Book Description

"Everyone has two countries," Benjamin Franklin once wrote, "his own and France." Here, in a gift to warm the heart of every Francophile, is a photo album of the "second country" of our dreams - of winding blue rivers dotted with white boats, sun-filled sitting rooms in private chateaux, artists' tables in small pottery workshops in Provence.

For 11 years the most successful French diary, French Country Diary outdoes itself with photographs taken exclusively for the year 2000 edition. Created by Linda Danneberg and Guy Bouchet with Pierre Moulin and Pierre LeVec, it is a labor of love, and features a gift box and fabricpatterned cover and endpapers.

5 out of 5 stars More Beautiful Than Ever!.......2002-08-10

I just purchased the new French Country Diary for 2003 -- actually I bought four since I give them as gifts and my bookstore quickly runs out -- and it is fabulous. I buy them every year. Every page transports me to beautiful corners of the French countryside -- to gardens, houses, inns, great little museums. The design is great, with little bits of fabric patterns at the top of the date pages matched to the colors in the photos on the opposite page. It comes in a pretty slipcase so it makes a really nice presentation. I leave it open on my kitchen bookshelf and it draws a lot of admirers. I save them from year to year because they look so attractive on the shelf.
I hope they continue for many more years! Merci!

5 out of 5 stars French Country Diary Calendar.......2000-09-09

I have purchased the French Country Diary for the past six years. It never leaves my side. The daily space is large enough to keep appointments and diary entries. The hard cover helps keep this book looking good all through the year. At the end of the year it goes in my bookcase for my business and personal records for years to come. The bonus....everytime someone sees this calendar/planner they ask me where they can buy one just like it! Enjoy!! P.S. The pictures are absolutely wonderful as well.

      Book Description

There are unique complexities associated with the economic valuation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and telematics. Traditional methods of quantitative analysis may not be appropriate in accurately and reliably assessing the economic impacts of these technologies. Although advanced transportation and related technologies are being planned and deployed at an increasingly rapid pace, many of the technologies are still relatively new, and their use may not be widespread. Much of the initial information and statistics gathered have been anecdotal and have focused more on benefits rather than costs. Therefore, difficulties arise due to the lack of historical data and 'lessons learned' from which to draw upon. In addition, compared with traditional transportation infrastructure, ITS technologies have different life cycles, cost structures, and a number of interrelated elements. This book addresses these concerns and proposes new economic assessment techniques as well as modifications to existing ones. Included are case studies from a multitude of North American, European, and Asian nations and major metropolitan areas covering a wide range of ITS technologies including freeway management, electronic toll collection, advanced driver assistance systems, and traveller information systems.

          Book Description

Mick and his friends hang out in front of the downtown library--hassling passerby, making noise, spitting on anything in sight. If the night's slow they might even do a little "street cleaning," bashing some geek who has the bad luck to come anywhere near them.

Unlike his friends, though, Mick would rather be playing drums in his metal band, but they broke up in a vicious scrap that left everyone in stitches. So when he meets Dariana, a keyboard player, he's psyched to get together. But for Dariana, Mick's bashing is not at all cool. When Mick and Dariana's band starts taking off, he knows he's got to change. But his old friends have other ideas, and they decide to "persuade" Mick to see things their way.

Set against the tough background of inner-city Halifax and its music scene, Good Idea Gone Bad is the story of one young man growing up in dangerous circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars Braxton on Musical Enlightenment- Quartet (1985).......2003-08-26

This book recounts a 1985 tour of England by Anthony Braxton's classic quartet (besides Braxton on the reeds, the quartet featured Marilyn Crispell on the piano, Mark Dresser on the bass and Gerry Hemingway on drums). The author, Graham Lock, accompanied the quartet on their tour. The book includes transcriptions of ten or so interviews Lock did with Braxton as well as with the other members of the group. These are connected with concert reviews, stories of the tour and essays on Braxton's ideas on musical languages, systems of notations, etc. This is not a scholarly book. It is an enjoyable read that serves as an excellent introduction to the work and thought of one of the few musical geniuses that resides on the planet.
Braxton holds forth on every aspect of his music (from his innovative solo work to his compositions for four orchestras or the notated composition for one hundred tubas!) as well as on his ethical, political and spiritual beliefs. Some of this stuff will seem pretty out there to most readers but what emerges is a portrait of the artist as a very thoughtful, passionate, and thoroughly engaging man. Braxton and his cohorts are very much worth knowing.
One side note- for those of you who are Braxton freaks (as am I) it is worth noting that three of the concerts from this tour have been released on the Leo record label. All three are available from Amazon for your multi-media listening pleasure. They are Birmingham(1985), Coventry (1985) and Quartet (1985). The latter should really be listed as London (1985). I recommend any of the three, especially the Coventry concert. This truly was one of the premier quartets of the eighties.

