The Worst Book I've Did Not Read.......2007-09-15
I bought a few books on home construction. This one is the absolute worst in my opinion. The one I like because it is full of information for a novice is Robert Irwin's "Tips & Traps When Building Your Home". As for this "Dream..." is not a nightmare either, just a few dollars waisted. I did not find any usefull information and after a while I just dumped it in the garbage.
Build Dream Home for Less.......2007-07-05
While this book has some useful tips for dealing with subcontractors, the book is outdated. There are other books available that will be of better value.
Thorough but not overwhelmingly detailed - just right.......2007-04-02
We are planning to general contract our own home, and I found this book to be a good resource. I'm a woman and have generally left "trade" stuff to my husband, but as he is working FT and I'm not, I'll be largely managing the project and I wanted to do a lot of homework. Woodson seems very knowledgeable and shares the information in an easy to follow format. He also explains many trade terms (certain types of joints, wiring etc.) that other books assume you already know - nice for us non-handy folks. One thing that this book could use is an update to include newer construction items such as insulated concrete forms, geo-thermal energy systems, and radiant floor heating. Also beware that Woodson, like all the other authors I've read on this subject, has his opinions on certain things (like you don't need air conditioning in Maine - it doesn't get hot often, but boy does it get humid and AC is really helpful). Take the opinions with a big grain of salt and read other books/articles to cross check things that you aren't sure about...however this book was a good foundation. Would recommend.
Build Your Dream Home for Less .......2006-11-10
The book is very good it provided me with the information that I needed and even more.
BUILDING MY DREAM HOME.......2006-11-10
I DID FIND THE BOOK TO BE HELPFUL AND IT GOT ME STARTED IN CONSTRUCTING MY OWN HOUSE. I DID FIND ANOTHER BOOK CALLED "EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO ABOUT BUILDING THE CUSTOM HOME, HOW TO BE YOUR OWN CONTRACTOR" BY JOHN FOLDS AND ROY HOOPES THE PUBLISHER IS TAYLOR PUBLISHING CO. THAT BOOK
WAS A GREAT COMPANINON TO THIS BOOK. BOTH TOGETHER WAS VERY HELPFUL.
WHAT REALLY COULD HELP HOMEOWNERS BEST IS HOW TO COST ESTIMATE AND A PROCESS FOR GETTING AND COMPARING BIDS FOR EACH DISCIPLINE, AND A WAY TO RECORD IT EASILY.
Book Description
Through brilliant portraits of real persons who created the myths and realities of the 1930s, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Murray Kempton brings that turbulent decade to life. Himself a child of the time, Kempton examines with the insight and imagination of a novelist the men and women who embraced, grappled with, and in many cases were destroyed by the myth of revolution. What he calls the "ruins and monuments of the Thirties" include Paul Robeson, Alger Hiss, and Whittaker Chambers, the Hollywood Ten, the rebel women Elizabeth Bentley and Mary Heaton Vorse, and the labor leaders Walter Reuther and Joe Curran.

Essential reading to understanding Communism in the U.S........2004-02-21
Picked this one up through reference in a biography dictionary on Communism in the United States. Glad I did. This is a hidden gem.
Mr. Kempton does not approach the issue from a philosophical or principle orinted point of view. He doesn't discuss Communism and its ideals or compare and contrast various belief systems. He approaches it from a personal standpoint. He takes several peripheral characters, for the most part, and unfolds their lives. Apparently, he himself was involved in ascending into the Communist camp for a time.
Rather than deal with the major players, he deals with minor players (minor, to me anyhow, as I'd never heard of many of them). This is what makes it interesting. By delving into the lives of these characters, he puts the times into a greater context by which we come to understand the appeal of Communism and its part in the broader scope of the 1920s and 1930s.
Labor unrest, the Communist thread, the radicalism during this period and the economic devastation is something we seem to be one step removed from these days and the impact this period of time had on people is often lost. It's amazing how much what is said in this book rings true today. Truly history repeats itself.
Not only do we begin to understand the times but we begin to see how diverse and different those who decided to take up its banner really were and how Communism was not necessarily the direct appeal but it was a means to an end, a reaction rather than proaction.
