This book was reviewed by George Orwell in (I think!) his Shooting an Elephant collection of essays for a British socialist weekly newspaper called Tribune, sometime in the early part of the Second Unpleasantness which began for us in 1939. As I remember, he said it made interesting reading but compared a general denouncing war as being comparible to a former alcoholic denouncing drink.

The book in question does not refer to war as we commonly understand it.
The general is referring to the US's interventions in Central
America in the 1930s,on behalf of US fruit companies among others. I read somewhere that the Nazis were so impressed by the dive bombing of Managua by the USAAF that they bought several of the Curtis aircraft type that had been used, which became the basis for their next design, the infamous Junkers 87 Stuka. Managua being the first city in the world to be attacked by dive bombers. The United States has done many wonderful things but this isn't one of them, sadly, and you can understand the general's disgust at the whole thing.

Old Men's Wars--Young Men's Fights.......2007-10-24

The title of this review might be considered a subtitle to this book--for has it not always been the case that the young are sacrificed in war for the "ideals" of the establishment? General Smedley makes a very good case for this after his brilliant and decorated career in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is eloquent and poignant. He decries the billions upon billions spent to make far-flung areas of the globe "safe" for American industrialists.

It is difficult not to make parallels with wars across the globe today. Wherever there is a strong business interest (and this may coincide with governemnt interest)--you will find conflict. As General Eisenhower prophesied: Beware the Military-Industrial Complex. However, this does not explain ideological wars entirely, such as those brought about by the early 20th-century Fascists, nor the Islamic-Radical-Fascists of today. However, if we look deeper, these movements also were supported heavily by moneyed interests, and behind those curtains, government businesses seeking to profit from oil, such as the Saudis, or industrialists seeking war profits, such as in the Third Reich.

Obviously, while "defending" American interests worldwide, General Smedley's cost-benefit analysis came squarely on the side of non-interventionism, as the First President, George Washington, had cautioned us. And, to be truthful, we have no idea what would have happened to American if we had not intervened in the global conflagration of World War II, and instead had spent that money on gearing up our own National Defense, which had gone fallow in the years following World War I. Even during that war, most of the industrial production of this country (the U.S.A.) never got off the docks into theatres of warfare--but the producers were paid by the government anyways.

The is a relatively quick, absurdly inexpensive, and necessary read for anyone interested in geopolitics and our national security. It challenges much-cherished assumptions about interventionism and collaboration in warmaking.

A truth bullet right in the forehead.......2007-09-03

The word "classic", like other words in the abused English language, is regularly misused. It is not misused in describing this book. And at the pittance required to buy this edition, it can also be described as the biggest bargain you will encounter all year. To call the book an "anti-war" classic is not as accurate as it might be, however, because Gen. Butler envisions the need for a standing army and navy to defend the nation. He is merely horrified at these forces being sent to fight other people's wars. Especially at the cost of all wars.

Gen. Butler writes between the two World Wars. Having earned an estimable reputation among the troops he led, he proceeded not to desert them after the war was over. He sided with the bonus marchers who built "Hooverville", and then he finished some thoughts he had been having about the role of the United States Marine Corps in a number of lesser American military adventures. He then wrote this pamphlet to explain why the country needed to rid itself of the conmen who keep taking it to foreign wars.

The work is divided into five sections:

1. War Is A Racket!
2. Who Makes the Profits?
3. Who Pays the Bills?
4. How to Smash This Racket!
5. To Hell with War!

As another reviewer has noted, Gen. Butler rendered even greater service to his country after leaving the Marines than while serving actively. In prose that is utterly direct and unadorned, he outlines the nature of war, the identities and profit margins of the criminals, the role of the propagandizing press, and the victims of the fiscal enterprise of war. He then suggests a practical method for removing the profit from the business of war: simply conscript every owner, manager and employee of the war-making industries into the war effort, 30 days before the troops are called up, at the same pay rate as the enlisted man. During WWI, that was $30.00 per month. It is an idea so simple and brilliant that it will never be tried, unless, of course, the entire population suddenly has the wool pulled from its eyes, and passes the requisite law. As a test of industrial patriotism, this idea has no peers.

(My idea for educating the masses would be to make every thirteen-year-old boy and girl read this book, pass an exam on it, and then administer the book and the exam to their parents. This would be an annual event, and a general election would be held as soon as the parents had passed their exams.)

It is depressing to read this book in 2007, note that it was written in 1935, and reflect that nothing has changed. It is also heartening to realize that the solution to the problem of war is to convey the meaning of one four-word sentence to the masses. That sentence is the title of this book. Even in a time of sinking literacy levels and short attention spans, I can imagine no more worthy project for our country.

