This paper analyzes a small open economy model under inflation targeting. It shows why such a monetary regime is vulnerable to speculative attacks that take place over a short period rather than instantaneously. The speed at which the regime collapses, and the extent of reserve losses, are increasing in the central bank's explicit or implicit commitment to intervene in the foreign exchange market. Attacks are therefore ranked, from most to least severe, as follows: Exchange rate targeting, CPI inflation targeting, domestic nontradables inflation targeting, and money targeting. Under inflation targeting the size of the attack is increasing in the tradables consumption share.

Exchange rates have been central to the course of economic development in Latin America from the heyday of import substitution to the rapid expansion of foreign debt in the 1970s, and from the debt crisis and its troubled aftermath to renewed growth and borrowing in the 1990s.

Why do governments choose the currency policies they do, and how do economic and political factors affect these policies? Although currency policy is made by governments operating in a political environment, there has been little study of the political economy of exchange rate policy. The Currency Game looks to fill this void by examining the range of potential determinants of currency choices by Latin American governments. While purely economic factors--especially economic structure, trade patterns, and exogenous economic conditions--are of course important to these choices, the book focuses on the political and political economy considerations that have typically been underrepresented in the literature. These include the effects of interest groups, electoral competition, and the timing of elections on exchange rate decisions.

Since exchange regimes are adopted for reasons as diverse as inflation control, reduced volatility and improved competitiveness, the book also features a cross-country analysis of national exchange rate policies, as well as case studies of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru.

This paper analyses the persistence of inflation in post-communist Russia, with interest rate, exchange rate, and money supply as key arguments. The paper then derives a monetary policy feedback rule, which has been used to show empirically in the context of Russia that the official interest rate has reacted more to exchange rate changes than reacting to inflation, thereby keeping inflation as a persistent problem. This implies a need to have a 'flexible targeting rule' for inflation so as to bring it under control, which would make interest rate as a key monetary policy instrument for price stability.

If you or someone you know is a genuine redneck--then buy this book! Davis crammed his book full of great lingo, authentic redneck details, and hilarious parody. Just don't try to drink an RC cola while you read, or you'll end up laughing and spewing it all over the book. Take it from one who knows!

I was hoping for something to read to a child. Instead I found Santa mixed up with the NRA and toting a Confederate flag. Adults may find this an amusing rendition of St. Nick's visit with clever illustrations - but I'd never read this to a child.

This book definately does not belong at an elementary school library. With references to Beer and K-Y Jelly and Santa "being like a real man and farting and burping", I found it very shocking that my daughter brought it home from school. Fine for adults if you like this sort of thing, but keep it away from school age children.

This is a very funny and authentic "homage" that captures the hilarious true spirit of the south! The illustrations are great and while Ms. Sullivan pokes gentle fun at redneck icons, she demonstrates an affection for her region and her subject.

This book could have been very clever but author chose to include items like beer and K-Y jelly. Author also has Santa farting and burping which I find disgusting. This book is not suiltable for small children. I am from the South so I appreciate good humor but this book was in bad taste. Hats off to illustrator. Good illustrations done in bright bold colors.

This book is a wonderful compilation of many unavailable
children's songs and now makes my collection complete. My only
reservation is the lack of a CD or cassette as accompaniment to the book. This would be a fantastic aid for those of us who don't read music, but would like to use the book as a classroom teaching tool.

Good hardcopy, simplistic sample exams........2003-10-25

I have found the best way to drive concepts home for me, is to do lots of sample questions with explanations. The printed material in this set was invaluable. This book is primarily sample questions, with a brief overview of each objective prior to the questions. The answer sections give detailed explanations of why each choice was right or wrong. As I went through this all, I took notes and filled in my weak areas.

The Cd was very weak, however. The questions were simplistic and nowhere near as difficult as the real test was. (I still passed!)

Overall, I was very pleased with this book as a study aid, but as a yardstick to determine your readiness for the test, don't rely on it.

700+ pages of stuff you already know.......2002-04-04

This guide was the first I found on XP. If you haven't certified on a fairly recent MS OS, this might be of use to you, but do not stop with this book. If really just scratches the surface. Most of the topics covered in the book (it does cover the objectives in a superficial way) are things the 70-270 test takes for granted you know. If you are 2000 certified, you want something else more geared to the specific differences between XP and 2000. The guide does include specific additional reading, usually from the Resource Kit or the Knowledge Base, and many hands-on lab setups (you need a 2 or 3 pc network, with 2000 Server on one). Bottom line, I do not feel this is a very good book by itself for any experience level.

False sense of security.......2002-03-05

I get the impression that Dillard and Northrup really rushed to get this book onto the bookstands. Reading through chapter one I found many instances where the authors stated Windows 2000 when they meant to say Windows XP. For example, page 19 suggests that to install Windows XP you simply "insert the Windows 2000 Professional installation CD-ROM and reboot the computer." Well, last time I checked the Windows 2000 CD installed Windows 2000, not Windows XP.

So then I consulted the Microsoft Knowledge base, and discovered Q316452 which lists out all the mistakes in the book. What a mess! These authors really rushed the book, and made a lot of mistakes as a result.

On the bright side - I did pass the exam, and the book did give a good overall perspective of the knowledge required to pass. My advice, however, is to make this book a supplement to a much larger amount of study. The exam had a surprising amount of questions related to the PC BIOS (APM vs ACPI) and SCSI BIOSes.

To the authors I offer this - please put out a Second Edition as soon as you can, and correct these errors. The 70-270 is a fundamental exam for the .Net MCSE's, and I don't want to be working with dummies!

Exam-study or not - Very Enlightening.......2002-03-04

I was very surprised when I used this book and the associated practice exam system (both in the book and on the CD-ROM) in the amount of information about the XP OS that I learned. I've used XP since it was in beta, read the Resource Kit, read other Microsoft Press books on XP and still I found reference to items in this book that I had not read anywhere else. Granted, the book presents the data in very brief summary statements and if you really want to learn more than what is needed to get the practice exam answers right you will need to use the on-line help in XP, the Resource Kit and the Microsoft Web Site. But the knowledge gained after reading the book and following up with the additional resources was well worth my time.

My only complaint about the book is that much of it was obviously the Windows 2000 Professional Exam Prep, and whoever performed the global search and replaced missed quite a few 2000 references. It can sometimes be a little confusing when they are giving you a scenario involving Windows 2000 and Windows XP, and the answer does tell you to boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM to correct your Windows XP installation.

Regardless of whether you are studying for the MCSE exam or not, if you want to delve into the Windows XP OS and learn about things that may not have been obvious, this is a great book.

A bit shallow, automated test does not reflect "real" test.......2002-02-23

Need a bit more in depth. I get the impression that the "real" tests are more complex with figures, graphs, file listings to choose from, etc. none of which are on the sample test on the CD. Don't buy this just for the sample test. Get sample tests from one of the online distributors such as www.selftestsoftware.com or www.measureup.com. Otherwise the book seems to be a good outline of the 70 270 test catagories. I've found it helpful anyway.