He is sympathetic towards his characters and you feel the pathos as you read about their lives. They become very human and very real, something often lacking in history books. There is a tinge of sadness surrounding all the individuals in the book. His writing style is quite fresh and dramatic with a flair for the metaphor.
If you wish to understand what was going on during this period of time and what the appeal of Communism was and why these individuals jumped on the bandwagon, this book is a must read.

Pearl to make her debut. Pearl's Guide to Maturity: How to Make Your Silver Years Truly Golden is a must-read for women who have earned the right to do and say what they want when they want. Examples of Pearl's words of wisdom include:
"Don't be fooled by low-fat diets. The real reason they're called low-fat diets is because the nanosecond you go off these diets, the low parts of your body will receive all the fat you thought you lost."
"Find new ways to communicate with your husband. Using words like 'cheeseburger,' 'hammer,' or 'nail gun' to get his attention can bring about an alertness that is not unlike what you see at the Westminster Dog Show. Though he won't be as well-groomed."
Nearly one million Pearl greeting cards are distributed through Recycled Paper Greetings, the third largest independent greeting card publisher in the world.
Book Description
This first book in the new Pro Method series covers the pivotal styles and techniques of the swing and bebop era. The method not only provides students with a solid foundation in scales, modes, chord forms, arpeggios and other basics, but it also focuses on applying these concepts in the context of classic jazz chord progressions and standards.
Customer Reviews:
Challanging but fun.......2007-08-11
Good book. The CD supplied with it gives a good sense of the needed feel and rhythms. Without it, I would be doing a halfed arsed version of each example and only partially learning. It is very challanging stuff for me, but I have already found that I am able transfer a lot of the skills to other genres of music. I bought this book to increase my fretboard dexterity, and it certainly works. It also covers every aspect of music (in a Jazz sense), rhythm, lead, chord scale relationships, modal theory etc. Not only is this an interestng Jazz book, I find it is a good all round musical learning experience.
Great book for intermediate/ advanced-intermediate players.......2007-05-10
This is the first method book I've ever been happy with, and I've bought quite a few guitar books over the years. It assumes you already know your way around the fretboard but aren't a virtuoso. The passages are often challenging, but always attainable after a few days practice. The examples are often interesting (but not always, i.m.h.o.), and the sample solos given at the end of each section are wonderful. I've been skipping the scale exercises, as they're pretty bland (get Barry Galbraith's book #2 from Jamey Aebersold's series if you want to practice scales instead). Doug Munro's comments are easy to understand and written in a nice casual style, and the accompanying CD is excellent. Highly recommended!
Not a jazz method book. Too advanced for most........2006-12-08
Doug Munro is a veteran jazz performer and knows the complexities of jazz harmony, I just wish he would elaborate more, since this is labeled a jazz "method" book. The advancing jazz guitar player will find some challenging material here, as Munro's assumes the reader to be of his caliber. What the reader may find perplexing is that the majority of riffs are presented as 4 bar phrases (or more) over a single chord, when in reality, most standards have a different chord every bar, not a single chord for several measures.
Buying this book is not a complete waste, as you may find a sparse smattering of simple dominant 7, minor 7, and altered riffs that you could potentially utilize. Unfortunately, what this book is seriously lacking is a theoretical breakdown and analysis of the riffs themselves. Complete explanations are needed if this book is to be used without a private jazz guitar instructor and only as a stand alone resource.
This book has a preponderance of wasted whitespace. Chord and scale diagrams are non-existant. Riffs are combined on the CD tracks which makes accessing a single riff a pain. Terminology is confusing as hip slang terms are often used and arcane references are never explained in an reference section. There are typos such as on page 110, bar 4, where the TAB doesn't match the standard notation and should have been caught in the editorial process.
As such, this isn't a method book as it claims, it's a vanity project. It does a great job of showing off some of Doug's favorite riffs and he's obviosly collected a lot of jazz riffs over the years. And the CD is helpful, especially for ear training, as your ears become tuned into advanced jazz harmony. So overall I liked the audio examples, but it's not a book I'll keep in the instruction book library for long because if you look past the fancy riffs there's really nothing useful here.
