Book Description
Photoshop is one of those programs that's so cool you just want to dive right in and start creating--but by plunging in head-first, without any guidance, you're likely to miss a lot. There's a solution: With this book, you learn by doing, getting your feet wet immediately as you progress through a series of hands-on projects that build on your growing Photoshop knowledge. Simple step-by-step instructions, review questions at the end of each chapter, and a companion CD with all of the book's project files make learning a breeze as the Adobe Creative Team takes you on a self-paced tour of the image-editing powerhouse. Completely revised to cover all of Photoshop CS's new features (including a new file browser, nonsquare pixel support, Layer comps for creating design variations, and more), the book starts with an introductory tour of the software and then progresses on through lessons on everything from Photoshop's interface to more complex topics like color management, Web graphics, and photo retouching.

A step-by-step photoshop guide.......2007-10-06
I think this is an extraordinary book for learning photoshop. I had to purchase this as my textbook for school but i would say that anyone should buy it to learn photoshop. It gives step-by-step instructions to numerous projects which are included in a cdRom in the back of the book. If you're learning CS it's the perfect learning tool.
Had to look online for what I wanted to do.......2007-08-15
I thought this would be a good book to learn Photoshop with because it came from the software maker. Unfortuately this was not the case. By following the book's instructions, I was not able to add a simple border to an image. I ended up doing a Google search from which I found the instructions on an online forum. As it turned out the Adobe book had left out a step of how to select the image. (You can't just click on the image) So, as a result of this missing step, the menu item I needed was grayed out so I couldn't add the border. Also, the pictures in the book are not in color, they are black & white only. This makes it difficult to figure out which tool bar icon they are trying to get you to go to.
I just bought another Photoshop book because this one is useless.
Great Book, Easy To Use.......2007-05-13
This book helped me out a lot. I'm glad I purchased it. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the basics of Adobe Photoshop CS.
Adobe Photosop Cs.......2007-03-09
The book and CD arrived in a very short time in excellent condition. I am very pleased with it thank you.
Don't Buy It Without the CD.......2007-03-02
If you buy used, be sure the CD is included as it is essential to following the lessons. I am ordering a second copy, new, so I will have the CD.
Book Description
With its ever tightening integration with Adobe's full suite of creative products and its own increasingly sophisticated feature set, InDesign is winning legions of Quark converts. If you're among them--or if you've decided to sidestep those programs altogether--you need this book! In these pages, the Adobe Creative Team uses a series of project-based lessons, tested in the company's own classrooms and labs, to provide a thorough grounding in the InDesign school of page design. You'll find step-by-step lessons in InDesign CS fundamentals plus plenty of the advanced tips and techniques you need to take your page designs to the next level. The workbook-style format includes self-paced lessons followed by review questions to reinforce the knowledge and a CD with all of the files required to complete the book's projects. Throughout, special focus is given to the features new to InDesign CS: an updated Story Editor, nested styles, separation previews, the Package for GoLive command, and more.

Great step by step guide........2007-09-25
This book is highly recommended. We are using it as our class room text book. I have version CS3 and still find the book very helpful (However I would probably buy the CS3 edition if I had a choice.) This book dives right in! You are doing magazine lay out with columns, flowing text, and graphics almost immediately. It assumes a basic comfort level with computers from the outset. I had been working with In Design for 3 months before I started working with this book. I find the book takes me far beyond what I was learning on my own. There is nothing like learning through doing exercises, and the exercises are well designed. Enjoy!!
check your CS-version !.......2007-08-26
the confusing title "InDesign CS" should be "InDesign CS (version1)" to make clear that it's not for CS2
Good for the Basics.......2007-04-10
This is not a comprehensive tutorial to InDesign CS but it is a thorough introduction. The lessons are thoughtfully arranged and build upon each other and do a good job of teaching the basics but the treatment is not thorough and neither is it comprehensive. There is still much to learn. The book is helped by the inclusion of a CD which contains the needed files to complete the exercises.
The big problem is that InDesign CS is such a complex program. It is not going to be taught simply and in short order. This book will familiarize anyone who wants to learn the program but much will be left to learn.
Next Best Thing To Being There..........2007-02-09
New software, especially something as daunting as InDesign, can often intimidate a user. 'Classroom in a Book' is amazingly easy to use and answers the vast majority of questions that typically arise when one is struggling to master something as complex as this Adobe program.
I highly recommend this book as a step-by-step means to achieving an amazing degree of competence in formatting documents of any length and complexity.
Adobe Indesign Cs Classroom in a Book (Classroom in a Book).......2007-02-08
The book will teach you how to use Adobe Indesign, but it's a little tedious. You certainly have to have patience when dealing with this book.

