In his follow-up to Full Catastrophe Living--a book in which he presented basic meditation techniques as a way of reducing stress and healing from illness--here Jon Kabat-Zinn goes much more deeply into the practice of meditation for its own sake. To Kabat-Zinn, meditation is important because it brings about a state of "mindfulness," a condition of "being" rather than "doing" during which you pay attention to the moment rather than the past, the future, or the multitudinous distractions of modern life. In brief, rather poetic chapters, he describes different meditative practices and what they can do for the practitioner. The idea that meditation is "spiritual" is often confusing to people, Kabat-Zinn writes; he prefers to think of it as what you might call a workout for your consciousness. This book makes learning meditation remarkably easy (although practicing it is not). But it also makes it seem infinitely appealing. --Ben Kallen

A great life improvement tool book!.......2007-10-14
Jon Kabat-Zinn is the master of mindfulness. I was impressed with him as a person and teacher when attending one of his workshops last year. I think readers will be impressed with this solid introduction to his work.
I continue to regularly use this book as a resource and have gifted copies to friends.
Even if you are not yet familiar with mindfulness - or even meditation - this book is a great read for "busy" people who want more peace and tranquility in their lives. I think you will find that as you work through this book, you not only will experience more calm, but you also will experience more energy and joy within your day. Who wouldn't benefit from that?
This book is a great instruction manual for becoming more present in EACH moment of your day - whether at the office, at home with the family or anywhere else.
Use this book to learn to live more fully in the present moment and you will see your life improve. This is such a simple read, with many very brief (2-3 page) chapters. There are many gems within these pages.
Highly recommended!

A stellar example of the meaning of the word "excellence.".......2007-10-05
If you are interested in spirituality and/or meditation and are looking for a book that is both deep and clear, this is the book to read. You will find that the book is worth several book on the same subject by other people -- and it does it in an articulate, elevated, succint, no-fluff manner that will impress the heck out of you as few books ever will. I must ad a warning, more about the subject matter than about the book per se: Not everyone is ready to assimilate its contents (or any other equally serious meditation book's content, for that matter). The saying that you have to be ready for something in order to understand it applies very much in this case. I can imagine that it could be taken as too ethereal by some people -- those who are not ready. You would need to have lived and realized that there are matters of the soul that you need to take care of to receive its message. But if you are genuinely thirsty about spiritual matters: order it right away! This makes what we normally take as "Eastern" concepts accessible to an educated Western mind, and you realize that there is no need to think of it as Eastern or buddhist or use any label at all. I am really thankful for this book. You will be too.
Wherever You Go, There You Are.......2007-09-28
This can be a life changing book. It clearly outlines the concepts and methods of awareness meditation. I keep a copy on hand to give to people who paths I cross who appear to be lost in the happenings of daily life or those who are suffering major crisis. Whenever it is best to stop the world and get off. If only for a breath.
Fits great under the coffee table leg.......2007-09-21
it's easy to meditate when the book puts you to sleep. oh yeah, don't forget to send more money for the tapes. must be so you can tape your eyes open while reading it.
Book Title Says It All!.......2007-09-16
I have read several of Kabat-Zinn's works and find they are terrific self-helps! "Wherever You Go . . ." is a short, cogent helper to enable the reader to break out of the rut and look at life from a different position. The book is non-denominational and not dogmatic! Any person of any faith or atheist can find the text helpful and instructional. There are eastern philosophical references and some of the meditational technique is based on centuries old practices & techniques. This is one of the books that helped me change my life and resolve some old internal issues. It has also helped my play in Tai Chi Chuan. I highly recommend it!

