Michael J. Behe, a biochemist at Lehigh University, presents here a scientific argument for the existence of God. Examining the evolutionary theory of the origins of life, he can go part of the way with Darwin--he accepts the idea that species have been differentiated by the mechanism of natural selection from a common ancestor. But he thinks that the essential randomness of this process can explain evolutionary development only at the macro level, not at the micro level of his expertise. Within the biochemistry of living cells, he argues, life is "irreducibly complex." This is the last black box to be opened, the end of the road for science. Faced with complexity at this level, Behe suggests that it can only be the product of "intelligent design."

Book Description

The groundbreaking, "seminal work" (Time) on intelligent design that dares to ask, was Darwin wrong?

In 1996, Darwin's Black Box helped to launch the intelligent design movement: the argument that nature exhibits evidence of design, beyond Darwinian randomness. It sparked a national debate on evolution, which continues to intensify across the country. From one end of the spectrum to the other, Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key intelligent design text -- the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it.

In a major new Afterword for this edition, Behe explains that the complexity discovered by microbiologists has dramatically increased since the book was first published. That complexity is a continuing challenge to Darwinism, and evolutionists have had no success at explaining it. Darwin's Black Box is more important today than ever.

Download Description

From within the highest ranks of the scientific community comes a startling new theory of creation that not only contradicts Darwinian orthodoxy but opens the door to theological arguments biologists have dismissed and ridiculed for more than a century.

5 out of 5 stars A Design Parade.......2007-10-08

After I purchased biochemist Michael Behe's new book "The Edge of Evolution," I decided it would be wise for me to boney up on his seminal 1996 work "Darwin's Black Box." I already played muck-a-muck with this debate for quite a few months, in a whirling attempt of absorbed concentration in the infamous struggle of "Design v. Darwin" to find out the truth. The debate may be superfluous, and especially downright nasty, and it will continue to intensify in the coming months with a new documentary by lawyer and social commentator Ben Stein in February 2008. Reading Behe is like taking a time out from the unfair play on both sides of the field. He is a better penman than Richard Dawkins, devoid of the man's vile poison, and he treats the reader as a student to be respected, not as a clay figure to be molded into a Darwiniac inquisitor. In fact, Behe is a committed believer in common descent, a position that isn't too friendly a bedfellow of creationists. The book is unique in both its author and its content, as demonstrated by the numerous "critiques" and "debunking" of the arguments proposed on the Amazon boards. Reading the hundreds or so reviews and responses only do so much to strengthen Behe's ideas.

This book is more like a parade. Behe, the ringleader with the marching rod, introduces us to the central argument of the "Black Box." It turns out to be irreducible complexity, which embodies the fabric of many biological systems once believed to be inconsequential, simplistic globules developed by chance mutation and selection. We then witness the march of the band and its many sections: the cell, the bacterial flagellum, blood-clotting, the cilium, etc. Each system, composed of many interdependent parts, will cease functioning if only one of its microscopic parts is missing. The individual parts, of course, can still possibly perform some other function (so goes the most powerful critique against ID! Things have different functions! Eureka!). However, the system itself will be quite useless. Thus appears the grand finale, a prolonged beat of the bass drum, which is that the neo-Darwinian paradigm is an implausible explanation for how these molecular systems appeared, no matter how many billions of years you attempt to postulate for its progress.

Attacking the hypothesis of intelligent design as a "God-of-the-Gaps" argument is one of the most frequently peddled mischaracterizations in all of the debate, promoted by no less than the most rabid of atheistic biologists like Dawkins and Eugenie Scott. The argument goes: We cannot envision a way naturalistic science could develop this system; hence it was made by God. The falsehood in this attack is typical, not to mention simplistic. Behe himself describes ID as the purposeful arrangement of parts in a system. We see this in every biological system: the cell, the flagellum, the cilium, and the blood clotting system. These systems are arranged in a purposeful pattern, structured precisely to, in the case of the cell, to replicate and store information, and in the case of other biological organisms, to sustain itself (unlike non-living materials like, say, rocks). It says nothing about whom or what this designer is. And, of course, it still remains the burden of proof to demonstrate how it evolved. We're talking about the Supreme Law of the Universe (Darwinism), and all that people can come up with are fairy tales about how it MIGHT have happened?

