Book Description
The year is long enough
without being reminded of unpleasant things.
Lemony Snicket is renowned throughout the literary world as an author one really ought to avoid thinking about. HarperCollins is pleased to present a calendar that makes such avoidance very difficult. With lavish illustrations and distressing commentary, this calendar will remind you of nothing but Lemony Snicket, the Baudelaire orphans, Count Olaf, sleet, and other woeful things you are better off without.

Really Cool!.......2006-01-04
I loved this calender. It was so gloomy that it's funny! My fave poem was: Here comes a candle to light you to bed, here comes a chopper to chop of your head. It could have had more gloomy poems though!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE this Calender But..........2005-11-09
aren't they going to make one for 2006? I got the 2004 one and really enjoyed it (particularly the quotes and sad literary days). When 2005 came out, I promptly bought a copy. I would really like to take down 2005 and have a 2006 ready to replace it.
Oh well. Maybe I'll find something else then.
a very fantastic series.......2004-12-06

Book Description
"Magisterial in its historical sweep, fiercely democratic in its vision, Whose Millennium? is the thinking person's 'bridge to the 21st century.' There is an alternative to rampant inequality and the corruptions of power, and-ever so modestly and persuasively-Daniel Singer points the way."
--Barbara Ehrenreich
This visionary book challenges the chorus of resignation-the notion that there is no alternative, that profit is the best relationship between people, and that the market guarantees democracy. Daniel Singer insists that a more free and egalitarian society can be won, and he predicts that the new millennium will be an age of confrontation, not consensus, with Western Europe as a probable first battlefield.
In social criticism of rare scope and insight, Singer probes the outcome of the Russian Revolution and Russia's post-1989 turmoil, the transformation of the Polish trade union movement Solidarity into a reactionary and clerical force, the failure of social democracy in Western Europe, the emergence of an unbalanced world after the collapse of one superpower, and the massive 1995 strikes and demonstrations in France-which, Singer argues, were the first revolt against the prevailing idea that there is no alternative to market stringency.
As an alternative, Singer calls for "realistic utopia": a politics engaged with present-day possibilities but daring to pursue a world beyond capitalism, one that would put into consistent practice the ideals of democracy and equality.
Customer Reviews:
Cant and rhetoric.......2002-09-20
This is a couple of articles padded out into a book. The potted histories of the USSR, Poland etc. are completely superfluous. The only original work is in the last 3 chapters. Even there, however, there are lots of problems, including more secondhand histories for no reason. Social Democracy is dismissed in a few pages as "in crisis." This allows him to make the case for revolution instead of reform. When we finally get to the argument, he makes no attempt to respond seriously to potential objections. In short, very heavy on rhetoric and cant, and very light on careful analysis.
Very best book on next steps for democratic socialism........1999-08-31
In an US idiom, Singer brilliantly analyzes the way capitalism has run amok. Globalization of attacks on human rights, dishonest pay for honest work, and privatization of unemployment insurance, social security, and other hard-won benefits for the average guy are all placed in their proper context. Singer is the son of a prisoner of Stalin's gulag. He proposes ultrademocracy in all major public sectors, starting with unions, not ignoring the central banks and their international arms. Singer is a clear, gracious, brainy advocate for human decency above the cruelties of the market, not excluding US executives and speculators getting 400 times the pay of the average wage earner.
A brilliant defense of democratic, revolutionary socialism.......1999-06-02
Daniel Singer's newest work is a brilliant analysis of contemporary capitalism and a direct and convincing challenge to the notion that "there is no alternative" to the current social system. Singer's defense of the classical Marxist view that capitalism is incapable of providing a meaningful and secure existence for the majority of the world's population is accompanied by an equally merciless critique of both the former bureaucratic regimes in the USSR and Eastern Europe and western social-democracy and liberalism. For Singer, the alternative to both the barbarism of modern capitalism and the failures of stalinism and reformism is a mass, democratic movement of working people. Only such a movement, beginning in the workplaces and extending its challenge to all aspects of social life under capitalism, could have the power to overthrow the existing system and create a humane and democratic socialist alternative.

