The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations.
The author's interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr.
Book Description
Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint painconditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief. This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 145,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a must have........2007-10-15
I have been suffering from TMJ for about 2 years now. As with everyone else with this condition, I have searched high and low for relief. While searching on Amazon for new insight I found this book and ordered it. After receiving it I immediately started reading it and concentrated on my area of pain. I have been using the techniques for about a week now and have been getting incredible results. Although I still have some pain, I am now going through times of day with none. What a miracle. Imagine spending all that money on specialists with no relief and then buying a book for $20.00 and getting better results. If you have any kind of pain, you need this book.
Helped eliminate my headaches.......2007-10-06
I knew I'd made a good purchase when I was flipping through the pages right after it came in the mail, looking at the diagrams of referred pain patterns, and saw the very pain pattern for the headaches I'd been having. It was an extremely gratifying experience to know that there was an actual cause for this weird pattern of pain on my head, and that there was something I could do about it. I also learned that my pressure points were caused by bad posture. So, with an adjustment to how I sit at my desk, and the massage techniques for my pressure points, I've pretty much eliminated my headaches.
The only mild criticism I have about the book is in its diagrams of massage techniques. They're very rudimentary and are all of an older looking man in what looks like a Speedo (and he has no eyes or mouth). As a woman, there are some of the pressure points that are more difficult to reach because of breast tissue and while the author addresses this in the text, there's not a single picture of a woman doing the techniques. I'd rather have had a androgenous figure than this man consistently through the book. On the other hand, the diagrams of the muscles and the pressure point location are very good.
Like I said - it's a minor point - the main reason to get the book is because its techniques are effective.
Trigger Point Therapy.......2007-09-23
The Trigger Point Therapy Workwork has allowed me to try to pinpoint the problem muscles in my leg and to do self-massage to relieve the pain. It has been useful and I do have to admit that I have had less pain than I did before using the workwork.
A must-have for anyone in pain!.......2007-09-20
I use this book regularly in my massage practice and recommend it to my clients often. The author uses clear and concise verbiage with graphics, describing the techniques. These therapies WORK!
I was skeptical, but it works!.......2007-09-18
I had my doubts - while reading it and especially after I started using the self-therapy method. I got tendonitis in one elbow nearly 2 years ago, and it has never completely healed to the point that I can use it like I could before the tendonitis. It's much better than in the beginning, but because I "baby" that arm, I got it in the other elbow about a month and a half ago. I've been wearing the elbow brace I got from the doctor when I got the tendonitis in the first elbow, and started the self-therapy about 3 weeks ago. In the beginning it (the therapy) hurt like h***! I just "knew" I was making it worse than it already was. But I kept at it, just like the book instructed, and low and behold suddenly it's 85% better. A week ago I still could not use a pump dispenser with my index finger on that arm without horrible pain, and today I could carry a 10 lb. object with that arm (no brace) with barely any discomfort.
When I originally got tendonitis in the first elbow nearly 2 years ago, it took 9 months to get to the point that I could use my arm without major discomfort (I wore the brace the entire 9 months), and it has just very gradually gotten better to the point it is at now. The first arm started out much worse than the second arm that I did the self-therapy on, but I was having major pain in this elbow and couldn't lift much of anything. About 3 days ago, it just felt like it was healing and now I'm not wearing the brace anymore either.
It's very important to read the first 3 chapters carefully, and then go on to read about your particular area of pain. The author explains everything very clearly and you do not need to have medical knowledge to use this book.

Book Description
It's one thing to be passionate about protecting the environment. It's another to be successful at it. In this book, Stroup expains why many of our environmental laws have failed us and how we might go about doing a better job protecting nature.

