything dealing with human relationships. gives unbiased information from all sides of the issue (language & cultural barriers resulting in medical "errors")
this book smacks you in the face with your own preconceptions about what families know about their child, and what professionals know about their field, and how sometimes those two don't mesh, resulting in the child being put in the middle.
oh yeah, and every once in a while you will want to yell out about "the guy hiding behind the rock." because hindsight is so clear!
Great introduction to cross cultural communication.......2007-09-04
I was assigned this book as a supplement to a Cross Cultural Communication class. It's a very interesting read about a young girl who gets caught between Eastern and Western medicine. It makes a good read to see how CCC can be so important in our daily lives. It has a good lot of medical jargon and even more characters. There are a lot of doctors that are important for various reasons. It is certainly not a light beach read. Once you read it though you'll want someone else to read it to have someone to talk about. You can get in long discussions over who is "right" and if there is a right.
Oh so predictable..........2007-08-07
Detailed, researched look at the Hmong people of Vietnam in America through the experiences of one family in the medical/hospital system as they try to help their epileptic child. Although the action takes place in California, the story would probably have been similar no matter where the family lived. Non judgemental author keeps reader engaged. Structure of the book with alternating chapters detailing the history of the Hmong and then the specific family works well. Cross cultural misunderstandings seem inevitable given language and cultural differences. Sad without being depressing.
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.......2007-08-01
An excellent book. A powerful and moving true story of a cultural east/west clash, especially concerning medical care. I couldn't put the book down. Enlightening also when it comes to the drugs used in treating status epilecticus, specifically in children under three. I also appreciated learning about some of the political history regarding the beautiful people of Laos. My heart goes out to the Hmong people.

From the supplier: The chairperson in the nursing department, California State University, Stanislaus, teaches near the Merced County area described in a book by Anne Fadiman, 'The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down.' She has also worked at Merced Community Medical Center obstetric unit during the time discussed in the book, did research among the Hmong, met many families like the family in the book, and knew most of the professionals who served them and she updates the story. She feels sorry that Fadiman did not interview more nurses to better understand how they dealt with challenges related to Hmong culture. They had no plan to combine traditional obstetrical care with Western care. Leininger's theory on cultural care can be of help to nurses.

Book Description
* Herman Scheer was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize in 1999
The global economy and our way of life are based on the exploitation of fossil fuels, which not only threaten massive environmental and social disruption through global warming but, at present rates of consumption, will run out within decades, causing huge industrial dislocation and economic collapse. Even before then, the conflicts it causes in the Middle East and elsewhere will be frighteningly exacerbated.
The alternate exists: renewable energy from renewable sources – above all, solar. Substituting renewable for fossil resources will take a new industrial revolution to avert the worst of the damage and establish a new international order.
It can be done, and it can be done in time. “The Solar Economy,” by one of the world’s most effective analysts and advocates, lays out the blueprints, showing how the political, economic, and technological challenges can be met using indigenous, renewable, and universally available resources, and the enormous opportunities and benefits that will flow from doing so.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent look at the energy industry as a WHOLE........2007-09-05
As another reviewer has pointed out this book will not be easy going for everyone. A lot of it written in rather a dry style and is dense with good points. i.e. it is not written in the style of a popular science book. On the other hand this is what makes it so interesting and convincing in its arguments.
The other thing I liked about it was that it takes a very broad view of different energy sources and considers their implications at every level. One of the main points is that when considering the efficiency of an energy source one should account for the energy wasted at every stage of the supply chain rather than the amount of energy going into and coming out of the generation plant. For example the supply chain for coal is Mining - Refining - Shipping - Coal-fired power station - National grid (high voltage) - NG (medium voltage) - Distribution (low voltage). Many of these are energy intensive processes. The supply chain for nuclear is even worse. Compare that to the on-site generation solar supply chain: PV installation - Distribution (indefinitely at no further cost). Many of the true costs of the fossil fuel supply chain is not paid by the consumer or even by the companies involved in supply. The author also considers the social costs involved, which many people seem to be willing to ignore.
