Customer Reviews:
I'm hungry just writing this review..........2007-03-08
First of all, I'm amused by the bizarrely aggressive reviewer above. Umm, it's grilled cheese - relax.
Trust me, this book oozes with great content. The recipes include the relatively simple- putting together a special grilled cheese with one of the many well-thought out selections of breads, cheeses, seasonings and accompaniments (like chutney, spicy greens or pickles). Even the simple ones are not combos that I would have thought of, like the tasty Panini Inglese, built from classically English treats like Stilton, watercress, and roast beef.
The book also includes some recipes that are a bit more involved, like the Hot Muffaletta or the Sage, Sausage and Jack Cheese Sandwich with preserved lemons. It's a wonderful exploration of grilled cheese, and I think you will be impressed. I'm certainly enjoying it.
A Very Cheesy Cookbook.......2006-11-22
Who doesn't love a warm, comforting grilled cheese sammich when the weather gets cold? Some good bread, a few slices of cheddar, butter, and a big crunchy pickle is heaven to me! Throw in a side of tomato soup and we got a winning combination!
I always thought I was creative when I took spinach, pears, and brie and made a very classy little grilled cheese pressed between some heavy skillets. However, Marlena Spieler - a long time writer for Bon Appetit and author of many cookbooks - has brought grilled cheese to a new level. Her book Grilled Cheese: 50 Recipes to Make You Melt is just the thing to bring a creative comfort to your kitchen during the cold season.
The book starts out with a comprehensive review and introduction. She begins by covering various types of cheeses (blue viened, soft, cow, goat, semi-hard, spiced, bloomy rind, smoked and so on in extremely specifc subcategories) and how each can be perfectly utilized and paired for your own creative uses. All are accompanied by a short description describing their general flavors and properties. Since one may not be able to eat a whole wedge of cheese, Spieler also considers the proper storage and handling of cheeses. To further aide the grilled cheese selection process, a section covering breads, meats, fuits, chutneys and so on are all covered so that your experience with her recipes and your own home concoctions! At the back is even a resource guide on where to find good cheese stores or markets, and suggestions on finding local cheeses.
But how do the recipes stand up? Perfectly. Rob and I have already found a few favorites, ensuring that we now keep a few select cheeses on hand, and nudging us to always experiment with a new piece of stinky goodness. Rob's current favorite is the Mediterranean Meltdown; tomatoes, Mahon cheese, and fresh thyme on olive bread. We threw in some sauteed red onions as well for a truly filling and rustic sammich!
I've become partial to the fresh mozarella, fig jam, and prosciutto for it's sweet and salty sensations. The raddicchio, Roquefort and toasted pecans on pain au levain is another delectible tid-bit that goes well next to a blazing heater or roaring fire place.
Breaking out the heavy skillet is definetly part of the charm, but don't think that some of these don't mix it up. Classics such as the tuna melt are revamped. Recipes calling for home made chili aioli, and fruity chutneys make for a flavorful and fun experience and a perfect excuse to visit local farmer's markets. Desserts, salads, and a classic accompaniments also adorn the book, and well as a small section for a few homemade mustards to keep things spicy!
The book is filled to the brim with gorgeous photos any photographer would envy. Sheri Giblin, a local San Francisco food photographer, has done an excellent job bring each and every recipe to life. Luckilly with grilled cheese being such a simple fare, many times yours will look much like the photo. Mine have to my total surprise.
[...] I highly suggest you go order a bargain book copy. Mine has one or two stickers on it, but really, who cares? The book has tons of great ideas, and will fill you with inspiration for simple meals, and fun lunches with friends.
Overall, the book is shibby, affordable, and truly cheesy.
Great Mac and Cheese.......2006-03-23
I am of the opinion that if you get one good receipe, that is worth repeating, out of a cook book you got your money's worth. This cook book is much better than that. The concept of using multiple cheeses when making macaroni and cheese was revelatory! Macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food and this book takes that to a new level.
You've got to be kidding me.......2006-03-13
Folks - let me tell you that I cook, that I own many cookbooks, and I really LOVE talking about cooking. I might not be the best, but I truly enjoy spending time in the kitchen.
With that said, I would like to share an ACTUAL 'recipe' from this soon-to-be-dollar-bin book: Quality white bread, cheddar cheese, and a dill pickle. That's a RECIPE. Wow! I hope I haven't given away too much...