Eco-nomics : What Everyone Should Know About Economics and the Enviroment.......2005-09-20
~Eco-nomics : What Everyone Should Know About Economics and the Enviroment~ adroitly illustrates the vitality of market processes and private property rights while making it clear that the market is not incompatible with civil society's desire to protect the environment. Far from being detrimental to the environment, a liberal market economy, particularly over time, serves our societal goal of environmental protection. Private property encourages good stewardship and accountability, and making more "commons" is not necessarily advantageous to cause of environmental protection by any means. Many laws have been enacted to preserve scenic natural beauty and prevent pollution, but such regulations often have unintended consequences. Richard Stroup opens with a straightforward introduction to economics and the problems posed such as scarcity, and the upside and downside to competition. Stroup astutely explains how free market exchange is conducive to a prosperous society. Stroup incisively explains the consequences of strict environmental protection or "protection at any cost" measures. They are quite a few ridiculous cases where overbearing regulators trample property rights and extort exorbitant sums of money from property owners-in the name of environmental protection. Stroup clearly ascertains why public policies that erode the protection of property rights actually serve to reduce the ability and incentive of owners to protect and conserve their resources. With innovate public policy solutions, however, society can set and attain reasonable environmental protection goals while not biting the hand that feeds it. Pollution credit charges and a trading system to exchange those credits have served well. He concludes that the burden of proof for a regulatory intrusion should be on the government, not on the private property owner. Nonetheless, Stroup surmises in the end that market solutions prove more effective than mindless intervention.
Good, But One Sided.......2004-05-27
This book is NOT about economics and the environment. It IS about the up-side of using property rights and free-market capitalism to resolve conflicts with environmental regulation. The book (actually a very long essay) is very well written, but it only presents one side of this debate; nothing wrong with that, everyone does it, but in this case it should be more clearly stated. For every example of where property rights and free-market environmentalism have worked, there are examples of where they didn't. PERC is not in the business however of presenting both sides, again; nothing wrong with that. However if you are looking for a book about the general considerations of economics and the environment, Try Bionomics: Economy As Ecosystem by Michael Rothschild or For the Common Good : Redirecting the Economy toward Community, the Environment, and a Sustainable Future by Herman E. Daly. While both of these may be as biased to the other side of the issue, although I'm not sure what "the other side" is, they are much more about the use of economic theory to understand conflict resolution in environmental disputes.
Very Interesting!.......2003-06-27
Most people don't think economics is very interesting. In fact, they tend to think of economics as dry and boring. Professor Stroup has written a book that should reverse that thinking. He has taken his analytical skills as an economist and shown how the basic principles of that discipline are imperialistically invasive; that is, they can easily be applied to a broad range of topics, including the environment.
If you want to understand why some people, especially many economists, consider environmentalists to be somewhat hypocritical, this is the book to read. If you want to understand how and why even environmentalists can be at odds with one another, this is the book to read. If you want to see why economists enjoy practicing their discipline, this is the book to buy. It is not a long book, so if you want a quick lesson in basic economic principles couched in terms of an issue that should be of interest to most people, read this book. If you don?t like the book, donate your copy to a local library. I'm sure a lot of other folks in your community will find it interesting.
Economic realities of preserving the environment.......2003-06-19
Eco-nomics: What Everyone Should Know About Economics And The Environment by Richard L. Stroup (Professor of Economics, Montana State University) is a straightforward look at the practical and economic realities of preserving the environment, including learning from past mistakes and failed environmental laws, to balancing property rights and the necessities required to preserve habitats, to what truly constitutes judicious and effective use of government action. Eco-nomics is an insightful, timely, and welcome contribution to Environmental Studies reading lists and policy reference collection.

