Product Description

Judith Viorst. Poor Alexander! He woke up with gum in his hair; his mom forgot to put dessert in his lunch bag; there were lima beans for dinner, and kissing on TV even the cat refuses to sleep in his bed. Some days are just like that. Alexander's awful day is the perfect lead-off for this collection of funny, touching stories about the ups and downs of childhood from imaginary monsters to saying goodbye to a family pet. Judith Viorst's insightful and humorous stories are the perfect antidote to any child's "terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

Amazon.com

"I went to sleep with gum in my mouth and now there's gum in my hair and when I got out of bed this morning I tripped on the skateboard and by mistake I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running and I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day."

So begin the trials and tribulations of the irascible Alexander, who has been earning the sympathy of readers since 1972. People of all ages have terrible, horrible days, and Alexander offers us the cranky commiseration we crave as well as a reminder that things may not be all that bad. As Alexander's day progresses, he faces a barrage of bummers worthy of a country- western song: getting smushed in the middle seat of the car, a dessertless lunch sack, a cavity at the dentist's office, stripeless sneakers, witnessing kissing on television, and being forced to sleep in railroad-train pajamas. He resolves several times to move to Australia.

Judith Viorst flawlessly and humorously captures a child's testy temperament, rendering Alexander sympathetic rather than whiny. Our hero's gum-styled hair and peevish countenance are artfully depicted by Ray Cruz's illustrations. An ALA Notable Book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is a great antidote to bad days everywhere, sure to put a smile on even the crabbiest of faces. (Ages 5 to 9)

5 out of 5 stars Sarah and the Absolutely Awful, Messed up, Hideous, Pits of a Bad Day.......2007-10-18

So sure, as of this writing 142 people have plenty to say about this book.

But are they a teacher?
Did they just have a horrible, awful day where even the water in the sink flowed in the wrong direction?

I knew it was awful when the ants were in the breakfast box where we keep the morning food and none of the kids wanted to try ants for the protein. And I knew it was even worse when I had to stop singing "This Pretty Planet" to say if you do not stop knocking into your neighbor we are going to stop ROTATING when we sing 'spinning around' and the WHOLE REASON WE ARE DOING THIS IS TO ROTATE.

And I knew it was horrible when the DAD who was supposed to walk with us to the library DITCHED US and disappeared. "Watch the KIDS," I SAID....not, "Kids watch the DAD!"

And I knew it was even more horrible when five kids kicked each other and said ...no..."It's ON PURPOSE." And it was math time and we are not working on five even....

Yes it was a horrible day.Awful, awful, awful.(see slimy green algae growing gunk all over the walls of a fish tank and you got it...)
A teacher even YELLED at me in front of the class and though she is wrong, the sophistication to know that isn't in my group.. All they know is I deferred to a big bully.

And you know it's bad when you pull this fantastic book out to read it and they DON'T NOTICE you are Reading.

It's a very bad day in my hood. True no one was hit by a car today, like two weeks ago, but breaking down in tears in the library and in the room isn't "my style." And this book that tells of a child dealing with the pits of a bad day...still resonates with me. I had a "Master teacher" years ago call Viorst books "street" and still find this put down amusing. To her these kinds of feelings and behaviors should not be validated.Never written. "The end of civilization as we know it." Sure. It went a few years back....look up we don't even give HEALTH CARE to all our kids because a PRESIDENT HAS TO DRAW THE SPENDING LINE SOMEWHERE. (That's anger)
But coming to Oxnard I worked with a teacher, now retired, Barbara Bauman, and she had this (and The Pain and The Great One, Blume) and I happened in on her reading this to her 2nd graders. They loved it. She had a calm room and a fun place to be. And she reminded me by example how classic this book is.Yes, bad days happen and Presidents do foolish, foolish things.