Neo-Darwinism cannot be supported much longer. It doesn't mean that evolution did not occur, or that common descent is a bogus idea. But the chance mutation-selection paradigm is becoming increasingly to difficult to sustain. The hyperactive Stalinist response to events like the Dover case and the actions committed by groups like the NSTA and ASE in America suggests a religious cult going through panic mode. Certainly there is something to what Behe and the rest of the ID movement is saying that just strikes a nerve. Maybe it's just the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A great critique of evolution........2007-09-25

Supporters of the classic evolution that is taught in schools went nuts when this book was published. It could be argued that Michael Behe started the inteligent design theory and brought the debate of evolution back public stage.

Behe has been heavily criticized for daring to confront the evolution juggernaught and has made his book a must read for anyone interested in the evolution debate. This book is important and will shape the thinking of evolutionary scientists in the future, whether they like it or not.

1 out of 5 stars Behe's empty box.......2007-09-05

First let's start with a quote from The National Academy of Science. " Creationism, I.D. and other claims of supernatural intervention in the origin of life of species are not science because they are not testable by the methods of science."

Mr. Behe uses the terms darwinism, darwinian evolution, darwinian gradualism through-out his book instead of modern evolution because he knows this name carries alot of heated imagery in the minds of the fundamentalist. If confronted with the findings of modern day evolution I think Mr. Behe would realize just how shakey the ground for his ideas would become.
He condems Prof. Doolittle for using a "yin yang" analogy but goes on to give boring and irrealivant analogy after analogy of his own.
He states that 90 persent of Americans believe in God as if the truth were dictated by a show of hands. If that were true then he might want to convert to Islam since the Muslim faith is the largest religious group in the world.
This leads me to my next problem with Mr. Behe's book. He is constantly refering to an intelligent designer or intelligent agent, and then speaking of the supernatural and divine. Here I have two questions.
1. Why use the singular noun? Why not appeal to many intelligent designers or agents?
2. Why could'nt these creators be "natural" as opposed to supernatural?

Which leads me to my final gripe.
Mr. Behe is constantly telling us how the scientific evidence points to an intelligent designer but never offers his own testable proof. Complexity is not proof in and of itself. What is the indentity of this creator? He does'nt say. The whole book seemed to be a rant against scientist who do not agree with his view. Mr. Behe seems to think there's this big conspiracy against the truth. Who's truth? His.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing stuff.......2007-08-31

Functionally interdependent irreducible complexities....fascinating. How can these be adequately explained? I find it truly amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-08-22

Down to earth with complexity explained in a simple readable way. This is a very good source to dispute one of the most absurd notions in the history of the world....evolution. Fantastic, logical, and full of expert knowledge. Dispute it if you wish, but truth is evident. God is real!

Twelve-year-old Craig Kielburger, upset by a newspaper article about the forced slavery and subsequent murder of a child in Pakistan, began in 1995 to research worldwide injustice against children. Armed with the disturbing facts, he convinced friends at his Canadian grade school to form a group to advocate for children's rights. With world-changing zeal, Free the Children gathered information, wrote world leaders, and led conferences on the issue with other youth. Kielburger himself was given the opportunity to accompany a human rights worker through cities in South Asia.

The young man witnessed shocking abuse from which most middle-class Western children have been carefully shielded: he met an 8-year-old girl whose job was to recycle bloody syringes without gloves or other protection, children in a factory working with extremely hazardous materials to provide fireworks for a Hindu religious celebration, and children sold for sex on urban streets. On returning to his home in Canada, Kielburger bore witness to what he had seen and asked a simple, devastating question: "If child labour is not acceptable for white, middle-class North American kids, then why is it acceptable for a girl in Thailand or a boy in Brazil?"

Free the Children is now a powerful organization in support of the world's youth, and this book is sure to be a call to further action--certainly for all young people, and perhaps for many adults who have previously felt hopeless about the possibility of ending abusive child labor and poverty. "We simply do not believe that world leaders can create a nuclear bomb and send a man to the moon but cannot feed and protect the world's children," says the author. "We simply do not believe it." --Maria Dolan

        Book Description

Here is the dramatic and moving story of one child's transformation from a normal, middle-class kid from the suburbs to an activist, fighting against child labor on the world stage of international human rights.

Making headlines around the globe, Graig Keilburger and his organization, Free the Children, which he founded at the age of twelve, have brought unprecedented attention to the worldwide abuse of children's rights. Free the Childrenis a passionate and astounding story and a moving testament to the power that children and young adults have to change the world, as witnessed through the achievements of one remarkable young man.