A must read for American Citizens.......2007-07-25

While I don't agree with all of Butler's recommendations (among which is, never fight a war), many of his recommendations are great. His documentation of the Facist plot he exposed is very important. (BTW: Prescott Bush was a co-conspirator in these coup-plans, as documented by the BBC.)

Facism was a threat then, and given the growing corporatism in the USA, a threat now.

People never learn........2007-07-23

This small book is timeless in its message. Written before WW2, it applies to much of what has happened since. As Butler wrote, " Why don't those damned oil companies fly their own flags on their personal property - maybe a flag with a gas pump on it." Two Iraq wars prove Butler's prescience.

Christmas Fingerstyle Guitar.......2006-11-10

This book contains beautiful arrangments for the intermediate to advanced guitar player. Players who are not yet at an intermediate level of playing may find the arrangments frustrating. Several of the songs are in an alternate tuning. Even the simplist arrangement involves quite a bit of skill. The reward for the guitarist's work is a beautiful arrangment with depth. This book comes with a CD which allows the guitarist to hear how the arrangements should sound.

Wow........ Yes, now this is just great. You know it's always worth buying a book if 1 song is great... There are a couple of Great Arrangements from Mark Hanson in this book. You better be ready though if you start the 4 more challenging songs from this book because they are very difficult for most people. Mark Hanson has some difficult ways of playing some of the chords. I even had to rearranged some minor things to make them more playable for me. I am a Acoustic Fingerstyle Player for a couple of years now, performing almost every week but these songs need a Lot of Attention and Devotion in order to be able to play them before an audience. Take a lot of time to let the songs "Sink In" to your body.

Beautiful arrangements, but not for beginners!.......2006-06-20

This is my second Mark Hanson fingerstyle book (the other is his Beyond Basics book.) The Christmas songs in this one are very well chosen, including absolutely stunning arrangements of Go Tell It On The Mountain and In Dulci Jubilo. It's worth the price for the CD that accompanies the book, just to hear Hanson playing!

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's misleading to call four of these songs "easy." These so-called "easy" songs are definitely not what most people would think of as easy! Others have made similar comments about the book being for intermediate to advanced players, and I completely agree. But if you have a few years playing experience and are at least an "advanced beginner" with respect to fingerstyle playing, then I highly recommend this collection of great songs.

An Amazing Arranger and Teacher.......2005-12-26

I've bought so many books for solo guitar and Mark Hanson's outshine anyone else. His arrangements are amazing, and very playable, even for a self-taught guitarist like me who only reads tablature. I get many compliments on my playing now, and it's all thanks to Mark Hanson's beautiful arrangements both in this book and in his "Great American Tablature Song Book", which has such a great variety of music (and is available with others on his website, if not through Amazon). Highly recommended.

Mark Hanson Is The Best!.......2003-01-07

Between the 1-note "Easy-TAB" books and full-blown "As Recorded" tabs, there's been a void of playable tabs for the intermediate player. Mark Hanson has filled that gap, and is the top guy out there today producing interesting arrangements for the intermediate guitar player.

If you're an absolute beginner, you can safely pass this one up, but if you have a year or two of experience under your belt, this is a great set of solos for the Christmas season. Be sure to pick it up a few months early, though, because these are NOT easy. You'll have to work at them to get them sounding nice.

Mark hasn't forgotten those of you out there with more skills, either. There are a total of 12 arrangements here - 4 easy, 4 intermediate, and 4 advanced. By the time you get to the last couple of tunes, you have some serious show-off stuff going on - way over my head, but something the advanced player can dig into, and the intermediate player can aspire to.

Highly recommended for both intermediate and advanced players.

Excellent Guide To Blackadder.......2002-06-28

Blackadder, in its various incarnatios, is without a doubt THE funniest TV show of all time. This book tries to give a complete episode guide, background information, and other trivia in one small paperback. I was very suprised to find that it actually succeeds, and then some. The book is written in such a way, that everything you need to know can be found almost instantly, without an index. The list of information in here is too vast to summarize, so I'll just say BUY THIS BOOK NOW!!

Really REALLY bad..........2002-06-24

The Blackadder series is by far and away one of the best if not THE best British comedy's of all time. That is why it's so unfortunate that there is little to no good written material or satisfacory guides to it.

Out of the two this books available about the Blackadder series this one is by far the worst.

