Every Asterix rules, doesn't matter which one, it rules!
These things are hilarious, has anyone ever read the French version?

5 out of 5 stars Gauls Getafix.......2007-01-21

Asterix lives in the Gaulish part of the Roman Empire. Doesn't he? Not quite, his village resists the Romans thanks to a magic potion. The Romans want some of this potion for themselves...

"Asterix the Gaul" was the first Asterix comic, published in 1961. Rene Goscinny made the words and Albert Udzero did the pictures. It's a pretty good way to start the series though the sequel "Asterix and the Golden Sickle" (1962) sets up the vibe the other comics enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars The first Asterix comic.......2006-11-10

Wonderful. what more can I say. You got to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Asterix and Obelix.......2006-11-09

Thanks to the magic potion of the resident druid, Getafix, Asterix and Obelix triumphantly defend the borders of their village against Caesar's legions, to the legions' great dismay ("I hate those Gauls"). My personal favorite is "Asterix and Cleopatra" where they travel to Egypt to help Getafix's buddy Edifis win an architectural contest between Ceasar and Cleopatra. Oh, and the Sphinx's nose? Obelix did that.

In this graphic novel series there is great storytelling, superb drawing, awful puns, wonderful sound effects (yes, really), and sneakily, insidiously, while you're laughing, you're learning.

I grew up with Asterix as a French and I would advise you to read the first 3 albums so you can get to know the characters. After that you can dig in the collection without feeling lost. BUT DO READ THE FIRST 3 ALBUMS. Then you'll really learn to love Asterix and Obelix and you'll enjoy the Movies we made in France with Depardieu as Obelix especially Asterix and Cleopatra (Monica Belucci makes a sexy Cleopatra)

                Book Description

This book looks at very high inflations, exemplified by those suffered by Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Israel, Mexico, and Peru in the eighties and by the Soviet Union today. The authors argue that a better grasp of high inflation processes is necessary in order for countries intricated in it to design stabilization strategies. The extremes of monetary instability can also give a clearer picture of the purpose that money and financial institutions serve under more normal circumstances, thus deepening our understanding of the benefits of monetary stability. The authors examine the financial problems that governments have to wrestle with in high inflation, the private sector's adaptations to high inflation conditions, and the difficulties of finding a policy strategy that can be sustained through disinflation to lasting stabilization. In describing, analysing, and explaining a number of high inflationary experiences, the authors show that standard macroeconomic theory cannot account for the phenomenon of these extreme cases and ask how received inflation theory needs to be changed in order for it to accommodate the various effects on the functioning of the economy. Finally, the authors make a series of policy prescriptions which will help policy-makers to avoid inflationary situations.

5 out of 5 stars peek into the strange world of LOOMPANICS!.......2007-01-02

Loompanics (RIP) was the one-stop shop for books on criminal activity, dropout culture, and other fun weirdness until they recently closed their doors. I've read over a dozen Loompanics titles and this book is still my favorite. It's a compilation of articles and artwork; reflections on society and hints and tips from individualist, rebellious, and sometimes misanthropic perspectives. The articles from 60's underground newspapers are neato and the collage art on the front and back cover is very nice.

                    Long Live Loompanics!

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2006-02-12

First and best of the Loompanics compilations. Some of the articles are reprints from obscure publicartions like "The Libertarian Connection" from the late 60's. Some of it is still relevant today, the article "Apocalypse Soon?" for instance. which is about devout Christians in high places who are seemingly trying to bring about apocalypse in Israel to create the conditions for a supposed second coming of Jesus Christ. There is a bit of irrational paranoia, e.g. someone predicts goblal economic collapse by 1982 and someone else, writing in 1985, declares that America is losing the Cold War because Americans don't have a sense of national identity. A wide variety of opinions are expressed, all of which are interesting.

I rate highly the other Loompanics compendiums also.