I think if you have this book and have a son (especially) there will be a day when it is just the right book. Oh, and please read Sunday Morning. It's also remarkable.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless!.......2007-10-17

This was one of my son's favorites as a little boy ~~ but I bought this for my grandson!! Little boys never change!! :o)

5 out of 5 stars Great books.......2007-10-11

My sons, my husband, and I all loved this book. We still use the tag line (30 years later) as a way to say "my day was the pits, so don't even ask." Judith Viorst writes books based on her own family and life experiences for both children and adults. Alexander is, indeed, having an awful day. One thing after another just isn't working out for him, and he keeps saying that he thinks he'll go to Australia. Every kid has had at least one day like this (and so have the rest of us). In the end, his mother tries to console him with the truth we all have to learn - that "Some days are like that. Even in Australia."

5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2007-10-03

Great books for boys or girls. And for a bed time even better, when parents (who had a bad day themselves) have to read it. I love it.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching Attitude.......2007-09-24

Great little book that I use to tutor children to read - and at the same time teach about attitudes. They love it!

                    Book Description

The collected papers in this volume are all concerned either in a direct sense or in a more wider perspective with the work of Joseph A. Schumpeter. Looking at Schumpeter's work, his lasting influence on important areas of research can be identified. One of these areas is obviously Schumpeter's idea about the future capitalism, a second one the issue of innovation and its consequences for economic development. A third area is concerned with the political process and the role of political leadership. The collection of this volume is developed along these main lines, complemented by papers discussing the place of Schumpeter's work within the history of economic analysis.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining Factoids Without Conext or Sources.......2007-05-11

If you're looking for a fast read on the plane or waiting room, this collection of odd news stories is good for entertainment. It is a collection of anecdotes with no connection or context and is designed to be read in little bites. The stories are not well sourced, and one wonders if they are accurate. But most readers won't be that concerned with this.

                      4 out of 5 stars Rock 101.......2002-12-12

I own the 1996 edition, and recommend this book with some reservations. While I learned about a lot of bands I never would have heard of otherwise (draining my bank account as a result), there does seem to be a bias toward newer artists, particularly British (perhaps they could have included Wanda Jackson?). Also, there is a definite tendency toward artists who have yet to prove themselves in the long run (Alanis Morissette???) or artists of questionable merit (Meatloaf?). It is interesting to compare this book to the Trouser Press review guide, as their opinions are sometimes diametrically opposed to each other regarding specific albums.

                      1 out of 5 stars rather biased.......2001-12-28

The author's disdain for progressive rock negates the book's credibility as a resource for all music fans. One star.

                      1 out of 5 stars unsubstantiated.......2001-06-01

I don't know enough about the other bands presented to adequately judge the accuracy of the entire book, but if the entry on U2 is any indication, this book is entirely unsubstantiated. The author notes, for example, that U2 have "never inspired universal acclaim" and that the voices in favor of the band are "matched by the equally vocal contempt of a legion of detractors." Other than this author, I have never read any contempt. I have read occasionally unimpressed reviewers, responding to such albums as, say Rattle and Hum, or to the pretentions of the PopMart tour, but U2's grammy awards, sold out concert tours and extensive coverage in magazines (almost always praising the band's music) indicate that this author has an ax to grind. The very sentence "...in spite of their success, U2 have often found themselves out of step with the prevailing zeitgeist of pop" is ironic. Is being "in step" notable? Is that the condition which cues the contempt of the "legion of detractors" that the author never really names? At a recent series of U2 concerts, I spotted Elvis Costello, Bush, Gwen Stefani...are those the "fashionable" for which U2 are "anathema" according to the author? Maybe I'm simply offended...but it seems the author is presenting his own views in the shroud of real research. The opening word is even spelled incorrectly.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Choices, Not For Everybody.......2001-05-19

I love this book and I have spent a great amount of time dipping into it since it arrived in the mail. I'd already seen a fair bit of it online but the print version with irreverently captioned photographs and whatnot is certainly an improvement.