Funny.......2000-04-22
This book is about the author's experiences and thoughts as a normal American. It is a great way to use up usless time because the stories are short yet they really make you think of life today, 20 years ago(when it was written)and through recent history. I also think it is a good book to read when your not in the mood for class for this book has little to none.
Customer Reviews:
READ Reviews first on any book purchase, could save you $$$.......2006-10-02
PASS PASS PASS on this selection... I received this guide and was oustanded at the guide with everyother page being a one liner quote... Of the 52 pages half are these quotes nothing to do with music industry, then each "Chapter page" takes another page... Basically you get about 11 pages of nothing... Information that is readly available on almost any music website... However, on most music websites you get more detail...
You should pass on this , whatever, the author wants to call it, its not a book, however, it is a guide how to loose your money on the purchase or a guide to one liners... I guess I should have read the review by Quentin Black before hand, funny thing is that Quentin Black is giving a thank you in book by author, strange...
Good.......2006-05-15
A good book with concentrated information and statistics. The information and methods are presented in an easy and understandable manner and are professionally structured. You’ll find a lot of useful information about most of the aspects of starting a record label and also the book warns you about the possible dangers you might encounter. Beginners and professionals alike won’t have any problem in understanding the book and eventually following its advices.
Honest review........2005-07-27
This book was seriously a waste of time, money and a poor twig. i saw twig because this book is so thin, whereas i would have said tree. Infact this is as small as a leaflet you get in your local GP. Its a complete waste of life. Seriously, let me elaborate:
Im, like you, on the look out to start a label. Look at that cover, it tells me, this is handy. The 50 pages are weak, 25 of which contarin pathetic one liner quotes like "success is the best revenge" ahaha there is nothing else on the page! What does that have to do with making a label? Its really poor, although I returned my copy asap, my friends were urging me to keep it because of how terrible the one liners, grammatical errors and unfinished sentences are i.e. "i would recommend that if" and thats it. nothing else. It doesnt help at all, all references are USA based and those references are so weak, ie. VH1's address? On the back, noteably there is a hillarious image of a man (the "author ") with his african daughter and theres even a photo date stamp ahaha, its really bad. Steer clear. Ive never written an amazon review, but this was so bad , I had to. Its the second time I put a review on this item, but amazon wont publish it for some reason? Take this book out of your store amazon, i couldnt believe you could sell this type of garbage. You HAVE BEEN WARNED. He also keeps saying "read my other book, words of wisdom" which is a JOKE because if thats anything like this God help us! One chapter is called "your cd release party" it is exactly 45 words for the whole chapter. THe whole book is like that. And the content is TERRIBLE "your cd release party is very important, so make sure you have cd's with you". And on that note of wisdom...click away..on that close window button on your browser! The author has to stop saying "contact me for help". I think HE needs help. Published independantly, go figure.

The Right Start!.......2007-05-04
My band and I were tired of chasing the dream of being signed with a huge record label. Someone mentioned to me one day that the best way to get your music heard is to start your own indie record label. Sounds easy enough but we didn't know where to begin. I did a few google searches and found this material. Now we are off to a fantastic start. This book is full of tips and is a complete step by step guide for those looking to start their own label. Without this book, we might of remained lost. Thanks for writing such an informative guide! Now we can really get our music and the music of other indies heard!
Excellent Buy.......2006-12-23
I bought this book recently and found a wealth of information throughout the guide. It is a must to buy if you want to start your own record label. The book contained a lot of stuff that I didn't know about the music industry and I will find it invaluable throughout my career.
Learn something new..........2006-12-21
I have just finished with this book and it gives you a lot of information. I thought I knew a lot about the music biz but this book proved me wrong. It always amazes me how the digital world has made it possible to do things that would have been impossible before without a lot of money.
Even if you are just a group starting out and looking for a label, this book would be worth your while.

Recommend this to all! .......2007-05-09
I was definitely experiencing some stress while figuring out how to start my own label. I have spent a couple of years tryin to get my sound heard. It is now my time to record and produce my own music. This book was an awesome guide on how to do just that. Definitely simplified the whole process for me.
Looking for a Record Label? Why not just start your own?.......2006-12-23
Who doesn't dream of owning their own record label? C'mon everybody does. I did the walk to walk from record company to record company. That's a blast, but it really gets you nowhere. So I came upon this book, and a light went on.
Cohen lays it down, step by step. I learned how to set up my own company, market it, and make it a last. I'm just starting, but already it's worth every penny!
Learn Everything You Need To Know About the Music Industry.......2006-12-23
I just got this in about 2 weeks ago so I have not had a chance to really dig into it, but so far from what I see Secrets to Making Money In the Music Industry is an excellent resource no matter what part of the music business you are in. This is a great guide for those who are looking to make money with their music, but they just don't know where to start. Ty has uncovered every secret that would take musicians years to learn. This CD set is just what every musician or band manager needs. The strategies work and they are easy to understand and implement. I'm only 1/4 way thru the set and I already have pages and pages full of notes.
Wealth of Information.......2006-12-21
This book is a wealth of information. It takes you step by step into how to set up a record label, get the artists signed and make money. Then as if that wasn't enough it shows you how to promote your artists and label, all on a shoestring budget. I am just finishing the book now and can't wait to get started.
I would recommend this book to anyone out there who has a group or knows of a group wondering how to get started in the industry.
Ty Cohen's done it again!.......2006-12-21
Ty Cohen's done it again! In "How to Start Your Own Successful Record Label in 21 Days or Less!", he shows you how to eschew the traditional, tedious process of signing your soul over to a major record label by simply forming your own. With a clear strategy, having your own label is a lot simpler than most people realize, and Cohen does an excellent job of simplifying even the most complicated parts of the process. This is truly a step-by-step guide with ample material to get you up and running within three weeks. Perfect for musicians of every experience level and genre.

Book Description
At least one third of India’s billion inhabitants regularly watch Indian soap operas, which have displaced popular cinema as the prime entertainment genre. And in the Indian diaspora on every Continent, Indian soap operas are a feature of life -- a source of pleasure, discussion and shared identity.
This book characterizes the forms of these soap operas and relates how they have evolved. It explores how they have contributed to shaping the identity of modern India. Initially developed by the national telecast service, Doordoshan, specifically to convey messages about women’s role, contraception and other family issues. Doordoshan also engaged viewers with serializations of the two great epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabarata. But with the onset of cable TV, soap operas became primarily entertainment driven and progressively more sensational. The book traces the impact of these different strands of soap operas and considers their impact on India’s dominant concerns: the search for national unity, identity, the changing role of women, and the ideology of consumerism.
"Soft Soaping India" is the first book to study Indian televised soap operas in all its forms and will be essential reading for students of the media and sociologists interested in India and its diaspora. It will also be relevant to Women’s Studies.