The authors seem to know exactly what to do wrong and stick to that formula throughout the book. They discuss people and shows surrounding the series but one cannot help but feel that there is too little of a connection to the Blackadder series. They give NO information about the production of the shows as some great guides like Zicree's Twilight Zone Companion does.

The most irritating part of this book is the authors' gall and audacity to re-write the jokes in the episodes. Each episode section has a bolded sub heading where basically the authors, in telling something about the episode, re-tell some of the jokes that were in that particular episode. It gets really irritating really quickly especially since the jokes are much better when watching the actual show and they are only [messed] up by having to read the changed versions in the book....

Suffice it to say this book isn't very good at all, and I would advise very much against purchasing it.

The Guidebook to the Black Adder universe.......2002-03-04

A nicely done episode guide to Black Adder. The book explores the sitcom influences on the series, gives complete descriptions of each episode, describes memorable events in each episode, describes aome programs that were influenced by Black Adder, and finishes with a section on the Black Adder Millennium Film. The book is written by a couple of fans, which makes it fun, in my opinion. It is a fun read. It doesn't go into much detail about production and it doesn't give a real in-depth analysis of the series, which is why I gave it 4 stars, instead of 5. However, some books that I've read about comedy get too analytical and make really boring reading, so the fact that this books lacks deep analysis probably isn't a terrible thing.
A good, solid, readable guide to one of the great British sitcoms of the 1980s

Disappointing.......2002-03-01

While Blackadder deserves a solid episode guide providing background and details on the creation of one of the best sitcoms of all time, Blackadder never deserved Cunning. This book isn't so much an episode guide as it is a compendium of factoids, character moments, and quotes from the show. Rather than go behind the scenes and analyze the series in depth, Howarth and Lyons take a fanboy approach to the series, and as a consequence this book reads like something written by two fans on a drunken lark off the top of their collective memories. Watch the episodes to enjoy and experience the real Blackadder, and leave books like Cunning to the wayside. This book is best avoided.

Excellent coverage, well written.......2007-08-31

I'd never done anything with databases, and SQL was an almost total mystery. So when I decided it was time to "modernize" a tracking tool I'd developed for my team using Perl and a simple flat file "database", I knew it was the opportunity I'd been waiting for to learn something useful and new: database programming. And while there are a lot of ways to develop a database application, I've always kinda wanted to learn Java.

A search for references on databases and Java didn't turn up a lot of hits that looked useful, and this book was about the only serious or substantial work focusing on my need. I bought it with some trepidation; but found it straightforward, approachable, and reasonably comprehensive. Armed with this book plus the MySQL PDF manual and Sun's online Java reference for additional details, I forged ahead and in a couple of weeks of "spare time" programming, I've designed a reasonable and usable database schema, implemented it, and populated my database with data recovered from various project archives. My tool's "not all there" yet, but I expect this book will remain relevant as I expand my humble command line tool into a servlet and GUI... it has good simple examples of all that, too.

I wouldn't lay claims to being an expert database or Java programmer, but it's pretty cool to be able to say this book helped me become competent in just a few weeks of part-time development.

Effective where it counts.......2003-08-23

I have not come across the errors in this book that some other reviewers have talked about and the code I wrote using info from this book works. My only bad words about this book are that the sections were not really ordered in with any logic, and were not very long. This was Ok though because they give enough information and coresponding well explained code examples to get the job done. I thought I was in trouble because the first half of the book didnt talk about using java and mysql on a web page but half way through they talked about servlets. With this book you can code a three tier web application that runs a store driven from your mySQL DB or you can write stand alone apps with mySQL functionality. In short this book is effective where it counts.

Good for JDBC beginners.......2003-08-09

I have bought this book because I had expected to find there some more advanced hints and tricks, especially about performance tuning and bottlenecks of Java and MySQL applications. Unfortunatelly, this book only covers the very basic problematics. It is a good kickstart for beginners, but only for them. Experienced developers should pick a general J2EE book instead.

Excellent book.......2003-06-29

I haven't found the errors that other reviewers have mentioned (that's not to say they're not there, but they weren't an issue to me). However, I have found this to be one of the most useful technical books I have ever used. I knew nothing about mySQL configuration and a passing bit of experience with JDBC and this book helped me setup an enterprise-used database that is very well designed and works like a charm. I have a TomCat servlet server running and used this developer's guide religiously. It is actually interesting to read, not only as a reference. Of course, I'm interested in this topic, so I'm a little biased, but I really recommend this book to anyone who wants to use this EXCELLENT, free DBMS and write powerful apps using Java.