There are also some good insights into the oil industry. The most interesting one that comes to mind is how the oil using industries are dependent on each other for the cheap prices of oil. When crude oil is refined the proportions of different products cannot be varied to a great degree. A certain proportion will be kerosene for plane fuel, a certain proportion will be for automobile fuel, a certain proportion usable by the chemicals industry and so on. If the demand for automobile fuel decreases due to efficient engines and the demand from other industries stays the same then the other industries oil prices will go up to cover the cost. This gives the reason for the chemicals industry's opposal to fuel duty. This gives all oil using industries an incentive to keep their demand in line with everybody else's i.e. steadily increasing.
An inspiring book that doesn't rely on its writing style. It gets by purely on its ideas.
Throw away society is flushing our planet down the pan.......2007-08-07
I liked this book, it gets a bit heavey and technical at times and I indeed had to have a breather once or twice, but it is one of the few books I wanted to read again and had too. I was already a convert to living off grid in Spain with solar and wind energy and this book a surprise Xmas gift from my son only strenghed my renewable off grid living decision. Im no eco warrior or green fanatic Im just ahead of the game, this book lets you know how little of everything we have left not just oil and coal and gas but every metal and mineral we take for granted. Our throw away society is flushing this planet down the pan. Our response till its too late is like the drunk i the pub, mines a pint please, goodbye leave the light on it will turn its self off !
Current trends indicate the world wide burning of fossil fuels is likely to flare by 50 percent between 1990 and 2010.......2006-11-23
All economic activity relies on the physical and chemical conversion of materials from one form into another, and the conversion of fuels into the energy need to distribute and consume the resultant products.
Energy and raw materials are the fundament of our economies.
World energy consumption show that 32 per cent is generated by burning crude oil, 25 per cent by burning coal, and 17 per cent by burning natural gas. Five per cent comes from nuclear fuels, and another 14 per cent from combustion of biomass, and hydroelectricity accounts for 6 per cent of all energy consumption.
Current trends indicate the world wide burning of fossil fuels is likely to flare by 50 percent between 1990 and 2010.
Is Nuclear energy life threatening? No. New pebble reactors will provide safe energy and safeguard against the possibility a critical chain reaction. France is building a new experimental fusion reactor and if successful could move the world into a hydrogen society. Long-term the world has infinite energy.
Scheer wants an immediate shift away from "life threatening fossil fuel resource trap" Solar=Hydrogen=electrical, "Only with the transition to renewable resources, and thus to a solar global economy can economic logic and with it the future path of economic development be radically altered."
Fallacy #1: Sheer says, increases in productivity and efficiency must stabilize resource consumption at its current level. Energy stabilize needs to be replaced with energy expansion. Life gets better as more energy becomes available. Energy consumption will only increase, increasing many fold over the next decade. Allocative efficiency favors big business and restricts competition.
Fallacy #2: Sheer says, "as reserves of crude oil, natural gas and certain strategically important minerals approach exhaustion, resource crisis are becoming more intense." Who has economic control? Who sets the prices for crude? And in the end Who will pay for them? It takes time to migrate from one energy source to another. Large capital investment is required to build infrastructure. The point of no return begins as banks and corporations begin building the new energy future. Energy shortages are short term crisis that push innovation and adoption of newer and cheaper fuels. Capitalist use their profits from a crisis to build the new infrastructure and world keeps on running.
Fallacy #3. Sheer says, "Energy and mineral resources are found in relatively few locations around the globe". Wow, amazing fear factor. In the 70s and 80s the US reduced dependancy on foreign oil by 50% before oil became cheap again. Today, the US and Canada represent a vast empty quarter of oil in the form of shale and tar. Canada is becoming an important source of oil. Wyoming will be developed as a new Texas oil source. Cheaper oil extraction system will become popular and make accessible oil in the western hemisphere.
Sheer is the realist. Sheer responses "but which the modern techno-pundits now imbue with bright promise) has been dazzled by partial, faddishly exaggerated and overgeneralized reports of the actual developments". Change requires risk. Innovation surges and falls before maturing.