AWESOME RESOURCE FOR TEACHERS!!!.......2005-06-29
This book is something that all teachers should invest in. It is such a wonderful book. It's full of great lessons that integrate writing, history, modern-day history, government, reading, and math. It makes students and teachers more aware of the current and pressing world issues in regrads to poverty, colonialism, child labor laws/workers/working conditions, food shortages, and media. The acitivities can be modified for all age ranges and ability levels. The lessons are clearly outlined, all resources are provided, and everything is so well-thought out. I love the integration of poetry--written by students---throughout the book. It really helps when teaching to bring to life and show by example what is expected from students. This book is a breath of fresh-air when coupled with district assigned text books. It will be one of the investments you can make as a teacher. Also look out for their other books--because they have wonderful articles on classroom discipline, sexual harrasment, creating effective classrooms, diversity tranining, and additional wonderful lessons. Rethinking schools is a wonderful organiziation and I am so thankful there are people out there doing such wonderful things for teachers and students!!!!!
Interesting Vignettes on a Variety of Inter-related Topics.......2005-02-01
Rethinking Globalization, a social studies reader for teachers, presents a variety of essays and classroom activities on the topic of Globalization (yes, with a capital 'g'). The book makes for easy and accessible reading, and one can, after the first 40 or so pages of the book, choose a topic of interest and go from there. The book begins by defining globalization, and placing it firmly in the context of history. It then looks at the various interconnections, from economics and trade to poverty, war and civil strife, and shows how structural elements, both political and economic, have polarized the world into a minority of 'haves' versus a growing majority of 'have nots'.
The authors overlooked not a single pressing social issue or current event. Even the awful events of 2001 garnered some comment, and these too, the authors linked to the problems and issues of Globalization. I came away with a deeper understanding of the term, which basically boils down to the wholesale commodification of all of the resources on the planet(aka Earth For Sale, hence the cover picture of the planet with a bar code across it). However, given that at least one of the contributors teaches in an inner city school, I was quite surprised that issues affecting low-income individuals, the Drug Scourge in particular, somehow did not find their way into the text. Yet, while the book is truly global in scope, many of these global issues have their direct counterpart in some very local issues, and I commend the authors for introducing US based sweatshops in an attempt to point this out.
Basically, every single cause that has received its fifteen minutes (and only 15 minutes, no more and no less) of fame has found a home under the banner/umbrella of globalization. Ongoing problems such as modernizing forces encroaching on rural and traditional cultures, union-busting via back-door utilization of low-wage labor, interventionism by foreign superpowers in the political, economic and social affairs of foreign lands, and many others received equal treatment in the text. Potential readers of this book should take note, however, of the distinct presence of rhetoric along the lines of colonialism, class struggle and solidarity (especially among the lumpen proletariat), which, though limited in insight and applicability, adds an amusing but rather dubious and tenuous dimension to the text.
The presentation of each topic is pretty much even-handed, in the sense that there is no overt idealization of primitive cultures, for example. The book, as well as its authors, do indeed have their biases, and they do the reader a good turn by stating their biases upfront. As such, the text has a level of honesty and openness most uncommon in other books on the topic of Globalization, be they for or against it. Additionally, those with an interest in a particular topic or issue raised in the text will find the resources section of the book most helpful in obtaining more information. This section of the book, however, is geared more to the needs of teachers, and provides them with ample materials for potential use in the clasroom.
I personally liked the small vignette titled 'Prayers for a Dignified Life', written by Subcomandante Marcos of EZLN (Chiapas) fame. In it, he delivers an interesting spin on the Declaration of Independence, and I also detected some faint glimmerings of the Ten Point Program of the long defunct Black Panther Party. Truly heady stuff!
In sum, for those who want to know what all the hub-bub surrounding globalization is about, this is the book to read.
An incredible resource!.......2003-12-30
Bill Bigelow and Bob Peterson have put together a compendium of articles that attest to their central claim that, when thinking about the globalization phenomenon, "everything is connected. You can't really understand what's going on in one part of the world without looking at how it's related to everything else." Poetry, essays, illustrations, graphs, memoirs, and classroom exercises (one of my favorites: "How do you live on 31 cents a day?", p. 145) are collected that deal with colonialism, sweatshops, child labor, food production and distribution, consumerism and culture, and neoliberal capitalism. The selections are written by some of the best people in the field, and are almost always interesting. My only reservation is that Bigelow and Peterson could've spent more time on the military connection. But then one book can't be expected to do everything.
Bigelow and Peterson teach high school and fifth grade, and the anthology was clearly born from their desire to dialogue with their own students about globalization. But the anthology isn't limited to teenagers. It's actually a quite sophisticated and close-to-comprehensive collection that I intend to use in one of my own college classes on peace and justice. It fits a number of audiences nicely--high school, undergraduate college, lay reading.
Highly recommended! It would make a great post-Christmas, anti-consumerism gift.

Hysterically funny.......2005-04-10
Especially the parts about the Catholic Church: "In all the world, perhaps only Lyndon Johnson could understand how lonely a place Shemp and Pope Paul VI occupied."
At the time I wrote this, all reviews were either 1 or 5 stars, nothing in between. Readers loved it or hated it. I would imagine that all readers would have strong reactions, one way or the other.
Must NOT Be The Haircut.......2003-07-16
In Last of the Moe Haircuts, the actual Stooge content is minimal, the humor is nominal and much of Flanagan's dated satire completely misses the mark. Only Stooge completists should bother adding this title to their libraries.
Satire Worthy Of Swift.......2000-04-21
A tremendous satirical review of the Three Stooges impact on popular culture. I would recommend this title highly to anyone. The succession of the papacy as compared to the third stooge position (Popes John XXIII, Paul VI, and John-Pauls I & II vs. Curly, Shemp, Joe, and Curley-Joe)is alone enough genius to make the price worthwhile.
Book Description
With the pending release of a major motion picture (Beyond the Sea) about Darin, directed by and starring Kevin Spacey, Al DiOrio has revised this look at the performer's life, first published by Running Press in 1981, now featuring a new epilogue and catalog of Darin's works in music and film. Bobby Darin was a brilliant vocalist, song stylist, six-time Grammy nominee, as well as a singer-songwriter, an Academy Award nominated actor, and a stage performer who dazzled crowds in Vegas. He was just beginning to savor fame when he died, of complications from childhood rheumatic fever, at age 37.