5 out of 5 stars This is the clearest introduction to Braxton's music........1998-09-13

This is the place from which one should begin their studies of Braxton. Clear, concise, and very readable, it introduces many important concepts that will enable anyone interested in Braxton to develop a greater understanding of his musical universe.

          3 out of 5 stars A positive one.......1998-03-06

Locke has managed to overcome a lingering "Braxton-worshipping" hang up and create a livid piece of "jazz" literature. We in Taranaki look foward to the next,or for that matter, any works of post-structural-vibrational-dynamic literature.

From the supplier: Mask-making activities may be utilized to enhance students' grammar skills and self-expression. One such activity was developed by teacher Jean Kalick Molot and photographer Andrew Levine. It starts out with reading a book about emotions and asking students to list down emotions that come to mind. Students are also asked to relate these to personal experiences. Masks are constructed to express emotions chosen by the children and students are encouraged to express themselves freely. The activity is capped with a writing session where students write about their mask expressions.

                        Book Description

Science Fiction Audiences examines the astounding popularity of two television "institutions" of our time--the science fiction series Doctor Who and Star Trek. Both of theses programs have survived cancellation and acquired a following that continues to grow. The book is based on years of research including interviews with fans and followers of these two television series. In that period fans and followers have changed, and ways of studying them as "audiences" have changed as well, but the programs endure intact--Star Trek, for example, is approaching its fourth television incarnation.

John Tulloch and Henry Jenkins dive into the rich fan culture surrounding the two series, exploring such issues as queer identity, fan meanings, teenage love of science fiction and genre expectations. The authors further question how these series operate on other levels, for example, by portraying particular American and British profiles, by promoting certain ideologies, orsimply by providing a very consistent form of entertainment.

Science Fiction Audiences encompasses the perspectives of vast population of fans and followers throughout Britain, Australia, and the USA. This book is intended both for fans and followers of the series, who will continue their debates in these pages, and for those involved in media and cultural studies, who will examine a historically changing range of audience theory operating over the time period this study covers. Overall, Science Fiction Audiences offers a synthesis of text, context and audience study.

3 out of 5 stars Insightful but overly academic.......2000-08-25

An academic, though interesting look at the opinions of various viewers in regards to the world's two most famous sci-fi television shows, Doctor Who and Star Trek. The Doctor Who section explores viewer reactions to (if I'm not mistaken) the Jon Pertwee story "The Monster of Peladon", an odd choice as it is not generally considered one of the more popular Doctor Who adventures. The story was chosen for analysis as it features strong social and political commentary, including the subjects of worker's rights, unionization, and women's liberation. As the book is a scholarly look at the average science-fiction viewer, it tends to be somewhat dry and difficult to follow at times. Overall an interesting oddity, though probably not for the average reader.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive in-depth state of the art book.......2006-11-06

"This book is intended for researchers, practicing engineers, and students who wish to understand and / or develop fingerprint-based recognition systems." So the introduction, and right they are. The authors have chosen a more informal style, but still give some of the Mathematics necessary. The references are extensive and ultimately the reader will have to go to them to make a contribution.

I would recommend buying this book with "Automatic Fingerprint Recognition Systems" by Ratha and Bolle (ed.) It would be hard for me to make a decision between these two books.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all interested in Biometrics.......2004-02-17

This book is a "must". Very useful for my research on Biometrics and Multibiometrics Systems. No wonder this book received the 2003 PSP Award (Computer Science) from the Association of American Publishers.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent state-of-the-art overview of methods.......2003-09-10

This book first describes the different biometric systems that exist. It describes different methods of acquiring the fingerprints and the advantages and drawbacks from each method. Then it handles the different analysis methods for fingerprints in depth. The matching algorithms that are known with their evaluation is handled throughly with their indexing and classification methods. It discusses methods for fingerprint evaluation with the databases of NIST on DVD and the software sfinge for artificially making the fingerprints.

The part that is really new is the multimodal biometric system and performance measures of these systems. It also handles the individuality of fingerprints themselves and finally it gives an overview of methods for attacking fingerprints systems (denial of service, fake fingers, trojan horses, replay but also the electronic storage systems behind them). If you are in biometrics and also in forensic science, you certainly should consider reading this book.