Tough read, but interesting.......2005-06-28
The first time I tried to read this book, it confused me so much I had to put it down for a year. The author mixes a paragraph or two of insight and vision within pages of example and data. On, this my second, read I am doing better by skimming past the long lists of examples.
I would love to see this book boiled down to about 20 pages, with another 20 of optional documentation.
What the author does for the reader is lay out the foundation of the modern energy system, and its hidden costs. In great detail. Then he addresses the technical aspect of several different forms of "solar" or renewable energy technologies, and their potential.
I am learning quite a bit, even if I have to take it in small doses
A warning..........2005-03-05
Scheer's previous work on this matter was entitled "A Solar Manifesto". That should give you a pretty accurate idea as to his opinions on the matter. If you looking for a somewhat-balanced view of the coming renewable energy economy, look elsewhere (for example, Hawken's "Natural Capitalism"). If you looking for a neo-Luddite environmentalist rant, this book is exactly what you are looking for.
There are numerous flaws in Scheer's reasoning. For example,
1: He repeatedly calls lack of taxes a "subsidy".
2: He ignores that the most promising photovoltaic technologies are based on things like titanium and ruthenium, which are not renewable and by his own data are in short supply. Even in the best case they are a complex technology that requires big, centralized plants to product (reasonably) cheaply.
3: He a priori dismisses anything big or centralized.
4: He considers a system that uses more human labor a GOOD thing.
5: In 325 pages, he never mentions the cost of PV in $$/kwh, because it would undermine his point.
6: He repeatedly insults everyone who isn't in his camp. The word "blind" must appear a hundred times in this work.
I think the greatest example of Scheer's muddled thinking is the final sentence of the book.
"Renewable resources will bring a new era of wealth-creating economic development - initiated not by bureaucratic fiat, but by the free choices of individuals".
I think many people would agree with this. Now, if Scheer hadn't spent the previous two chapters describing in detail the many bureaucratic fiats he wanted in order to enforce his ends upon free people, he may actually finished his book with a coherent point.
From a little earlier...
"Instead [eco-taxation proposals] must be founded on a clearly articulated strategy to drive nuclear and fossil fuel out of the market...
At least he is honest.

Book Description
During the 1980s, dramatic changes in the federal budget, the Federal Reserve, and the U.S. Treasury initiated the most comprehensive series of economic experiments since the 1930s. This book describes the nature of those experiments and compares them to the Keynesian experiment of the 1960s. The promises that the economic experimenters made in the 1980s were bold and confident: monetarists claimed their policies would permanently subdue inflation and unemployment; supply-siders said their tax cuts would give the economy new life with accelerated growth and a balanced budget; and free floaters promised unprecedented stability in international markets. Actual results fell far short of these ambitious promises. At first the economists denied that their experiments had failed, but when they were faced with overwhelmingly negative results that were impossible to ignore, they blamed each other for the failure. After beginning the decade as a united front against liberalism, the monetarists, suppply-siders, and free floaters ended the decade hopelessly divided. This book sorts out the actual occurrences of the 1980s. It analyzes why events unfolded as they did, what bearing the results have on the future of economics and the U.S. economy, what can be explained, and what mysteries remain.

Customer Reviews:
Not the greatest.......2002-03-07
Not exactly the greatest book I've ever owned...the computer background information is woeful (I found 3 glaring mistakes in 70 pages of material by just skimming). The book has generally good information on the software it covers and a pretty good intro to MIDI.
Not what I expected.......2002-02-02
I expected a careful, general overview of the various uses of technology in music. This book is clearly for a classroom that uses Macs and the specific software indicated. There is not one entry for Finale, nor microphone/recording techniques. The book is pretentious in its organization (academic music ed. types) and woefully lacking in providing the required general overview of concepts, and prefers to teach specific software applications, many of which are not mainstream.
Great Resource: Experiencing Music Technology.......2000-01-21
This is a great resource for a lot of people. Whethr you are a music teacher looking to enhance your music teachning with some technology, or you are a professor wanting a textbook for a music technology class you are teaching, this book has something worth-while. David B. Williams and Peter R. Webster are veterans in the field with many years' experience.