3 out of 5 stars Quality of writing is mediocre, topic is excellent.......2007-05-02

There are parts of the book that are clearly written in the immature style of a teenager (colloquial speech) and parts that have been edited so much that they seem to come from an entirely different person. The overall book is choppy in terms of style, although the organization is excellent.

I would have preferred that the author articulate more clearly his emotions that accompanied his experiences. I would have hoped that his editor/professional writing mentor would have worked on making the story more compelling. I was a bit sad to get to the end of the book and not feel inspired. I felt like it was an "interesting story," but inspirational--not quite.

The captions below the photos should either not exist or tell additional information that is not contained in the text. I was annoyed to read a summary statement below the photo that I had just read on the previous pages.

It would be a good leisure read for high school students (or anyone for that matter), although as an example of good quality writing, I wouldn't suggest it.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Journey.......2007-01-09

The Kielburger story is one of an incredible journey that he took as a twelve year old to explore the problem of child labor. The "journey" has continued since then into his discovery of the problem all over the world, in addition to his solution through his organization. They build schools, spread awareness through lectures (and their website www.freethechildren.com), inspire young leaders through their programs, and so much more. This is a story that needs to be told over and over again to whomever in hopes that the world can work together to "Free the Children" all over the globe. Get this book and pass it on to any one and make sure they pass it on....

        5 out of 5 stars Enlightening.......2006-12-06

A wonderful book that will give you a firsthand account of the situation surrounding child labor in South East Asia.

5 out of 5 stars I love the Me to We Philosophy.......2006-11-02

Craig and Marc's stories are so amazing. I used to think that I can't make a difference in the world because I am only 14 years old. This book taught me that even the smallest of actions can create a ripple that affects more people than I can ever imagine. The ideas in this book are really quite simple, but when articulated so clearly by Marc and Craig, it just makes so much sense.

5 out of 5 stars The Best book.......2005-07-22

Craig Keilburger is an amazing man and is one of the Worlds greatest heroes. I have learned more from this book then any in the whole world. Even Social Studies!

5 out of 5 stars Dad loves it!!!! And so do I.......2004-02-19

When I bought this book for my 92 year old dad, Sis muttered, "He'll hate it! And he'll be so-o-o-o angry that you bought him a book, especially an old-geezer-book." Three days later Dad has read completely through the thing and is running up a BIG long distance bill calling all his pals and cousins to share the jokes, stories, humor, and chuckles. Every page is chock full of some of the world's best and most positive humor about the pitfalls and pleasures of aging. True, some of these jokes are more than a century old, but that makes them even more appreciated by folks who detect echoes of the language from their youth. And, of course, I've read most of this book too -- with great enjoyment. It's the kind of collection of short bits you can dip into for a quick chuckle or curl up with for an hour of quiet smiling. I highly recommend it if you haven't already read it. As for Dad, this afternoon he asked me to order some extra copies for him to send to friends. There is no greater compliment than that from a man who "doesn't care much for books".

5 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners!.......2006-09-20

I received this book with my very first McSpadden dulcimer, and it's quite good! It lists the notes by fret numbers, which makes it super easy for people with no musical knowledge to follow along and learn. The book also lists the notes for those who prefer to read music. The twenty-four songs included in this book are a wonderful cross-section of the various tunings and styles that are popular with the dulcimer. I highly recommend this book, and also recommend that buyers take this book to a local printing store to have it spiral-bound for easier reading while playing.

3 out of 5 stars Okay dulicimer manual.......2006-03-22

I liked the song selection, but this is an intermediate book not necessarily for beginners.

              3 out of 5 stars A dulcimer classic.......2003-04-29

This book is traditionally included in the purchase price of all McSpadden dulcimers. It is a traditional book with many interesting, historical pictures. The tab is easy to follow, and the songs give a good working beginning knowledge of some very well known and other not so well known tunes. The main problem is that while including examples of all tunings used in dulcimer, most of the tunings in the book (for example, Phrygian mode) are rarely if ever used in the "real" dulcimer world. All in all, a good first book and a good introduction to a really fantastic line of dulcimers.

2 out of 5 stars not for music illiterate.......2000-03-26

i have recently started playing the dulcimer, without any musical background. if you are not familar with musical notes and don't have a full grasp of how to read sheet music, this book will be difficult to follow. i ended up having to find different books that were closer to my knowledge level - which was practically zilch.

4 out of 5 stars Review on PHP Web Development with Macromedia Dreamweaver.......2007-07-05

Pro: Excellent appendix on setting up Aapche, PHP and MySQL server.
Con: Material covered are too brief.