Book Description
Do you often forget the words for common things, like "husband" or "bathtub"? Have you suddenly found sub-zero temperatures pleasant? Do you survive on chocolate supplements? Ask these questions of any woman who has been through menopause, is going through it, or is soon to hit it, and she'll say yes (and then, most likely, cry). Laura Jensen Walker went into early menopause after her bout with cancer and can sympathize with other "mentalpause" sufferers and survivors. As in Thanks for the Mammogram!, she uses hilarious vignettes and a delightful mix of wit and wisdom to connect with her readers. With chapters about how "All Varicose Veins Lead to Rome" and "PMS Is a Picnic in the Park," this book helps women dealing with "mentalpause" and those around them gain a better understanding-and certainly a lighter attitude-about this passage of life. Mentalpause . . . and Other Midlife Laughs will get readers laughing at themselves as they hear Laura lightheartedly describe her age spots, lament her sagging everything, and look anew at love after forty.
Customer Reviews:
Verrrrry Funny!.......2005-01-07
This book was a riot! It really validated me as a woman over age 40, and I could relate to everything the author wrote about menopause. The author's humor is subtle and tongue-in-cheek. I was somewhat disappointed that there wasn't much in the book concerning partenting in middle age, or having a baby in midlife. For that, the best book around is "Parentaly Insane: Insights From The Edge...of Midlife!" by Julie Donner Andersen, a much more comprehensive, more bluntly honest and hilarious view of midlife womanhood, marriage, and parenting.
I can't WAIT for menopause, thanks to Laura!.......2002-09-04
Thanks to Laura I am no longer dreading menopause! Laura is not only funny but wise in her writing, and she has done a delightful job of bringing the inevitability of menopause down to everyone's level. As she says, the alternative is something I'd rather not think about.
What I love about Laura's writing is that the chapters are bite-sized for busy lives. I also love her freshness and the way I can easily give her books to friends going through the same situations. Many of my friends are not Christian but they all love Laura's style and I can't help but think God's words touch people exactly where they need to hear it thanks to Laura's humor.
It made me laugh through my hot flashes.......2002-01-17
I enjoyed Mentalpause to the max. It was upbeat and encouraging It made me laugh at myself because I could relate to all of the stories. I think Laura did a wonderful job showing women that there is a funny side to menopause. Menopause is a part of life and Laura's book shows women how to embrace it with laughter.
THANK YOU, LAURA JENSEN WALKER!.......2001-08-06
I laughed til I cried! Not only does Laura Jensen Walker relate to those women who experience menopause at the medically correct age, she also speaks to those of us who have gone thru it early in life. AND...she somehow manages to hit every avenue of it without embarassing herself or her readers! The only red face comes from the age old hot flash one may suffer thru while reading the book! There's no reason to suffer thru menopause anymore! Laura has taken that which we dreaded and made it...well, ALMOST fun! Thank you, Laura Jensen Walker for putting into words what my hot flashes have been trying to say for so long!"
Read it and laugh.......2001-07-29
Whether you're beginning the trip into middle-age, or are already there, you'll want to get this delightful book. Laura Jensen Walker has found a way to grow old gracefully-laugh about it!

The fascinating story of one of the world's most famous rock 'n' roll songs
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2006-04-11
I suppose I was always going to say that, having already been converted myself to Louie Louie as "the only rock and roll song you'll ever need" (collected 60+ versions to date). It's just a fascinating journey with so many unexpected twists and turns but the ever present "duh duh duh". And still amazingly relevant today. And funny!
Intrigue, high drama, and twists and turns.......2005-05-12
A new preface by the author graces the pages of Louie Louie: The History & Mythology Of The World's Most Famous Rock N Roll Song. While it's hard to see how any song, however famous, could earn an entire book discussion, once you delve into Dave Marsh's Louie Louie, with its intrigue, high drama, and twists and turns, it's hard to see what took so long for the full tale to come to light - and yes, it earns its own book. This new edition provides a new preface by Marsh as it covers the complexities of a song which involved even the FBI.
excellent history, memetics.......2002-01-10
By following the fate of one song Marsh gives us an excellent feel for how culture operates at a middle scale, somewhere between the micro-scale of individual performances and listenings and the macroscale of decades-long changes in musical styles. If you're interested in "memetics" but tired of empty bloviation about mind viruses and such, read this book and follow one musical meme on its tour of the memesphere.
The history of Rock'n'Roll: one song's perspective.......2001-11-05
Okay--truth be told, I bought this book as a joke. This book is no joke. Dave Marsh, an excellent writer, put together a real page-turner. (...)
Everything you wanted to know about Louie, Louie and more........1995-11-25
Half way through this book I knew more about this rock
song then I had ever wanted to know and then it kicked
in to the history of Paul Revere and the Raiders. I
keep on and she what other obscure trivia is to be
revealed.

I recommend it to everyone interested in focusing this new emerging market.
Interesting introduction with a European focus.......2004-05-21
This is an interesting book to read if you're trying to figure out the European market for digital TV or you're new to the field. The book explains the different roles of players in the market, how they interact and where the opportunies are in each sector. A high level overview of the different technologies is also given with particular focus on the economics. The writing is a little bit too academic and slow at times, however it's definitely worth the money.

