I am quite satisfied with this purchase of a second-hand copy of the World Atlas. It is in very good shape and gives me exactly the information I was seeking.
Due to the heaviness of the book and the large size, the back binding was coming lose as I received it in the mail. I doubt that that is a fault of the previous owner of the book, but of the quality of the binding for such a large, awkward size book.

We bought this atlas as a birthday gift for my husband's mother. She loves it and has thanked us for it several times. She likes to reference this book while she is watching television shows on the history channel.

A Great General Purpose Atlas.......2007-03-22

I compared this atlas to it's closest rival, the National Geographic Atlas and chose this one because it is smaller and lighter. The NG Atlas is just too heavy to hold on your lap or get off a bookshelf. Also, I can't explain why, but I have never liked the format of NG maps.
The Oxford Atlas has more pages of maps, but since the NG Atlas is larger the level of detail is comparable.

King seeks to understand how the transition from state-socialism to capitalism was accomplished in Eastern Europe. The purpose of studying the process of transition is uo understand the end-point of the transition; that is, the structure of the postcommunist economy results from the different ways that private property was "made" by enterprise level actors. King identifies "strategies of transition" employed by postcommunist economic elites to transform property and acquire various property rights discusses, the conditions under which different strategies are likely to be selected, lists and, the resources used by actors to implement these strategies. As King illustrates through his case studies, when aggregated, these strategies are primarily responsible for the structuring of the postcommunist capitalist systems. This is done through the creation of different types of property (such as multinationals or management buy-outs) and integrating mechanisms (such as markets or state redistribution). The resulting property forms and integrative mechanisms that emerge from this process are assessed for their possible effect on economic performance and long-term development. Differences that exist among the various postcommunist economies are explained by the institutional legacies from the reform period of communism. This book is of particular interest to scholars, students, and researchers involved with East European studies, political and economic sociology, and international political economy.

Jane Lahr divides this book into three treatments of the subject: Song, Sword and Star. The naturalist in you will appreciate the Celts' deep reverence for nature in SONG. "The rebirths of the land as well as the heart are celebrated..." SWORD "...reflects the passage of into mid-summer... [the] journey towards maturity." In STAR the author shares pieces from Druidic philosophy and wisdom and the "beliefs in reincarnation, shape-shifting and shamanic practices."

This is a delightful book for both children and adults (older children) to learn more about our Celtic heritage. This book puts at your fingertips such authors and poets as William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, William Blake, Sir Walter Scott, Dylan Thomas, Margaret Tait, Robert Burns, Ella Young, and dozens more.

I liked this book because it sparks the imagination and touches the heart. Even if you have no Celtic blood in you, but a literary mind, you will find this book a treasure. I liked it so much I bought a copy for both my adult children for their birthdays this month.