The editors have made some interesting choices, granting equal space to relatively unknown bands such as the X-Ray Specs as they did to The Eagles. This book is basically about bands "that mattered" and record sales don't really influence the amount of space granted to any individual act. The editors cheerfully admit that they didn't really get around to including the Moody Blues (I can't complain!) The perspective is pretty much what you'd appreciate and agree with if you are interested in Indie Rock and enjoy the Britisn NME rock magazine. I am, so I love it.

Furthermore, the book seems to be pitched to rock fans in their thirties: there is a wealth of entries on late 70s UK punk bands and their influences and American counterparts. If I were a few years younger, I don't know if I'd enjoy this book as much as I do.

The fact that a lot of it was collected from contributors to the Internet means that there is less of a geographical bias than might have been expected. There are several entries for 80s bands from New Zealand that would have made ripples in England (such as the Chills, the Clean, etc).

The book's only problems as far as I can see is that it's only one of a series of "Rough Guides". For example, there is no entry for Bob Marley, who presumably has been included in the companion volume on Reggae. They could have included some colour photographs, especially when dealing with album covers, but I suppose that'd jack up the price.

All in all a great, fun read if you're into that sort of thing and I'm sure I'll be dipping into it for a long time to come.

                      5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive.......2001-05-03

I've looked through lots of "rock history" books over the years. What makes this one different is that it was truly a joint venture by hundreds of different people and done mostly over the Internet. While most bios were done by fans, they still maintain objectivity. They aren't afraid to comment on a specific band's strengths and weaknesses and where a band did something great or not so great. They also give accurate bios of virtually every group that did or still does exist. Not only that, this book chronicles histories of hundreds and hundreds of bands, and not just the most popular ones, but also a lot of the more obscure bands around. While there are a few groups (mostly ones that are extremely obscure) not listed here, the books' editors took great pains to include as many essential bands as humanly possible. As for the ones missing, well there's always the next edition to include them in.

Indispensable for any serious rock music fan's library.

                      Book Description

At a time when the methods and purposes of intelligence agencies are under a great deal of scrutiny, author Wesley Britton offers an unprecedented look at their fictional counterparts. In Beyond Bond: Spies in Film and Fiction, Britton traces the history of espionage in literature, film, and other media, demonstrating how the spy stories of the 1840s began cementing our popular conceptions of what spies do and how they do it. Considering sources from Graham Greene to Ian Fleming, Alfred Hitchcock to Tom Clancy, Beyond Bond looks at the tales that have intrigued readers and viewers over the decades. Included here are the propaganda films of World War II, the James Bond phenomenon, anti-communist spies of the Cold War era, and military espionage in the eighties and nineties. No previous book has considered this subject with such breadth, and Britton intertwines reality and fantasy in ways that illuminate both. He reveals how most themes and devices in the genre were established in the first years of the twentieth century, and also how they have been used quite differently from decade to decade, depending on the political concerns of the time. And he delves into such aspects of the genre as gadgetry, technology, and sexuality-aspects that have changed with the times as much as the politics have. In all, Beyond Bond offers a timely and penetrating look at an intriguing world of fiction, one that sometimes, and in ever-fascinating ways, can seem all too real.

                      5 out of 5 stars Bond: Beyond Bond - Great Britton's Heroes.......2006-03-20

Just finished Wes Britton's Beyond Bond. What a fantastic compendium of spy-detective related knowledge! A veritable reference book of interconnected facts about the espionage genre and a great read. Included in the tome is a chronological outline of spy fiction through out the past 100 years. Anyone who thinks James Bond was the first; but wonders where he came from needs to read this book. The best part of the book for me was understanding how life imitates art and vice versa. The actual historical events of the times many times informs art and it's great to see how that happens in this book.

Recommended to anyone who wants a greater understanding of the espionage genre; while specific enough to pique anyone's interest enough to dig further. Enjoy.