Book Description
Python Standard Library is an essential guide for serious Python programmers. Python is a modular language that imports most useful operations from the standard library (basic support modules; operating system interfaces; network protocols; file formats; data conversions; threads and processes; and data storage). You can't really program in Python without using it. In this book, author Fredrik Lundh, creator of the Python Imaging Library (PIL), delivers tested, accurate documentation of all the modules in the Python Standard Library, along with over 300 annotated example scripts using the modules. Python Standard Library renders this valuable information in a clean, easy-to-read format, yet doesn't talk down to readers. This accurate and complete reference documentation is for the Python programmer who wants the facts and little else. The book is based on the author's work with the Python newsgroup: he reviewed more than 2500 questions and answers to that newsgroup in order to make sure the book covered what Python users really wanted to know. An earlier version of this book has been available electronically for over a year, so the material has been tested by Python programmers in real-life applications. This version of Python Standard Library covers all the new modules and related information for Python 2.0, the first new major release of Python in four years.

Ideal for any working Python developer, Fredrik Lundh's Python Standard Library provides an excellent tour of some of the most important modules in today's Python 2.0 standard. Mixing sample code and plenty of expert advice, this title will be indispensable for programmers.
The book presents sample script code--written by a frequent contributor to Python newsgroups--for almost 200 of the built-in modules in Python 2.0 and shows how to solve common programming problems in Python. Instead of a function-based reference, you get sample scripts for a wide variety of solutions centering on different Python modules.
Early sections look at core modules for working with the operating system, math, and strings, among other functions. Material on Python's excellent support for files and directories will help you master the file system. Explanations of various encryption schemes will let you add security to your Python scripts.
Getting Python to multitask with multiple threads comes next, along with getting Python programs to communicate using pipes and signals. After the sample scripts for pickling Python objects to and from files, the book delves into modules that are geared toward today's Internet. First, there's coverage of Python's support for XML, HTML, and SGML, followed by a discussion of its extensive networking support for low-level sockets to high-level Internet protocols, including e-mail and FTP. Sample scripts for e-mail will be really useful for any Python programmer.
Later chapters provide coverage of internationalization support in Python and its support for multimedia. The book closes with material on platform-specific modules (which are specific to Unix and/or Windows) as well as modules that are obsolete but necessary to understanding legacy Python code.
There's a lot of expertise on display in Python Standard Library. The code does much of the talking in this example-packed text, which is sure to earn its place on any working Python programmer's bookshelf. --Richard Dragan

Has been superceeded.......2006-01-26
I bought this book in 2004 when I was just starting to learn Python. I never once used it. Its not a bad book, just less useful now than in 2001.
The book covers Python 2.0. Anything before 2.2 for any Python book is probably not worth the trouble in 2006 and beyond.
When looking for information about a Python module I look in Alex Martelli's Nutshell book(2.2) and the go to the online Library Reference. The nutshell is good for background and examples and the Library Reference brings things up to 2.4.
If I am not quite sure what I am looking for then the Python Cookbook (2nd edition) is the most help.
Mark Pilgram's Dive into Python is a great, in-depth look at some of the more useful standard library modules.
I hope Alex Marelli updates his Nutsehell book for 2.4.
There are other good books for learning Python but the Nutshell(O'Reilly), Cookbook(O' Reilly), Library Reference(python.org), and Dive into Python(online or an Apress book) do the best job of covering the standard library,
One of the less useful books on Python, for me........2002-02-13
I am a relatively new programmer, who has used only Python and PHP to any significant extent, so ...
I have Python Essential Reference (1st. edition) and this book side-by-side on my shelf at work. I use Python Essential Reference and the online module documentation almost equally, and I almost never pick up this book.
Interesting, but not necessary.......2001-08-14
I was hoping for something along the lines of the book the "Standard C Library" book by P.J. Plauger. Unfortunately, this book is nowhere near as complete. Still, there are interesting and useful bits here and there, and it does serve as a decent supplement to the Python library book included in the distribution itself.
Nice Supplemental Text.......2001-06-29
This is a nice supplemental text for the Standard Library documentation. Sometimes you find yourself puzzled as to how a module is to be used, even after reading the documentation. This book provides a little extra help in that regards by providing concise examples that point you in the right direction.
I can't give it five stars because it is a little sparse for the price. Please be warned, the book is almost all code. Don't expect a great deal of explanatory text.
Good guide but not really a reference.......2001-06-22
This book isn't really a reference for the Python standard library - David Beazley's "Python Essential Reference" probably fills that gap better - but it is a very useful guide to what the library can be used for, with a comprehensive and motivated selection of code examples.