A Must for a Fan.......2007-09-16
This book is special and I have read & reread it. So informative no punches pulled but written with love & affection. Don't miss it.
Beyond "Beyond The Sea".......2007-08-04
A Well-written Bio of a very talented singer/composer/actor/performer. I learned a lot about Mr. Darin (Sorry, but I can't remember his Birth Name.) Apparently Dodd's book , rather than this one, was the basis for the movie. Too bad, says Bobby's Half Brother. HOWEVER I do not see any glaring differences between the film and this bio. But the scene in the movie where Bobby acknowledges his "real" Mother, apparently never happened. If you had a competiton back in the 60s (Ala ESPN's "Who's now") between Bobby and (say) Ricky Nelson I think Bobby would've done very well.
The first of the bios of superstar Bobby Darin.......2006-01-06
I really appreciate this bio because it was written long ago, before the recent flurry of Darin bios, when there was little info out there on the subject. It was also the first (I think) to report on Darin's family secret about his mother and sister.
Tho' it's written in a fairly dry style and has some errors, it's recommended to any Darin fan. Diorio have expertise on Darin; he appeared on both video bios - the A&E Songmasters bio and PBS's Beyond the Song.
Bobby Darin Rules!! Great Biography!!.......2004-07-15
This is a great biography of the late, great singer entertainer Bobby Darin.Bobby,we all love and miss you!!

CLICK, I just bought a CD-ROM to train my ear to isolate vowel sounds.
CLICK, last year's version of the state reading exam will appear at your classroom door before ten o'clock tomorrow morning.
CLICK, the teacher down the hall just solved his problem with that vapid hall display for his tree unit.
Shopping has become so quick and easy that we now have little time to think about what we buy and why we buy it. Whether it's phonics programs, test prep kits, or bulletin board borders, everywhere we turn someone is trying to sell us something that will improve our teaching. Like the rest of our lives, literacy education has never been so commercial. And it takes the wit and wisdom of someone like Patrick Shannon to put this buy-it-all, buy-it-now hype into some perspective.
Part storybook, part consumer manual, part manifesto, iSHOP You Shop is a guide to becoming a savvy shopper, explaining how we can spot a lemon and addressing why we desire to buy reading commodities in the first place. Using shopping as a metaphor for asking questions about things and buying as a metaphor for making decisions about our lives, Shannon probes the commerce of literacy that seems to paraphrase Descartes' maxim: I shop, therefore, I am.
iSHOP is a quick read that will stay with you for a very long time.

Probably the best shortwave buying guide available.......2007-05-28
The Passport to World Band Radio book series is great for honest and very crtical reviews of shortwave equipment. I bought this (2006) edition along with the WRTH book of the same year and I found the information in the Passport book to be considerably more interesting and up-to-date.
Indeed I'd say their shortwave radio reviews are almost too critical. However, I prefer their harsh reviews over other sources that seem to like everything.
Whether you decide to save a few dollars buying this older edition or choose to buy the latest "Passport" book, you can't go wrong.
Shortwave Listeners can use this........2007-02-17
Lots of Information for Shortwave Listeners. Interesting equipment reviews and articles. Not as easy to use as the World Radio TV Handbook though.
Excellent guide for the beginner !.......2006-11-20
I don't have alot of shortwave experience, have only really just basically tuned around the various bands, without really knowing much about the way shortwave works. This book really goes into the hows and whys of shortwave listening, and provides a great resource for the beginner!
I also really appreciated the radio reviews, since I was considering a new radio, and already had two of the radios listed. I found the reviews to be very accurate, and they helped me make an informed decision on my latest radio purchase. I also actually enjoyed the many advertisements, they also provide interesting information on radios and other products for the shortwave listener.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that wants to listen to shortwave radio, I know it helped me out alot!
Must Have Every Year!.......2006-08-30
There is nothing like the Passport to World Band Radio. If you are interested in shortwave radio, you should get every edition as soon as it is available.
Excelent Shortwave Radio Guide.......2006-07-10
This publication is the best shortwave radio guide that I have come across. Super reports on various shortwave radios that are on the market, giving you information which helps in selecting your next radio. Much information about different countries and their shortwave transmissions. This is a got-to-have guide.