                            Book Description

After decades of distorted stereotyping by the media, Canada's First Peoples began to take control of their own image by creating a broadcast industry to transmit their own representations and perspectives. Something New in the Air charts the development of indigenous television broadcasting within the wider context of Canadian contemporary, multicultural society from the 1960s to the present.

Lorna Roth focuses on the regional, national, and global implications of Television Northern Canada and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), the only dedicated aboriginal television service in the world and available to every household in Canada with cable and satellite. She shows that by making their programming an integral part of the Canadian broadcasting infrastructure, First Peoples have succeeded in mediating their own historically ruptured pasts and creating a provocative model for media resistance. Concentrating on policy development, Roth explains how First Peoples in Canada have refashioned television broadcasting, indigenizing and transforming it into a tool for inter-community and national development. Something New in the Air valorizes the struggle of First Peoples to attain legislated recognition of their collective communications and cultural rights and shows how this struggle explains, in part, why they are now acknowledged as having the most advanced aboriginal broadcasting network in the world.

Stross, an academic business historian, was given unlimited access to interview Microsoft employees and managers and to rifle through most of Microsoft's corporate records. His main conclusion? That Microsoft's phenomenal success is due in large part to its consistent insistence on hiring the smartest people, and that much Microsoft bashing is reflective of an anti-intellectual strain in American culture. Whether you idolize or despise Microsoft, this book is well worth reading--especially if you are in any way responsible for hiring the best and the brightest for your company.

It has been a long time since I have some across a book as bad as this one. Not only is the author a kind of apologist for Bill Gates, blithely dismissing Microsoft critics as jealous of a superior being and accusing the FTC of ignorance, but the content is decidedly third rate. First, as a dated piece of work, the author goes over a list of controversies that should interest no one anymore, such as the first proposed information superhighway subscriber schemes. He also goes on and on about Myrvold as a prescient genius nerd, though Gates fired soon after the book was published for incompetence. Second, what the author attempts to cover about how MS works is unbelievably banal, such as hiring the smartest people (instead of those with experience and credentials) or the way that offices are configured. As such, the book was of absolutely no use for question os how MS really does things. Moreover, the edition I got was sloppily printed: a page is missing, there are whole sections in which no periods appear and the like. Finally, the style is boring and hard to follow.

Not recommended. There are far better books on MS available.

2 out of 5 stars Justifying Bill Gates.......2005-07-11

This Book's focus seemed to be more about justifying Bill Gates' actions, and defending Microsoft against negative PR than the actual history of Microsoft. A more fact-filled, play-by-play history of the rise of Microsoft would have been more interesting, I think.

                            4 out of 5 stars Instructive book.......2003-03-11

Stross' book goes beyond explaining the ways of Microsoft to man, but explains what it takes to stay up-to-date. As is oft said, the leader of one revolution can not be the leader of another. Because Stross have had a total archival access that's why the reasons why Microsoft company is in the high stakes high technology business are very clear.
Tongue and cheek aside, this book is a real way of thinking in a company. Bill Gates is not the ruthless taskmaster that some people try to denonciate.

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into Microsoft's early days........2002-10-19

I purchased this book when it was first published, but went back and reread it recently. The book is broken down into four sections, the first being my favorite. As an entrepreneur I find the initial organization, growth, and recruiting patterns at Microsoft to be extremely valuable. I think that any company can learn from this section, especially companies with investments in intellectual capital.

The rest of the book is pretty good, but not as valuable as the first section was to me. It did have interesting discussions about Microsoft's early entry into the Personal Finance market going head to head against Intuit. This should have helped dispel many of the anti-trust issues as it shows that Microsoft is not alone in aggressively marketing their products.

5 out of 5 stars Balanced and well-researched.......2002-02-09

I found this to be a very well-researched book. Stross provides details for all his points and conclusions. This is not a book by someone can can see no good in MSFT, nor by someone who can see no bad in MSFT.

An excellent book if one wants to understand what makes a great software firm.