A bit dissapointed..........2006-10-09
To start, this book isn't really a jazz method book, but rather a very well illustrated book on jazz keys (Imaj7, IIm7, VIIb5, ect.). Guitar method books are supposed to be designed to teach and usually go very in depth about each of the topics. This book however, only show the various key that make jazz music distinctive from other types of music. It does a great job of explaining the music theory behind jazz, but does little to help teach technical aspects of playing jazz (i.e. left hand fingerings, tempo, etc.) After you get over the fact that this book won't teach you a lot about jazz, it does have some cool solo pieces. The music CD included is decent as well, my only gripe is what is being played isn't exactly the same as the music is written in the book. Overall, if you're an intermediate player looking to understand jazz music theory a little better, this is a great buy. If you wanting to actually learn to play jazz you should look at buying a good method book rather than this one.
Breakthrough in Jazz instruction Books.......2001-05-03
I have been working through several jazz guitar instruction books over a number of years, even with one dating back to the 1950's by Mel Bay. Well I can honestly say that the hype surrounding this book is for once well justified. It truly is a modern and professional approach to jazz guitar instruction and is made all the more effective with the attached CD which opens up the student to a whole new dimension in music instruction. The book is very detailed in the presentation of scales, arpeggios, chords, and solos as well as the theory behind music in general and jazz music in particular. I have made great leaps in my learning because of this book. The title of the book may be slightly misleading as many of the jazz guitar styles and examples Munro draws upon come from outside of the Swing to Bebop period. One annoying drawback to the book, and it seems to be an affliction of just about every other guitar instruction book I have worked through, is the "hip" language used by Munro, which throws him back to the era of Mel Bay. Still, if you can manage to put his sometimes stilted lingo aside, as I easily did,it is a brilliant book and I eagerly await the second volume.

Book Description
In this ground-breaking book, Zapalac brings together the methods of social, intellectual, and art history in showing how the Protestant Reformation altered the terms of political discourse in a German free imperial city. In Zapalac's view, visual and verbal images, many of them having their origins in conceptions of the sacred, were more central to sixteenth-century political thought within the city walls than was the rationalized language of law. Drawing on a wealth of sources, she traces the impact of religious change on the languages of judgment and authority used in the city of Regensburg, and thereby sheds light on the nature of political thought in early modern Germany.

You just love it even more!.......2007-08-24
I couldn't wait to get my package of amazon.com to get this book! I'm such a huge fan of the series and then you just have to have this book on your book shelf... It's full of funny interviews, beautiful pictures and a little something about every episode. This book is so fabulous, I bought it for my girlfriend's birthdays and they all loved it as well...
Great book!.......2007-07-23
There is so much information and pictures! A great book if you are a fan. Details upon details...
SATC...as tasty as a cosmopolitan.......2007-05-23
This little bedside campanion of a book for the sinfully delicious TV show Sex and the City is perfect for any fan that is just beginning their voyage into the sexually inclined New York of the fab four. I found this book to be rather interesting and I loved that it laid out the entire show for the viewer. It gives a quick synopsis for each episode and lots of tid-bits along the way, ranging from a list who each girl did (and didn't do) and good information on all the main guys that were on the show. For anyone who has given up chocolate as an addiction and turned to Sex and the City to fulfill any emotional holes, this is the book for them.
Where was it updated???.......2007-05-07
If you already have the first editon then save your money. There is very little to call updates in this book. I can't understand why the last few episodes were only breezed over. To me these should have been the best of the book, but they were all but not there. The first edition is the one to get. Much better pictures for the money and just about all the same information.
Don't Bother Nothing New and lots of innaccuracies.......2007-04-15
As someone who loves ANYTHING SITC could not wait to get, wow what a disappointment. This book was abviously written without alot of insight on the show...perhaps someone that saw every other episode while vacuming or washing dishes! Don't waste your time any fan of this great show will see all right through this author's interpertation of the characters....Save your money for the movie.

finally got it.......2007-05-20
I have been wanting this book for a long time and finally got it...yes!! Fun book for fans like me.