Book Description
Java Web Services in a Nutshell is a high-speed tutorial and a quick reference for the technologies that Sun Microsystems is creating for implementing web services with Java. This book is a succinct introduction and handy reference to the Java/XML APIs, more commonly known as the JWSDP or "Java Web Services Development Pack." These APIs are taking the Java world by storm, as they are capable of handling everything from simple XML to SOAP to full ebXML vocabularies. Although "web services" technology has suffered from much hype and overly grand expectations, there is plenty of solid development going on, especially in extending enterprise applications, and a huge amount of this development is being done in Java. As a result, the J2EE APIs for web services are evolving rapidly, and this new "in a Nutshell" book covers them all in depth. One of the most important APIs in the JWSDP is JAX-RPC (Java API for XML-based RPC). It's also the API that developers most consistently post questions about. Java Web Services in a Nutshell covers all aspects of JAX-RPC in detail, with tutorial coverage alone exceeding 150 pages. This book offers developers everything they need to program with JAX-RPC. Java Web Services in a Nutshell begins with an introduction to Java web services, including a discussion of how they differ from web applications. The author looks at the protocols and interfaces that underpin web services, the J2EE technologies that address web services, WSDL as the means for describe web services, and more. Subsequent chapters cover:
- JAX-RPC
- SOAP and the SOAP with Attachments API for Java (SAAJ)
- Reliable SOAP messaging with JAXM
- WSDL
- Advanced JAX-RPC
- JAXR, the XML-based registry API
- Web Services Tools
The balance of the book is made up of an API Quick Reference containing documentation for the various API packages. Intended for Java developers who need to implement Java services or who need their applications to access existing web services, Java Web Services in a Nutshell delivers practical information to help developers make sense of the rapidly changing and poorly organized official documentation. If web services and Enterprise Java are any part of your job description -- of if you'd like them to be -- you'll want this book close beside as you work.
Customer Reviews:
a good reference book........2007-01-17
A good reference book for Java Web Services. It had most of what I was looking for. Lacked depth and samples but the nutshell series was always meant to be more a reference than a tutorial.
Good book if you've already been introduced to web services........2004-01-08
If you start reading about web services developed in Java, you'll quickly find that there are a number of Java technologies that come into play. These include SOAP, UDDI, WSDL, and others. Since you'll need to know about all of them to effectively develop your services, you'll need a book that covers those areas in detail. One of your choices would include Java Web Services In A Nutshell.
Like all Nutshell books, this is not an entry-level tutorial on the subject. It assumes preexisting knowledge so that less time is spent on the basics and more space can be devoted to the more complex intricacies of the technology. If the chaptersin the table of contents do not sound familiar, you're most likely not ready for this book. And yes, I would also include myself in that group...
The first 2/3's of the book cover the different web services packages, both conceptually and in practice with examples. You should be able to use the examples to jumpstart your own development efforts. The last 1/3 of the book is the traditional documentation of the package API information. As with most Nutshell books, this will be the area that quickly becomes worn and dog-earred.
Conclusion
If you are past the "What are web services?" stage, this book will be of value to you. If you are still trying to figure out what all the hype is about, I would recommend a more entry-level book like Java Web Services by O'Reilly.
Good reference book.......2003-12-08
Like the other Nutshell books in O'Reilly's series, this too is designed to provide the most valuable information in the least space possible. Some people criticize the Nutshell series over this issue, but it is really the strong point of this book-it is designed to be used as a desktop reference. I have always liked the Nutshell book, and this one is no exception.
Again, this book isn't designed to be a how-to, and O'Reilly doesn't claim it as such. It's designed as a desktop reference, which is really where this book shines. Java web service developers will find this a valuable addition to their library.
Very good book.......2003-11-18
This book is a very good book to start with web service. The explanation and examples provide most of needs to start with a web service project. It has sufficient details to use Sun tools. Readers can easily found most of their interests on this topic. The major drawback is the short of coverage on implementations of weblogic or websphere, which are of interests of most programmers. This is excellent book for starters or mid-level developers
Good for a "nutshell" book but incomplete........2003-10-26
I found this book gave a good overview of JAX-RPC and JWSDK
features. But this book is very specific to the Sun JWSDK
implementation. There is nothing on Apache AXIS or differences
between implementations. The biggest deficiency for me was that
there is nothing at all on DIME and it only dicusses the
non-standard Sun JWSDK SOAP with MIME attachments API without
mentioning any alternatives.
