Amazing.......2007-10-19
This book it's so amazing, if you play poker you must read it, it helps you a lot in your game.
Learning Different Games.......2007-10-08
For those who want to learn the fundamentals of different poker games there isn't a better primer out there than Super System 2. Doyle Brunson has chosen some of the most entertaining and insightful professionals around to share their strategies and advice to new and experienced players alike for each of the six different games covered in the book. As a bonus there are tips from Mike Caro, a chapter dedicated to on-line play, and a tournament overview which will be especially helpful to those without alot of large-field tournament experience. Doyle's own life story is almost worth the price of the book alone and is a must read for those who truly want to appreciate the roots of the game today!
Nothing Very Insightful or Helpful, Except Section by Caro.......2007-10-03
Nearly universally hailed as the greatest poker player of all time, Brunson is the master of self-promotion. And this book is very much about self-promotion. Because it's referred to as the Bible of Poker, I've read and re-read Brunson's chapter on No Limit Texas Hold'em trying to unearth something valuable that I missed in my earlier reads. There's little hand analysis and little advice that's worthwhile, just general advice that won't equip you for cash or tournament play. For example, Brunson claims that with pocket Aces you either win a little money or lose a lot of money. He also says he intimidates players by his willingness to "go all in." Just what you're to do with the aces in particular situations or when you should be willing to shove all your chips into the middle he leaves unexplained. He provides little valuable guidance to beginners and no guidance whatsoever to experienced players.
In contrast, Dan Harrington's three volume set on No Limit Hold'em is a masterpiece. Chapter after chapter, Harrington teaches the reader how to really evaluate a hand, based on position, the competition, the stacks, the raises, the checks, and the pot odds, as well as how to put another player on a hand. With a mix of created and actual play, with descriptions of the players' styles, the portion of the tournament, and "your" own play, Harrington dissects the ensuing action. I'm already a much better player for having read Harrington's books.
Caro's chapter on tells (in Brunson's book) and poker philosophy is great, full of sound practical advice. Since I only play No Limit, it's the only chapter I found worth reading. However, you would be better off buying Caro's "Book of Poker Tells," than wasting money on Brunson's overrated "Bible."
Not as Detailed as I Expected (review for NL and Limit Hold'em sections).......2007-10-01
This book has good information for a newbie, but I've been playing poker for 4 years and it really didn't provide me with any new or insightful strategies. This was the first poker book I have ever read, so I don't have much to compare it to, but I thought it would go into specific details such as hand analysis, timing, bet amounts and so forth...but the details are not there...he may say, "I'll put in a big bet or overbet," but that's about it. Mike Caro's section on "tells", however, is decently insightful. Since I mostly play online, I'll look forward to applying this info next time I go to the casino. But overall, if you're already relatively versed in poker strategy, this book will do you little good.
poker made easy?.......2007-08-17
Now this is the "new testiment" of the poker books. Doyle is a very smart man and knows who to talk to about playing poker. This book is NOT for beginners. Well, worth the time spent reading (well we will see if it pays off).