...cooking is about experimentation and having fun, right? hey - if you need a book to tell you how to make GRILLED CHEESE SANWICHES then you probably need a book about how to make the ultimate glass of icewater... $16 for a book you could figure out on your own a thousand times over? Hoo-boy - I guess desktop publishing has come a REALLLLY long way....
Mouthwateringly Good.......2004-08-25
Marlena Spieler's new book is just fabulous. Not just the recipes but the mouthwatering photography by Sheri Giblin. In addition to the grilled cheese recipes, there's a detailed discussion of which cheeses and breads to use, and an accompaniments section with recipes for homemade tomato soup and zucchini pickles, as well as a salad summary.
I know what I'm having for lunch, grilled American cheese on white bread with tomato soup. Although, that may disappoint the author, as she says, "American cheese is probably the most famous processed cheese. Don't expect to find it in this book. Why choose processed cheese when there are so many fabulous cheeses to choose from?" (p. 17) Well, first off, I'm in a reminiscent mood. Second, I have the ingredients in the house. But I promise, next time I hit my local cheese shop, I'll have to get some Telleggio and make the "Austin Powers' Shag-a-delic 1970s Grilled Ham, Cheese and Pineapple" or some Gruyere for a classic "Croque Monsieur."
Book Description
"The Battle of Blair Mountain is historical narrative at its best." (Christian Science Monitor)
In 1921, some 10,000 West Virginia coal miners-- outraged over years of brutality and exploitation-- picked up their Winchesters and marched against their tormentors, the powerful mine owners who ruled their corrupt state. For ten days the miners fought a pitched battle against an opposing legion of deputies, state police, and makeshift militia. Only the intervention of a Federal expeditionary force ended this undeclared war. In The Battle of Blair Mountain, Robert Shogan shows this long-neglected slice of American history to be a saga of the conflicting political, economic, and cultural forces that shaped the power structure of twentieth-century America.
"A mesmerizing, rarely mentioned piece of labor history, crackingly told." (Kirkus, starred review)
"Riveting and well researched." (Library Journal)
"Concise, dramatic and authoritative." (Publishers Weekly)

Good, but not quite enough.......2007-08-09
Having read Denise Giardina's fictional account of events surrounding the battle (Storming Heaven), having seen John Sayles' film "Matewan," and having viewed the account as offered in the West Virginia documentary of a few years back, I was hoping for some fairly extensive background into the conflict.
Some background is provided -- the book is not a waste for those who have some familiarity with the events. For those without fairly extensive knowledge, the book should prove an eye-opener. Yes, there was a time in this fair nation when corporations had rights and individuals -- human beings who suffered the ignonomy of not being rich -- did not. The economic schism we are plunging into presently existed before, and men whose only crime was demanding to be paid fairly for their work were treated as criminals and rebels.
Shogan provides some insight into the political world that allowed these injustices as well as a good account of the Battle and the events leading up to it. Again, not quite as much background as I had hoped for, but the book is more than good enough to make an impression. Valuable reading!
A journalistic account.......2007-07-03
I was disappointed with this book after reading several of the academically oriented histories of the period that go into detail about the war particularly from the miners' point of view. I hope for more detail on the actual happenings of the battle, more focus on its aftermath. Shogan is a journalist who seems to have had a fascination with this incident for decades. However, it seems that his career as a Washington based reporter, has shifted too much of this story inside the beltway (of course before the beltway was conceived.)
Shogun spends too much time talking about the reactions of politicians in Washington and for that matter politicians in West Virginia. He will not only tell you what they did, but give you their entire life background. He does this with the union officials on a national level like John Mitchell and John L. Lewis without giving us much of a picture of what their roles were in the union strategy inside West Virginia or with the federal government.
Given the abundance of books that are much better researched about the general struggle for West Virginia coal in the first decades of the 20th Century, I had hoped that Shogan would not provide a rehash of what had already been written. Unfortunately, this is exactly what he did with anecdote and a general outline that appears to have been taken from other texts without much thought.
Likewise, I hoped that he would zero in and provide many more details about the actual battle, which is, after all the subject of his book, but there really isn't much in here that you can't find elsewhere, and elsewhere there is much more serious discussion of the struggle that led to the battle and the economics and politics and sociology of both miners and the coal bosses.