Big SIS Fan.......2007-03-09
I have enjoyed the book a great deal. The only thing that surprised me was that the book was published about mid-way through the series, so it doesn't have any detail about the later episodes. Fun to look at anyway.
Seems to be a great gift.......2007-01-16
I don't know this show much, but my girlfriend is a huge fan so I got her a copy of this book. I wish more of my gifts would result in the kind of reaction this got from her. She keeps going back to it leafing through with great interest. If you're in search of a gift for a Sex and the City fan, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
If you love the show.......2006-03-09
You should pick this up. I bought this item for my wife who is a big fan and she loves it especially the part where they have a map of the city and list all the spots they have filmed.
Must have for true Sex and the City fans.......2006-02-23
I bought this book as a gift for a friend who loves Sex and the City and I was very pleased with it myself. I have been watching the seasons, and although I have not seen the series in its entirety, I found this book to be really cool. It has behind the scenes looks and it explores the wardrobes of all the cast members. My friend who I bought it for really liked it and I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves Sex and the City.
Book Description
Learn to build applications with Jakarta Struts, the most popular JSP development framework. Struts Kick Start is a "hands-on" book filled with sample applications and code snippets you can reuse, and in-depth coverage of new features in Struts 1.1. If you are looking for a practical book that "shows you how to do it", then Struts Kick Start is for you. Plus, it's the first Struts book with detailed examples of the major Struts tags.
The book begins with a discussion of Struts and its Model-View-Controller (MVC) architecture. The authors' then demonstrate Struts' power through the development of a non-trivial sample application - covering all the Struts components in a "how to use them" approach. You'll also see the Struts Tag Library in action - use tags for HTML, javabeans, logical operations and more. You'll learn to use Struts with JBoss for EJB's, with Apache Axis to publish and use Web Services, and with JUnit for testing and debugging. The authors work with the latest Struts 1.1 features including DynaForms, Tiles and the Validator.
The book includes a CD-ROM containing the tools discussed in the book: Struts 1.1 beta 2, Java 2 Standard Edition, JBoss 3.0.3, MySQL 3.23, XDoclet, Torque, Tomcat, Ant, Axis, Cactus, and JUnit. Plus, it comes with an electronic, fully searchable version of the book.
From the Inside Cover:
"Struts Kick Start is a good resource for learning about Struts, and it willhelp you get up to speed quickly."
- Craig McClanahan, Creator of Struts
Thoroughly covers the essential features of Struts in a clear and readable style.
Struts Kick Start is a solid starting point for learning how to develop webapplications using Struts. The authors start you off by reviewing thefoundational technologies on which Struts is based, and immediately get into thesorts of practical "how to" information and examples that get you up to speedquickly.
Notable features that I really appreciated include the coverage on integrationwith other technologies (such as EJBs and web services), using Ant to set upyour development environment, and the fact that the software goodies you needare available on the included CD. Struts does not live in a vacuum—it is one ofthe tools in the developer's toolkit, so knowing how it works with othertechnologies is very useful.
Of particular importance is the coverage on testing your web application as youbuild and maintain it. Developing a solid testing methodology, and a substantialsuite of tests (to protect yourself against regressions), is criticallyimportant to a rapid development cycle that still needs to produce high qualityapplications. Coverage of testing, though, tends to be minimal in many booksabout programming technologies. James and Kevin provide specific advice on howto use the JUnit and Cactus testing frameworks with your Struts based applications.
Customer Reviews:
Not the best Struts book.......2006-05-04
I needed a book on struts as I was beginning a new position. With limited time, I had to rely on the local book store. Not a good idea since this book was the only available book. I should have ordered online and waited.
The lack of detail is truly amazing. Use this tool, but don't describe the steps needed to compile the java created by the tool. Use this tool to create the JSP, but what if you don't have that tool and are limited to the tools you can use?
Since the tool generated code is required before compiling the included source code - that is a glaring omission. While the use of ant may be expected of many java programmers - setting up ant to complete the examples is not, especially given the complexity of the resulting xml file.
Disappointed would be a polite way of describing my reaction
Disorganized junk.......2005-11-08
Completely useless as a reference book. Very disorganized. OK as a basic introduction - then you can basically throw it away - or sell for 92c which is the going price for a used copy and it's no wonder.