The Bible of Poker.......2007-10-22
I found this book very helpful in understanding poker at a higher level. I wouldn't suggest this book for a beginner, but for someone that have played a few hands at poker and know the basic knowledge of poker. Doyle Brunson and his team cover about every form of poker out there in this book and I would recommend this book to anybody that plans on playing some serious poker and making money at it.
truly the bible of poker.......2007-10-10
If you are an absolute newbie or an experienced pro, this book is a good read. Doyle reveals his style of solid play to the world and reserves his spot in poker history.
If you are absolutely clueless about how to play Texas Hold'em and get licked every night at your friend's house, this book will help you become a solid player. Once you get down the basics, it's a lot easier to make reads.
Everyone raves about this book in the poker community and with good reason. This is your shortcut to playing good poker. No joke. If you understand the logic behind Doyle's play, you will be a better player.
"Don't quit the day job".......2007-08-31
"Don't quit the day job", as Doyle Brunson said recently in an interview.
I bought this book some time ago and enjoyed it thoroughly. It is a must read for poker buffs who are looking for ways to upgrade their game. It is important to realize that even Doyle changes up his game from time to time, and cannot be relied upon to predictably do what he recommends here.
Much of what Doyle recommends has value. Pay attention to his comments about what strategy works for which stakes. The author covers many types of poker games by using expert comentary on how to play them effectively by such players as Chip Reese. In the back of the book is an extensive section about the odds of drawing to particular combinations of cards to make various hands. This is good stuff.
Brunson suggests that reading about playing poker is all to the good, but that to really learn about it you have to find a game for the kind of stakes you like and do it.
Good Luck,
Robert Hardy
power poker strategy.......2007-08-27
very good book. very interesting. only problem. doyle brunson plays top notch poker players and makes bets of multiple thousands of dollars. some of his strategies won't work in your average 10 dollar buy in hold em tournament that you hold in your garage once a week. doyle brunson is a risky player who gambles alot. people might fold at your bluff if they are looking at a 3,000 dollar bet but at your house, where people only have to pay 4 black chips and 2 blues to see the flop, they are more likely to call. i guess basically what i'm saying is that no poker strategey works on every type of player you will encounter. But the book mentions this fact many times. good reading? yes. have i won more pots because of it? maybe a few.

The Power of Partnership: Seven Relationships that Will Change Your Life
ASIN: 1881052419 |
Book Description
Early in the century, miners would take canaries below ground with them. When the canary stopped singing, they knew the air was too toxic to breathe. Like the canaries, women who work in today's corporate marketplace are serving as an early warning system to alert us that the business environment is becoming unhealthy and we must make far-reaching changes. The authors of these essays go beyond sounding a warning to serve as harbingers of essential business transformation. They are entrepreneurs, consultants, corporate executives, and thinkers of all stripes. While big companies conduct "business as usual, " these women are pioneering innovation. In fifteen provocative, practical, and insightful essays, they share painful struggles, striking new metaphors, stories and legends, and fresh analogies - the corporate mythology of tomorrow, the raw, vital stuff of transformation. As varied as their backgrounds and perspectives may be, these women see a common need and share a common goal - to create more humane and nurturing workplaces. Truth and a willingness to risk are benchmarks of the essays, as is the search for personal and spiritual freedom. The authors speak of personal responsibility and a balance among all the areas of one's life. Work becomes an arena for self-discovery, explained through metaphors that are organic, contrasting with traditional male metaphors taken from sports and the military. The controlling "power over" becomes life-nurturing "power to, " and steps for creating a full and productive partnership between men and women are defined. In proposing new and more effective ways to succeed in business, When the Canary Stops Singing explodes the myth that feminine andmasculine perspectives can't interact in harmony. Its examples testify to the importance of moving beyond the masculine status quo to achieve a balance in the workplace that will ultimately benefit everyone.
Book Description
We live in a time much like the postwar era. A time of arch political conservatism and vast social conformity. A time in which our nation’s leaders question and challenge the patriotism of those who oppose their policies. But before there was Jon Stewart, Al Franken, or Bill Maher, there were Mort Sahl, Stan Freberg, and Lenny Bruce—liberal satirists who, through their wry and scabrous comedic routines, waged war against the political ironies, contradictions, and hypocrisies of their times.
Revel with a Cause is their story. Stephen Kercher here provides the first comprehensive look at the satiric humor that flourished in the United States during the 1950s and early 1960s. Focusing on an impressive range of comedy—not just standup comedians of the day but also satirical publications like MAD magazine, improvisational theater groups such as Second City, the motion picture Dr. Strangelove, and TV shows like That Was the Week That Was—Kercher reminds us that the postwar era saw varieties of comic expression that were more challenging and nonconformist than we commonly remember. His history of these comedic luminaries shows that for a sizeable audience of educated, middle-class Americans who shared such liberal views, the period’s satire was a crucial mode of cultural dissent. For such individuals, satire was a vehicle through which concerns over the suppression of civil liberties, Cold War foreign policies, blind social conformity, and our heated racial crisis could be productively addressed.
A vibrant and probing look at some of the most influential comedy of mid-twentieth-century America, Revel with a Cause belongs on the short list of essential books for anyone interested in the relationship between American politics and popular culture.

