The thinking's not fuzzy in these board books, but the animals certainly are. Sandra Boynton's familiar furry creatures introduce simple concepts in this bright collection of four books, replete with clever line drawings. In Horns and Toes and In Between, three horned monsters teach the parts of the body in rhyme: "...and we have a fuzzy TUMMY that we all like to pat / and a little BELLY BUTTON in the middle of that." The Going to Bed Book gets a Noah's Ark of animals organized for bed: "They hang their towels on the wall / and find pajamas, big and small." Opposites is just that: cute animals "high and low / fast and slow / heavy and light / day and night." The Going to Bed book is my son's favorite of all time and all of the books' clever sing-song rhymes make even adult readers smile- like when they all go up to exercise after they've bathed and brushed their teeth.

Pick and Choose your Boyntons.......2007-09-03

Sadly, not only our toddler (18 mos) but we parents, as readers, were disappointed in this Boynton collection, Although the title of "Greatest Hits" implied that these books were among children's favorites. We have found this not to be true. While reading the books aloud they do not have the lyrical magic of other Boynton's like "Hippos Go Berserk," "Snuggle Puppy," "Barnyard Dance, " or "Moo, Baa, La La La!." Sandra Boynton has the gift of creating language and drawings that touch children's imaginations. These books aren't the best examples of that talent. Buy Boynton, but buy other books instead of her Greatest Hits, Vol. II.

I purchased this set for my 10 month old daughter. They are sturdy board books, beautifully illustrated with fun, rhythmic text. The hippo book is our absolute favorite. Highly recommended!!

Cute, but not my favorite of Boynton's books.......2007-10-18

Maybe this book will grow on me over time as I read it to my son, but so many of the Boynton books have a joyful tone to them. This one didn't seem as catchy or fun as some of her other ones. My son is 21 months old, so he is mostly entertained my my reading to him and looking at the pictures anyway. But this one doesn't catch his interest as much as "The Belly Button Book" and many of the others that are just plain fun to read.

This is one of the first books I purchased for my niece, who will be 2 next month. This book has brought such joy! Paige associates me with this book, and she brings it to me to read at every visit. We read this book hundreds of times in the rocker when she was an infant. The sing-song rhyme was comforting, and she knows my special way of reading this to her. Now the fun part is listening to her say hippopotamus! (pee oh paw a muss :) Her copy is so beat up, but we wouldn't have it any other way! It is well worn like a favorite blanket, and has given me many wonderful evenings with Paige!

This is an awesome book. It is entertaining and celebrates others differences while reconfirming your own individuality. All four of my children love this book (ages 11-1) The illustrations are amazing...the pictures are enough to keep my 1 year old interested. A must buy!!! Another great book to get by the same illustrator is Giraffe's Can't Dance.

We found this book in the bookstore, and my husband read it to our 2 1/2 year old who was totally enthralled by it. I have since read it myself and have just ordered it from amazon.com. It's a charming book, very well written and beautifully illustrated. The story is about a young hippo who is tired of being a hippo and wants to be something else. So he goes off and tries to be a variety of animals till he realizes that he really rather likes being a hippo after all. The story is quite funny as Portly the hippo has quite a few mishaps trying to be a rhino, a bat, a giraffe etc. I highly recommend this book to any parent who has a toddler. You both are sure to love it!!

The book is a good read and highly recommended, but there is room to update us on technology's impact on culture and society in China today.

Why did the development of capitalism and technology fail in China? Does it matter? Has the West trumped the deck in favour of itself through selective interpretation of events? China and Historical Capitalism tells us it is more important to look beyond finding reasons in order to find out what actually happened in China after the fork in the road of economic development.

The essays are reflections of current thinking on the 'post-Needham' project by well established scholars using, if I can stretch the terminology, post-marxist analytical tools and language. Joseph Needham, and his lifetime work on Science and Civilisation in China, is, of course, the backdrop for the essays. The chronology of the essays begins with the development of European capitalism and is completed with the identification of a market economy in pre-modern China.