Racy humor and good food.......2001-10-16
Fun book. As the author points out, first cookbook I took to bed.
Receipes are somewhat basic, almost all with a healthy slant. Book is set up starting with appetizers and finishing with desserts. Many suggested menus using the books receipes.
This book is a screamer!.......1998-05-15
I had this delivered to my office, and it just so happens that a co-worker had been bugging me for my fudge recipe. I went to her and said, "so, you really want that fudge recipe?" She said, "you know I do, I've been begging for it for weeks." So, I handed her the book, page opened to "Throw Me Down . . . Fudge." You have to get the book to get the full thrill of this - you'll love it! (I'm getting a copy for my mother for Mom's Day - a little late...)
What a great Gift..I gave away a dozen this year at X-mas.......1998-02-10
What a great Idea! This cook book made me laugh...
We had a dinner party, and had more fun talking about the cook book, and the selections that we had made for dinner, than we had over our normal conversation...
What a great gift to share a laugh and a great meal!
Worth every penny!!! and part goes to charity!
-- Peter Rohkamm
A fun gift at least.......1998-01-04
I never thought there would be a cookbook that I could not review. The book I have reviewed this week came close, but I figured I could review it, but I could not publish it in my printed column, or mention most of the recipe names in print. Who could ever print a book that would quiet me, a well known outspoken person? Susan Lee Mintz, that's who. The name of her book and publishing company will give you some idea, but I have decided to print it on my website will some descretion. You will see what I mean as we go on.
Susan Lee Mintz is the Author of Safe Sex Never Tasted So Good, published by Boner Publications. This is without any doubt one of the most fun cookbooks I have not only owned (and I now have over 600 of them), but one that I have also read (this book will be available through my website and is available). The recipes are very good recipes. The ingredients are almost all very readily available.
The problem lies in the names of the recipes. Picking out the printable ones, please remember that I am selecting what I think are the more appropriate ones: Beat My Meatballs, Holey Guacamole, Bangers, Don't Rush Me Dressing, French Kissed Dressing, Unzip Me Dressing, Straddle Me Salad, Gar Lick Me Dressing, Tongued Tuna, Cock Au Vin, Lay Sagna, Quiche Me Lorraine, Sensuous Snapper, Hair Pasta With Pesto Sauce, Down And Dirty Rice, The Crown Jewels, Bloomer Pudding, Whipped Cream With Utter Delights, Fuzzy Navels, Three-Some Cookies,Knight Stick, Chocolate Orgasm, and Rolled Ice Cream Balls are just a few of the many fantastic recipes. I wish I could print the name of the fudge, but I just can't so I will recommend buying the book yourself.
This book is not only full of useful recipes, but it makes a great gift. There are over 110 recipes in this book, and as the author put it in her own words, "Give me a dirty, sexy-word, and I'll give you a great healthy recipe!"

Misleading advertisement.......2005-01-13
The cover, the graphic design, the general presentation of this book will make you believe that you are buying the original (and beautiful) arrangements of Diana Krall's CD. Don't be mislead. The arrangements in this book are no different from the ones you find in the Real Book, which also contains other hundreds of songs. The guitar parts are poorly written and, in some cases, definitely wrong. A case of misleading advertisement.
Here's how to get the real thing.......2004-02-28
The songs from two books on Diana Krall from Hal-Leonard do not represent the actual recordings. You will be disappointed. To get the real thing go to www.musicroom.com and search Diana Krall. You should find two song books called The Collection and The Collection Vol 2. Both contain faithful representation of her recording with the most beautiful and accurate chords!
Misleading Title.......2003-11-19
If you're expecting the same arrangements as heard on the Diana Krall: Live in Paris DVD or CD, you'll be most disappointed as I was. This Hal Leonard publication includes Hal Leonard arrangements of the tunes from Diana's live concert. Nope, nothing by Claus Ogerman in here. I don't even know if they're in the same key as from the concert. I already have some of these exact same arrangements in other books of standards for piano. If you want original transcriptions of pieces performed by Diana Krall in Paris, this is nice. If you want Diana's version of Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" or Diana's version of anything for that matter, this is not it.

Cooking with Copernicus.......2001-05-17
This book showed up, because of its title, on a cookbook site. But hopefully the little old lady from Dubuque won't order it; she will be in for quite a shock. Copernicus again starts to flesh out holidays and rituals that can transcend religious and national factions and bring all of humanity together. Maybe someday Christmas, Hannukah, Diwali, Solstice, Ramadan, Saturnalia, and Kwaanza will be distant memories and people will be celebrating the holidays of Copernicus again and hir philosophy, omnimodal polypossibility.
Book Description
A brilliant attempt to stitch the 26 years of Doctor Who into a coherent narrative. This is an esssential reference for fand and a hilarious introduction for newcomers.