A fine survey of the uses of comedy and satire in the political and social arena........2006-11-06
Early liberal satirists helped oppose the nation's leaders and their policies, providing an alternative to political conservatism during the 1950s and 60s: REVEL WITH A CAUSE focuses on the use of comedy and satire to prove alternative commentary and nonconforming ideas to the public. College-level students of media studies or American social issues will find it a fine survey of the uses of comedy and satire in the political and social arena.

Time Travel in a Seven CD Box!.......2000-05-20
This is AMAZING. Everything from the thorough documentation in the liner notes to the way the chronological presentation gives an audio history of pop music in the decade is perfect. Even though licensing restrictions exclude a lot of significant music, it's still a really fun musical history lesson. It's also a powerful mnemonic. Put it on and be transported to wherever you were when these songs were popular!

Book Description
Concern is growing about the effectiveness of television advertising regulation in the light of technological developments in the media. The current rapid growth of TV platforms in terrestrial, sattelite, and cable formats will soon move into digital transmission. These all offer opportunities for greater commercialization through advertising on media that have not previously been exploited. In democratic societies, there is a tension between freedom of speech rights and the harm that might be done to children through commercial messages. This book explores all of these issues and looks to the future in considering how effective codes of practice and regulation will develop.
Customer Reviews:
Book needs a revision........2006-01-26
This book is similiar to sun java security tutorial with little additions specific to weblogic 7.0 and apache axis 1.0. The code examples don't run on j2ee 1.4 platform. The book also needs a new edition with revised examples to include newer security mechanisms with j2se 1.5. Except for chapter 1 - A Security primer, all other chapters are technically obsolete.
If you wish to pick a good alternative book, choose Core Security Patterns by Chris Steel et all - that is the best book I have seen for Java security.
Its greatest strength is also its greatest weakness.......2005-10-02
Pankaj Kumar definitely deserves an "A for effort". As in other material of his I've read he makes security concepts accessible and easy to understand.
Kumar created an impressive array of tools and example code which are available at a URL provided in the preface. The problem is that when you consult his book hoping to find Java code to accomplish a specific task you often find instead a description of how to use his JSTK (Java Security Tool Kit) to accomplish the task. For some readers this may be okay but for anyone who wants to learn how to write their own Java code it just adds an awkward extra layer of indirection.
Aside from that significant concern I would definitely recommend this book for software developers seeking to learn more about J2EE security.
A little bit of everything.......2004-05-01
The title is, definitely, misleading: it does not cover the subject of J2EE security. One cannot build a secure application with this book! There are lots of great books on the Standard Edition security, and there is no need to go over it again, particularly when J2EE presents so many new issues and problems one needs to take care in order to build a commercial application. Otherwise the book is easy to read and understand.
Excellent and comprehensive book on J2EE security.......2004-03-22
This is one the best books that I have ever read. The writing is very lucid and the author explains concepts in very clear and easy to understand manner. The utility tools are very, very useful. I have have been using them on a regular basis. The book also has good code snippets, diagrams and screen shots where necessary. But no space filling techniques ever.
The coverage of topics is very good. Security, cannot have one sided view. The author did a good job of pulling together all aspects of securing a Java application (from code access security and class loading to cryptography to securing components to securing webservices) - he covers the whole gamut without getting lost.
Ever since I bought this book, I have been carrying to work everyday. I buy LOT OF computer books, but rarely do I fall in love so much with them. I would put it on the same level as UML Distilled, J2EE Patterns and Bruce Eckel's Java. If you are doing Java Security, this is the one and only book you will ever read. To me, it has been inevitable.
I sincerely thank the author and the publishers for not making this another 1200+ page book. This is about 400+ pages and doesn't put you off with its weight!
Excellent primer on security!.......2004-01-09
This book is an excellent compilation of security concepts explained in simple terms and with lots of well illustrative example code. Kumar has even provided benchmarking code to help developer choose appropriate technology for their own applications. Great book to have for security developers and students!