My favorite essay is that of Francesca Bray, "Towards a critical history of non-Western technology." Perhaps it is because I read her book, The Rice Economies of Asia (University of California Press, 1986). But it is also because she is probably one of the more qualified persons to bridge Needham's work with post-Needham work given that she produced Volume VI of Needham's series. Parts of her essay deal with basic definitions of technology, economy and capitalism. In essence it provides clear guideposts to reinterpret Needham's work by showing the development of technology beyond the cut-off period that signals the rise of the West. The following chapter, by R. Bin Wong, goes on to narrate the development of China's market economy, where Europe's economic development is the usual topic of study.

Having experienced the development of the internet over the last half decade, one can't help but look back at the exercises in this book as also partly misguided. The authors state at the beginning that they do not address current economic development in Asia, but instead focus on how capitalism "has been conceived as a European social formation" and how capitalism, "as a world system has shaped knowledge of China." Yet, so often, the assumptions that underlie their uses of terms such as 'capitalism' result in freezing time to suit their needs and to leave the West in a category of cultural and social development that built the world outside into an image of what it wanted to see. They do not to see capitalism and technology as systems that can develop beyond their experience to date. Neither do they consider current (or even recent) interaction between technological development and society in China. Certainly, it is another large topic. But a peak at the issues would help.

Ultimately, the reality they build comes with its own set of distortions. Perhaps its the nature of the beast, but it would be nice to leave the door open and say: "Hey, Needham, Weber and all the social scientists and thinkers pre-Foucault or Pre-Habermas, etc. just had a different set of problems than we have today. ... But we recognize that we are also missing part of the picture. ... and here is where we need to focus next."

Need a bit of light reading on the john? Look no further! This book has great pics, with a story to go with each one. Very lighthearted humor, nothing that your kids cannot see. I picked up my copy at a local auction, and love it!

Great Reference For Logic Users.......2007-07-05

'Logic Pro Tips and Tricks' by Stephen Bennett is a great book to keep by the side of all Logic users. Logic is a confusing application that can befuddle even the most skill Mac users, so having this great reference full of tips and tricks handy is a welcome addition to the library. My only gripe would be the lack of color and having to deal with the grey pictures throughout, but this is a minor annoyance. The audience that would be looking to pick up this book is more concerned with content than layout so it's a trivial gripe in the whole scheme of things.

If you are a Macaddict that uses Logic, you owe it to yourself to pick up this book today and improvement your skillset immensely!!

This little book is well worth the buy. It shows you the needed information fast. If you are searching for answers, this is the one you need. I am brand new to Logic and this book is extremely helpful in giving some practical approaches and suggested settings to start with for mixing and mastering CDs. There are only a few places in the book that offer tips that aren't broken down step by step for beginners to follow but generally it does give you the paths to find what you're looking for. It's a bargain and I highly recommend it.

Excellent, Concise Compendium of Logic Tips..........2006-03-13

I hesitated in purchasing this book as I have been burned in the past by books claiming to offer "hints", "tips", or other sundry "pointers". This book, while not really geared for the beginner (e.g., the author assumes a lot about the reader's knowledge of Logic Pro, and doesn't tell the reader how to do things step by step), is an EXCELLENT, succinctly written, DENSE assortment of REAL tricks for intermediate to advanced users of Logic. I've read it twice, and although I am an advanced user of Logic, I found something new in each read that has improved my workflow.

Again, it should be apparent that this is NOT a "tutorial" book. One is referred to the excellent Martin Sitter Apple Training Series book for that; however, once one is "into" Logic, this should be on every user's bookshelf, and the price is right as well.

The book opens with VERY USEFUL recommendations on system optimization AND maintenance that I have not seen in any other book on DAW's. From there the book gives tips on recording, arranging, Logic plug-ins, mixing, and mastering that just can't be found elsewhere, except maybe in a magazine like the UK's Computer Music or MusicTech...

Stephen Bennett has provided us Logic users with a virtual goldmine of GREAT tips for the intermediate to advanced user. I think EVERY Logic user should have this book, and should read it often. Your work with Logic will be immensely more pleasureable---thanks to Mr. Bennett.