Don't buy this one.......2005-10-09
I've been needing to learn Struts for a project at work and picked this up at the local used bookstore after thumbing through it. I took it home and started working through the demo application in Chapter 3, Hello World.
Of course they don't give you any information on how to install it or set it up for Tomcat. There's a companion CDROM that has all the source on it, but it is also poorly documented. I can't figure it out.
I went to the web site for the book and it's horribly out of date. There's a link to a new version of the HelloWorld application, but the link now points to a squatter's domain.
I'm sorry I spent any money on this book, but I guess I should be glad that I didn't pay full price for a brand new copy.
Book based on a real-life example - but needs complete rework and many new chapters !.......2005-07-04
Problems started from chapter 6, beginning was simple, easy, as beginning of any other JSP book. Author decided to make a nice example of struts application, the "stock tracker" application. I was so happy to see a good example, since other books lack complex examples. This example was realistic every-day type of applications we see on the web (banking or paying bills, rental). It also deals with retrieving XML data from the disk, and I find this also an often case in the real world applications. So the example had all chances to be good, and therefore book seemed to be oriented to people who really want to do some progress in JSP (and struts) development and to do some serious applications, not hello world in 21 ways ("hello from jsp", "hello from DB", "hello from servlet", "hello from preprocessor", "hello form plug-in"). So his example was promising to provide some logic, state machines, db access and synchronization, that "hello in 21 ways" approach lacks.
Also some use cases were mentioned and at that moment the book had all chances to be really serious one. Real life example, use cases, db, xml, regular expressions. In only he touched xalan and xerces it would be state of art idea for the book. Wow!
However, all fails down, since author just mentions these technologies, but never goes down to the details, possible problems, drawbacks and finally leaving you on your own to learn them.
Use cases without UML diagrams. He does not mention any other UML diagram. If the decided to go into use cases, the he should have done it as it is done in real life, use a tool to draw them and go thru activity diagram, state diagram, class diagrams, component and deployment diagram, etc. I got impression like he tells a reader: "Hey, there is something called Use cases, learn them alone".
Again, he needed a db backend, he used MySQL and provides SQL schema which is good enough to copy paste to my SQL command editor and to get tables ready. To access db from servlets he used Torque tool to generate java source code for accessing/updating records for tables he designed. But again same mistake follows - doesn't go any further than saying "It's worth taking a moment to see how Torque works" - and that's all he says about Torque! Ant is needed to run Torque. No even a sentence about how to launch Ant on Torque to generate java code for your own tables of your own application, which I believe, it is to expect from a reader to do. Well, perhaps he thought you will use provided java source on the CD and not build your own code. But what if a reader wants to do his table?
So now I got nothing out of that nice example. After several days trying to rearrange sources and put them into a project for JBuilder, WebSphere, Eclipse, somehow I got that code compiling and working, and then run into various problems regarding exceptions about locating property files, unable to connect Torque classes to MySQL, etc. I think that author should have provided several project files for several tools to help a reader to launch and start any of the provided examples, or at least, to provide Ant build files for some free application server.
Finally, the general problem in the book is that author does not go into the depths of any technology that he uses, leaving a reader in troubleshooting alone. He has no serious attitude nor is willing to take a reader by hand and show him/here nuts and bolts, problems and highlights of Struts. Everything is kept on an introduction and shallow level. Book was meant to impress with its example, which is left in "wireframes", unknown UML term for me. My favourite sentence from the book: "The Action can be very simple or very complicated."
I give 2 stars because I liked the example. For someone of my experience (6 years in java) I would recommend some cookbook rather than this one, my greetings goes to Struts books: Struts Survival Guide, Struts in Action, Professional Jakarta Struts, in exact order. There are nice tutorials by Borland and IBM about struts and JSPs.
Pure rubbish.......2005-04-28
When I am writing this review, the price of a used copy starts from 56 cents. You can imagine what quality you can expect from a book whose owner is so eagerly willing to part with it.
I did read this book and here is what I have to say. In short, do not buy this book or even read it. It's a waste of time.
I can't believe Craig McClanahan recommended this book. How much did Sams pay him to say that?