I purchased this book since I am interested in learning Dreamweaver and PHP for Web development. If you are like me, who is interested in learning Dreamweaver, this is not the book for you. This book only briefly cover the Dreamweave and then shift the focus mostly on PHP and MySQL programming using Dreamweave environment. The problem is that this book doesn't cover the topics on PHP and MySQL very well. Information presented in the book are very brief and can only serve as tutorial at best. I constantly looking for other reference books to assist my learning on the subjects presented in this book.

The reason why I gave this book a 4 star is because this book does have an excellent appendix on how to setup PHP, MySQL and Apache server which helped me successfully setup my development environment on my computer. Other reason is that this book serve as an excellent self-taught manual that present important points on the topics I should know about PHP and MySQL web development. Combine with other more detailed reference books, this book is great to get anyone going with PHP and MySQL web development.

5 out of 5 stars My Most Useful Web Design Book.......2007-06-25

I am only halfway through this, but I have already picked up many invaluable tips in using Dreamweaver to automatically insert handy javascript and PHP code. With most technical books I'll read a chapter or two and then put it aside for reference, but with this book I have been able to plow right through it, using the examples to learn different techniques.

3 out of 5 stars Great on Instruction Poor on explanation.......2005-11-15

Look this book is OK; hence the 3. Chapter 9 is worth the money for the book alone. Now if you have little or no experience with PHP you are going to look at the code that Dreamweaver creates and you are going to be totally lost because the book does not explain the code that is created by Dreamweaver. None, Notta, Zilcho, not even a smidgen. Now that is my only real complaint. I wish I could recommend another book but I am not aware of another one. Overall this book has a lot of good information but gets a hard hit for lack of code explanation. Good luck.

1 out of 5 stars Mac users avoid this book.......2005-10-21

This book's advertising is misleading. Except for the appendix, the book completely ignores instructions for the Macintosh user. As a result, I have literally spent weeks searching for the necessary adjustments to accomplish the demos on a Mac. This book should be advertised as for Windows users only. It should be an excellent text for them.

5 out of 5 stars Great book on creating dynamic web sites.......2005-05-18

I had a little knowledge of PHP and MySQL and had worked through part of an introductory book on the subject, but I really hate programming (even though it seems I'm forced to learn *something* as I progress in my web development career). So I picked up PHP Web Development w/ Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004 because I thought it would take some of the pain out of creating a dynamic web site (database-driven) from scratch.

While the stuff I learned from the other book (syntax basics, etc.) gave me a pretty fair foundation, this book opened up new horizons. It's so great to be able to use Dreamweaver to automate so much of what goes into a dynamic site. Also, this book discusses the free PHPMyAdmin which makes creation and administration of databases a snap (BTW I'm a Mac OS X user).

Not only was I able to work through the exercises in relatively short order, I was pleased to find that one of the authors (David Powers) checks into the Apress forums on the Apress.com website and personally helped me when I got to hurdles. That may not always be the case, but it was an extra benefit I found after purchasing the book.

I think the book was written in just the right style. I had a little bit of PHP/MySQL experience (which helped) but the book went detailed each step I was supposed to take so even if I didn't have that experience, I was able to follow along. The great thing about PHP and MySQL is that they are both FREE and open source so IT COSTS NOTHING to put together a dynamic, database-driven site. This book helps you do just that. I still have a long way to go as far as being able to put together my own site from scratch, but this book was fantastic. I will go back to page one and re-read it just to make sure Iget the concepts down.

I recommend this book very highly (and have never written a book review before so that speaks for itself).

4 out of 5 stars Good starter for PHP in Dreamweaver.......2005-12-06

If you already know PHP then this book will be too easy for you. If you know Dreamweaver and want to get into PHP, this book isn't large and can help you a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for PHP beginner.......2005-01-15

I've found this book very useful for a PHP beginner as me. I could make the whole website working with Dreamweaver MX 2004, PHP5 and MySQL 4x on my local machine and test it on a webserver using PHP4x and MySQL 3x.

Hints to work with this book:

                        ON YOUR LOCAL MACHINE:
                        1. Do not create password for MySQL
                        2. When creating Database Connection in Dreamweaver, type in the username as root, but do not type the password.
                        3. For Admin page, if you get an error, use the error handler shown on page 300, 301 to handle it.

                        ON A WEBSERVER:
Go through pages and specify host, MySQL username and password (don't miss page 254).

I have enjoyed the book very much.