One wishes, someone outside the beltway and close enough to a coal camp had written this story, or even some military writer who is used to giving details of battles.
Fantastic .......2007-01-12
Detailed yet highly enjoyable account of WV coal field battles. A must for labor and union advocates.
Report on "The Battle of Blair Mountain".......2006-11-05
Since I am a West Virginian, born near the scene of this account, I found it especially interesting and informative. I think it would make good reading for anyone, and very good for history buffs, or students of the labor movement.
Desperation Collides with Intransigence.......2006-01-18
The author, Robert Shogan, states "For years the union miners and the allies of the coal operators spilled each other's blood in the West Virginia hills until the miners were beaten into submission." He further notes "Yet the great uprising of the West Virginia miners remains only an afterthought in our historical consciousness, earning only a few sentences at the most even in chronicles of the labor movement and no attention at all in more general accounts of the American heritage."
Following WWI, there was excess coal mining capacity. "Only by keeping the union out, allowing them to hold down wages, could the West Virginia's producers make up for their increased transportation costs" to industrial markets "and gain a proportionate share of the market." The miners and the United Mine Workers Union (UMW) wanted union recognition and fair wages thus putting them on a collision course with the operators.
Mine operators used Baldwin-Felts detectives to intimidate union organizers. Miners joining the union were fired and thrown out of company houses. In Mingo County the mayor of Matewan, Police Chief Sid Hatfield and the sheriff managed to serve as a buffer for the miners of Mingo. When they attempted to stop Baldwin-Felts detectives from evicting fired union miners from company houses, a gun battle resulted at the Matewan depot in which two miners, seven detectives and the mayor were killed. The area and its people were now fully caught up in a ruthless conflict between the two old enemies.
This work chronicles the events from the Matewan shoot-out through the final battle on Blair Mountain as the desperate miners were beaten into submission. Robert Shogan gives an excellent account of the often puzzling and conflicting events as the conflict progressed. There was no effective, and often biased, law enforcement, while politicians made the situation critical. The governors wanted intervention by the U.S. Army, while Presidents Wilson and later Harding equivocated. The miners wanted a fair hearing and their grievances addressed. Ultimately, the miners got a hearing before the US Senate, but there was no restraint on the mine owner's side. The result was the standoff continued leaving the miners few options for their struggle. The miners then began to assemble near the town of Marmet (close to Charlestown, WV) intending to storm the town of Logan, WV, the seat of strong union opposition lead by County Sheriff Don Chafin and his standing army.
Meanwhile, Harry Bandholtz of the U.S. War Department, desperately tried to make peace but union leadership was powerless to stop the miner's march. The miners were now leaderless as the union district officials were now under indictment and left the state. To reach Logan in Logan County the miners had to cross Blair Mountain which they began crossing; and on August 27th they confronted Sheriff Logan's troops, bloodshed resulted. However, Friday night September 2, 1921 some 2100 federal troops arrived and began their task of ending the fighting and restoring order.. By Sunday September 4 the war was over. The precise death toll was never established, but estimates range for fewer than twenty to more than Fifty.
Most interesting both sides welcomed the troops as helpful to their case; unfortunately for the miners this belief turned out to be false. The subsequent legal assault by the coal operators was a devastating blow to the UMW in West Virginia where union membership tumbled to a few hundred. The mine owners used their wealth to dominate West Virginia political and legal systems. The hopes of the rebellious miners were not fulfilled until the Roosevelt administration redeemed their rights through legislation. Today's workers have been spared the fear and desperation that haunted the miners who marched on Blair Mountain. Most interesting the miners were patriotic and believed in the American dream, feelings shared with the middle class. They basically wanted protection of their rights under the law.
The running conflict from Matewan to Blair was the largest armed uprising since the American Civil War. This is a well written; well researched work. Shogan gives brief backgrounds on the major figures while his style keeps the narrative moving. The suppression of the Mingo coal miners fight for recognition and fair treatment helped shape the power structure of 20th century America and continues into the 21st century.