Awesome Book!.......1999-09-06
I am a student of Dr. Williams, author, and I think that this book is amazing. It's probably the easiest reading textbook I have ever had. I don't get bored when I read this book like I do other text books. This is a must have for music tech students!!
Very informative for beginners in the Music Technology field.......1999-01-26
My Music Technology class used this for last semester. It has a broad overview of the technology of Music Engineering ranging from MIDI to running the Macintosh OS. One of the best things about it is the fact that it uses mostly simple language to explain the topics it covers. Any Music Tech. student would be advised to purchase this book. Many Music Ed. majors I know also use this book. It covers how to utilize computer software in Music Theory classes and composing classes.

Book Description
After World War II, when thousands of African Americans left farms, plantations, and a southern way of life to migrate north, African American disc jockeys helped them make the transition to the urban life by playing familiar music and giving them hints on how to function in northern cities. These disc jockeys became cultural heroes and had a major role in the development of American broadcasting. This collection of interviews documents the personalities of the pioneers of Black radio, as well as their personal struggles and successes. The interviewees also define their roles in the civil rights movement and relate how their efforts have had an impact on how African Americans are portrayed over the air.

This is a comprehensive book encompassing not just the basics of MP3 both other useful information as well. The book is for all levels knowledge; from novice digital music lovers to musicians.
Although the author only briefly describes the theory behind sound and digital sound recording, he does a great job of explaining all the digital audio compression terms and other technical buzzwords such as ripping, encoding, Codecs, MIDI, WAV files, WinAmp as well as other terms. After discussing just what an MP3 is and how to use it, the author shows you how to turn you PC into a MP3 based digital work station.
Going beyond just describing MP3s, the author also shows you how to set up your home stereo system to play MP3s off of the computer or off of a CD that you just made. He also shows you how to play MP3 files off of the web or how to web cast your music play list. The final chapters are for musicians with some excellent real life stories from several musicians. The author even includes brief discussion on how musician can record, mix, master, distribute and promote their work. All in all a good and comprehensive read that is not too technical (it is a "dummies" book).
Excellent!.......2000-03-06
The Dummies Guides can be a mixed bag, but this one is very clear and informative. I especially liked the chapters on recording one's own MP3 files, something that some of the other books don't cover in as much detail. Great intro, with enough 'meat' to keep you going for quite a little while.
A Great Book for the MP3 Community!.......2000-02-24
Andy Rathbone has written a fine book for MP3 devotees, MP3 for Dummies, that provides the very basic of information that people need to get started on this fast booming craze. Rathbone offers his readers an extraordinary amount of information that the average person on the street can make use of.
MP3 has become hot news! Websites have opened up for business and offer the latest files, players and programs are being produced, the number of court cases involving copyright infringement are on the rise, one local university has blocked student access to one file distribution site due to bandwidth problems, and yes, some books have been written on the subject.
MP3 for Dummies provides detailed information about buying, downloading, creating, sharing, and selling MP3 files. Readers will learn about a number of places where they can buy and download MP3 files and where they can have customized CD's created for distribution. Readers also have the opportunity to create their own CD's provided that they have the right equipment to do so.
Speaking of equipment, readers will learn about the latest and the best MP3 players and storage devices on the market. Furthermore, they will be able to choose and use portable MP3 players and learn how to hook them up to home, office, and car stereo equipment for easy listening!
Other helpful information in the book includes the debunking of certain MP3 copyright and piracy myths, choosing and using MP3 utilities, finding Websites that distribute MP3 files, learning how to compose your own kind of music, and a variety of tips. The accompanying CD contains Windows, Linux, and Mac shareware versions of popular MP3 players, a bunch of MP3 sample tunes, and live links to Websites that distribute MP3 files!
The information in this book is first-rate! The cartoons, humor, and wit are great too! Readers will learn to experience the cool sounds of MP3 and chuckle at the same time! The book will also contribute to their better understanding and appreciation for Web development and computer technology. This is a great beginner book for the MP3 community!