3 out of 5 stars Not for beginners or intermediate.......2004-06-18

While the content of the book is potentially good, anybody who needs a little handholding might get lost quickly as the author does not give much background information and skips many steps that are second nature to proficient developers. This is where the beginner puts this book away and the intermediate user struggles with finding more information on how-to-do a particular thing. (This starts with the setup of a Apache / MySQL / PHP server and ripples thru the whole book.)

In addition to the content, the book is slightly disorganized and not the easiest reading material. Not so much because of difficulty but because of writing style.

2 out of 5 stars Riddled With Errors.......2003-12-15

This book is riddled with errors, from nonsense layouts to coding mistakes. The interface (a hotel booking system) is very rudimentary and does not work as advertised.

The book does introduce readers to Dreamweaver's server behavior interface and does a good job walking readers through a local install of Apache, MySQL, PHP, and a few other tools.

                        A good idea, poorly executed.

                          Product Description

Are you ready to develop your website into something more than a collection of static pages? In Dreamweaver 8 Dynamic Development, instructor Dan Short teaches you how to use Dreamweaver to build a robust and dynamic site. This video tutorial delves into the possibilities offered by Dreamweaver 8, including the integration of a back-end database, SQL queries, customized blogs with filtered content, and search forms. Dan breaks down the skills that will help turn you from designer into developer: understanding data types, creating a database, and inserting and updating database records. He also walks you through the construction of both the front and back ends of an interactive blog. While this title uses ColdFusion to demonstrate dynamic development in Dreamweaver, the same procedures and concepts also apply to ASP, PHP, .NET, or any other server-side language. Exercise files accompany the training videos, allowing you to follow along and learn at your own pace.

                          Book Description

This is the long-awaited follow-up from glasshaus' "Dreamweaver MX: PHP Web Development" (1904151116), which Matt Brown (Deamweaver Community Manager, Macromedia) described as "the VERY best book I have ever seen dealing with databases and web programming".

But you don't need to have read that book; any experience of developing PHP sites with Dreamweaver MX or Ultradev is a great starting point. This book takes your PHP sites beyond the functions provided by server behaviors. It teaches you PHP, from the syntax to full applications, from the point of view of a Dreamweaver user, covering PHP-generated email, XML, Sessions and Cookies, Flash and two case-studies - a Training Log and a Content Management System.

The chapters take you from basic syntax through to developing full applications, teaching the basic functionality, then showing you how to use it in real-world examples.

4 out of 5 stars Really good follow up if you're moving up to PHP from HTML (in Dreamweaver).......2005-12-06

I learned a lot of using PHP and Dreamweaver together from this book.

Yes, this book assums you know basic PHP, and of course Dreamweaver, and if you're not an uber coder, then grab this series/book.

I read a review here saying there's no info for MacOS X, it's true, but I think getting PHP/MySQL running on OSX isn't hard and takes about 15 minutes of reading Google results to know how.

                          2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-06-26

I purchased this book shortly after it was published, before there were any other books available on the subject. The author assumes (by mentioning it in an early chapter only) you will be using Windows OS, I wanted the information for Mac OS X. If you are taking advantage of Mac OS X and it's Unix platform, you won't find any information in this book that is relevant to develping PHP and MySQL on an OS X platform.

3 out of 5 stars Good but full of errors.......2003-05-02

I have found this book very helpful in going beyond the basics. I would not recommend it for beginners for several reasons but mostly because there are a ton of errors that would frustrate a newbie. I checked their site for error listings and there is only one. If they would keep the list updated then I would highly recommend this book.

If you are an avid Dreamweaver user with some experience with PHP handcoding, not just the queries Dreamweaver lets you write, this book is great. Otherwise, keep looking.

                          5 out of 5 stars Doesn't know what he's talking about.......2003-04-09

lbxiong doesn't have a clue and is quick to dismiss a well-thought out book.

It also seems to have escaped his notice that Glasshaus were owned by Wrox who also went into liquidation, so the book he recommended won't receive any support either!

This said the authors of Dreamweaver MX: Advanced PHP Web Development have continued to support their work even though they will never see any proceeds from the sale of this book. Now *THAT'S* dedication...

                          1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2003-03-28

This is supposed to be advance, but it looks more like confusion. This book is poorly written, full of assumptions. Unless you're willing to spend the time to ponder what's going on, don't even waste your money.

Furthermore, the bank has pulled the plug on the publisher, so you won't even get any support.

I'd say scrap this book, better to buy WROX's Professional PHP Program instead.