Wesley Britton has written an original. In "Beyond Bond," he offers pithy insights on both fictional and real espionage, seamlessly blending discussions of movies, literature, and television. Britton has a fine spy eye, as he shows how few "degrees of separation" there are between fact and fiction. Lucid and intelligent, this is a must-read.

I get many spy books across my desk but Dr. Britton's is outstanding in the field and he has brought exhaustive research to a blend of the real and fictional. Fascinating reading!

Although the stated goal of this book is to help you choose the best DSL (digital subscriber line) service, DSL for Dummies does a nifty job of going beyond the basics and explaining all the technological issues you must consider before you venture into the world of high-speed Internet access.

DSL is a high-speed Internet service that runs over existing telephone lines. Unfortunately, getting it installed in your home is often a trying experience. David Angell addresses the problems typically associated with installing DSL service and provides helpful hints regarding what you should look for in a service provider.

Angell also deftly explains the equipment involved in obtaining DSL access, particularly the DSL modem, and gives a solid overview of the different types of modem available and the installation issues involved. (Although he mentions that notebook users can use PC Card network interface cards (NICs) for connection with a modem, he doesn't point out that USB, because it doesn't require additional equipment, is the better option.) He also does a good job of explaining DSL issues specific to Windows NT and Windows 2000, as well as how to share DSL access in homes or offices that have more than one computer.

If you're considering upgrading your plodding dial-up connection to DSL, you'd do well to consult DSL for Dummies before taking the plunge. --John Frederick Moore

DSL for Dummies was disappointing. It was pre-ownership material. I was hoping for tricks to help navigate DSL which had already been installed on my computer.

I believe this book is probably not much help nowadays since there are so many companies that sell DSL for installation by the customer (maybe with some tech help over the phone). The book was probably great four years ago.

                          2 out of 5 stars Shoddy effort.......2002-10-30

Although "DSL for Dummies" contains some useful information, one can't help but feel cheated by its extremely poor organization and inflated size.

The information in this book could have been presented clearly and concisely in about 40 well-written pages, but to make it a book the author and editors have resorted to simply repeating the same information over and over (not in an edifying way, but in a copy-and-paste kind of way). In fact, much of the book has nothing to do with DSL but instead constitutes a list of all the great things one can do with the Internet.

The most annoying part is that all of this has less to do with incompetence than a calculated desire to inflate the size (and price) of the book.

                          4 out of 5 stars Good Intro & How-To for beginner.......2001-10-01

Good for Intro & overall picture of the xDSL how-to in the Windows platform prospective-straight to the point. However, due to the on going development of the technology, some parts of the issues/infos are not longer valid...

4 out of 5 stars A review from "the other side".......2001-08-22

I am not shopping for a DSL connection, I bought this book for a completely different reason. I work for a supplier of DSL equipment (both network side and CPE) and I recently had to argue for our solutions to an ILEC (not in the U.S./Canada) with whom we were trying to do business. What we in the business calls "access networks" were new to me, so in addition to a quick technical overview I needed to know how ILECs/CLECs/ISPs position themselves with their services; I needed to know how they planned to make their money. (Also we ex-techies need to become bean-counters of sorts...) DSL for Dummies actually provided that. It also gave me an explanation of the most common buzzwords and abbreviations so I could hold my own when talking to the real DSL nerds. I would have liked to see more what's going on on the other side of the DSLAM (the datanetwork to the ISP), that would have added the fifth star.

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the naysayers. this book is great........2001-06-14

I think most of the reviewers who gave this book a low rating were annoyed because they already knew material covered in the book. Which is the absolute wrong reason to pan a book.

I wanted a backgrounder on DSL and info on the variety of ways one could hookup one or more PCs to DSL, and this book does a great job. It also offers good advice on what to look for when shopping around for DSL.

The only warning is that it PC-oriented, so if you're a Mac user it might not be as useful to you.

This book has restored my faith in the Dummies brand.