Description:
This paper uses graph-theoretic methods to investigate the causal relationships between agriculture, money, interest rates, prices, and real GDP in 12 countries during the years 1869-1929. We find that agricultural production directly and indirectly causes real GDP in two-thirds of the cases. Monetary shocks also play an important causal role in about half the cases, but unlike agriculture, the causal links are usually indirect through other variables to real GDP. The direct causal link between money and prices is also particularly strong. Between 1869 and 1929, money causes prices in nearly all of the countries in the sample.

let the author speak.......2005-03-01
I need say no more - this alone is worth the book:
THE VASTEST THINGS ARE THOSE WE MAY NOT LEARN
The vastest things are those we may not learn.
We are not taught to die, nor to be born,
Nor how to burn
With love.
How pitiful is our enforced return
To those small things we are the masters of.
My literary holy grail.......2002-06-13
I had tried to get this book ever since I read the Gormenghast books a few years back, but was informed it was unavailable. Imagine my surprise when it shows up on Amazon as available. I bought it as part of a deal with Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor. Had a slight twinge of anxeity when Slaughterboard showed up by itself, but Progress showed up about a week and a half later. Talk about worth the wait. Short stories, plays, illustrations, poems, Peake's Progress is a great collection of major work and oddities that showcases this amazing talent. My personal highlights are the Titus Groan in all but name story "Boy in Darkness" and his full length play "The Wit to Woo". If you are a Peake fan, you should have this, if not, why aren't you?
Peake is great.......2002-02-23
Excellent stuff. The Gormenghast Trilogy is still the book you must read, but this volume is a fine introduction to Mervyn Peake. Btw, ignore the previous reviewer. I'm an admirer of Tolkien and I have no trouble at all appreciating Peake.
Perfect introduction.......2002-01-25
This is a perfect introduction to the work of Mervyn Peake whose great Gormenghast trilogy reprsents the 'other' tradition in British fantasy writing. For me this is altogether much more satisfying than, say, Tolkien. Here you can find Peake's short stories, plays, drawings -- everything that made him the creative genius he was. If Tolkien isn't for you, Peake probably is!
Wonderful Peake!.......2000-02-26
This book contains all of the great moments of Mervyn Peake, save the Gormenghast books. His poetry is excellent, his short stories are great, and his art is just cool.
If you are a Peake fan, you must buy this book.

Includes CD-ROM containing real al-Manar Footage (with subtitles)
This groundbreaking study explores Hizballah's official television mouthpiece, al-Manar television. Self-labeled the "station of resistance," Hizballah uses al-Manar as an effective weapon in its arsenal of war against both America and Israel. With viewers encouraged to carry out terrorist outrages and export the party's fiery brand of revolution, al-Manar has been a potent instrument in keeping the Arab world focused on America's role in the region, furthering the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and building Hizballah's credibility. Drawing on extensive research, including interviews with Hizballah officials, Avi Jorisch delves into the station's history, provides an operational overview, and offers an in-depth content analysis of programming.

Moderately average.......2006-08-04
This was a little bit dissapointing, I thought the title suggested that I was an idiot for purchasing and in hindsight, I think I was !
Perfect book!.......2005-08-18
I laugh at title of book. I do not think I am "Complete Idiot" but I don't think that is author's mean. They mean that even idiots is able to be great, successeful gambler with information from the book. I agree with that because I was so-so gambler before and now I win better.
The book is very funny and clever. All the author are expert in gambling different gambles- poker, blackjack so on. So I learn from masters.
Still I don't gamble too much. It can be dangerous to my money. But when I want fun time, can gamble a little and win a little too. Try it!
Novice - better after this book.......2004-11-13
I am a neighborhood gambler only, but some of the guys I play have been playing for years. I'm not exactly an expert yet, but thanks to this book I am not embarassing myself anymore (not with cards anyway). I used to rely on getting the other players drunk, but now I only need to get them partially drunk to win.
This one came first!.......2001-02-24
I've read a lot of the newer, and easy to read Gambling books in the past two years, and being that this is a second edition, I can tell that a lot of other gambling authors have read this one too! This is the real deal, folks, and the simplest, clearest and most enjoyable gambling book for novices and even regular players to learn from. I read it and started winning more. Don't bother with the others. They're just cheaper - and you get what you pay for!
Excellent book for a beginner........1999-08-14
This is the best book on gambling I have read. It is written in simple and easy to understand language. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more on gambling.