An Enjoyable Twist on the Traditional Episode Guide.......2005-09-30
I found it interesting that some people have complained that this book tries to explain inconsistencies in continuity over the many seasons of Doctor Who rather than serving as a more traditional episode guide. With respect to those reviewers, explaining these inconsistencies is pretty much the whole point of the book.
There are numerous episode guides to Dr. Who available (both in print and online). What makes this one different is its attitude (irreverent yet loving) and its execution (creative answers to questions like, how is it that the 2nd Doctor knows about things that happened after his trial by the Time Lords).
At times, this retroactive continuity fest gets a little outrageous (1993's Dimensions in Time), and it is disappointing that the 1996 Paul McGann film wasn't included in this re-issue. Still, this is the book that made me want to revisit, re-evaluate and ultimately better enjoy a number of Who stories. I think most who read with that mindset will have a similarly positive feeling about it.
Not for the unitiated.......2005-05-31
The book is a lot of fun to read. Knowing what it takes to put a TV show together, getting to see all of the little mistakes and to have curious bits pointed out that only a fan would see is great. I've not been a fan of Doctor Who in the past but I've been watching the new series, which is excellent. It is also in keeping with the Doctor's well-storied past, at least based on the little I've seen of previous Doctors.
But you really have to know much more about the episodes to get the full value out of this book. Many of the episodes are lost or simply not yet available. This is sad, because as low-tech and dated as those shows probably were (are), they presented some great adventures. This book will not really fill you in on all of that, though.
The authors needed to do a few things to make this book work for everyone. With their wealth of knowledge it would have taken little time for them and little space in the book. Here's what is (crucially) missing:
1. Short episode synopses. While you can gleen the general story from the comments made, a clear recitation of the storyline would have been very helpful.
2. Profiles. It would have been nice to have profiles on the main characters - the Doctor and his companions. Maybe a page on how each Doctor was played, some interesting bits about their tenure, etc. As there were only 7 Doctors covered in this book (and why not the eighth Doctor? The Fox movie - considered part of the canon by many - was made many years ago. For the new edition they could have added a few pages) you wouldn't take up a lot of space giving this very important information. Also, paragraphs on each of the companions would have been nice. We're given some nice profile-style info on the Daleks, etc. But it's sprinkled about and difficult to find.
3. Comings and Goings. Doctor Who is about change. It would be nice to have a clear understanding of when someone new came on or someone old left. "This was X's last episode." Very easy to do.
4. An Index. Would have been nice to jump around and compare and contrast, say, all the Dalek information.
5. A history of Gallifrey and the Time Lords. As this is a central part of Doctor Who, understanding them and how they fit into the series would have been wonderfully helpful. We're given about a page and a half, and maybe that's enough for some people. For a show that was on the air for nearly 3 decades, I think those subjects deserve to have those entrees expanded.
Still, I have enjoyed this book fairly much. I'll be getting another book with, probably, more stogy information, but hopefully with greater detail.
Tons of information about Doctor Who........2005-03-28
This book is great, full of goofs, interesting dialogue, the roots (sources) of many of the stories, fashions, screw ups and lots of humor. But while the book examines each and every episode it does not tell you what happened within the episode. In other words, it tells you how something does not make sense without telling you WHY it didn't make sense. UNLESS you have ALREADY seen the episode. In other words, if you are a fan, this is the book for you. But if you are new to Doctor Who? this won't make sense. In other words there is no summary of any of the plots.
So, for a fan, it is five stars. For a person new to the show, it is worthless untill AFTER they watch a few episodes.
ENJOY!
Won't Watch Doctor Who Without It!!!.......2005-01-10
Since receiving this book, I can't watch a Doctor Who episode without it. I don't know how the authors could analyze and link all the episodes together, but they did. I love to read the fluffs and goofs sections before watching an episode to spot the same bloopers. The book has a rather curious habit of taking any line with "end" or "take it" or other such language and turning it into something sexual. This may be a result of watching too many episodes and trying to insert humor into a book that has more of a reference quality. My copy is well worn and I also use it to see which episodes I am missing when searching to buy videos. If you don't have this book- get it!!!

Book Description
This book shows how continuation-passing style is used as an intermediate representation to perform optimizations and program transformations. Continuations can be used to compile most programming languages. The method is illustrated in a compiler for the programming language Standard ML. Prior knowledge of ML, however, is not necessary, as the author carefully explains each concept as it arises. This is the first book to show how concepts from the theory of programming languages can be applied to the production of practical optimizing compilers for modern languages like ML. All the details of compiling are covered, including the interface to a runtime system and garbage collector.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly readable, given the subject matter........1999-06-19
This is a very nice little book, and I found it to be surprisingly readable. The book is nicely written. Standard ML is used to illustrate the technique of compiling a functional language using continuations as the primary intermediate representation. Lack of familiarity with ML is not particularly burdensome. I would like to have seen more discussion of other languages, though (Scheme?).
